Pentagoet Inn & Pub

After an ambitious, long weekend of exploring the Maine coastline, what a treat it was to land in the gorgeous village of Castine in perhaps one of the most charming inn's I've ever stayed in. The owners, Matt & George, could not have been more welcoming from the moment we walked in the front door. The property itself is oozing with rich history and the interiors have been brilliantly restored (well done, George!), making this stay feel like both a step into the past and luxury pampering. Matt is quite the chef, and the inn's evening menu sings with local comfort foods, each item delicious and unique (we tried most of the menu). Downeast Maine may have stolen my heart on this trip, but it's the Pentagoet that has been top of mind since we left. I can't wait to return!

We had a two night reservation for an early fall getaway and left after one night. On the plus side, the bar area is cute, the cocktails were good and we had a fine dinner. Our room, 1C in the Perkins House, had a renovated bathroom and the towels were nice.||The carpet in the entrance of the Perkins Building was dirty and well worn and it did not create a welcoming impression upon entering. Further, our room, a dog friendly room, was less than acceptable. The carpet looked terribly dirty and stained - sort of a dark camel color with spills and spots. The upholstered chairs were covered in a “brownish” paisley like fabric - the kind that probably hides dirt very well and therefore made us very skeptical of how dirty they might be given the condition of the carpet. The mattress was very uncomfortable - especially on the left side. I would be surprised if that mattress was purchased in the last decade. We had a two night reservation and left after one night because of the condition of the room. When we checked out, George acknowledged the condition of the carpet in our room and said it was being replaced in the winter. As I noted when we left, I can’t fathom that the owners would have found that room acceptable for them and their dog had they stayed in it at someone else’s inn.

We couldn’t be more delighted with our four day/three night stay at the Pentagöet Inn this past September. Each space on the main floor is a nostalgic adventure crafted by George, one of the two proprietors. The courtyard out back and 2nd floor library are also not to be missed. Our room (#7) on the 3rd floor, similarly decorated and furnished, overlooked the bay and each morning was a unique experience. From a gorgeous sunrise to a serene mist on the water, Maine’s beauty was on display. I’m finally getting to the best part: the dining. The cuisine Matt, the other proprietor, put together was fabulous and catered to our dietary restrictions. Every Tuesday evening there’s dining with live jazz on the porch that you'll definitely enjoy. Thank you Matt & George for making our anniversary getaway so special.

This Victorian Mansion whisks you to another time and place, where neighbors mingle and music fills the summer air. The wraparound porch hosts Tuesday night Jazz and the innkeepers have special events throughout the season. Recently, we went to the Christmas party with Santa, free appetizers and beverages (including wine and beer) if you brought a toy for their Toys 4 Tots gift drive. They happen to be the biggest collector in Maine and sure know how to host a party!

We loved our stay at Pentagoet Inn. It was our first time in Castine, which was absolutely beautiful. The Pentagoet does a wonderful job of providing the full guest experience. We enjoyed cocktails in the charming lounge on Sunday and Oyster Mondays, featuring a local oyster farmer. Special shout-out to Emma who not only made fantastic cocktails, but also provided lots of recommendations around town. Breakfast is delicious, and Patricia brings the flavor! The rooms are lovely with wonderful character and history. Our only disappointment was leaving on Tuesday and missing the jazz dinner. If you're visiting Acadia, make sure to stop at Castine and the Pentagoet Inn!

The Pentagoet Inn is the kind of place you enter as a customer and very quickly are transformed into a longtime friend. |We absolutely loved every single thing about it. The owners are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. Our room was comfortable and spacious and the breakfasts (really, more like brunch for us) were delicious - shout out to Patricia! Our dinner was excellent and we appreciated the generous pours as we celebrated!|The parlor and bar/lounge rooms are just fabulous and seem like the perfect place to play 'I Spy' while sipping one of their wonderful cocktails ...|We cannot wait to come back!

We had a wonderful stay at the Pentagoet Inn. It really is a magical place. We woke up to beautiful sunrises over the water from our room. The food and cocktails were delicious and the overall ambience was relaxing. Highly recommend the Oyster night in the courtyard. Matt and George are incredible hosts and we will be back!

We discovered the Pentagoet last summer and made a point to return this year. Matt and George are wonderful stewards of this beautiful Inn. The staff provides great care in making sure your stay is enjoyable. The food is delightful and you must dine at least once during your stay! Castine is one of Maine's greatest destinations enhanced by this charming Inn! We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Excellent everything across the board. Food is superb. Fresh selections of Maine seafood. For me, vegetarian options. Yay! Ambiance is off the charts. Quaint and nostalgic. Staff is top notch. Make this a stop on your travels.

My stay at the Pentagoet Inn was incredible! It felt like a fairytale. I stayed in room 9, which for an inn that is more than 200 years, was huge. The bed was comfortable and the shower pressure was incredible! The breakfast was delicious and we also ate dinner at the hotel! The lobster pot pie will haunt me in my dreams because it was that good! Finally, the best part of the Inn are the two owners Matt and George. They made us feel like guests in their house. And if you're a history nerd ask Matt to share with you the history of the inn. It's truly remarkable. I can't wait to return.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Pentagoet Inn while visiting our son at MMA. Such a great place with the most hospitable owners. The atmosphere and vibe were welcoming and felt like home. We had the pleasure of sitting for drinks at the pub. They had a variety of cocktails to choose from and a delicious spread of food items. We'll definitely be back again. This might be our go to home when we come out to MMA!

Stayed here for 2 nights. Accommodations were cozy and nice. We stayed in the main house and had our 2 preteens in the other house. Breakfast was delicious and dinner was great as well. The owners are lovely and the grounds are beautiful.

Amazing inn, the rooms are beautiful and comfortable. The ambiance is excellent! The restaurant's food is absolutely delicious! George and Matt run an immaculate inn with impeccable attention to detail. Their service to their guests is top notch! 10/10 a highly recommend..

Nice and classy place with good food and ambiance. Their crab cake is the best. We like their lobster Linguini as well. We also ordered white bean dip, eggs and salad and oysters.

Don't expect the restaurant to execute the promise of their menu. VERY slow & careless service. It took over 30 minutes to be served raw oysters with mignonette and and an order of veggie polenta. The entrees took a LONG time too. The "lobster bouillabaisse" was long awaited and then featured 5 PEI mussels that were cleaned & cooked properly, 2 nicely cooked scallops, a chunk of slightly overdone haddock and a VERY overcooked 1/2 lobster tail in a tasty broth. I approached the lobster with my fork & knew it was trouble when it bounded off the crustaceans flesh. I tasted a small bite. Rubbery. I alerted the waitress & after another wait was brought another 1/2 tail. Rubbery. Never mind. I was disappointed that the star of the show was so meager & poorly treated. Honestly the dish succeeded without the lobster. They should not include the lobster and call the dish "Maine Bouillabaisse" to make success simpler. Even better...poach the lobster in champagne butter sauce,separate from the bouillabaisse, and serve it atop the dish as I do at home? I didn't ask for any discount but to their credit, they offered a $10 reduction in the bill followed by removing the $30 charge altogether. We didn't stay for dessert as nearly 2 hours had already elapsed for appetizers & entrees. The decor of the restaurant is comfortable enough. The room we dined in was painted dark coral & white chair rail with paintings and prints of roses on every wall. The pickings are thin in Castine. Be prepared to drop significant time and coin if you dine at the Pentagoet Restaurant.

Tapas portions but wonderfully prepared. Lovely jazz music on Tuesday nights during the summer. I highly recommend this place off the beaten path in Castile, Maine

Where to begin?! At the beginning, of course! Upon arrival, new owners Matt and George greeted us with smiles. Funny thing, they never stopped smiling. More on that later. Matt and George have created a welcoming, warm and cozy environment. Their Inn is reminiscent of a by gone era. Time slows down at the Inn. Read a book, tour the quaint little town, take a leisurely drive to Bar Harbor or play a game of Castineopoly. Windows are open to the crisp clean salt air as they are only a block from the waterfront. Breakfast is presently a pick up and go but don't be fooled by the presentation. The daily breakfast specials are something to wake up for!! Likewise, dinner (seated) is amazing. Our server, Justin, was the proper combo of professional and fun. The food and beverages were 10/10 delicious!!! Note: We were fortunate to score a table on Jazz Night. We were told Tuesday jazz is very popular. It wasn't hard to see why. The music was NYC quality. Make your resies early! Now, back to the smiles, Matt and George truly love their jobs and it shows. They treat their staff and guests with kindness and respect. They aim to please! Whether giving out tour suggestions or sharing their vision moving forward for the inn, the smiles never stop! Can't wait to go back!!!

What a wonderful and beautiful B&B. First time in Castine, Maine and I will definitely be back with family and friends. With this being my first small town visit I was impressed. A+ for location of this Inn. The staff was friendly and so personable. I even met the owners who were so welcoming and happy to have me as guest. They are young and full of energy. I could tell they love what they do. The rooms are gorgeous and are all so different. There are bikes available to take stroll around the town too. My favorite is the pub and the wrap around porch which has live Jazz on Tuesday. Piano night is on Thursday. The food was outstanding. Pork Lollipops and crab cakes are a must. Wedge salad was the best I've ever had especially because it was easy to eat. I enjoy the small plates because they give you a chance to try more food. Cocktails were delicious! Another bonus about the location is it's about a 2 minute walk to the pier which you can rent a boat for yourself, kayak, or take a tour on boat.

This is a wonderfully charming place in the absolutely beautiful mid-coast area of Castine, Maine. The owner, Jack Burke, a former Foreign Service Officer, typically holds court in the bar just off the bar/fine dining area (the restaurant is not just for breakfast, it's a very fine restaurant (and we live in the Washington DC area, where most restaurants are excellent). As you would imagine, Mr Burke has many stories to tell, and most of them are borderline classified! The rooms have gorgeous views of the working harbor, which is about half a block away. We booked the Inn for one night, but were so pleased that we extended another night! Really, the Patagoet Inn is truly a great place to stay. You won't be disappointed! Murray Mack

Review is only of restaurant and wine bar. We did not stay at the inn. The wine list is well curated and fairly priced. I love me some Provence rose. The small plates are made with fresh local ingredients and oh so good. Top it off with and jazz on the porch and you can have yourself the perfect little night. Love this place!

Pub was full so we ate in the dining room. The menu is fairly small but they did offer some specials. I ordered an Old Fashioned from the bar which was quite tasty but in a very small glass. The bouilliabase (sp) was very tasty, the farm salad with goat cheese and beets delicious, and the chocolate molten cake for dessert scrumptious. Our waitress took great care of us. My husband has celiac disease and when the broiled oysters came out of the kitchen with bread crumbs she turned right around and had them make it again. She was attentive without being intrusive. All in all, a lovely and charming place for a special dinner.

They never served us drinks at the pub even though they took our order there before our dinner reservation. The food took FOREVER to come out and was not good (burnt, flavorless, etc). It was loud inside and stuffy like your great aunt's living room.

This may be the only nice restaurant in Castine, ME, but the restaurant is anything but fine. The service was slow to say the least, and the bartender/owner was seemed to be bothered when we rang the bell at the bar to get a drink as we waited for our table. I was ready to leave at this point, but my family decided to stay and see how the rest of the service was. It was a disappointment to say the least. They had lobster on two entrees in their menu, and after we ordered the entree, the waitress returned to let us know they were out of lobster! This would make perfect sense if the restaurant was located in Las Vegas, but in Maine-- 3 blocks from the harbor --seems to be probably the most ridiculous excuse I have ever heard. Then the wait for food was another problem. We waited 1 hour for okish appetizers, and another hour for burnt scallops, and a plate of what was called quinoa, but resembled the bowl of mush you serve to prisoners. The last issue was the noise; it was like sitting next to an engine and trying to talk to the person next to you. I finally gave up and say quietly til I got the bill so I could escape and have peace and quiet once again.The bottom line is, if you have 2-3 hours, love yelling across a table, and don't mind poorly cooked food, then this is the place for you!

What a lovely establishment! Fine dining in scenic Castine gets no better than Pentagoet. The menu is fairly small but diverse for its size, and the food is beyond compare. Portion sizes are appropriate - none of the terribly small and overpriced portions you receive at other fine dining establishments. The atmosphere is quite cozy, but the dining rooms have a nice ambiance. Particularly interesting to me was the decor of the pub area which evades proper description. Food was delicious, the drinks were well-made but I found to be slightly lacking in flavor. They had a distinctive and consistent style to them however, which deserves credit.

The pub in this place is soooo amazing. Sip some scotch and just take in the room. It'll leave you feeling worldly and intrigued.

We did not make a reservation on a Monday evening and were told we could not be seated for dinner for 45 minutes. No offer to serve us cocktails or appetizers at the empty tables on the porch. It was a beautiful evening to sit outside. Not a very warm and friendly hostess. Will not return here.

My second visit to Pentagoet and I couldn't be happier: the place is beautiful, the PUB, amazing, the service, impeccable and the food just delicious. Can't wait to come back next summer!

Crab cakes excellent, truly taste of fresh crab, Russian salad nice, light, lamb chop special was fabulous--about 4-5 lamb chops surrounding a Close Encounters pile of delicious mashed potatoes. Bouillabaisse fine, but nothing special (and lobster rubbery!). Desserts nice--blueberry crumble, chocolate gelato & cherries a nice finish. Ask to sit in the bar, surrounded by an eclectic collection of paintings & photos of heads of state and anyone of interest. You can spend dinner challenging your visual & historical memory. Educational, delicious & fun.

Had dinner in the pub (could have eaten in the main room, but the pub called to us) surrounded by pictures of world leaders collected from the owners own travels. Quite impressive and sets a fantastic mood. I thoroughly enjoyed the bouillabaisses (lead with a locally grown salad with smoked motz!) and my husband had several options to choose from as a vegetarian. The chef is to be toasted!

This was the highlight of our trip to Maine. Delicious clever localvore dinner choices paired with a very nice wine list in a charming atmosphere. We had a really delightful evening there. I look forward to returning in the future.

The Pentagoet Inn Restaurant offers skillfully prepared dishes in a tiny town that the masses don't know about. Thank goodness. We had the Taste of the Pentagoet. Loved each bite. The pre-dinner cocktails on the front porch were delightful as well. Get away from the masses and enjoy one of Maine's full of character and off the beaten path places. Delish!
