A New Kind of Hot Chicken, from Pecking House | The New Yorker

"I hadn’t realized how much I missed that cheap, comforting pairing until I opened a bag of food dropped off by Eric Huang, the impressively pedigreed Taiwanese-American chef behind a new takeout-and-delivery operation called Pecking House. He sent two Tsingtaos packed in ice, which felt like a portal to a former life and were a consummate foil for his singular fried chicken: three pieces of white and dark meat brined in buttermilk and battered with flour, cornstarch, potato starch and five-spice, plus a modified wheat dextrin called EverCrisp to keep the crust crunchy in transit. The chicken is finished with a tantalizing seasoning of crushed Tianjin chilies, Szechuan peppercorn, salt, sugar and MSG that calls to mind both Taiwanese popcorn chicken and Nashville hot chicken. The set meal ($35) also includes “dirty fried rice” — Cajun-prepared with a wok-caramelized chicken-liver purée — and two greenmarket-inspired sides, like crispy Brussels sprouts with sesame oil and black vinegar or dashi-simmered kabocha with caramelized onion and bacon crumble; vegetarians can have cauliflower that stays custardy yet sturdy enough to hold the batter. Unable to bake in the space, Huang still manages imaginative desserts cooked on the stovetop, such as a peanut-butter pudding with Concord-grape gelée and pretzel crumble, and his decision to start Pecking House reflects a shift from fine-dining ambitions toward simply making people happy and giving Chinese-American cuisine a modern boost." - Hannah Goldfield

There’s been a few times I’ve not been happy but I’ve continued to give this place a chance, but today has taken the absolute cake $30 for this food. The chicken in the black boat was supposed to be a quart of general chicken chicken only. ( 14 medium to small bite of chicken. ) completely underneath is nothing but pieces of broccoli. Not even sure whether there’s a bowl of rice no one asked for rice. No one eats rice and the other container is supposed to be a a quart of seafood delight there is no seafood. It is noodles. Only this order takes the cake. It was not ordered. Online went in person had to wait 15 minutes for the order that was not a problem. Waited in the car prepaid for the order prior to it being cooked that it was a mustupon once receiving the order and returning home with it, discovered that this was not necessarily the order that we had ordered was only one person who came in to pick up an order to go while we were waiting on. Ours did not seem too busy. On the positive the taste of the sauce is very good oddly nothing is hot and we don’t live but a half a block and I mean half a block from the restaurant don’t understand the 15 minute wait but nothing is warm not even warm.

I drove all the way from Gallatin Tennessee to Hendersonville just to get Chinese food from this place. It was so good so fresh and can’t wait To come back again. I used to live behind Peking house years ago so me and my kids used to eat it all the time but you know that it never change is great.

Google
I guess they're doing beef ribs instead of pork now? They are not good. Chop suey had no flavor. Waste of money.

Harrison D.

Google
Hate to leave a bad review, but that food was about as disappointing as it could be. Wife’s food was inedible, beef tasted awful and old. Mine was not much better. Even the fortune cookie was like rubber… I don’t even know how that happens.

Google
This is the second time my family and I eat from here bc we wanted to give it a second chance. It is now the second time we get sick so it is not coincidence at this point. The "house friend rice" is yellow rice with a few peas and carrots.

Google
When I arrive there was four tables one was dirty one had an employee sitting with paper spread out on it so this should have been an indication but decided to stay anyway. I ordered chicken fried rice with water. When my plate was delivered I asked for my water and was told we don't have water. I said you have no water and was told you have to buy it and was charged $1.25 for a $0.09 bottle of Sam's Club water. For $4.75 the serving was very small and the rice was dry. This was my first and last visit to this location. For almost $7 I would have been much better off to pay a little more and go to the Chinese buffet.

Google
The delivery service is good, but I chocked on a long black hair after I took two bites of my food. I had to come in and show proof that I didn’t have long hair because they didn’t believe me over the phone that I didn’t have long hair .

Yelp
We stopped here for the first time and are sadly disappointed. We ordered cashew chicken and General Tso. The food is awful! The chicken is some sort of nasty dark meat, it's chewy and unflavorful. It almost tastes old. The spring rolls are tiny and the crab region literally has a small dollop or cream cheese. For $30, I would expect better. We will never stop here again and I would not recommend this place. They need a lot of improvements for the price.

Yelp
We've been here 3 times and each time the food was wonderful! The staff have been super friendly and they get the food done pretty quickly. We've had egg rolls, General Tso's, black and pepper chicken, lo mein, fried rice, wonton, and their wonton soup. The portions are huge, can definitely split into two meals each. We get our meals with lo mein and fried rice, the lo mein in the picks are half portions that we split. There's another review about the chicken being rubbery and my bf and I disagree. The food is f--ing This place needs more attention and good reviews for their great food!

Kay D.

Yelp
The egg rolls were like cardboard. The shrimp egg foo yung smelled fishy. Not going back.

Lady A T.

Yelp
It was just ok I orfed seame chicken and the chicken looks and taste like it's been sitting and recookded the rice was dry
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
I ordered from here twice. The first time I got General Tsao's. The chicken was rubbery. I thought I'd give them a second chance. Mainly because there are very few Chinese restaurants who deliver. The second time we got several things. The beef and broccoli and ship low mein fun we're as boring as possible. The noodles were so dry that my friends commented on it just by looking at it. The veggie low mein were decent but not at all impressive. I probably won't order again.

Yelp
I should have listened to the reviews. This place is gross. Egg Foo Young gravy was way too salty, egg rolls are disgusting, rice was dry and bland, sweet and sour chicken was soggy and had a strange aftertaste. Total waste. Straight garbage.

Marcus B.

Yelp
Great food made fresh every time. They have indoor dining, convenient parking, and are locally owned and operated. Great spring rolls!
google avatar

Katie D.

Yelp
I gave them 2 stars because they gave me 2 spring rolls instead of 1 and the staff are quite nice. However, the food was not good. I couldn't find barely any vegetables in the roll itself. I also got general tso's chicken and fried rice. The rice was a little undercooked and the chicken tasted like it was frozen. It was dry even covered in sauce and the breading felt like it was glued to the chicken if that makes any sense. You can just taste that it's not fresh. I'm the type of person that will eat everything of anything just because I love food but i wish I wouldn't have finished this meal. Later on it ended up making me sick. Like needing a jug of Pepto-Bismol sick :( Sadly I won't be returning.

Yelp
Stopped by since I was in the neighborhood and was craving wonton soup. This is a takeout place so I don't expect much in decor but for the love of all that's safe, clean the floors. Anyhoo, I ordered anyway- a wonton soup and orange beef. I never order orange beef but I wanted to try it. A nice woman took my order and made sure it was correct. Got home to grub and I nearly cried when I opened the soup. It stunk! Thing is, it looked clear and beautiful! I did it, I ate one. I know! Makes no sense! It was a mistake. A terrible mistake. By far the worst wonton soup I've had. I hoped the beef was decent and it was just ok. I mean, I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like but I will not order it again or go to this place. The plain fried rice was not good. They even forgot to give me noodles for my soup. I love those noodles

Darien L.

Yelp
I called and told them my address and they say "no thanks" and hang up it just did not fell right to me and that was just rude

Sara P.

Yelp
I've been eating here since I was a wee little one. I am now grown and feed my own child. Tonight we picked up from Peking House and I don't know what it was the best Chinese food i've ever had. We got the General Tao's Bean Curd, Veggie Lomein, and Broccoli, Baby Corn, and Snow Peas. I haven't been this satisfied with a meal in a very long time. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
Peking House was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting more of a sit-down restaurant, and although they have a few tables, it really is pretty-much a take-out place. I like ordering a variety of dishes to share, but I wasn't expecting each dish to be as large as they were. We're still eating leftovers. The vegetable egg foo young was amazing, and we all loved it. We ordered vegetable lo mein instead of rice, not knowing that everything else that we ordered automatically came with fried rice. The shrimp with lobster sauce had a wonderful sauce that I would happily use as a gravy for the rice. The mu shu pork was very tasty, but the pancakes were a little tough. I enjoyed the General Tso's chicken, but I expected a little more heat from it. The crab gran goon was delicious, but I would have preferred them a little crispier. We really enjoyed our dinner. I was delighted to discover that they deliver. So next time, I think I'll order online for delivery, but I'll order fewer dishes.

Ron D.

Yelp
Went here Thursday for take out. Had a large order of their food. 90% is still in our refrigerator. Bland is an overstatement. More Vietnamese. I love Chinese food but this? Arghhh. Hot and sour soup was more like dish water! Just couldn't eat any of it. Mongolian Beef tasted horrible. I could go on but beware foodies!
google avatar

Savannah S.

Yelp
We ordered Mongolian beef this evening with hot and sour soup and egg drop soup. When the order arrived we opened our box and it was covered in black pepper, bell peppers, and onions. I have ordered Mongolian beef in several places and it NEVER comes smothered in peppers and onions and tons of black pepper. It is only made with meat and scallions (it even says scallions on their website). This is traditionally what pepper steak and onions is like. I called to let them know that I was delivered the wrong dish and they kept assuring me that this is their version on Mongolian beef and they never use scallions (even though they say it on their menu). We paid $26 (with delivery fee) for all of this and they refused to delivery a replacement and said that their dish was correct. I'm so frustrated with how the situation was handled. They were incredibly rude to me. I didn't go into on the phone but I have to say that the hot and sour soup was also the most watery and flavorless soup I've ever tasted. This whole situation could've been solved if they realized their mistake and made it right.

Yelp
DELIVERY: Solid choice for your Chinese fast food pleasure. Just finished up our first delivery. We were quoted 50 minutes which wasn't a big deal. Ended up taking about an hour and 15 minutes. Delivery guy was nice & courteous .... On to the food .... I ordered Mongolian beef and spring rolls. Wife got lo mein and general tsao chicken. The mongolian beef I don't believe was mongolian beef ... little to no flavoring with vegetables. At least from what I am used to, mongolian beef has a sweet/tangy sauce to go along with it. This was lacking that, but the beef was still good. The spring rolls weren't anything special. I ate mine, the wife didn't care for hers. As for the chicken - it was excellent as was the lo mein. We will certainly order from here again ... A bit expensive but we got a good amount of food. Solid 3.5 - 4 stars.

Yelp
We used to love this food , but twice recently we have ordered beef with broccoli and the beef has been very poor quality . The beef is fat based , chewy , and just disgusting . Makes us sad because we won't be patronizing the business anymore . They do give a large quantity of food but what good is it if it's poor quality . Wish they would switch back to the quality meat they use to use .

Yelp
April 2016 - I decided to give this place another try. It was good compared to my previous order. I ordered Orange Chicken and Egg Drop soup. The entree was actually good, but the soup is still lacking. I'll order from here again. Dec 2015 - I giving two stars because the food has potential, but the fried foods tasted like rancid oil. I ordered several items, the egg drop soup was luke warm but tasty; crab rangoon was ok; the taste (from the oil) of the fried wontons burnt my tongue, same with the fried rice; the lemon chicken was ok and finally the mongolian beef was so peppery that I couldn't eat it. I won't be eating here again.

Yelp
Awesome, you can't beat it. Vey friendly staff and the food is even better. We've been ordering from Peking House for 15+ years. Always good

Ruth B.

Yelp
Usually very good food. Lately, food is no quailty you order shrimps rolls you get rolls wothout shrimp when you order shrimp rolls. And no fourtune cookies. I mean come on. My kids love that and none at all?
google avatar

Lexi R.

Yelp
Good food. Fast delivery. I have MSG sensitivity and I've not had any issues at all. I'm grateful for their quality and consistency.

Yelp
Tried after finding out Hunan garden was closed. Wonton soup was thick and had bad flavor - too many wontons - soup seemed to have been sitting a while and wontons had absorbed all the liquid. Steamed dumplings were so thick - it seemed like they were bao dumplings - and did not get cooked through. Did not enjoy crab Rangoon- was more cream cheese - not sweet at all. The sweet and sour chicken was ok - my kids ate it. Did not get a good feel from experience - one and done....

Justin K.

Yelp
Peking House is currently one of the only chinese food delivery options available for residents living in Hendersonville. The delivery drivers are always prompt and courteous, and I've never had a problem with my order being incorrect. The food is portioned very generously, and most of the main dishes have been of decent quality. I usually enjoy orange chicken, and their rendition of the dish was well flavored and nicely crisp. Unfortunately, I have had a bad experience with their egg drop wanton soup, which was shockingly bereft of any and all flavor - it was like drinking viscous water. Additionally, the crab rangoon was drenched in oil, and the filling was a rather depressing chunky mess -- quite unlike any crab rangoon I've tasted before. I would also caution against people wanting to order their sweet and sour dishes. Instead of a lighter, balanced batter that offers a crispy exterior texture to the sweet and sour pork, shrimp, etc., there is an abundance of heavy, soft batter that completely overwhelms the protein. I've decided on a 2 star rating because their delivery service is very competent, but their food is underwhelming, with certain dishes that certainly should be avoided.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars that's what it would be. I have been ordering food from here for 15 years. I order from here at least once a week. Last weekend was the last time. I'm pretty sure the owners daughter is now running things and she is just awful. She has zero concept of customer service. She acts as if you are bothering her! I was and have been dealing with that for quite a while now but no more. I ordered more than I usually do and was surprised by the almost 50.00 total that the delivery guy told me. They have a special for free General tsos when you spend 30.00 before tax. Another special for a free soda at 24.00. While I was on the phone ordering I thought I had ordered enough for the soda not the general tsos. So I told her to bring me a sprite. She never once mentioned to give me a total. She never said anything about it was over the 30.00 so did I want the general tsos instead. I of course called her back to inquire about this and she immediately blames me and basically said oh well you picked the sprite so to bad for you! Then she tells me she doesn't need my business anymore. I shut the door. Left the delivery guy literally holding the bag. Luckily I didn't give her a credit card. I don't need her Chinese food anymore. Or her bad attitude that comes with it. There's only hundreds of these places all over the city. I called Main Moon immediately. The man that answered the phone was very pleasant and brought me my food without any trouble. Bottom line. Skip this one. There's a dozen more right down the road that are happy to have your business.

Yelp
2nd review and I need to say this order was SALTY. Man, I was swollen the next morning and I like salt. Wow.
google avatar

Yelp
I moved to Hendersonville from Southern California and this is the first place that I have found that has the type of amazing food I am accustomed to! Everything I have tried, which is a lot, has always been hot, fresh, and delicious! I definitely recommend the General Tso's chicken and the house Lo Mein! Absolutely wonderful!!

Mitchell G.

Yelp
This was a very sad experience. I'm here in Hendersonville for an internship. I wanted to experience all the awesome whole in the wall restaurants. Hendersonville has awesome selections. I wanted to come to Peking next. Wow what a sad experience. My general tso chicken was no different than a frozen nugget dipped in sauce. The crab ragoons were very disappointing. Egg roll was no different than getting a egg roll at the frozen section at Walmart. For anybody visiting Hendersonville and want to try food selections from this city, don't make the mistake that I did and go to Peking House.
google avatar

Don S.

Yelp
The buffet side of Peking House appears to have closed permanently due to low sales volume. The Take-out side is still operating and has always been good; we've been getting all our Chinese take-out from them for last 10+ years. Nice friendly owner family and service is generally very fast.

Andrew J.

Yelp
Yes! The best Chinese take out in Hendersonville! Best prices, freshest ingredients. Everything I've ordered from there has been amazing! My father-in-law visits from time to time from WA state (lots of great Asian restaurants out there) and he can't wait to get his Peking fix. Support your local families! Eat local Hendersonville!
google avatar

Angie W.

Yelp
Best Chinese take out in Hendersonville! I've been going there for 15 years! Food is fresh and always good. They deliver and the delivery is fast. They even delivered to us out at my friends house on Anderson rd. when no other delivery place in town will go out that far. The sesame chicken is my families favorite and my favorite is the Hunan chicken. Must try it! Not sure why these ratings from 2010 are not good but I've never had bad food. The buffet was not successful I had it a few times and it seemed to be cold food for some reason.
google avatar

Kimberley L.

Yelp
I pass 3-4 different Chinese food places to get to these guys. Prices are decent and I've never had a single problem or something not prepared the way I asked for it. My kids and their friends go there so often they know what they order :) Definately a thumb up!
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Delicious and inexpensive. You just have to ignore the owners' ratchet kids always running around screaming if you dine in.

Yelp
I had never been to this place before as I'm not the area. My husband ordered our food. I'm sure there was some kind of break down in information, but when I called back after our 20 minute drive home they were not understanding what I was saying. I wanted the combos and instead I only received the meat and the lo mein, which cost more than the combos! I just wanted the rice and egg rolls. After several minutes of talking in circles I decided to drive back and just get a refund. The girl on the phone insinuated that maybe my husband didn't understand because "sometimes amigos don't understand". (Yes my husband is Mexican, but he speaks English well) they weren't going to give me a full refund because a few bites were gone (we assumed the rice was in the bottom and quit eating immediately when we realized it wasn't) the whole experience was insulting and rude, and I can't imagine a scenario where it's ever ok to talk to customers that way. I don't get out this way often, but I know where I will never go again!!
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
This is the best in town for me. We always get Cashew Chicken, egg rolls and my favorite, Crispy Orange Chicken. It is the best. They also have the best fried rice and egg drop soup of anyone in town. I have been eating here for almost 15 years. I have tried the others and always come back to them. I prefer them even over Panda Express, which is supposed to be so good. Try Panda's crispy orange chicken and then try theirs. Not even close. All the food is cooked fresh when you order it, not sitting in a pan buffet style. There are many Chinese restaurants in town, but overall, this one is best.
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Best Chinese restaurant in town. We love that they have tale out and deliver. This is a "once a month" stop for us (sometimes more)!
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
Always hot and fresh...love the fact they have spring rolls, unlike China Wok. The hot and sour soup is on point too. The crunchy noodles that come with the soup were a little off last time(kind of stale and tasted like they'd been cooked in old oil or something), but it's not a deal breaker..
google avatar

Sugar S.

Yelp
Wonton baby! Best delivery in Hendersonville. Crab Ragoon and Shrimp Toast is phenomenal!! Shirmp Toast is a childhood favorite and this is precisely the flavor profile, crunchy hot and sweet! Mandrian chicken, Szechuan Chicken and all beef dishes are amazing! The sweet gooey brown garlic sauce warms the soul. Delivered in 20 minutes and under every time! Chop Stick ready!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
The food has changed or gone downhill this past year. They put way too much sauce on meals. Rice is not good. I do like their wonton soup. The plus is they deliver. I have gotten sick from their food so I am sure there is ton of MSG. Not recommended for sure!
google avatar

Ruth H.

Yelp
I've always loved the food here. And the first time I ordered they were very busy but I still received my food in 10 minutes. And they decided to give me a free 2 liter of Coke! It was so nice!

Rick F.

Yelp
This is my first review yelp. I'm very disappointed In thus restaurant!! I ordered 4 egg rolls and received 1 and 10 crab ragoons and received 6. The food is good but they shorted me on my order and they know this and don't care. Please check your orders when you receive them!!!! They get 2 stars for screwing mr.
google avatar

Drea A.

Yelp
I have never tasted food this bad. I ordered sweet and sour shrimp and I could even chew the bite I took. Don't trust these people.

Genine D.

Yelp
It has taken an hour and a half to get my food. They refused to give a refund and cancel my order so I had to wait.

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I order from here regularly. I love the egg drop wonton soup! Also, I like that their crab Rangoon aren't the sweet ones. They also have no problems with making something the way you want it. And even though sometimes I'm concerned my order will get lost in translation I have never received the wrong food.

David C.

Yelp
Food was ok, but the live turtle in the open pond as you walk in is a little scary. Seems like this would be a health hazard or something. Can't you get salmonella from this?

Amanda W.

Yelp
This is certainly one of the better Chinese buffet restaurants I've been to since moving to the Nashville area. It is split into two sections: one half is strictly take-out and the other side is the buffet. There are 3 main buffet tables, two with dinner-food and soup and the other with desserts and fresh fruit. They also have a small selection of sushi. They have all the staples -- General Tso's chicken, sweet & sour chicken, egg drop and won ton soups, etc. There's also plenty of seating. The night we were there, it appeared that only one person was working to both clear plates and work at the cash register, so we did wait a little while to pay before we left.

Kristy R.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. I am a little picky about Chinese and I have never been disappointed with my order. We have been ordering delivery and take out from them for years and will continue to do so. Hopefully they keep delivering in our area. We really appreciate that they value customer loyalty, Thank you!

Rob C.

Yelp
Fast delivery and the food was good. The dumplings were great pan fried. Not a bad choice for a Friday night eat in.

N D.

Yelp
Always very good. I love the curry chicken, chicken on a stick, and their crab rangoons. Fast service and always friendly
