On the Grid : Cat's Fish and Chips

"There's the craziest vibe on this patio. You would swear you were somewhere on the East Coast of Canada. Their lovely patio has a canopy of grape vine leaves, comfy picnic tables and a solid Fish and Chips menu. Definitely get the calamari. While not exclusively gluten-free, they are fully aware of food intolerances and cater to most." - Eva Bee

it was my first time coming to perkins, i loved the vibe the food and that its 24/7, they have majority of things you might crave at night. hash browns were very good, hollandaise sauce wasn’t the best can’t lie, their soft drinks taste just like mcdos coke, nice and welcoming staff. 2 large eggs 2 sausage links 3 stack pancake hash brown for 15.99 Overall rating: 10/10

The wait time to get seated was very long, but we were 5 people around 11 on a Saturday morning (we brought this on ourselves). I had the Everything Skillet and at first I felt like it needed some sort of sauce (hollandaise, let's say) to keep everything together, but the taste of every piece of vegetables and meat was great as it was. I finally wouldn't change a thing :) Kids absolutely loved their food.

Went Saturday Morning, Served by Charlotte. An excellent place to go for breakfast with family. Our server was incredible. I had their their new Steak and Egg skillet, a bit on the pricier side but still good! Looking forward to coming here again.

My family and I went to Perkins for dinner. Is my first time here, And apparently, this place is known to be very kid friendly. And it was. The service was great. We ordered the meatloaf dinner, the pot roast, and a kids meal. The meatloaf dinner and the pot roast were both on the salty side. Still, nothing that water couldn't help. The Meat Loaf kinda looked like round sausage patties instead of the square Ish meatloaf that I was used to. Either way, it was fine. I got my toddler some silver dollar short stack, which is smaller pancakes. He really liked them. My husband enjoyed the pot roast. Now looking back, I think the value for the food was OK especially nowadays when there is crazy inflation on everything. I thought there could've been a bit more meatloaf, but given that it was 21.5 or something like that for my dinner that included mashed potatoes and another side, I don't think it was that bad. Anyway, after the dinner, we also got some dessert. The kids meal came with a cookie. And we ordered a slice of the peanut butter silk pie. The peanut butter silk pie was like Reese's peanut butter cup on steroids or something. I enjoyed it, but my husband didn't. The chocolate cookie was good too. If anything, it was a bit too much sugar for my 16 month old for dinner so I ended up eating the rest of it. Either way, will probably be back at some point. It was decent.

Google
Great diner food and fast service, but the last time we were there, it was a busy day, with lots of people waiting at the entrance, and the waitress made it obvious that they wanted us to just eat fast and leave, so that someone else can get our table. She wasn't rude, but extremely fast in clearing every finished plate and asking us a million times if we needed anything else.

Wanted to treat my daughter for lunch but we went with breakfast items instead. We had amazing service from the hostess and the server. Great food too!

I had a great dining experience. The setting was warm, the service was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious and well prepared. It was worth every penny, and I will recommend it for anyone looking for a great meal 😋

Just don’t GO!!! I haven’t been in a while but good dame!! Me and my son had the same thing 2 eggs 2 strips of bacon!!!! Who gives 2 strips of bacons?!?! And some flavorless potato Coffee for me and juice for my son. $45.50 !!!!!!! Not even a slice of fruit on the plate!!! This used to be a family restaurant that we would frequent often when we lived near by but what happened???? The greed of the owner is out of hand!!! And the food is so blaah! Never again! The server was great by the way!

Yelp
Very friendly service, staff not engaged with customers were quick with a smile or hello. Portion size was large as you expect with the "American Breakfast" type of place. Our server was excellent and attentive. Food tasted great, only downside was it could have been warmer/hotter. I would have loved some grits! Solid 3+ stars, 4 if the food was hot

Yelp
I've been to Perkins' many times before; but this visit was disappointing. Let me explain why: It turns out that the menu is really not that appealing if you're trying to watch your calorie intake. I had a very hard time choosing a healthy salad as there doesn't seem to be one that does not have breaded and fried proteins, or processed meats (which I generally try to avoid. Except I love certain salamis. Like I said, I try...) I had decided before arriving to order a salad with chicken on it. The only similar option on the menu had breaded and fried chicken. No thanks right now for KFC!! I love it more than it loves me. :-/ This visit, I chose the Turkey Cobb salad. Overall, not that impressive: not one kernel of corn, and although the bacon was real, it seemed the turkey was not - ie: processed. The avocados were perfect, though. Dressing is apparently always served on the side; good thing, as they give too much of it! As for the service, it was ok, nothing special. On the plus side, they did manage to make room for our party of 12 without much trouble. And our food orders all came out at the same time. Otherwise this experience would not garner a 3-star.

Yelp
It wasn't too bad, the service was great, the bacon was the star of the dish, eggs were average, the hash, should of been seared more on the flat top and they should of added onions to it. I loved the fact they leave you a coffee pot on the table for you.

Yelp
I had lunch here with some girlfriends today and overall it was pretty good. So Perkins is an American chain. It's reminiscent of Denny's to me. Portions are huge, which I appreciate, and prices are reasonable, which I also appreciate. Service is also very friendly and competent. I got the Cobb Salad ($15.49). Overall, it was good, but my big disappointment was that the turkey was deli meat :( On the menu it said "Butterball roasted turkey" so I was thinking like the Butterball turkey I have at Thanksgiving, but I was so sad that it was deli meat turkey! However, other than that, the salad was great. It had real mixed greens, not just romaine and iceberg, like at some places, in fact, it had no iceberg lettuce, hurray! It also had red cabbage, carrots, avocado, tomatoes, feta cheese, bacon, and a boiled egg. The avocado was fresh and green :) All the vegetables were in fact fresh. I got the white balsamic dressing on the side and it arrived as requested. Boy do they give you a lot of dressing. I used maybe a tenth of it. It was flavourful and I liked it, but I like my salad on the dry side. I considered getting one of their huge cookies (only $1.59) for dessert, but I was stuffed silly after my salad. This is not gourmet food, it's casual chain restaurant dining. For what it is, it is great. They serve breakfast all day, and the menu has variety, although you won't find anything too exotic or adventurous. It's very popular with the over 60 crowd for some reason. I felt very young there, haha. My last time at Perkins prior to today was in 2010, as I'm not usually a fan of chain restaurants, but one of my technologically-challenged friends took me there for lunch to thank me for helping her set up an online dating profile. Believe me, it is a sad state of affairs when I am considered the Tech Support (RAM - yeah that's a male sheep, but why are you yelling it at me? Lol). Anyway, she met her current husband through that dating site, so this is a feel good story all around. So 8 years later, we finally found ourselves back there, haha. If you're looking for good ol' American food with good ol' American portions, Perkins is the place ;)

Yelp
The food was good, service was good, however I was kind of tricked price wise. I read the menu under grilled platters, and found the French toast platter listed for $12.49. Great price!! Ordered it and enjoyed my meal. A little bland for the eggs but whatever. Went to pay and it was suddenly $16.89. Confused, I asked for clarification. The cashier kind of rolled his eyes and went for the manager. The manager said that $12 was the "à la carte" Price, with no platter. That was not explained, nor was it listed. I was disappointed as it was not made clear, and I did say "I'll have the French toast platter for $12.49". Unfortunate as it's a family business.

Yelp
I love a good diner, and Perkins definitely delivers on that. Came here for breakfast with a friend. We were greeted and seated promptly. Ordered the french toast which was good and the portions were pretty large, I could not finish it all. Love how they keep the coffee on the table, that way you are free to refill your coffee up at your convenience. Service as quick, which is good if you do not have a lot of time to spare. Pay at the cash, which I don't mind at all, (plus its a great way to look at the bakery treats display). I am a new fan, and will be back!

Yelp
Skillet was oily and cold. Eggs akin to boiling plastic. Staff patronized me after I complained about food quality. Building exterior looks dreadful. Overpriced. Go to broadways instead, or just don't eat.

Yelp
I normally love these old fashioned American diners like the now extinct Marie Callenders and Carrows but I can't say I was impressed with this one. First off, my tea tasted nasty. It was the hot or should I say lukewarm water that tasted really funky. That just says poor quality control or 'I just don't care', because I find it hard to believe that they're unaware of such foul tasting water. Lunch was a hamburger. It looked good but it was made with one of those cheap frozen patties and their fries are not worth the calories. My husband had a breakfast dish. The minuscule portion of bacon was paper thin (see pic) and the waffles cold. Our waiter couldn't have been any nicer or more efficient.

Yelp
This is a popular alternative from your breakfast restaurant like Chez Cora's. Your typical meat and potatoes style food. This offers pancakes, (French) toasts, bacon, ham, eggs, etc...not a lot of fruits, healthy choices or vegan/gluten options. This extends too to their decor, not modern or fancy. Service is always attentive. Always packed each weekend morning at this St. Laurent location in Ottawa. They roll here. Good bang for your buck. Great for families! $$

Yelp
It's a little like going home for dinner. This establishment doesn't try to be anything other than it is. When that's all you want then I'm glad that this place is still around. While the atmosphere is casual and diner-y, the food is pretty homegrown. Stuff you might find your Mom or Grandmother serving. Simple plain food. I like coming here for reasonable prices, edible food and the fact they will put a POT OF COFFEE on the table when you stumble in for breakfast. Which they serve all day!

Derek G.

Yelp
Dirty bathrooms, not maintained. Table was sticky and the breakfast food was dry and very basic. Regular pricing did not match the experience. Staff were nice

Yelp
Arrived at Perkins just before closing time (usually the restaurant is open 24/7 however things are different during COVID) in search of dessert. The guy who served us our coconut cream and apple caramel pies was awesome, and so were the pies. The coconut cream pie was almost like ice cream cake which I'm a fan of. The caramel apple pie was good but not as good as the coconut cream according to my parents who tried both pies, which I think may have been their way of nudging me to not try any of their caramel apple. Whatever, I'm more than happy with just this coconut cream pie. My family and I took our dessert home. Although Perkins is mostly known for its all-day breakfast food, they definitely hold up as a bakery.

Yelp
I used to order once or twice a week from Perkins using either the Uber Eats or Doordash app. Their turkey club sandwich and breakfast meals were delicious. Now they no longer care about their customers because this franchised location stopped delivery options. Terrible customer service. I used to give them 4 out of 5 but now forced to give them 1 out of 5 because they no longer care about the working customers who cannot leave their offices to get their takeout. Perkins main website say delivery option but not for their only restaurant in Ottawa. Terrible decision. They lost a regular customer because of this terrible decision by the management of this franchise location.

Yelp
Great little restaurant and bakery. Loved that I was able to pick a muffin instead of toast or pancakes as a side. Very easy to doggy bag home, the meal was great and filling so I ended up taking advantage of that easy to go side!

Yelp
My mother and I came here for breakfast on Monday morning around 10:30am. I hadn't been to Perkins in a long time so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was fairly quiet but I can only assume it was because of the snow, since this place always seems busy. Our waiter seemed a bit absent minded and forgot to bring milk for my coffee after I asked. And our plates were supposed to come with fruits, but we didn't get them, until we asked. We got our drinks and food fairly quickly. I had the Lemon pie blueberry pancakes platter. I knew right away that's what I wanted when I read it off the menu. Blueberry pancakes are my favorite and who doesn't like lemon pie filling? Even more so squished in between my favorite pancakes! It was great! The pancakes were soft and there were plenty of blueberries in the batter. The lemon pie filling was super tasty and paired well with the pancakes. It came with bacon and eggs, which were ordinary, nothing special about that. The pancakes with lemon pie filling were the real highlight of the plate! I would order it again and recommend it. Delicious!!

Yelp
Fantastic place.. Love their milk shake.. And the vast of all they are open 24 hours a day...
google avatar

Brenna M.

Yelp
Huge fan! Love that they're open 24hrs. Breakfast is great. Would be nice if they delivered, but sometimes it's good for us to leave the house ;) Bakery is great. Can get quite busy during peak times, I usually order takeout.

Yelp
We may have come on a bad day as it was Easter Monday and very busy. We waited 15 minutes and were finally seated. Because of this I won't include wait times in the reason for my rating. The options on the menu look incredible, however for breakfast it is very overpriced and for some reason a substitute for toast is 3 buttermilk pancakes. Surely this has to be why a little breakfast is so expensive? Two breakfasts with 2 small eggs, toast and hash browns was $17. For that price I expect bacon as well.. there was no meat! The portions were not very big, for sure not worth $8 each. After my eggs came out with a thick black hair on one of them, there was no discount given, no extra side or anything given for the inconvenience of having to wait for an extra 10 minutes for my new plate. The waitress was nice enough but wasn't very sympathetic about me having to start eating my breakfast when my boyfriend was finishing his.

Yelp
Aweful turkey cobb salad. Served with cold cuts for a whopping $15,99. Once I explained I couldn't eat cold cuts (make me ill) they asked if I'd rather chicken so I said yes but when the bill came they charged me $5 extra. I had it taken off but if there's an extra cost it should be said. Bottom line though, not a good salad. Very basic.

Yelp
Made a stop here with a few people while in Ottawa and it was pretty good. Once we walked in there was a lineup but it moved fast and we got seated quickly. There was a few things I want to get off the menu but ended up getting the wrappin' granny with tater tots and a cheese sauce. Inside of the wrap is two scrambled eggs, diced ham, tater tots, onions, green peppers and cheese. It was a good choice and more filling than it looked. Have to come back here once I'm in Ottawa again to try other things from the menu and one of their pies they have from their bakery.

Yelp
Since this place is so far every chance I get to come reminds me of why I love this place so much! Love the food and choices I've never been disappointed at this location.

Yelp
One time I was looking for something to eat late at night after work and I didn't know their menu is only about breakfast. I always see this restaurant near St. Laurent mall but never got the chance to come in since I've Always passed by it. I order something to bring with me to eat on the way home but when I check my food, I was surprised how small the portion of the food is. There is was just one egg, harsh brown in stripes and potatoes with small ketchup packages. By the time I got home, I wasn't even that full from what I paid almost around $10 with taxes and I feel like the food wasn't worth my money. The whole time while I was on my way to go home, I was thinking to myself "well that's around $10 I spend on nothing this week." After that experience, I don't feel like coming back again since now I don't know if I should spend another $10 on them.

Yelp
Great service ! Very attentive friendly staff. Not a place I usually go for dinner but that's going to change. Was impressed. Easy, hot diner food and comfortable booths.

Yelp
This restaurant has been a saviour many time after coming back from late night events like concerts and partys. It's one of those landmarks that it's always there for you if you need it :) Feel like having a Thanksgiving turkey dinner in July? Do you want to experience a fluffy and yummy pancake breakfast at 11PM or 3AM? No problem! Perkins is a good fix, average restaurant. Nothing is particularly spectacular, however it's an overall very pleasant experience and have some really good food items.

Myriam B.

Yelp
Great service! It was fully loaded, as we sit to wait for a table they moved use to our table. We ordered not even 20 minutes later the food was in front of us! Plates have big portion, we both loved the food! They only negative comment would be the look of the restaurant, looks old and in need of a make over! After a 12h shift nobody complain, belly full ready to go to bed!
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
We were a party of 15 or so who dropped in unexpectedly on Tuesday afternoon after a family burial. They were extremely accommodating in putting tables together so we could all sit together, despite having two large groups already booked on advance. The food was quick and delicious, and the service friendly. Loved the cool electronic clock hanging on the wall. You have to see it to believe it. :)

Yelp
I love breakfast and brunch places and I'm on an unspoken mission to eat at every single one I find so while I was in Ottawa this past weekend we decided to come here for a Saturday brunch...and I am so glad we did. Can I just rave about their french toast? Their brioche bread french toast is too good. It alone deserves a star! I got the scrambled eggs and they were a bit too dry so I wasn't much of a fan, but their tots were also extremely good. My brother-in-law ordered the Garden of Eaten and he said it was amazing). My sister had pancakes and Eggs Benedict she also said they were very good (and she has tried eggs bennie at every restaurant there is...so that's saying something!). The restaurant was clean, we were seated within minutes which is amazing for a Saturday morning. The servers were fast, friendly informative and helpful...just how I like them! The decor could use a bit of updating...although it was opened in 2008 the style is somewhat outdated. Overall, DEFINITELY recommend, definitely would come back, wish there was one in Toronto!

Yelp
The last time I ate here I vowed never to return! How can you mess up a platter with chicken fingers, fried pickles (eww) and mozzarella sticks? I don't know, but they did. The cookies are amazing if you can get them fresh. Their busiest time is when the clubs let out as drunk people are not as particular.

Don N.

Yelp
This has got to be the slowest service in town Been there twice same results Very slow service and no attitude Food was not all that great either Would not recommend it

Michael D.

Yelp
Service and food great, however the customer service representative was nothing short of a botch. Rude, abrupt, untrained, in need of some training in customer service. Basically shit on our group for having a breakfast meeting in the back room and said we don't take reservations but she had a group coming in and we had to leave. Wont be back. She was very short VERY STOCKY with short hair. She would be better suited to dishwashing where she has no customer contact. To set the record straight Ms Customer Service our group requested the back room for a breakfast meeting. If your employees who takes the call gave us false expectations deal with them not the customers who pay your salary.

Hilliard F.

Yelp
Bought the NEW STEAK & PEPPERS dish (15.99) with the Loaded Baked Potato Soup (+ 1.99). Soup: 4 Stars (was really good I recommend it), STEAK & PEPPERS: 1-2 stars the steak was cooked on the out side but raw on the inside + the potatoes were dry, atmosphere at the restaurant: 2-3 and The service: 3 stars. Over all I give it 2 stars.

Yelp
Late night breakfasts at Perkins are always a hit, server even gave us 50% off for taking so long although it was full house
google avatar

Helen E.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to eating at Perkins. The idea of enjoying some "great" southern classics was playing in mind the whole way to the restaurant. Wow, that is not what I experienced and I was massively disappointed. The menu felt like it was constructed on name brands and frozen foods. I am more of a constructed from scratch type of girl. With fresh ingredients and robust flavours, and that was not the case. If you are looking for fast friendly service this is your place. If you are looking for flavorful food check out another joint. This rating by no way reflects the service. I felt our waitress was amazing, however I can't get past the food. Hence the rating.

Faloola F.

Yelp
Perkins is located a short hop and skip away from St-Laurent Mall. Lots of parking and easy to find. The restaurant is family style. Sort of like Denny's but in my opinion a notch above. The place is always busy with people so obviously lots of regulars and return customers, always a good sign. I went with a party of 5 people for breakfast. We were seated quickly despite the fact the restaurant was busy. Service was courteous. Lots on the menu. I selected a typical breakfast, 2 eggs, 3 pancakes and hash browns. It was good and reasonably priced at 6 bucks. Non stop coffee for 2.69. All in all not a bad deal for breakfast. I would recommend to a friend.

Yelp
Had breakfast at Perkins St Laurent location and the food was just OK! Told our waitress about my allergies and her answer was ... very busy not sure if we can accommodate you!! They when the food came, my eggs weren't the way I had asked! Told the waitress and she had an attitude about it and said again, were busy! My husband had willted lettuce for a garnish and was brown on the edges and was hidden by the tomatoes ... Yuk! The service needs improvement and better quality control in the kitchen!! The manger was very sorry but still happened! Have had better!

Kevin P.

Yelp
Great Breakfast with ok Coffee Great Salads Buffalo Chicken sandwich is good without their blue cheese. I do like blue cheese but I didn't like it here. I go here every month or two People are huge fans of the all day breakfast Thank You

Yelp
Went for a late breakfast around noon on a Sunday wait was not too long food was good eggs bacon well done my wife.s omelet was good but a little salty would recommend

Yelp
This place is freaking awesome !! But wait ?? I have never eaten here sober. I mean when I'm right hammed rocks taste pretty good. Going by my drunken stupor late night stops this place is the tops ! All night baby !!

Yelp
ThIs is another staple place for me. WHen I can't think of another breakfast/lunch place in the east end of town, I normally come here. I was here the other day with a friend for brunch, and this place has not really changed. The food quality was good , the portions are huge, the prices are, I believe, to be great value. However, the only thing I didn't quite like was the service. Our server was a bit absent minded. Other than her absent mindness, everything else was good.
google avatar

Razan B.

Yelp
Good breakfast. Had the build your own omlette and it was good. Service wad nice and food was pretty fast. Not too expensive, 2 plates for $24

Ferdy K.

Yelp
It was a decent experience to visit this place for breakfast. We had omelettes and they were as good as they should be, some british tea along with it. Only problem was long waiting line. I know it was sunday and brunch time but half an hour was a little too much for my hungry-self. I will visit this place again. I will just make sure that it is not sunday and not brunch time.
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
I worked here, and the only thing that was really the best was the food. I never had problems as a customer, but as an employee there was a laundry list of problems, like having a total asshole as a kitchen manager, co-workers talked shit behind people's backs, and working so many hours that this place wears you out.

R H.

Yelp
Cozy nice "Family" restaurent! Sort of like Denny's, the menu has a wide variety and quite filling! I ordered the "tremendous twelve" and it over filled me (which was awesome!) The waitress was friendly (forgot her name but remembered she's been "serving since 2004). Did not visit the washroom so no review available on that! :/ Wait time was very reasonable for both seating and food delivery!
google avatar

Gord M.

Yelp
First class. A bit of a longer wait to be seated than I like, but no longer than they said it would be and that's fine with me. I love the fact that you get your own pot of coffee. I had Eggs Benedict and they were outstanding. The waitress was friendly and efficient. As always with Perkins and breakfast, very, very good. Highly recommended.

Eric O.

Yelp
Nice poeple they like to have a conversation if you want one, wide spread of food and drinks,I've never a bad day when I'm there my favorite food is ham and cheese omelette and big country Smasher. Their hot chocolate and french vanilla coffee are awesome and amazingly it's the only place I could find in all of Ottawa with Cherry Coke they deserve this five-star in fact they deserve another restaurant location because having one in Ottawa is not enough

Ryan C.

Yelp
This is by far my favourite breakfast location! And plus its open 24/7, although I've never taken advantage of this yet. I always go there for the same thing as I am always satisfied with my meal! I get a bacon and cheese omelette with home fries and (3) pancakes. It is so reasonably priced too, I get all that for under $15. And its all amazing :) I will be visiting you again soon :) Cant wait!

Suzie J.

Yelp
Finally tried Perkins and it is ok. The food was alright - I had the bacon omelette and there was one piece of bacon in the whole omelet! What really annoyed me though was the fact that coffee was "extra"! The prices are not low so you should be able to at least get a cup of coffee with your breakfast!

Nicole E.

Yelp
Pretty good. Loved the display for desserts. Nothing fancy but way better then dennys

Virginia D.

Yelp
I went to perkins with a girlfriend for lunch after class one afternoon, i ordered a ceasar chicken wrap, how could you possibly go wrong? when the food arrived the basket it was sitting in was greasy but i decided to ignore, and i took a bite of my wrap, as i was looking into the wrap i saw a piece of hair, and i'm not sure who's hair this was but it did not look like hair from your head it looked like pubic hair ... i almost pucked on the spot, i asked the server to come by and when i told him he didn't seem surprised and got the manager, she told me i didn't have to pay for meal ... DUHH!? and then she offered me a replacement meal? why would i want to eat anything after that ... it was honestly the most disgusting thing i have ever experienced at a restaurant, way to go chef's!
