I love this spot! I’m not from Winnipeg but I was visiting and we checked it out before going to a play and I’m so happy we did! First off, the service was bang on. Thanks to Kendra! We were in a rush and she was so accommodating and on top of it. Secondly, the food was amazing and full of flavours. Next time I am in town I will try to make it back here!

Google
I had the best food in Winnipeg here! Delicious! The service was great, I had starters, Calamari GF ! I loved it. And the ribs. But the best was coming! The peasant pie is to die for! My kind of super tasty comfort food. I had a blast. The bison bourguignon was very good but the meat was a bit dry, which should not happen in a bourguignon. Portions were very generous. I would have shared the calamari instead of ordering two starters. No place for dessert for me, they looked good though, so order wisely. The place was nice and definitely worth stopping by!

We took in a fringe show and then off to Peasant Cookery for a late dinner. Attentive service in a warm homey atmosphere was a perfect way to end the evening. Started with a warm beet and spinach salad that could have been my main dish, so tasty. I had the bison that was potted with potatoes, mushrooms, carrots and flavourful gravy. I don’t think I picked up my knife as it was fall away perfect. Wonderful and tasty, very good. Our table also had flatbread pizza and steak frites both also well received. We had room for dessert but the mini donuts by the cube we calling us. A great experience as usual and we need to get back more often.

Super friendly service. Been many times and it is always a fantastic experience. Food comes out quick. Nice menu. Helpful staff. Personally enjoyed the mussels. Buck a Shuck Oysters on Wednesday evenings!

Google
Loved it here. Bohemian chiq atmosphere with nice high ceilings and plenty of space. The food was also outstanding. My steak was a far larger cut than I expected, was seasoned perfectly and the cook was spot on. Beverages were classy (also pricey), and the charcuterie board was half off on this particular night. My boy's pappardelle was delicious according to him, and my girl loved her flatbread. We all split a bday carrot cake, very very little room to spare but we managed to wolf it all down - sweet and delectable. Great spot!

Google
●We went there for a birthday dinner. Place is downtown ( parking can be challenging on a Friday night) ●Ambiance is great, right in the heart of downtown but the food (We Elotte Penne & Moroccan spiced king salmon) was not good. We both added salt and pepper but still couldn't eat it. ●Appetizer: margarine was frozen, bread too hard and that stick was very salty ●Drinks: Sangria tasted like everything but a sangria. ●The service was great. Dining area closes at 11 but the lounge at midnight.

My partner and I went here last week for my birthday. We are both super excited to try it out. Unfortunately, a few things went wrong, the first was that we got our appetizers before getting our bottle of wine, which we found quite odd and inquired about where the wine was, (place had 1 other table), it came 10 mins after that. Our server was a little rude after that, probably because we made her look like she wasn’t doing her job, but she wasn’t. She wouldn’t make eye contact and was very short with us and would start with to walk away before we were even done speaking. And for our main, we ordered a medium rare steak and it was way over well done. at that point we had spent much time waiting around that we didn’t want to have them redo it. We just wanted to try and salvage the night and have a fine rest of my birthday. (My partner put in the reso notes it was my birthday so we also found it odd that there was zero acknowledgement of that). Unfortunately, there were really great aspects about it like location, interesting cuisine, and great decor. However, the service and the food didn’t exactly match our expectations.

Google
This place has been around for a while and I've visited several times. The food is generally good. I don't like the Berkshire pork, but the rest of the menu is pretty good. Especially the half chicken entree. They used to have this deconstructed cheesecake dessert that was to die for but they don't seem to offer that anymore. Wish they would bring it back! Also, they have a nice small patio outside in the warmer months.

Yelp
The appy was amazing, service was amazing. Such a great spot! The gnocchi was so fresh and delicious. Highly recommend

Yelp
Ever time i visit London i always make sure i come to this place. Nearby Heathrow Airport Ambiance is amazing. Alwaysy favorite to order is their Shepard's Pie i dont really eat the meat part but something with the potatoes on top of the pie is always making me comeback for it. Nonetheless their food and service has always been wonderful

Yelp
Great ambience and excellent food! My entire family was happy with what they ordered. My son particularly loved his macaroni and cheese. The food was delicious and the environment was beautiful.

Jennyfer A.

Yelp
The ambiance next to the bar area was peaceful and eclectic. The decorations are kind of vintage-ish but modern. The waitress was knowledgeable and helpful. The Aged Cheddar Gnocchi was so tender and cheesy, it is the best gnocchi I've ever tasted. The ice tea was not very sweet. The Crème Brûlée cheesecake was just okay. The top of it was very sugary and crystallized. The cake part was pretty good but average. Overall I had a nice time there.

Yelp
I came here when un town on business and it was probably the highlight of the trip. The food was incredible. Great service and great atmosphere

Yelp
This is a must go for everyone. It was a great experience. The service the food was amazing. I have been back many times. I think the only things that frustrates me is finding parking.

Yelp
Came with my cousin for buck-a-shuck and a much needed glass of wine. It was already 8pm and all of the tables were full and filled with oysters. Fortunately a few people left as soon as we came in, so we were seated in about 3-5 minutes. It did take a while to find the hostess and for the waitress to come to our table. Meal came with soft bread and butter which was perfect for the oysters! Small Cheese Plate (2oz Gouda, 1oz Applewood Cheddar: For $3 an oz, you can choose from an array of cheeses to make your own cheese board or decide on the chefs choice. Gouda was very mild and hard for my liking but the cheddar was lightly smoked and delicious. I also didn't think when I ordered 2oz of Gouda, they would give me two separate ounces. Plate came with nuts, jelly, and pears. Although we order this first, the cheese board didn't come until after the gnocchi! Oysters: Served with a vinegary onion sauce, horseradish and Tabasco. These oysters were a bit small, but well worth it! Pretty comparable to the ones I've had by the Chesapeake Bay near Washington, DC. Gnocchi: Pasta was cooked very well! Roasted peppers, cheese and a dash of pesto was a nice touch for the dish. I also loved how they split the large plate into two smaller bowls! The final tab for 15 oysters, cheese, pasta and two 16oz glasses of wine was about $80. Pricy for a 2 person meal but overall, this place is great for fancy dinner dates or wine and cheap oysters! Will come back for the oysters, but probably not for the cheese.

Lorne W.

Yelp
All great and especially the gnocchi's we're hand made (?) and soft and so delish. The board was great also with the pate! Loved the atmosphere and would definitely go back Pauline was our server and was excellent

Yelp
+.5 for service Yeah, unfortunately this place fell short for me as well. Been wanting to dine at Peasant for the longest time and managed to take advantage of my parents recently visiting me from Toronto. My friends in Winnipeg rave a lot about this place, so my expectations were quite high. I had the onion soup, mussels and fries, and the bison meatloaf. My parents had the striploin. Unfortunately, the only excellent meal was the onion soup. The mussels were tiny and not juicy at all, and the striploin was overgrilled twice. The bison meatloaf was good, but nothing extraordinary. Given the rave reviews my friends had, perhaps it was an off night. Unfortunately given the wealth of restaurant choices in the Exchange, I'll likely not return here.

Yelp
Peasant Cookery has been on my list of places I've wanted to go for some time now, and they did not disappoint. My husband and I made a reservation for our wedding anniversary. The interior is very nice, there are some beautiful antique mercury glass mirrors in the dining room that I loved. We went on a Tuesday, and were told their special was 25% off their wine bottles. We didn't finish the bottle but they re-corked it so we could bring it home at no additional cost. The food was fantastic. We both started with soup, he had the Onion Soup and I had the cream of cauliflower soup. My husband ordered the Steak Frites, which including a generous helping of fries and a made to order soup vide steak. He said it was very good, nice and tender. He really loved the red wine veal jus it came with. I ordered the Aged Cheddar Gnocchi and it was delicious. Lots of variety on the plate and everything cooked perfectly. We finished off the meal sharing the Crème Brûlée Cheesecake and it was heavenly. I was impressed with the staff there, everyone we met was very nice, professional, and genuinely wanted to make the guests welcome. Our server was friendly but discreet. Overall 5/5, would give more if I could. I will definitely plan to return. Thank you so much

Yelp
This place is so beautiful - located in the exchange district and my favourite place for oysters on Wednesdays! The service is wonderful as always :)

Cherry Z.

Yelp
It was a very satisfying dinner! We came on Wednesday night because it was the weekly buck-a-shuck night and I love oysters! From all the oysters I've had in this month (on average I eat oysters once every week), this is the best! The oysters are very fresh and delicious, and it's only $1 each! On top of oysters, we ordered calamari and chicken livers as our firsts. They are very fresh and well cooked. The calamari were soft and chicken livers were tender. Oh don't forget the bread before food! They were freshly baked and were still hot when we got them. They were so good that we asked for a refill. Other than those, my second was Tourtiere with fries. I wasn't so impressed with that because the dish was very salty to my taste.

Yelp
As always the challenge of whether to round up or round down when considering a rating. We went to rounding down from 4.5 to 4. The main reason being that while we enjoyed our meals, we likely would not order the main dishes again. The service, right from the greeting by the Hostess to our server was excellent. Attentive, friendly, engaged and taking time to explain things without the sense she had to 'run' away to other customers. Nicely done. The drink menu has a full listing of beers but sadly, most of them are in bottles/cans. A very limited selection on tap. The wine selection 'by the glass' however was quite reasonable. Wednesdays is the day to go with $1 oysters. While the oysters themselves are not that big they are very tasty. Add to that their side of horseradish is excellent. A great kick but without being sharp or cruel. By cruel I'm referring to the natural horseradish that clears your sinuses for a month! The bison meatloaf was 'okay'. It was very dense and almost dry. I understand that bison is a very lean meat but still, it was not melt in your mouth tender, rather a bit chewy. The saving grace was the shiitake mushroom gravy. They brought me an extra portion and that made all the difference. The mashed, beets, beans etc were nicely cooked and hot. The Skrei Cod was very meaty and one could really taste the bacon in the chicken bacon broth. While it was nice at the start, it almost over-powered to taste of the cod by the end of the portion. As mentioned, we enjoyed our mains but we would not order again. The sides on both dishes were excellent. We saved room for a bit of decadence, the Chocolate Pot de Crème. It was so rich and scrumptious I can't imagine how one person could finish it and still be able to walk out of the restaurant. One minor point is that it was a bit too 'cool' making the custard a little dense; however the biscotti was to die for. That I could eat all night. Good meal, loved the oysters, and excellent service that all suggest we'll be back to try some other menu items.

Jon-Jon G.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place as this was one of the few matches made when I compared my to-do-list with my friend's list of recommendations. My friend was disappointed, as this was one of her favourite restaurants in Winnipeg, and unfortunately, the night we dined seemed to be an off-night. We started with the Beef Tartar ($14), which I found to be a bit "over-dressed." Alternatively, I found my Aged Cheddar Gnocchi ($18) to be "under-dressed." The sauce didn't really elevate the gnocchi, which wasn't 'light and pillowy' but rather somewhat dense. My friend had the gnocchi before, and said that it definitely tasted different from before. Sadly, as my first time here, I'd be hesitant to give them another try next time I'm in Winnipeg.

Yelp
The Exchange District | Great little restaurant | Patio | Charcuterie | Daily Specials | Great service | Great French food Inside The Exchange District corner of Bannatyne and King. The entrance is actually where it says TRAVELLERS BUILDING and it is the door on the right once you enter. Came in on a Wednesday at 3pm table for one and was given their Lunch Menu. Little Brown Jug Beer Local beer on draft for $7 was quite tasteful and distinctive. The brewerie is actually right around the corner from the restaurant. Chicken Livers $12 - App Generous portion of chicken liver served saucy with sundried tomatoes and 3 slices of toast. Knowing livers, beware, they are heavy. I ordered it for myself and I had to pack half to go. Seafood Pasta $18.50 - Main The portion is not going to be your average East Side Mario dish. Kalamata olives are quite dominating of this dish. The first whiff is their scent. The pasta is not al dante but quite fresh and smooth. My pasta came with sundried tomatoes, spinach, kalamata olives and a piece of pan fried white fish. The fish was cooked wonderfully by texture however there's the fishy taste I wasnt a fan of in some parts of the fish. It also wasn't very seasoned. It could be because of how flavorful the pasta was that the fish needed to balance it out. Overall this is a nice little restaurant that I'd return to for food, service, value and environment.

Yelp
I went here for Le Burger Week. The burger was epic. I know it was great but all I remember is the nutmeg on the pickle. Home made pickles with nutmeg. That literally made my day. Did I mention the burger was epic?

Neil S.

Yelp
The whole experience was just ok...which is disappointing as I went out of my way to eat there based on two recommendations. Food was good...not great. Thought the menu selection was extremely limited. Service below par and was very loud even though the restaurant was mostly empty. Would hate to see when it was actually busy. Area isn't great, ambiance ok. Will not return.

Chase P.

Yelp
An awesome! And amazing dining experience. Superb customer service and the best food I've had in Winnipeg! 10/10 taking my freind here more often!

Justin V.

Yelp
A very fine bistro if there ever was one. Great menu, lovely staff, solid wine list. This is always my first stop for eats when I hit Winnipeg and it has never disappointed. A wide selection of delicious things to eat from almost as many animals as Noah had on his ark... well at least as many as the local petting zoo. You will never be unhappy eating here.

Rohit A.

Yelp
It is a good spot to eat while in Winnipeg. We tried many dishes and loved most of them. Chicken Livers - This was the best dish we liked. It was pan fried with red wine, red onion, sun-dried tomato. It was perfection. Duck Bruschetta - It was duck confit, toast, white bean purée, pickled onions. It tasted very good too. Calamari - It was cold when served. The batter didn't have any flavour to it. The sauce that it was served with was tasteless and fresh out of the refrigerator. Very disappointing. Berkshire Pork - one of us ordered this dish and it was huge. By the looks of it, it was sufficient to feed two hungry full sized adults. The server said half of it was fat. My friend enjoyed this dish. King Salmon - this was the dish I ordered. The portion again was huge, but the salmon wasn't seasoned very well. I found it to be very bland. Half chicken - one of us ordered this and found it to be okay. The portion was generous but it lacked flavour and taste. Winnipeg has its fair share of great restaurants, the menu at this restaurant is not as exciting as some of the others. If you're looking for a decent farm-to-table fare which is safe, this is the restaurant you wanna hit. But if you are feeling adventurous/want to be surprised then; in my opinion; this restaurant doesn't has much to offer you. More like a 3.5 star.

Julianna C.

Yelp
We always come here for Wednesday $1 dollar oysters! It's a must if you're craving oysters for cheap without sacrificing quality. Other days I believe they're about $3.50, don't quote me! They're super fresh and sometimes a little small but I don't mind. My bf and I typically order about 50-60 oysters at a time lol!!

Wiliam A.

Yelp
Do I think they put too much sauce on the brisket? Yes. Do I think literally everything else about the place is as good as I want to to be? Also yes. Try the lamb pie. Try the rabbit ragout. Let them serve you charcuterie. Sample the local beers. If you've any room left, the house made Guinness Ice Cream should not be missed. Beautiful spot for downtown eats and a quiet atmosphere. I'm a big big fan.

Ken P.

Yelp
I'll cut to the chase. Good food, poor service. After nearly an hour's wait our group had to ask if we could order now. Totally unacceptable. I had the "Fish & Sticks." The pickerel fillets were good, the slaw okay and the sticks turned out to be shoe string cut French fries. Also good. However, at $23 the value for money just was not there. I had the 1919 Shandy for $7, but was disappointed. It was flat with no zip. I make a much better one. Although I gave this outing three stars I would have difficulty recommending this establishment if hard pressed. A friend in our group sent his mussels back.

Kendall B.

Yelp
After visiting twice in the last week, I feel it's about time to buckle down and review. This place is fairly unassuming from the outside, but the ambiance in both the dining room and the lounge is really nice and cozy! Both of my visits were on Wednesday nights. These were strategic decisions as it was ***drumroll please*** $1 OYSTER NIGHT. Yay for oysters! I am a fairly new passenger on the oyster train, but I can confidently say that the oysters here are the best I have ever had in Winnipeg. They bring horseradish, lemon, tobasco, and most importantly this amazing garlic vinegar with each order. I actually want to bottle that vinegar, bring it home with me, and put it on absolutely everything. It is amazing. I also ordered mussels on both occasions. They change their mussel preparation daily, which is nice because the flavour profile of the dish is never the same! Below are the different preparations we tried: Lemon, white wine, onion, and thyme: Very citrus-y anda acidic, definitely needed a creamy component to the sauce. The accompanying fries were the star of this dish. Wouldn't order these again. Beer, cheddar, and cream: Couldn't really identify the beer taste. Very creamy with chunks of white cheddar as opposed to a cheesy creamy sauce. Better than the first time, but still not a dish I would order again. **the fries that come as part of the dish are always delish. I forget which wine it is, but I DO know that it is the very last red on the first page of the wine list. Luis something... It is only $30/bottle and is so easy drinking and delicious. Definitely recommend trying it! Service is pretty standard. No real comments there.

Ranee W.

Yelp
I would have loved to give this place 5 stars but unfortunately the service was supppper slow and lacked a few details. Decided to have a family of 4 dinner there over the holidays. Our waitress was friendly and all the food was very delicious (except the salon tartar) but it took over 2 hours to have a starter, main and dessert. They first brought our appetizer at the same time as our soup/salad which was difficult to eat without getting your sleeves in your plate reaching over your own dish. They should've come out separate, first the appetizer then the starter. Then we were waiting a very long time between for our entree, dessert and bill. At the end we just wanted to pay and leave but waited a long time trying to find our waitress. Restaurant wasn't overly busy so not sure why it was slow, low staff? Decor of the venue was nice but could do without the paper napkins and plastic table cloths, those seem like cheap diner quality details which don't match the quality of good food and high prices. Overall, food was good but the rest lacked

Michael J.

Yelp
Closed Saturday lunch during business hours posted here on YELP. Thanks for wasting our time driving out!

Jeannine N.

Yelp
Great place for lunch and to catch up with a friend. In doing so I forgot to take a shot of the mussels I had cooked in an assortment of fine spices, curry, fennel, shallots, wine and cream. It was delicious and the broth could have been a soup.

Ryan J.

Yelp
Ended up here for dinner on a layover, and this place was suggested by friend. Located in a great little neighbourhood, this place is a pretty good find. It was cold and snowy and Tuesday, so the place was pretty quiet. We had excellent service, classic but casual and attentive. Food was pretty good - I had the onion soup which I liked and the beet salad across from me looked pretty tasty as well. My tourtiere for dinner came out huge and yummy, with great fries and homemade mayo to go with it. The fish dinner across from me looked and apparently tasted about average. Surprised to see some mixed reviews for this place - I thought it was pretty terrific in almost every sense. Great place to go out for an affordable upscale meal.

Len H.

Yelp
A great restaurant in downtown. I had the brisket which is excellent by Texas standards. The pork chop was also a dining experience had by one of our parties. Overall one of the best places in Winnipeg.

Sonia S.

Yelp
Excellent food and staff! I'm a vegetarian/pescatarian, so there are several main courses here for me - all delicious. Great place to go before a concert in the entertainment district: service is quick and they'll take care of you if you're in a rush. But also a nice place for big groups or late-evening hangouts! I came here on a double-date last weekend and we had a lovely time.

Leah S.

Yelp
Had their Bison Burger today for the le burger week special 2017. The shiitake mushroom and the mushroom cream are smooth and the taste is well balanced (it is the only thing I love about this burger) The pumpernickel bun has decent coffee aroma but the texture of the exterior is too stiff in a way that I wonder if it is a good choice for a burger bun. The patty is bison, massive and dry, excessive mustard in a way that overpowers the flavor. I have a difficult time to be impressed by this bison burger. Service and atmosphere are excellent. I will visit this place another time to try out their dishes on the regular menu.

Daphné G.

Yelp
This place is great, but it is not my favourite. I usually go on Wednesday, since they have good oysters for 1$.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I can't even.....I had the roasted duck with Demi glaze, mushrooms, green beans and spatzle. The stomach was yelling stop, the mouth was screaming more more. So tender and flavourful. Fantastic dining experience. Thank you!

Wu T.

Yelp
Omfg! This place is a find of a lifetime. Food is cared for like no others. Love of creation is foremost in their minds and delivers to the customers pallet. Incredible farm to table consciousness. Busy and noisy is just fine as the food experience is overwhelming all the senses. Do not pass up the charcuterie board, pork chop or the world's tastiest tourtiere.

Nancy T.

Yelp
Plain food not any flair. Almost no seasoning. We had the beet salad & a burger. Service was good. Pleasant staff.

Amanda S.

Yelp
I have a love/hate relationship with the Peasant Cookery. I love that everything is made in house: the butter, the bread, the meat on the Charcuterie platter. Even if something is not made in house they can tell you where it came from. Though a warning: we were served pig face on a Charcuterie platter once so if you are not terribly adventurous you can ask that they keep that item off. The first time I went there we had our now favorite waiter and everything was perfect: the food, the service, the drinks & his masterful pouring abilities. It was fantastic! The next time we went there we had the same waiter and once again EVERYTHING was perfect! The first time I went I had the Profiteroles but didn't like the pastry when I told the waiter that he brought me out a bowl of ice-cream with the amazing chocolate sauce. It isn't on menu but they do that upon request. Now on our third trip we went with several of our friends and we had a waiter who was also waiting on the bar. We were pretty much ignored. The food was mediocre; my friend who ordered the Tourtiere was not informed they make it sweet and not traditional, my husband and his equally large friend were not told what they ordered was a small portion, and our water was never refilled. It was an amazingly disappointing experience. We have been back a few times since then and the service has never been as bad as that third trip but we have found that if our favorite waiter isn't waiting on us then the service is good but not amazing. The food is wonderful on a good day and I recommend this restaurant to everyone for dinner! For anyone with kids: there is no changing table in the bathroom there is only a bit of space in between the sinks. There is also on 1 high chair, if your child needs one call ahead a reserve it or you might not be able to use it.

Phan D.

Yelp
I had dinner here last night with my husband and another couple and I hate to only give it 3 stars, but one member of our group had a horrible dinner. If they were writing this rating, it'd be 1 star, possibly 0 stars if that is possible. I had the brisket, it was amazing and the portion size was generous, I shared parts of it with other because it would've been difficult to finish on my own. Let's get to the big issue, the poor soul that order the steak. At $33 it's not the most expensive steak in the world, but certainly not the cheapest either. It was ordered at medium rare and came grey and well done. The grey colour was unappetizing and should have set off an alarm. I suggested it get sent back, but they he hates sending food back and trudged forward. So in fairness to the restaurant they did not have a chance remedy the situation. It's of some concern that on such a small menu the steak was almost inedible. It's now the morning after and it has been declared "the worst steak I've ever had," after he spent the most of night in the bathroom. Service was friendly. There's a coat check, but we had to retrieve our own coats at the end of the night. If you avoid the steak you'll probably be a very happy patron. If you choose to order it after having read this, be prepared to spend the evening making multiple trips to the bathroom with an upset stomach, you've been warned.

Lasha G.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! We started off with the beef tartar - capers, pickles, mayo, shallots for 9.99 as well as oysters. Both were quite fresh and delicious. When the server finally came back 2 hours later (not even joking, but we knew her so we cut her slack and it was her first day with a full section inside and outside on the patio, insanity if you have ever served before) we also order our main courses. I had fish with an amazing sauce on top of corn and other assorted veggies. Everything was really fresh, nice presentation and tasted great! I think the menu might change ever so often as I took a look online and I can't find this dish anymore. We sat on the patio and in typical Winnipeg fashion there were a bunch of 'assorted folk' walking around the exchange, but they didn't bother us. The restaurant had a nice decor and was packed on a Monday.

Yelp
The bar at the peasant cookery is across the hall from the dining area and I would recommend it over the regular eating space. It is much cosier and the fireplace in the corner makes the place feel very comfortable. It is also a pleasure to watch the bartenders mixing drinks and chatting to people. I am always a sucker for specials and when I heard the special was Panzanella (a favourite salad of mine) we had to order it. We ordered: -French onion soup -gnocchi -panzanella -2 drinks (old fashioned, ginger pear) The French onion soup was great and the gnocchi was fabulous. My wife and I found the panzanella was nothing special, but the drinks made up for that. We also have good service and the bartender was patient while we tried to figure out what cocktails we wanted. We expected that to portions would be small and more costly than the places we usually eat. This was true, but weren't sure if the quality of the food was worth the cost. This is the only thing that stopped me from giving it 4 stars.

Ed B.

Yelp
The food was fabulous. I'm going to copy the butter lettuce, pork belly, potato & Parmesan salad. Aged cheddar gnocchi was very good. Pork chop was enormous, but once you cut away the fat left on for cooking, it was a generous, normal, very moist chop. Nice wine list, tho wish had more Okanagan Valley wines. (Local food deserves "local wine."). Decor is not romantic, as described. Odd combination of old, dark wood w/ Formica tables and paper napkins. Service was pleasant and enthusiastic, if unsophisticated. Worth your time. Do it.

Theresa T.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Peasant Cookery. I recommend making reservations for dinner as it always seems busy when we go. The food and service is consistently very good. Our favorites are: the charcuterie board (it's very good), French onion soup, oysters, tourtière, and half chicken. They also have a nice cocktail selection and a small lounge if you prefer just going for drinks.

Yelp
Food seems pretty good. I had the burger with cheese; which was ok... A little salty...but not terrible. The device was ok. I ordered an iced tea and never got it. Server came off as aloof, but warmed up to us about the time we were done. The fries were tasty though. I would try it again... Maybe it's an off day.

Yelp
I went back to Peasant recently for a lunch and dinner to see if the place has redeemed itself from the not so great meal I had when they first opened almost a year ago. First off, I'll start off with the negatives and move into the good stuff. The lunch service on a weekday was painfully slow despite a barely half full dining room. The slow lunch service isn't a one time thing as many of my colleagues who have gone there for lunch on different occasions agree to that statement as well. The poutine is still as delicious as I remember - super crispy fries, good gravy and squeaky cheese curds. I ordered the burger ($8.99) which is made up of short rib, brisket, and chuck mix and served on a brioche bun with no sides. Fries or salad are not included on the sandwich plates unless you add on $3. I've had the burger before when it was Oui and I can't say it has changed much except this time it tasted more greasy and less flavourful than I remember. I guess the brioche bun doesn't help as it's such a rich tasting bread. I didn't enjoy this particular burger so I wouldn't order this again. My friend didn't seem to enjoy the ham and swiss sandwich ($7.99) as he said it was a little too heavy and greasy. I'm sure the poutine didn't help prior to our main meal but the sandwiches weren't a hit with us. Then I came back for dinner and had the best service and a very delicious meal. So it was literally a night and day experience comparing dinner vs lunch. We had the sweetest server ever who was very knowledgeable about the cocktails and food. I have to say that Peasant has one of the more unique cocktail list so kudos to their mixologist/bartender for that. I loved the mixed drinks there especially the one with champagne mixed in and they were all priced very reasonably at $8 a glass. The bread baskets have always been outstanding here - freshly baked with fresh whipped butter. I really enjoyed the half roast chicken dish ($19.99) - it is a steal at this price. The chicken is cooked sous vide and then roasted to give the skin some flavour and colour. The chicken was very moist and was accompanied with the most ridiculously rich herb butter that I loved though I felt so guilty for eating all that fatty goodness! The dish came with some veggies which were okay but nothing extraordinary - cauliflower, greens and potatoes. Suggestions for Peasant - you need to update your online menu on your website as it looked like the same old menu I saw last year and wasn't reflective of the one I read this past month. And you need to improve the service time at the lunch rush. There's a lot of business lunches done in the Exchange area restaurants so you need to adjust to the crowd because not everyone can sit around for a two hour lunch meal. Notwithstanding, the improvements required for this place to be even better, I think they've redeemed themselves since my first dining experience with them last year. The dinner food and service is excellent but lunch needs some improvements.

Yelp
Ended up here as part of a lunch meeting, I had the soup and a salad that day, the other 10 people at the table had the whole gamut of the menu. Over all the food was OK, the server was trying there best during the lunch rush. The taste was there the portion size was a little small for the price. Most people in the group enjoyed their meal, one of us had to reorder as they ran out of one item, but it took some time to come out and tell him that after the orders went in. I am stuck here on what I think of the place has some good ideas, and items, I am not sure about the execution but then again I went in with a high expectation based on word of mouth(sorry did not read yelp this time) and sometimes that is not fare on my part. From reading DineoutGal review it could be a issue with a good idea with no focus, the head chef is part of a chain, and its not his restaurant. Over all It is a place I am going to try again at least once, likely for dinner.

Yelp
This place is never a disappointment! It's semi-upscale restaurant located in the Exchange district. It's an excellent place for dinner, dessert or even just for drinks. Parking is terrible in the area as expected because of the nature of the location so be prepared to take a walk down the block if you do drive! The food is fairly reasonably priced. In terms of service, like any other restuanants, it could be a hit and miss depending on the server. At my past few visits, the service has mostly been great. Costumers were served with fresh warm bread to start. At our most recent visit, we ordered the Charcuterie board. It had a wide selection of dry cured meat, including meat that you wouldn't normally get elsewhere, ie prosciutto duck. We had the Berkshire Pork. It was very good. It was one of the largest piece of porks we had ever seen. It was crusted with cornmeal so it gave the pork a bit of a crispy texture to it. We also had the lamb pie. It was not a typical pie that was served with flaky pastry. It was served with ground lamb shoulder, peas, carrots and curried mashed potato in a cast iron skillet. The pie itself did not look too appetizing, however, it was absolutely delicious! Peasant Cookery has excellent desserts too! The Maple Tart was very good. It was not overly sweet and it was perfect! The vanilla bean creme brulee is a classic and you just cannot go wrong with it! There was a wide selection of sorbet to choose from at my most recent visit. We had the Green Apple Moscato Sorbet. It was good but it just wasn't how we had anticipated it to be so we probably wouldn't get that flavour again. The bread pudding was excellent. It was served with almond tuile and brandied caramel sauce. It was paired with Guinness ice cream. I would highly recommend it! Overall, I would highly recommend Peasant Cookery. It is an excellent place for special occasions and date nights.

Yelp
As a visitor, I've been here twice and quite enjoy the Peasant. Last night we had a deep discount on quality wine (down from $70). Maybe it's a Tuesday thing, but it worked. We had 5:15 reservations (yes, I know) and the place was full (for a Tuesday) within an hour. I had the brisket, and it was really good. The meat was tender, the potato salad was great, but the beans were maybe undercooked (read al dente) and heavy on cider vinegar (very Carolinian, but I prefer more balance). A little more brown sugar would have been nice, but that's just my taste. The bread and butter are fantastic -- always fresh. Servers are knowledgeable, friendly and accocmmodating.

Yelp
Food here is all amazing and so is the selection. Good experience with the wait staff handling a large group coming and going at different times. Also recommend going into the smaller bar for more cosy dinner.
