I really enjoyed visiting the Perlan Museum — it was such a fun and immersive experience. The museum has a variety of interactive screens and exhibits that make learning about Iceland’s nature exciting. You can explore different floors, each telling a unique story about the land, glaciers, wildlife, and natural phenomena. The way they use technology to bring animals and plants to life for example, with lenses or screens that reveal detailed information is especially great for kids and families. It made the visit both educational and entertaining, and we had a lot of fun exploring it together.
Perlan is built on top of a group of huge hot-water storage tanks that were originally part of Reykjavík’s geothermal system, and a striking glass dome sits above them so yes, the building has a fascinating architectural history tied to its original function as water tanks.
One of the highlights was the man-made ice cave. It felt wonderfully cold nearly as chilly as a real glacier and reminded me of the time I visited a real glacier. The cave experience was so photogenic, I took even more photos there. Inside, it can get around −15 °C, so be prepared for the cold!
The layout is thoughtful and spacious, with enough room for a few people to walk together comfortably, and the interactive nature of the exhibits keeps you engaged throughout the visit. All in all, it was a great stop — educational, beautifully designed, and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
👍🏼👍🏼Because I had already seen the real glaciers and natural landscapes, the experience felt familiar to me. However, I can honestly say that if someone is not able to visit a real glacier or explore Iceland extensively, the museum offers a very similar experience. The man-made ice cave, in particular, feels impressively realistic. Of course, it’s missing the vast snowy landscape outside, but inside, the details are very well done and immersive.💛💛
For me, it was a pleasant and well-designed experience. But for someone who doesn’t have the opportunity to explore the glaciers or travel around Iceland, Perlan would be an excellent alternative and a truly worthwhile place to visit.
