The Best US Christmas Markets for Convivial Crafts, Treats, and Decor | Vogue

"Taking vibe cues from traditional German markets, this annual Pittsburgh event transports guests to the Alpine chalets of Europe where they can soak up holiday cheer while perusing hand-blown glass ornaments and nibbling on freshly roasted cinnamon almonds. Also of note: Peoples Gas Holiday Market encourages visitors to make a donation to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank." - Nicole Kliest

European-Style Christmas Markets You Can Visit This Winter

"Dates open: November 27 to December 23 This year, little visitors to the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in Pittsburgh won’t be able to sit with St. Nick in his popular Santa House, but they can chat with him in real-time thanks to a new Santa Zoom: Live From the North Pole experience. When they’re not hobnobbing virtually with Kris Kringle, visitors can listen to live music, sample traditional European foods, browse dozens of decked-out chalets for gifts (including Spanish pottery and wall art made from—what else?—steel), or take a spin on the outdoor ice rink." - Lindsay Lambert Day

Visited on Sun Dec 21, 2025. With the construction at the Market Square, the Bavarian-themed little market with several separate vendor booths was moved to open areas at the Penn & 7th intersection. The day my daughter and I went it was cold and very windy, and we were absolutely frozen. Some respite from wind can be found at the Benedum lot, which features a larger, enclosed canvas tent vendor. There's usually a line to enter though, but it moves quickly as the wares inside are just ornaments and decorations, and no special entertainment. An attendant at the PSO venue told us there was a Christmas village where you could visit the Santas of all the world, but we didn't find that. We went to the PPG Plaza skating rink, walked around the Market Square in all directions, and ended up at the Peoples Gas Holiday Market but did not see anything of the sort.

So fun! If you've ever been to a Christmas Market in Germany or France, this is very reminiscent of those experiences. Lots of authentic handicrafts available from countries all over the world. And don't forget your authentic Glüwein and roasted nuts!

My girlfriend and I had a terrible experience with the Lama vendor who not only profiled us in a discriminating way, he also was extremely rude to my girlfriend and I while attempting to shop at his booth after spending money buying things at several other the booths first. While we were browsing together and had been checking out the stuffed lamas for sale and discussing how cute they were, the booth owner proceeded to aggressively yell in my girlfriends face to not touch anything in his booth(this was the first item she had even touched). As it was clear the vendor did not want our business we left this booth immediately and went down to the food vendors, while completing our snack purchase a security guard came up to us and told us we were being kicked out because the Lama booth owner falsely reported to him that we we’re shopping lifting. After asking the security guard to speak to management the market employee escalated the issue to his manager and apologized for the lama booths unacceptable behavior, however the market still made us leave. Very disappointed in the customer service and discrimination experienced by a judgment lama vendor.

The market is a nice holiday attraction. There are a good variety of vendors with holiday trinkets to buy. The market is very tight and difficult to navigate which makes it claustrophobic and uncomfortable.

I googled this place before going to check the hours... It said nothing about being in a different location this year. It's not the vendors' fault there's construction in Market Square, but it was a hassle finding the new location, getting there, then finding it was broken up into 3 sections, each one requiring me to cross another street to get to it. Just wasn't set up in a way that made sense like it usually is.
