Stylishly renovated performance space for non-mainstream art.

One of my professors in my fourth year of college up at Hampshire College (Amherst, MA) that I took a course with at Mt. Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA) that was the Symposium support for my Final Thesis (Division III) Project at Hampshire was an original P.S.122 founder. She was SO COOL! 😎 She invited the cast and crew of my production to come down to NYC and give a workshop performance of our production of Six Degrees of Separation at P.S. 122. This was an INCREDIBLE honor for us since many of my cast and crew had never even been to NYC, much less received an opportunity to perform for a NYC audience. We also did a workshop performance up in Massachusetts at Mt. Holyoke during a class session as well before we opened our run at Hampshire in the Mainstage Theater 🎭 in Emily Dickinson Hall. As a NYC native myself (born & raised in Manhattan & Brooklyn) it was just another feather in my cap, and I ❤️'d going home for a weekend to show off my Directing work, and having my parents and my sister in the audience. I ❤️ telling NYC stories through the lens of Theater, since my origin story is also a NYC story.

I thought it was pretty cool! Surprised there's a space in Times Square I didn't know about, considering I'm a New York lifer. Must be new. It's way down a long escalator, but once inside, surprisingly spacious and well designed.

A cool and accessible performance space. The box office seemed a bit disorganized or our event but the show was wonderful.

We came here specifically for the Precious Okoyomon: FRAGMENTED BODY PERCEPTIONS AS HIGHER VIBRATION FREQUENCIES TO GOD installation. I was worried that they would not allow walk ins since the reservation were all full for the weekend. But luckily we came around 12:30pm on a Saturday and made it! It's a very unique and meaningful exhibition. "Okoyomon creates a new world in the Keith Haring Theatre, a wake for death allowing for catharsis, celebration, and closing: "2020 was the reckoning of death, and we're still living in it. We have to face it and live in it and allow it to change us and be changed by it"". Visitors were invited to sit/stand/lay down as the wet ash falls from the ceiling. The place is filled with moss, gravel, soil, mud, kudzu ash, and wildflowers. This was definitely a memorable visit.

Great space for performances. Three performance spaces and artists' spaces are on the upper floors. The structure used to be a school and was also where _Fame_ was filmed. The outside is covered in neat graffiti. Lots of great shows - a wide variety, too.

Fabulous and magnificent off - off broadway performance space deep in the East Village. This place is so off broadway they sell beer for $3. And you get to drink it during the show. It is a fantastic place to see a performance - and thanks to Kelly Ripa ( yes, that Kelly Ripa ) me and the Honey recently went to see "Silence - the Musical" the unauthorized musical parody of Silence of the Lambs. It was, without question , one of the funniest, most magnificent, most fantabulous shows I have ever seen.

Where do you go if you want to see a play called Up Your Ass? Performed by a 100% female troupe? As a musical? Public Space 122 is a non-profit theater venue that shows mostly experimental theater, avant garde dance and all sorts of performance art pieces, and hosts festivals like the Fringe. Playwrights and troupes can also hone their works in progress before they can take them to bigger stages. If you are ever in the mood for a weirdly fascinating experience, this is the place to go. The prices are very cheap, in the $10 to $20 range. There are two stages, one upstairs and one downstairs. The theater space is small but very well arranged, with seats set up on a sharply sloping platform - even without it, in a place this size you would be able to see everything no matter where you are, but the platform ensures that your experience will be even more comfortable.

P.S. 122 is keeping the torch burning in terms of New York experimental theatre. For example, last night I saw an experimental dance opera about a virtual Japanese children's show host who wants a birthday so badly that Death gives her the gift of Youth/Existence. I was skeptical going in, but I can't even describe how totally awesome it was. The shows here consistently delight and surprise. I saw Holly Hughes work through Clit Notes in several performances in the mid-90's, Kiki & Herb do one of their first Christmas shows in the late 90's, and an Asian-American comedy troupe (the Miyagis) do SIDES in the '00's. They also house Mabou Mines and great art installations as well. The building/facilities are run down, but the work is so great that I can't bring myself to take away a star. Think about this way: keep patronizing the place and maybe they'll be able to afford some renovation.

Need to get their staff in order. I understand they just reopened, but box office is snotty and unhelpful. Stanislavsky said that theater begins at the coat room... maybe Performance Space N.Y. should keep that in mind. Decent facility, but get your act together people.

This is a kind of cool performance space downtown. It's been around since the early 80s so it is safe to say that it is among the few left of its kind from that time. Since its inception there have been bigger, better, nicer, friendlier places that have popped up all over the city. It fits a niche and is worth checking out if there is a show that grabs your attention performing here. If it is General Admission then arrive early to get a good seat. Some are obstructed by pillars or just too far to the side to offer a good stage view.

PS122 Gallery offers space to emerging artists and artists throughout their career. The have two levels, a ground floor that is for group shows and an upper level (Classroom) for solo exhibitions. Every year (between the months of March and May) they are open for submissions; curators, artists and artist groups can submit ideas for exhibitions which are then juried by a rotating panel of artists ad artist professionals. Its not a beautiful space, but it is a strong supporter of the arts and artist. Awhile back I wondered into the gallery to find a friend had just started volunteering, being an artist and without a weekend job I soon started volunteering aswell. Now I can be found working at least on day a weekend, sometime two. As an empployee, PS122 Gallery is a wonderful place to be. While it doesn't pay the bills, i am happy to work here as everyone is passionate about art and votes for the underdog! Plus we get a paid lunch and if you work two days you get paid for one. As an artist and curator, I love the gallery for its oppurtunities. Altough I have yet to submit something, I see the time and care they handle each proposal with. Next year they will no longer require slides, and therefore I'll submitt a proposal and keep my fingers crossed.

Two stages: upstairs and downstairs. There was no intermission for 2 hours so make sure to use the bathroom beforehand. Other than that, the ticket prices are quite affordable. Discounts are available through third-party websites.

I'm a member/supporter of PS122, so I obviously like it. It's hard to pin down any one type of thing you'll see here. But if you want to see quality performance work that pushes boundaries, there's no better place to go. This is a non-profit. The space is low budget, but the quality of the work is high.
