How to Visit Scotland's Inner Hebrides—No Sailing Experience Required | Condé Nast Traveler

"Staying on the Isle of Mull I noted Pennygate Lodge as a small six‑room Georgian guesthouse with a well‑tended garden, views of Craignure Bay and a destination restaurant that hones in on local produce." - Alexander Barlow

My husband and I had a splendid stay here! We had the Iona room with its lovely bathroom and super comfortable bed. The room was large and so welcoming. Breakfast each morning was delicious and we dined in the restaurant two nights. All of our meals were delicious and served with care. The lodge is well placed for exploring the island and each morning Tony helped us plan our day out and about. The entire team at the lodge is warm, friendly, and helpful. I’d love the chance to stay here again!

We stayed at Pennygate Lodge in Craignure on Isle of Mull for 2 nights in September... We were in the "Duart" room, and it was absolutely fabulous! Spacious, modern, beautiful views, luxurious bathroom, and great location!! The restaurant was closed (unfortunately), as it was Sunday & Monday, but there was a great pub just a 5 minute walk away! We also enjoyed driving up to Tobermory in the north (the exciting one-track roads!!)... Breakfasts were delicious! Fiona & Tony were very pleasant!! We recommend Pennygate Lodge! Our stay at Pennygate Lodge was unforgettable. We arrived late on our first night and had missed dinner, but the owner kindly prepared a cheese plate for us—a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel welcome.||The food here is truly exceptional. The chef’s creations are the best meals I have ever had, beautifully presented and full of flavor. Every breakfast and dinner was a highlight of our trip, and we looked forward to each meal.||The rooms are lovely, quiet, and cozy. They were a little warm, but still very comfortable, and the showers were absolutely wonderful—spacious with great water pressure.||What really stood out was the kindness of the staff. The host was incredibly thoughtful, always making sure we had everything we needed and even slipping us extra focaccia bread because she noticed how much we loved it.||Pennygate Lodge is more than just a place to stay—it’s a warm, welcoming experience with world-class food. We can’t wait to come back!

I thoroughly enjoyed my four-nights at the Pennygate Lodge. The peaceful setting and central location are perfect for exploring the island. I would recommend a minimum of four nights to see Iona and Staffa, Lochbuie and the standing stones, and Tobermory. It was wonderful to come home at the end of the day and dine well at the Lodge. I loved my room. Owners Fiona and Tony are warm hosts and they work with a small but mighty staff.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pennygate Lodge. Our room was lovely and very comfortable. The house is charming with a wonderful garden and view down to the harbor. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed chatting with the servers as well as the chef who bakes fresh sourdough bread every day. One server even loaned me her midge bug spray for my hike! Tony and Fiona were both such welcoming hosts and very gracious when we forgot to return our key and had to leave it with crew person on the Cal Mac Ferry.|We regret that we weren't there on a night that they served dinner (Sunday and Monday in Aug. 2025), but we are sure it is very good. Craignure is very small, but the location is convenient to the ferry. It's a good idea to make dinner reservations in August.

This is an exceptional restaurant with rooms. The rooms are comfortable, and roomy. Housekeeping was well done. Room rates are very fair for the quality.||The food served by the restaurant for the included breakfast was varied, generous and tasty.||The dinners were special in taste and presentation. I had the cad. A simple cod and peas transformed into a delicious surprise. ||Restaurant service was very good.

Our hosts, Fiona & Tony were very pleasant!! We would recommend Pennygate to anyone that may visit Isle of Mull! ||Carolyn & Rick

Yelp
This was the loveliest place we stayed on our entire tour of Scotland--breathtakingly beautiful, peerless hospitality, the restaurant is a treasure; Tony and Fiona have turned this historic mansion into a gem. It was once the parsonage, the minister's house, for the church across the street; he held a prestigious role in the community and the house shows it. There are only six rooms total (so book early!) plus the dining room and living room/lounge downstairs, and that coziness fostered friendly connections with the other guests. Our first night there, Tony built a fire in the fire pit on the front lawn and we pulled benches up close to it to enjoy the warmth as we watched the sun set over the bay. Another night we enjoyed sunset from the couch in the lounge, looking out the large front window, browsing coffee-table books of Scotland's landscapes and chatting with another guest over wine and later, whisky. Matthew, the very personable and knowledgeable host, made several excellent beverage recommendations based on what we told him we liked; it all felt somehow so luxurious and so homey at the same time. We stayed in Torosay (each room is named for a notable location around the Isle of Mull) and our window looked out over the back garden, where in the morning I could see the (brilliant, awards-worthy) head chef Pauline cutting herbs for the restaurant. The room had an adorable tea-and-coffee service tray on the dresser with a mini-French-press, electric kettle, and coffee grounds in a mason jar, and the hallway mini-fridge had tiny bottles of milk, for that ultra-important first cup of coffee. Everything was immaculately clean; there were cozy bathrobes and thoughtful amenities like makeup remover and cotton pads in the bathroom; the shower water pressure was great; the bed was super comfortable; we were even able to have some laundry done while we were there. (Thanks again, Fiona!) During your stay I also highly recommend you check out the pastries at the recently-opened bakery just across the street, Chronicle, and stroll over to the pub for a pint at the Craignure Inn. I hope you have as joyful a trip to Mull as we did; this beautiful lodge and the lovely people we met there will always have a special place in my heart. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
