20 Places to Visit Along West Virginia's Country Roads

"Pearl Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892 in her maternal grandparents’ home in Hillsboro, West Virginia. A mere three months later, her parents whisked her off to China, where they were stationed as missionaries.   Pearl was steeped in Chinese culture in the cities of Nanking and Zhenjiang, where she witnessed the collapse of the Qing Dynasty and the emergence of a fledgling republic. She attended college in the United States, but returned to China soon after her graduation. In 1917, Pearl married an agricultural economist named John Lossing Buck and moved to the rural Anhwei province. These experiences inspired her best known work, The Good Earth, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1931 for its honest and humanizing look at the lives of rural Chinese in the early 20th century. Her copious and popular publications earned her the Nobel Prize for literature in 1938.  After returning to the U.S. in 1935, Pearl devoted herself to promoting civil rights, women’s rights, and child welfare issues. She co-founded Welcome House, an international adoption organization, and later started the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which provides humanitarian aid and intercultural education for children throughout Asia. In 1960, she began raising money to preserve the Hillsboro family farm as a museum and cultural center. Her grandparents’ cabin, where her father Absolom Sydenstricker was born, was moved to the site in 1982. Visitors will see the house as it was in the late 19th century Items from Pearl’s travels are on display, including a copy of the Bible her father translated into Chinese, along with descriptions of the restoration and reconstruction process." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

As a WV History nerd, this visit has been on my list for years. It did not disappoint. The home has been beautifully restored and is full of priceless family heirlooms. The museum director did a fantastic job of telling the story of Pearl Buck and her entire family, their place in West Virginia, and their contributions to the world. I can't wait to dive back into her Good Earth trilogy and give them a re-read. I feel as if I understand Pearl Buck for the first time after this visit. She was the first American woman to win the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prizes for Literature but she was so much more to the people she knew and the lives she changed. This is a visit that you won't regret. I also encourage you to visit Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and Beartown State Park while you're in the area.

What a wonderful little gem in a beautiful little part of West Virginia. We were in the area and we sort of stumbled on this place. The museum director Phyliss is a passionate host and opened the museum even though we were there outside of normal working hours. This is the birthplace of Pearl S. Buck, an American treasure, and should be on your list of places to stop by. You won't regret it!

I went to the Christmas tree tour with a group of 20 ladies. Our docent was very knowledgable. I've bern there about 10 times. I learn something new each time. I highly recommend this event!

The admission price is WELL WORTH the detailed historical tour of the life and times of Pearl S. Buck, and this wonderful home filled with amazing memorabilia. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and kept my attention for the entire tour, despite the fact that I knew very little to nothing about one of our country’s greatest writers and novelist. By time I left all I wanted to do was to go home and start reading the trilogy that begins with The Great Earth, and several of the other works mentioned during the tour. Photography is allowed for personal use only. I took a lot of pictures, and rather than post them here wouldn’t want to spoil it for those who will be visiting this gem of a museum. There is a small but very nice gift shop with everything you could possibly want on Pearl S. Buck. This is a museum and historical home that is well worth going out of your way for. It’s not that far from The Greenbrier (about an hour), Beartown State Park (15 minutes), and Droop Mountain Battleground State Park (5 minutes). If you’re at any of those, make your way here. It most certainly won’t disappoint.

The Pearl S. Buck birthplace is well worth multiple visits. Phyllis A. Lubin-Tyler gave a terrific tour. She has read most, if not all, of Buck's many works. She has visited and absorbed the information from the other Buck homeplaces, including those in China. Don't miss this!

Yelp
I can't believe nobody has reviewed this charming little historic place before. I'm proud to be the first though. We were given a very extensive and entertaining tour of the house including a comprehensive history of Pearl Buck's whole family from when they first arrived in America. I had no idea what craftsmen the whole family were. We were also educated on the tumultous and dangerous days of her parents' missionary service in China when the little West Virginia family was definitely in fear for their lives. The house is decorated in the period's furnishings and there are many of Pearl Buck's own personal things to view, along with the personal things of the rest of the family. It's always interesting to me to go back in time at these little historic places, I actually feel transported, and our tour guide was so knowledgeable I could truly imagine the time. This is a side trip definitely worth a look see when you're in the area,
