NYC Bars and Restaurants for Holiday Whiskey Cocktails | Eater

"This sprawling, two-level American restaurant in Midtown fits the bill for a multitude of occasions, whether you’re cheering on your team, dining with a large group, or meeting friends before a show at Madison Square Garden. Its bright, red-leather seats embody the spirit of the holidays, but you can really tap into the warming feeling of the season by ordering a whiskey sour with Jameson Black Barrel." - Rayna Rossitto

12 New York Spots to Sip Chardonnay on Memorial Day | Eater

"If your idea of an afterparty involves a raw bar, Pennsylvania offers a well-stocked option right near MSG for pre- or post-show drinks and oysters. They’re also a go-to spot for catching a game and soaking up the spillover playoff energy from the stadium. With wood paneling and tasteful styling, they avoid some of the sophomoric energy of a typical sports bar, although things may get rowdy if New York scores a game-winner." - Stephen Rubino

Perfect solo brunch spot Had a fantastic solo brunch at Pennsylvania 6. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the bottomless Bloody Marys — the mix is house-made, rich, and perfectly spiced. Service was smooth, and drinks kept flowing at just the right pace. Started with oysters, which were fresh and served with a freshly ground relish — a standout. Also tried the wings — not bad, but I’d skip them next time. The rest of the menu felt more refined. The vibe is upscale but relaxed, and ideal for solo diners. Big thanks to Mackenna, who was friendly, attentive, and made the experience feel genuinely welcoming. Definitely coming back.

When your in New York for vacation or just to go out and eat for brunch. CC the chef and Allen the waiter was absolutely fantastic. And the atmosphere is soooo relaxing. Mum and I was able to have a conversation without a bunch of noise. Thank you, we will be visiting again

Huge bar restaurant near penn station. This is the place to watch Buffalo bills games. They have giant tv screens and a huge food and drinks menu. So many beers on tap and they have non alcoholic options. The best part is the menu is not your typical sports bar. This almost is a higher end steakhouse level menu. They have a great raw bar as well. I recommend to start with their burger. It was fantastic !

Google
Solid American Fare with a Nice Night Vibe I’ve been to Pennsylvania 6 twice now, and both times the food has been really good—classic American dishes done right. The drinks are solid too, though I personally found the mimosa a bit too strong for my taste. The atmosphere is great, especially in the evening. I went around 8:00 PM and it wasn’t crowded, which made it feel relaxed and comfortable. It’s a nice spot if you’re looking for good food, good drinks (minus the mimosa for me!), and a laid-back nighttime vibe.

Google
Excellent food! Great for a great meal before going to MSG. Literally the best French Dip of my life. Fairly priced, warm service, fabulous drinks. Will definitely return.

Google
We had the brunch pizza, french toast w/ a side of sausage, and egg sandwich. The French toast, sausage, and egg sandwich were awesome. We didn't hate the pizza, but it wasn't our thing. The waiter was very attentive. Only thing was it was empty at close to 1 pm, which was strange and a bit awkward. The place was clean and pleasant, including the bathroom. We were going to try a nearby popular diner place, but after reading that it was mediocre and rushed, we opted for this place. We'll be back.

Google
Too expensive to for the food to be so mediocre. The tuna salad was very disappointing, it wasn’t nasty but definitely worst I’ve ever had and nothing else we ate was better than ok. Wish we went somewhere else on our last day of vacation.

Google
I went there with a bunch of friends to watch the Buffalo Bill’s vs Cardinals football game. This is the Bills backers bar in Manhattan. The atmosphere was total Buffalo which made the game super enjoyable. The server was very friendly and attentive. The wings were good and they had Buffalo beers and other Buffalo food. It’s a definite stop if you are on this super town and eager to watch the Bills on game day.

Yelp
Great place for group dining. Ribeye steak was amazing. they do cook it a little over, so if you want medium ask for medium rare. the cauliflower appetizer is really spicy. The pizzas were great and work well as a shared appetizer here. mexican corn dip was alright but worth skipping. location is great, close to msg, subway, path and LiRR.

Yelp
Great place to watch the game! As a bills fan from Buffalo, glad to find a bills backer bar in Manhattan so close to Penn Station. The wings were authentic, all the food was good, the Wait staff worked hard to keep up with a packed crowd. If we are ever in Manhattan during a bills game, we will be back.

Yelp
This is our third time here. It's always a solid choice. Simple but great menu, fantastic drinks and good service. The Buffalo Mac and cheese is so good. I've had the Penn burger, lobster roll and the kebabs. Everything is good!

Yelp
Great spot for some food and drinks. Came here with a big group during the World Series and had a blast. Great service and selection of drinks. Would visit again when I'm in the city.

Yelp
A fun bar and restaurant that's a stone's throw from MSG -- the USC Alumni Association hosts watch parties for games here, and they even decorated the bar with streamers and USC flags. They have huge screens and a fun vibe, would totally recommend for any sports fans or anyone going to a show nearby. I got the Elote Dip and it was solid to share.

Yelp
We had tickets for a NY Rangers playoff game and came for dinner. We walked in to find lifesize cutouts of Ranger players when we walked in! Their bar drinks were quite good, and their pub menu was extensive. We started with Middle Eastern hummus, and then the Penn6 burger and margherita pizza, which were very good. Their apple cobbler hit the spot to finish the meal. Overall, good quality food for a reasonable price (for NYC) and their servers were pleasant and helpful. Atmosphere was a little loud, but hey - it's a bar where everyone was going to the game afterwards! Definitely a good spot for pre-game meals, just two blocks from the Garden!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Staff was rude and unorganized. My wait time for a table changed from 15 minutes, to an hour and 45. Menu just looked ok, nothing spectacular. Went elsewhere
google avatar

Cheryl S.

Yelp
Went before Billy Joel at MSG. Food was good. Atmosphere was incredibly loud. It was hard to hear the others at our table.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here to catch a Bills game while traveling. Lucky to get the last booth reservation because this place was packed and rowdy, especially during a big Bills win. Service was very good especially considering how many peeps there were, our guy kept our drinks full and brought food out in timely fashion. We started with a soft pretzel then moved on to the main courses. Very solid wings, average size, good crisp and tangy medium sauce, real blue cheese! Spicy Rigatoni was a surprise hit, we finished it quickly and a random waitress came over and saw our delight and offered to get us some hot flatbread to soak up the remaining sauce. Incredible gesture and spectacular idea, yep that bowl was clean after we mopped up all the sauce. Great experience, highly recommended especially to watch the Bills!

Yelp
Location was close to our hotel and we had two small kids under ten so this was perfect. Food was good and the street corn dip was amazing. Highly recommend. Service was ok, she just wasn't engaged with her tables otherwise I would go back again.

Yelp
Evening started out fine. A group of us at the bar. As it got more crowded, the bartender got overwhelmed. That's fine- but he also got a bit snappy with us. He told us the wrong oysters- and served us ones we didn't want. Our vodka drinks were incredibly watered down, as well. The vibe is fun and the music was good though!
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
Came here for brunch and was not disappointed. The staff was quick and very on top of keeping our waters filled, which I always appreciate. It had a nice diner feel with the red booths. I got an espresso and the Steak and Eggs for my meal. Food was very good and steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. Gluten Free: A majority of the food can be made gluten free, and everything that can is marked on the menu.
google avatar

Johanna B.

Yelp
Okay so I have passed by Pennsylvania 6 NYC a gazillion times. Heard so much about it and since I'm arranging a group dinner to take place in the next couple weeks, I decided to test the waters and check them out. The place is massive and LOUD. I arrived early, but it was not long before it got crowded. Hello, it was Thursday. Their interior decor is known for their famous red booths. The music was blaring and carrying on a conversation could be challenging. This is definitely a fun HH place in the vicinity. I started with a smooth Pinot Noir and ordered the Organic Chicken accompanied by baby carrots and cauliflower on a bed of truffle parsley puree. The chicken was absolutely delicious, and I didn't leave a morsel behind. I would have to say that the service was pretty lackluster. Or was it just towards me since I was dining solo? It appeared that way. I'm not going to be nitpicky and deduct any stars since I enjoyed my dinner overall. I'm glad I tried it! Recommend.

Yelp
Came here before going to a show at Madison Square Garden. Pass it every day. So thought it would be worth checking out. What a disappointment and WASTE of money. First there was the wait at the door (despite them being pretty empty) with the hostess too busy flirting with a young man who had just finished. Um, hello???!!! Then there was the sitting at our table in a section with one other table and waiting 15 minutes for our server to find her way to our table. Maybe if they had a busy rush crowd for MSG, it would be understandable. But they didn't. Considering that there were three major events at MSG and they're so close, yet so not busy, it should have been a huge red flag to go elsewhere. A different server came by twice to give us water and tell us our server would be there soon (um, why didn't he just take drink or appetizer orders???). Seriously, they were so NOT busy. Bu alas our server was MIA. I'm guessing that it's not a pulled house since the other servers looked at us and walked by us but didn't step in to help our server out in any way shape or form. Even if they not a pulled house that other servers weren't looking out for the restaurant overall, and help one another, says a lot about morale there. Finally, she does come which resulted in us having to order appetizers and our mains and to alert her we had a show. We ended up having plenty of time since she had our apps and entrees delivered together. Well, actually one of our main came out before the entree. This isn't a new place. Maybe it does well during happy hour when people are too drunk to notice how overpriced and underwhelming this is.

Yelp
Met a former colleague after work to catch up. Didn't think there was anything that looked so nice this close to Madison Square Garden. Arrived at 5:00, and it was great. By the time we left at 7:00, it was mobbed, loud and unbearably HOT. Oysters before 6:00 were on special, and very delicious. The folks next to us got a pizza which looked good, so we added one - pepperoni with hot honey. Meh, trying to be like Roberta's, couldn't pull off the sauce (too sweet). Good enough. Bartender served the drinking crowd well. I was happy to leave when we did as it was getting a little nutso even on a Tuesday. Recommend maybe for lunch or earlier happy hour. And a smaller crowd of 2-3 people unless you arrange something beforehand.
google avatar

Donesha T.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of coming back for a second visit with more friends. Let me start off by saying the bartender will treat you well! My friend arrived earlier than us by 20 mins and her "mai tai" was well poured. It wasn't exactly a Mai tai. But she enjoyed it. We were offered a brunch social. Good music. Super friendly staff The good: the bottomless drinks are tasty! The Bellinis are really good and not like other places that barely place Prosecco unless you request more. Everyone at the table isn't required to do bottomless in order for the group to have bottomless. Wide array of brunch options. Table tried: steak and eggs, French toast, huevos rancheros with side of steak, fried chicken sandwich. Some options required an additional fee on top of brunch prefix. Overall, everyone enjoyed there meals. Huevos rancheros we're okay but not the best I've ever had.

Rachael R.

Yelp
This is for Buffalo Bills games only. Don't contact Penn 6 at all for game day reservations and definitely don't contact the NYCBBB too early to reserve a table to watch a Bills game. Too early means not the month the game is in. So I tried to make a reservation in October for a mid November game and was told it was too early and to try again in November. When I tried in November, no spots left. On game day arrived early to get some spots at the bar... there were only about 15 actual seats for over 130 ft of bar space. Was told that Penn 6 actually REMOVES bar seats for Bills games because "it would take them forever to put the chairs back." If we can't sit, we can't eat. And we were hungry. Decided to go to a little buffalonian owned establishment called ALL-STARS bar and grill on W. 57th. If you're tired of standing and want to support a real BILLS bar, go to ALL stars. They don't have the hype of Penn 6 but they have way more TVs, buffalonian owners and don't care how long it takes them to put away bar chairs. Bye Penn 6. Hello ALL-STARS.

Yelp
Great place for bottomless brunch. Came in to a full dining room that was a tad too noisy for our preference. But the servers continued to hustle and brought out steak and eggs out quickly. The steak was cooked perfectly to temperature. The country fries tasty, and the eggs really awesome. They even had grated horseradish for our steaks. Thank you Elvis for running a tight front of house on a busy Sunday morning

Sara G.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner after a long day of sightseeing. Audrey took great care of us and we enjoyed visiting with her. Our drinks (Manhattan and CoCo Loco) were delish. Dinner... we needed something easy. Hubby had the Cobb salad, I had a flatbread. They really hit the spot! Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Danie R.

Yelp
It was ok. Happy hour was cheap and worth it. 5/6 oysters were not rotten, but the one rotten one almost made me vomit. You really can't go wrong with burrata! The corn dip was very liquidy. I do like the vibe, doesn't feel like midtown. Service was fine.
google avatar

Sandar S.

Yelp
I have been here several times before the pandemic . This was the first time after the pandemic. The service was still okay with quick and observant waiters. But the quality of foods are not really same as it used to be. Lobster roll is a bit bland with cheap bread. A tad pricey for one roll with very little lobster. My cousin ordered veggies hotpot which was like a leftover rice mixed with curry. I didn't even bother to take the pic. Corn dip is the best among our orders. Drinks are just okay. And they have COVID 5% charge in additional to tax.. I will think twice to come again.
google avatar

Jose S.

Yelp
We had brunch on a Saturday and while I can totally recommend the steak and eggs.. all the other dishes were not good. The huevos rancheros were very dry, the coffee extra bitter. The service was ok, and the ambiance is good.

Yelp
I've come here a few times for drinks and snacks. I usually sit outside, but given different temperatures and Weathers I've also started to sit inside now during Covid. They've done a good job of keeping tables separate. I also usually request quieter tables and they are able to comply. They have a lot of seating, a large amount of space at the bar and lots of smaller tables in two very large rooms. The wait staff usually knows what specials they have for the day and are very friendly and helpful. I usually think of this as an upscale bar with good service. I've tried the tacos as well as the I'll have another cocktail and the Manhattan 36. I also really like the Tuna sashimi on avocado which is really good and I would recommend getting that every time. I don't really recommend a lot of the vegetarian dishes except perhaps for the elote. The cauliflower is deep fried and over sweet but I did like the shishito peppers. I'll be back for sure, it's one of the better spots near Penn Station.
google avatar

Cat C.

Yelp
So good, lots of gf options. I have celiac and felt safe eating there. Service was great. Love how they play the music of the band performing at msg.
google avatar

Flora H.

Yelp
I came here for lunch when looking for something close to the office where we could actually sit down and have a nicer meal. The options in this area are rather limited and it looked promising. The ambiance was okay - it feels like somewhere that turns into a bar at night, not a cool gastropub, but a step up from a divey bar. The food was pretty pricey at about $30 for a lunch entree, but the servings were large. I had the chicken and it was pretty much half a chicken. It was okay; probably not something that I'd order again even though the server told me it's one of their best dishes. The skin was a bit fatty and the chicken didn't taste like it was of the highest quality. Wasn't bad, but also wasn't great. For the price point I'd expect a bit more. This is somewhere I'd come back to grab a drink and maybe some sides but probably not a meal.

Yelp
I had a decent experience dining here. i went with a group of 6 and the service was excellent to accommodate us. seemed to be an average gathering size for the spot. The mac and cheese was buffalo which wasn't great for vegetarians like myself, so i went with the margarita pizza. Getting a pizza at a place like this near penn station is just not what i would recommend to anyone, but the espresso martini was good an 8.2/10
google avatar

Barry H.

Yelp
Great place. Love the atmosphere, and the manager was really great. We got a bunch of appetizers to share and those were amazing. Definitely order the flatbread.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Amazing time. Our server Molly, where do I start. You're lucky if you get her and if you don't comeback and request her for your service you're truly missing out. Shes more than a server, she's your friend. She made our experience amazing and I would recommend her to anybody visiting. Go Bills

Yelp
Always been a fan of this establishment. The staff is by far one of the best around. If I ever go alone, I never have to pull out my phone as the bartenders and management will always keep me entertained. The food is perfect every time!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for a private event. Sorry, no pictures. We were served cocktail hour style with servers bringing different apps/tapas around. Food that went around was grilled chicken with bbq sauce, tuna tartare, sliders, Burrata, sliders, pepperoni pizza and margarita pizza. My favorite was the tuna tartare!! Delicious and fresh. It was served with mango on a plantain. It was better than sushi grade tuna. Second would be Burrata. It was served with some bread and bruschetta. Pizza. The pepperoni pizza was very yummy and had a sweetness to it. The margarita pizza was good as well. I didn't care for the grilled chicken. It was basic grilled chicken and the bbq sauce tasted like it came from a container. I don't need red meat, so I can't comment on the sliders but they looked yummy. Service was great! The servers made sure got something! Bartenders were good as well. My boyfriend and I are planning on coming back for dinner!

Yelp
Was attempting to go to Friedman's which is next door to here, but the line for Friedman's was way too long, so my friend and I opted to do brunch here instead. So glad we were able to eat here as it was a great option. We were seated right away by our host who told us about the bottomless brunch option which is $40, and includes an entree for up to $18. I opted for this because I wanted to have the NY experience as bottomless brunch is NOT an option in MA. I ordered a chicken sandwich as my entree, and it was ok. I thought the chicken lacked seasoning and felt the biscuit was too heavy with the chicken. The fries served alongside were hot, fresh and crispy so I really enjoyed those! For my bottomless drink options, I chose a mimosa and Bellini which are great Sunday morning brunch choices. What I really loved about this place was the atmosphere. It's very large with multiple seating options and I appreciated the service. The hostess was very kind, and so were the servers. I would definitely return again when back in NY and just order something different !

Yelp
I order their housemade kettle chips very frequently because they are the best chips in the city (lol) but unfortunately there has been ONE single time when the order was seamless. S/O to the one time the male manager fulfilled my order. Every other time, I have experienced issues. Charging me the inaccurate amount, giving me the smaller brown box of chips, refusing me the bigger box, not knowing what chips I am referring to, arguing about all of the above... so as a patient and loyal chip consumer, I am requesting that the chips are put on the menu as a side-order so I can avoid further gaslighting. I have probably ordered them 70x and literally faced issues 69 of those times. I have also dined in and I would not recommend the place for it's customer service.

Yelp
I couldn't be more grateful to have celebrated our 25th birthday at Pennsylvania 6. My sister and I were in contact with Nicole, who made the whole planning process super simple. We had about 27 guests attend with a 2 hour optional open bar package, which was very convenient considering we had some guest who do not drink. She was also able to be in great communication with one of our friends to decorate the area with balloons, signs and confetti, which was a wonderful surprise. At the end of the night we were given sparklers and champagne which was a great way to end our celebration. Jake the bartender was super friendly to everyone and made us feel greatly attended to! Overall, wish we could do the night again and can't wait to visit in the future.

Yelp
Ordered drinks and food. Hubby had a margarita I had bourbon and coke. Ordered salmon teriyaki with baby carrots and asparagus, delicious! Thank you for a great meal!

Yelp
Definitely one of the nicer sports bars in the Midtown area. It's brisk walk to Madison square Garden if you're going to a show or catching a basketball game. A great place to pre or post game and even grab a meal. The kitchen does really good work and the services is very quick without lacking of quality. Bartenders know their craft and take care of you. They do require you to show your card before you take a seat. During the weekends it's probably the best bet to make a reservation if you plan on getting a table. This is a Buffalo bills backer bar and gets hectic on the Sunday when they play and it's usually a lot of fun as well.
google avatar

Pamela B.

Yelp
A little pricy but the drinks are pretty good. The chicken wings were a little too burnt but the flavors were great. Crab cakes too fishy. Pass on them. The creme bruleeeeeeee OMG. AMAZING! Staff is very nice.

Kristen B.

Yelp
visiting NYC on vacation in the Madison Square Garden area. Stopped in for lunch. The environment was nice. The staff was kind and courteous. The food quality was excellent and the pricing was great. I would definitely recommend stopping in if you have the opportunity.

Yelp
This is likely to be my regular go-to option for pre-MSG. It's only a couple of blocks from the Garden, and they're doing a quality job. The menu has options for a light bite, or something more robust for the hungry. The beer options are robust. The bar area is spacious. Reservations recommended as they get crowded due to its proximity to MSG. Our server got tied up with a very large table and we were trying to expediate our experience due to an event. Another server was quick to recognize the situation and he stepped in seamlessly to accommodate us. I was planning on eating half of a burger. It was so good that I polished it off. The accompanying fries were a crisp Belgian variety. I had to stop myself from devouring all of those as well. My wife went with the Hummus. She asked for no pita, as she's GF. However, she was delighted to learn from our server that they offered a GF pita. I'll admit, it was pretty darn good! It was a robust portion. Served as an app, it was a meal onto itself. Could easily be shared as an app by 3-4 people. Only snafu on the evening was towards the end when we ordered a 2nd round of drinks, only to have only 1 of 2 arrive. Fortunately, the drink arrived for the person who really wanted it and not for the person who was on the fence... Menu could use a few more salad options. Definitely will return.

Yelp
Had a really great time here. We were a group of 13 and the restaurant was easily able to accommodate us. The wait staff was really nice and helpful. We had someone who is gluten free with other food allergies and the staff was very helpful and accommodating. The food was excellent. I had an impossible burger with French and the truffle aioli. Highly recommend the aioli. The price was also great for bottomless brunch. Great location near penn station so very easy to get to for friends who are coming from LI and NJ. Overall, was great and I recommend.

Yelp
Stopped by for a beer and some wings. Beautiful restaurant with large TVs to watch sports. Great service.

Yelp
Go Bills! This is only a review of Buffalo Bills game day. It is a fun place to watch the game to a degree. We were able to get an rsvp on the Tuesday before for a party of 8. Given nice central table with plenty of viewing angles. Service was attentive as can be. Waiter was good. $5 canned labatts and buds. Not sure price Of canned vodka drinks. Food was fine. Breakfast pizza very good. Beef on Kimmelweck eh. Our age group was upper 20's to 30s to 60 and 70. They blast party music at full volume until the game actually begins and not a second sooner. They blast music during every commercial. You are literally having to scream at each other in order to talk or hear. I'm hard of hearing and it was friggin loud. The younger ones probably didn't care as they were enjoying seeing each other after a series of months and such. Us older ones will never return. Yes it's a primo bills bar but there are others and it was a bills jets game so could've watched anywhere. Glad to the Bills won but most of us did not enjoy being there at all due to the volume of the music the entire game. Sucked.

Yelp
Legitimately the most mediocre steakhouse I've ever eaten at in New York City. I don't know if post pandemic did this or if it has always been this way, but the food was really not quality. Service was excellent, the server chose the perfect wine when I asked for suggestions, the restaurant is beautiful, but the food was just okay. I guess this is the new NYC.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Stopped by to have a drink after Thanksgiving dinner waiting on 7:20pm LIRR to Lindenhurst. Cosmopolitan...I told bartender to make my martini with less lime juice so it won't be so acidic. My cosmo was perfect! Thank you! Nice ride back to Long Island on a cosmo ride

Yelp
They give you a comment card with your check so here are my answers: This was my first time in, I am a nyc resident. My favorite thing about my visit was the staff, they were very nice and squeaked us in without a reservation. I would change the wait for food, they were definitely understaffed. My compliments again would go to the staff who were all working their hardest. The food was fine. Good for a casual atmosphere but nice decor averaged priced meal.

Cheryll F.

Yelp
My go to place for dinner and drinks before a MSG show. Great food and service. I always see people who are going to the same show so the pre-show vibe is exciting.

Yelp
The food was great- had mimosas and the orange juice was so fresh n sweet!!! Service was amazing!

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Came here for a bite before a Knicks game a few weeks ago and was very pleased. Originally walked in because the location is right next to MSG and heard it was the go-to spot to booze before a game :-) Must order: -Parma flatbread (super thin prosciutto yummm) -Blue crab Mac & cheese -Tartufo flatbread -Charred Spanish octopus (so freaking tender!) -Pomegranate duck Also love sitting at the bar with a dirty martini. Have come back several times since because the food, drinks, bartenders & service are all PHENOMENAL.

Philip C.

Yelp
Terrible service and even worse management. Do NOT go here. Never got the food we ordered--so no idea if it was good.

Yelp
Came here with friends for brunch and had a great dining experience! Food was really good. The brunch pizza was one of the best I've had in a while - would highly recommend since the toppings are so unique for a pizza. Pizza dough was chewy and very fresh. Cornbread was not dry at all like I expected. Menu is huge with a lot of good options. Would definitely come back again!
