Pension Sakuraya

Very nice stay! The owner is so kind, we had a great time. Also very good value!! Their bath is nice! Get the breakfast if you can, it was delicious. About 15min walk to the beach I think, kinda tiring tbh but still ok.

A lovely stay by an incredibly welcoming host, Mr Yamamoto, who was very accommodating despite our very late arrival time. He made sure we had everything we needed, spoke great English and was incredibly thorough and friendly at the same time. We felt incredibly taken care of. The place was filled with memories and was a very charming space. Our room was a Japanese styled one with the view of the ocean which was incredible in the morning. The toilets and baths are shared. Would definitely recommend driving to the location if possible as it is on top of a hill. I look forwards to visiting again in the future!

Look no further if you are searching for pension/guesthouse with authentic personal touch in Shimoda/Southern Izu. Absolutely delightful hosts in Mr & Mrs Yamamoto. Located halfway up a hill overlooking the beautiful Shirahama Beach. Well-appointed western style and Japanese tatami rooms to choose from. We had the western twin bed with ensuite room which faced the East. Great view, saw the sun rose just from our panoramic windows. Whole property was spotlessly clean and very homely. Japanese style rooms are without ensuite but the communal toilets are close by, really clean and comfortable to use. 2 Communal bathrooms with nice Onsen. Private use of bath could be arranged. Surrounded by nature. Excellent value though might not be suitable for people who have difficulties walking 400m from the main road, up a slope, with luggage. For those who drive, it was easy to find and has parking on site. We stayed only one night but wish we could stay longer, it was that kind of place and hosts.

The pension is quiet and ideally located on a hill overlooking the ocean and beach. It is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The owners are super welcoming and kind. They pay attention to every detail, speak English, and are ready to help with anything. Coming by bus from Shimoda station was easy. The S31 stops at the beach and it’s a 400 meter walk up from there. There is a 7-11 and Family Mart nearby, so it’s very convenient. There is also a lovely BBQ restaurant overlooking the ocean about a 15 minute walk away. The beach is nice, and lots of surfers. I would definitely stay here again!

A great place! It's a bit steep to reach the pension, so beware if you have any issues with walking, but it is still very well located with a beautiful view over the ocean. The rooms are cozy and very clean, for an affordable prices. The owners are lovely and helpful, able to give you advices and/or help if needed. We love our stay there and will definitely come back if possible.

Host was extremely accommodating! He spoke great English, and gave us good tips on where to visit. He even gave us a farewell postcard each at the end of our stay with his own photos. Highly recommend!

We (2 adults, two kids) loved Pension Sakuraya. The beach is fantastic (more beaches are just around the corner, but you need your own car). We had the beach to ourselves as high season hadn't begun yet. The water was refreshing and super-clean. Our host Mr. Yamamoto was however the highlight of our stay. His English is brilliant and he is a great source for travel information, off the beaten path tips, Japanese culture etc etc. Our room (Japanese style) was comfortable and the communal onsen was also good. Food: I agree with the other reviewers... it was awesome!!! Try the home made plum wine - sooooo good.

Probs: ||Traditional japanese guesthouse with amazing hosts! Situated about 500m from the beach uphill. The whole place has more homelike feeling than hotel/guesthouse. Mr. Yamamoto (host) was very welcoming and helped us with everything. This guy knows everything about surroundings! Breakfast was really good and the dinner also! We has a western style room, which was ok. Western rooms has own bathrooms. I suggest trying japanese style rooms! ||||Cons: Western rooms are a bit outdated, but they on the other hand fit perfect for the atmosphere of the place! ||||Overall: Thumbs up for this place! Great value for your money! Mr. Yamamoto and his wife are superb! Thank you guys for great hospitality!
