This place is a classic small town, really good restaurant. I knew it was going to be good after being in there for less than 5 minutes. It was all locals, and they all knew each other. When they brought the chips and salsa I knew they weren't playing here at all. Many Mexican restaurants bring a bland salsa - this was zippy and freshly made. The menu was diverse but not so big they couldn't do everything well.
I had the Pepper Pot burrito, which had been featured on the Travel Channel. The waitress sad it was her favorite, so I went with it. It came smothered with red and green sauce, one on one end, one on the other. The pork inside was excellent, and the combination of that and the cheese and sauce made this literally one of the best burritos I've ever eaten, and I've eaten A LOT of burritos. The portion size was extremely generous. My wife had the quesadilla with chicken and it was huge, and also excellent. She got the "Christmas Sauce" on the side, which is a red and a green, and excellent.
The people at the table next to us got a chili bowl and a taco plate. Both were massive, and this little old lady knocked down that taco plate like a sumo wrestler. I told her I was impressed and she told me she never leaves a bite when she eats here. The service was also very good - the waitress we had was awesome. I live about 90 minutes from Hatch, NM, and I would drive that just to have the burrito again! The prices were also VERY reasonable, unlike some of the tourist-trap places.
