The Pergola Hotel has a lot going for it, nice staff, a good location, and Mellieha is relatively quiet compared to other Maltese resorts. The food we tried was good, and overall we enjoyed our stay. The main drawback with the hotel is maintenance issues. We were there for a week and had two rooms. On the first night our daughters found a cockroach in their bathroom and on closer inspection it was coming through a hole in the wall under the sink. The hotel handled this pretty well, they arranged for the hole to be filled the next day, and checked with us later in the week that the cockroach hadn’t reappeared. ||In our room we found that the balcony railing wasn’t bolted down securely to the floor of the balcony. It was just fixed at both ends and then with loose metal batons along its length, this meant that it swayed alarmingly and didn’t look as though it would hold the weight of an adult (we didn’t test it). Then on our final night the lock to our door stopped working, we could still lock it from the inside with the deadbolt, but couldn’t lock it when we left the room. Reception said that they’d send somebody first thing in the morning to fix it, but nobody had arrived by the time that we checked out. ||Some of the décor is a bit tired, and the sink tap in our studio kitchen was very stiff. But the hotel is friendly, relaxed, the air conditioning worked well and the rooms were a decent size. The maintenance issues certainly didn't spoil our stay, housekeeping were efficient, the hotel seemed clean, and it's a very nice part of Malta. The Pergola could be a great hotel, and despite the issues it's still pretty good value for money. Our travel company had rated it `three stars plus,' on balance that is perhaps a half star too much, a solid three stars seems fair, and better maintenance would make all the difference.
