What's New on Shelter Island and Long Island's North Fork This Summer

"Peconic Bay Vineyards reopened in May 2021 after an eight-year closure under new ownership with a cottage-esque tasting room and outdoor patio with fire pits overlooking its 148 acres of vines. One of the oldest (and largest) operating vineyards on the North Fork, the property offers tours, oyster happy hours on Fridays (when in season), and private picnics among the vines. Overnight stays in their red farmhouse, built in 1892, with private tastings and brunch are available. And a new tasting room with a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, hotel, spa, and additional acres of vineyard are in the works."

Such an enjoyable experience. I enjoyed the wine and the charcuterie board. The indoor and out door seating is both perfect for a light meal and a glass of wine.

We live in town and decided to finally come check it out. It’s very cute aesthetically with a wonderful atmosphere, but service was definitely lacking. It was a weekday and there were a few groups occupying tables. We would have gotten more than one bottle of wine if we didn’t wait 20 min to be attended to or checked on another 20 minutes with an empty bottle. The attendance was alone, but walked numerous times but didn’t ask if we needed anything. Lots of potential, but service needs improvement. Writing this review while we still wait for assistance to even check out after an hour of seeing our server.

Google
We found this vineyard by accident and it was such a great find. The wine was delicious, the staff was friendly and warm. Please check this establishment out and patronize. You will not be disappointed.

So happy we stopped by! We got complimentary tour in their moke car starting next week they will start charging for tours. Very nice if you want to see how a Vineyard operates. They release Rosé today and it was really good! We try th red flight and yes they are 2020/2021 wines but they have such good flavors. Oysters were oh so fresh Lobster Sliders very delicious

Google
My favorite vineyard by far. I am currently sitting on a blanket in the vineyard and it is beautiful. I have a picnic reservation. It comes with a tasting, large charcuterie board and a bottle of your choice. I’m telling you it is ABSOLUTELY worth it. Clinton was so friendly and attentive. I learned a lot about the property and the new owner from him. Evan came and took us on a tour of the vineyard. He was very knowledgeable and I now know so much more about grapes and vineyards which honestly made the whole experience so much better for me. I would stay here all day if they let me!! It’s my first time in the area and I am definitely coming back. Thank you Peconic Bay Vineyards, Clinton and Evan for such a memorable experience! EDIT: we heard Paris Ray playing on the patio and had to stay and listen. She’s amazingly talented and so sweet! Check her out on IG: @parisraymusic

My companions and I appreciated the ambiance and overall experience. We felt a genuine sense of hospitality, evident in the meticulous preparation of our table.

Yelp
Amazing experience - great service, charcuterie and wine (we shared a cheese platter sans meat with gluten free crackers and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc). Servers were friendly, helpful and hospitable, yet not intrusive and the presentation of the platter, wine and scenery were top-notch. We situated ourselves in a nice and comfortable lounge-style seating area under an awning at the edge of the vineyard. The winery is also dog-friendly. Very relaxing and memorable time. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Pretty bad experience. I come to the north fork each year and try different vineyards with my family. I tried this one this year, and the customer service was absolutely terrible. I don't know what it was, but the one tasting server was really in a mood. He brought the wines out to each of us, and usually when I do a tasting they tell you about the wine, what it pairs with, what notes it has, the process... nothing. He put 3 glasses in front of us and walked away. We were the first ones there and he was not busy. He didn't seem interested in selling the wine.

Yelp
Went on a slightly rainy day but that didn't stop the great service and views of the beautiful vineyard. By far, this vineyard has the most thoughtful and thorough charcuterie board I've ever had, with great wines to go along with it!

Yelp
Wonderful winery! Spacious outdoor space, kind and friendly staff and a great selection of wines. We got the lobster sliders and shrimp cocktail, which were delicious. The lobster sliders were plentiful and fresh and came with potato chips. I would definitely visit again.

Yelp
Beautiful grounds, very nice tasting area. Great venue to sit outside on cool weather day. Live music played well. Service was not so friendly or pleasant. Simple wine order of two bottles was done incorrectly. Not the most hospitable employees we encountered. Grounds were beautiful, Wine fell a bit short.

Yelp
Just Fabulous.... From the warm welcome as we pulled into the parking lot to the greeting from the staff. The venue is beautifully landscaper, open, airy with a great vibe. The music was terrific and the wines and food were delicious. Just a fabulous, enjoyable, relaxing day.

Yelp
This place is great! The food here is extravagant. The dish with cheese, salami, honey, etc was amazing! It is very scenic and great place to eat with nice relaxing music. This fantastic restaurant has great drinks also! there lemonade is out of the roof and so is the arnold palmer. The workers and service were also fantastic! they are super kind and full of joy. I highly recommend to come and visited this place.

Yelp
I really do enjoy this vineyard a lot. I have been here twice with my family. The vineyard is absolutely gorgeous and has beautiful seating arrangements around gas fire pits. We were in for a treat this time because there was live music playing on the background and the weather was perfect. The only downside of this place is their limited food menu. It would be great if they had more food options such as brick oven pizza or some sandwiches. We ordered their charcuterie board and oysters along with several bottles of red and white wine. The charcuterie board had a beautiful arrangement of cheeses, meats, nuts, jam and bread. The oysters were also very fresh. The Riesling white wine is my absolute favorite, it pairs very well with the oysters and cheese board. The service is always great, our server was very attentive and friendly. However, the only thing that annoyed me a bit was the fact that I had to ask him fix our bill twice. We had purchased 6 bottles of wine and were entitled to a discount and a free flight of wine. I did have to ask him to apply the discount even though it was clearly stated on the menu. Other than that, I will be returning with my family and making it a tradition.

Yelp
In all the years that I've been doing wine tours, I have never experienced the rudeness and unfriendliness of any winery on the east end of Long Island like I did today at Peconic Bay. the charge of parking is a rude, inconsiderate, unprofessional individual and he should not be dealing with the public.
google avatar

Martha L.

Yelp
We found a new must stop at Vineyard out east! It is laid-back elegance and really friendly staff. Very knowledgeable and one of the best Rieslings I have ever had. We will definitely be back and I'm so glad that they're open now. We had a wonderful time and were truly relaxed and happy when we left, just the reason we drive out there.

Denise D.

Yelp
Great place to visit! Beautiful grounds, great new Cabernet franc and the service was outstanding!

Joe S.

Yelp
Last minute pop in, worked out well. Grabbed a table and was quickly served, chilled bottle, ordered some cheese plates and some shrimp cocktail. Everything was excellent, nice atmosphere, they have private sitting areas for larger groups, on the will go back list.

Yelp
Peconic Bay Vineyards is hands down THE best vineyard on the north fork right now, especially if you have little ones, or pups. I've been a few times now and they're always so sweet and accommodating! My fam booked the barn for Father's Day back in June and it was the most spectacular day! All their packages and options are amazing. Reserve here without hesitation, you'll be so happy with everything.

Yelp
We visited Peconic yesterday and had a really great time! We started with a wine and cheese pairing and we were suprised by the amount of cheese we received. The wine and cheese were both very good and cheese was all local to the island. We tried their sangria which was tasty and all shared a bottle of the merlot. My favorite however was the Riesling. On special they had lobster sliders which were very fresh. There was alot of seating outside and they had live music. My daughter came along in her stroller and we had no issues with having a baby there which I know some wineries prohibit. We will definitely we back- definitely a hidden gem! I would like to try the "picnic" option they have one weekend- such a cute idea !

Yelp
Never stopped here before but can definitely say we will be back. I love the laid back friendly and welcoming vibe. The wines are phenomenal. Fire pits with Adirondack chairs with pillows and great music. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I've been a member of Yelp for a few years and have moved from Sonoma/Napa wine country to Manhattan last Spring. My wife and I needed somewhere to host 125 people for our wedding and we required great wine, music and a palatial setting in wine country. I can say without hesitation that Peconic Bay exceeded our expectations by ten fold. With so many places to host our wedding, my wife and I (Shannon) selected Peconic Bay Winery. We just looked over our album last evening from our wedding last summer and it brought back memories of a perfect day. Great wine, music and family were all there, but, the location, nothing short of spectacular. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. Peconic Bay offers a setting that any bride would be proud of for many years to come.

Yelp
I like it here. The ambiance is awesome. The back of the lawn is divided into sections. Each section has chairs and comfy couches for lounging on, (found the idea of lounging on a couch outside so exciting) space heaters in case you get chilly, and a fire pit! I loved that if you came with a group you could have your own little section. There was live music which was SO cool, and a crowd of various ages. The only thing I do not like, and this may have changed, but when I went, they only serve dry wine? Mehhh. It was OK, but needed a snack to go with it. That's where the delicious cheese platter came in :) REALLY cool place to come to with friends. Check the times...lately every time I pass by it is closed. Yet on their site they seem to have long hours, so not really sure why.

Yelp
I'm a wine club member here, so yes I do love it. From the very friendly attentive staff, to the wonderful selection of wines, to the usual happening scene, you cannot go wrong with spending an afternoon/evening here. Really enjoyed the steel chardonnay the last time around. They usually have a great band setup too. Also, the wine club membership is awesome. Discounted qines, free perks when you visit them, perks at Empire Cellars, discounts to events and of course the members only brunch wine pick up events.

Yelp
Great landscaping, some of the wine is decent, lovely time with friends.

Yelp
I'll just keep this short and sweet. We showed up here at around 3/4pm last Friday with our dog (not a problem at all). We took a seat at one of the picnic tables and my wife went inside to get us a tasting. Apparently she had to almost get a bullhorn and say HEY really loud to get one of the people working the bar to even notice her (NOTE: there were about 3 people at the bar). She brought the first two tastings back, and they were meh. Ok, next round, I go back in to get the next two tastings--which were actually only one. So, I go up to the counter and tell the woman that we're doing the tasting and that we'd like the next two tastings. Here is how the next dialogue went, almost word for word: Rude woman: I don't know what tasting you're doing. Me: Oh....um....we're doing the six tasting. Girl who helped my wife who was stocking stuff at the other end of the bar: Yeah, I helped them, they're doing the six tasting. Rudey McRuderson: (To the other girl) Oh, so what wines are next? Semi-nice girl: They actually get to choose them. Rudey: Oh, ok. What wines would you like? Me: Ok, ummm....(looking at the menu)...can we try the Riesling and.....[she pours two tastings of the Riesling in the glasses we just used for the other wines].... So, at this point, I'm over this place. The servers (at least this particular woman) were rude, the wines were not great, they reused the same glasses we had the other wines in (hey, I'm all for being green, but come on...), they didn't seem to care at all, really. So yeah, done-zo. The ONLY saving grace, and the reason I give this place two stars as opposed to one is the nice woman who brought a bottle of water and a bowl out for our dog. Outside of that, there was not much going for this place.

Yelp
After visiting this winery on the north fork, we were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful atmosphere and live music - and somewhat pleasant wine. Unfortunately, the attitude of the owner as well as the servers completely scratched the above positive feelings out and we will never be back. Service means something!
google avatar

Yelp
On our mini wine tasting tour, we stopped in at Peconic Bay rather randomly. We were surprised to find it PACKED (the last winery we visited was rather quiet), but it was Saturday of Labor Day weekend. There was live music and a whole host of people outside, packed into outdoor tables in a lovely garden atmosphere. They have a menu, so it's understandable why it's so packed - wine, food and a fabulous atmosphere. We headed inside to the wine tasting area and found the last two stools. We had the Discovery wine tasting (6 wines), $12 apiece (I believe...). A very very nice, elderly gentleman served us - willing to bet he's been there a loooong time. Personally I didn't care for any of the wines - all were far too dry, no hint of sweetness. Not my thing. But the atmosphere might make it worth a return visit!

Yelp
Really enjoyed this stop. Grounds are stunning. Every wine I drank in the tasting was better than the next. Free pretzels with an awesome Herlocher's dipping honey mustard. It's made in Pennsylvania. They sold me on it. I couldn't stop going at it and had to pick up a jar for the road. I haven't heard much about this place previously, but was very impressed. Will have to come back again as we got their late around 430 PM and were up against the closing bell.

Yelp
This place was a ton of fun on a summer day. They had a live band playing and a very eclectic crowd. While the lady inside the bar doing the tastings was somewhat "dry", once we got outside and at a table instead of the indoor tasting bar (advised to make reservations if possible), a fantastic manager Megan took very good care of us. If you like red wine, the "#2" was my pick of the day. Definitely looking forward to hitting this place up again. ;)
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
This is a great place to spend some time on a nice day. The grounds are gorgeous and there is usually live music on the weekends. As far as wine choices, my favorite is the Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine. The only downside is that they only allow you to purchase bottles "to go"- you can purchase only tastings or by the glass to enjoy on the grounds. The glass purchases were buy one, get one half off- so that pretty much evened it out. We were here this past weekend and once over the summer & enjoyed our visits both times. During the summer, we stopped in for my birthday on a very slow weekday & the staff gave me a little ice cream sandwich with a candle & sang happy birthday- that was pretty cool.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. Went there twice this past weekend. Friday night they had a band, they had little fire pits going outside and you can bring your own food and just have a fun time. On Sunday, they also had a great band. The vibe here is really great if you hang outside. The tasting room is small, the wines are good, not great. The Nautique white was my favorite. The owner is very cool and attentive. I highly recommend this place if you are looking to have a fun, yet relaxing time.
google avatar

Marcus H.

Yelp
Good wines. Nice staff & always something fun going on. They give heavy pours...watch out you can get drunk quick if you're not careful.
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
I love this place. I have gone on several occasions and every time its a blast. I went this past weekend and they had a great band playing called Mambo Loco. It was a complete party atmosphere. We brought our own food, but they do have food you can buy there. The wine is OK, but atmosphere more than makes up for it. The service is good too.
google avatar

Jerry C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite vineyards on the North Fork. The barrel fermented Chardonnay is one of my favorite picks from this winemaker. The tasting room is always well staffed and visually appealing. Take the time to join the Wine Club, they have one of the best programs offered in the region. The events are always on point. Take the time to visit this Classic North Fork Experience!
google avatar

Dallas H.

Yelp
This place did not feel like a winery but instead a outside cafe. It felt like they were trying too hard. We did not learn anything about the wine barely but instead we were poured a tiny little bit to drink. This place was ok but if their not going to educate me on their wine process then I want to at least get a buzz on. Nope not with their pours. I would not recommend.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
I didn't particularly care for much here - the sparkling wine and sparkling rose were middle of the pack wines. I wouldn't put this on my must-hit list of vineyards.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
this is worth 3.5 stars if you are looking for a party-4 stars. my first time here (last year) this place was awesome and a blast. we had a nice buzz going, we sat and watched the cougars yell and make a scene, and there was a live band...this year, not as buzzed, still a live band, but a lot of trashy characters running around. it's still a fun place though and a very up beat atmosphere. don't come here looking for the good wine though. only come here if you want to increase your buzz (which i usually do).
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
I love Peconic Bay simply for the party atmosphere. The day I visited there was a salsa band and all I wanted to do was dance and not leave! I wasn't in love with the wine, not bad but not great either. I thought the flight was a bit high for very minimal selection and I didn't buy a bottle from here. I give this place 4 stars though for the fantastic atmosphere, this place is fun!
google avatar

Shirley W.

Yelp
Nice outdoor grounds but the wines are not as good as some of the other wineries in Long Island. Live music which is fun.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
We came here second on our wine tour on a dreadfully hot day. There weren't any tables left except one with a broken umbrella. We sat and the wine and service were fine, the band was a great touch too. I think we just could have used a giant ice bucket.

Bella A.

Yelp
Looking to escape to the countryside this summer? One of my favorite places to visit is the North Fork's wine country. The drive there is relaxing in itself, and one of my first stops is to Peconic Bay Winery. Once you step inside the Dutch-colonial style barn, you're greeted by their friendly and attentive staff. I'd recommend a tasting which begins at $3 and tops at $8, for reserve and non-reserve wines. Huge French doors open out to a large patio with paver stones, which offers plenty of bistro seating. A navy awning covering the patio offers an escape from the sun. Enjoy a bottle of wine with friends out on the lawn where, crisp white Adirondack style seating with navy colored cushioning, are perfect for lounging in, while overlooking the vineyard. (Navy and white dominates the color scheme) The landscape is minimal, but well maintained and vibrant. I just love the simplicity of this winery. The ambiance inside and out, paired with the reasonable prices is what keeps me returning to this charming winery. The white table wine has become one of my staples, its good wine at only $12 a bottle. It boasts bright and clean notes which complements many different types of foods. Several of Peconic Bay's wines have taken New York's top prizes in wine making. You can check out their website for more details about this vineyard at www.peconicbaywinery.com Hours of business Mon-Thurs 11-5 Fri-Sun 11-6

Yelp
This is the North Forks Best. Great wines, delicious hard cider, cheese platters, friendly, fun loving staff, terrific music with fireside enjoyment. It just doesn't get any better.

Jose M.

Yelp
As of 2017 the tasting room is now open to sell wine, brews, ciders, and spirits made all over New York State. As of now it does not have a Web site.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Peconic Bay is hands down my favorite winery on Long Island. I have several memorable experiences at the winery, including... Sitting out on the patio, under the umbrellas, listening to live music in the evenings. There is something so peaceful about the atmosphere of that patio, surrounded by the beautiful vineyards. Sitting in the tasting room and learning about the variety of wines they offer. The staff is extremely knowledgable about the wine they serve and the techniques that went into creating each bottle. The greatest experience I had at the winery demonstrates the staff's desire to go the extra mile for their customers... My husband proposed to me in New York City and the day after our engagement we visited Peconic Bay. They celebrated our engagement with us and poured a complimentary glass of champaign! I will never forget the kindness they showed in helping our celebration continue through the entire weekend. I recommend this winery to everyone who visits, or lives in, New York! They serve great wine, offer excellent entertainment and atmosphere, and genuinely care about every customer who walks through their doors.

Arleen T.

Yelp
The best winery on the North Folk. I enjoy going there. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable of all of the various wines. The atmosphere is great . Whether you go there for and event or just want to spend and relaxing afternoon enjoying good wine with friends, Peconic Bay Winery is the place to go. You can purchase snacks to go with the wine or you can bring your own picnic bag and sit outside and listen to the music.

E B.

Yelp
Peconic Bay has beautiful grounds, outstanding service, and good wine. It is a great place to sit outside and take in the view of the vineyards while sipping on wine. I've visited the winery on both of my trips to the north form and have been impressed with the service and the overall pleasantness of the experience. Don't miss this one.

Jessica F.

Yelp
In short: Peconic Bay is amazing. I've had the opportunity to go a number of times and have always been 100% impressed. The wait staff is fun and attentive, the scenery is gorgeous, and most importantly the wine is great! Last time I went there was a great live music set, and my friends and I stayed for hours. I definitely recommend putting it on your list when you're in Long Island.
