How to Visit Scotland's Inner Hebrides—No Sailing Experience Required | Condé Nast Traveler

"Staying on the Isle of Mull I noted Pennygate Lodge as a small six‑room Georgian guesthouse with a well‑tended garden, views of Craignure Bay and a destination restaurant that hones in on local produce." - Alexander Barlow

What a fabulous place to stay! Super comfortable accommodation with fine dining in the restaurant downstairs. Our bedroom and ensuite had stunning views over the water, a lovely king-size bed and copious hot water for bath and shower. |The cooked breakfasts were delicious and set us up for a day exploring Mull. Dinner at the restaurant was a real treat, starting with a local G&T in the lounge. Thank you Fiona & Tony, our stay was perfect!

Pennygate Lodge was a perfect base to explore the Isle of Mull. We had a Beautiful room and bathroom (Duart) with stunning views from our window. The owners have created a really lovely little hotel that is beautifully decorated and has real charm and style. The breakfast was really good and the Dinner in their restaurant open Tuesday-Saturday was fabulous. Fresh locally sourced Mussels and Atlantic cod were highlights. Little touch of a fridge with milk and water on the landing was much appreciated and the bed was very comfortable. We really couldn’t fault it. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and we are already planning a return visit next year.

Disclaimer: we didn’t stay here, only stopped by for dinner but it was one of the best meals we had during our 2+ weeks in Scotland. The menu is small, but each dish was cooked to perfection - fresh ingredients and very flavourful. The desserts and cheese board were also good too. Tony (the owner) had a great wine list and gave exceptional recommendations. The small dining room allows for an intimate dining experience and personable interactions with the super friendly staff.

Everything about Pennygate is first class. The hotel is immaculate and looks as though it's just been decorated it's so smart. The food and service are fantastic and Tony is a genial host. The lounge has the most fantastic view from a huge window over the Sound of Mull and over the garden which, in May, has a bluebell meadow. It's two minutes drive from the ferry and very central on the island. Choose a room with a sea view to wake up to. The dinner menu may be small, but everything on it is a treat, imaginative and beautifully presented.

Room and food excellent. Lovely clean rooms, comfortable bed and bedding and with tea/good quality coffee, kettle etc. |Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. Good quality fresh ingredients and beautifully cooked. .|Lovely view from our window and the garden is peaceful to sit in and see the boats come and go from the small harbour.

Mull oh Mull so good they should name it twice. No where better to stay than beautiful Pennygate lodge. If you have travelled straight over from the mainland on the ferry , Pennygate is just a two minute drive from the ferry terminal. The location could not be better . The views from the front lounge and dining room are wonderful. Fiona and Tony make you very welcome. We loved the location as it gave us a chance to explore the south of the island. Our hosts were so helpful with their local knowledge. We enjoyed truly wonderful food on the island but perhaps our best food was in Pennygate. Both dinner and breakfast were divine .|Plan well in advance to ensure you get into this little gem.

A wonderful situation looking over attractive gardens to the harbour with glorious sunsets. We had a warm welcome and the attention to detail was first class. Everyone went the extra mile to ensure that our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. The food was first class at breakfast and dinner, using local ingredients (especially seafood) with clever finishing touches. It is not the cheapest hotel on the Island of Mull but it may be the best.

Perfect stay. Excellent location. Super clean and comfortable. Tony was the most gracious host. Food was also top notch. I highly recommend and we will definitely be back. We stayed in the Iona room,I want to recreate that bathroom in my next house!

Yelp
This was the loveliest place we stayed on our entire tour of Scotland--breathtakingly beautiful, peerless hospitality, the restaurant is a treasure; Tony and Fiona have turned this historic mansion into a gem. It was once the parsonage, the minister's house, for the church across the street; he held a prestigious role in the community and the house shows it. There are only six rooms total (so book early!) plus the dining room and living room/lounge downstairs, and that coziness fostered friendly connections with the other guests. Our first night there, Tony built a fire in the fire pit on the front lawn and we pulled benches up close to it to enjoy the warmth as we watched the sun set over the bay. Another night we enjoyed sunset from the couch in the lounge, looking out the large front window, browsing coffee-table books of Scotland's landscapes and chatting with another guest over wine and later, whisky. Matthew, the very personable and knowledgeable host, made several excellent beverage recommendations based on what we told him we liked; it all felt somehow so luxurious and so homey at the same time. We stayed in Torosay (each room is named for a notable location around the Isle of Mull) and our window looked out over the back garden, where in the morning I could see the (brilliant, awards-worthy) head chef Pauline cutting herbs for the restaurant. The room had an adorable tea-and-coffee service tray on the dresser with a mini-French-press, electric kettle, and coffee grounds in a mason jar, and the hallway mini-fridge had tiny bottles of milk, for that ultra-important first cup of coffee. Everything was immaculately clean; there were cozy bathrobes and thoughtful amenities like makeup remover and cotton pads in the bathroom; the shower water pressure was great; the bed was super comfortable; we were even able to have some laundry done while we were there. (Thanks again, Fiona!) During your stay I also highly recommend you check out the pastries at the recently-opened bakery just across the street, Chronicle, and stroll over to the pub for a pint at the Craignure Inn. I hope you have as joyful a trip to Mull as we did; this beautiful lodge and the lovely people we met there will always have a special place in my heart. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
