I had a great experience at 178 Perth Backpackers during my first month in Australia. The atmosphere is very welcoming, with a group of friendly people who make you feel at home. The owners are thoughtful and always ready to help and time to time they give us a nice dinner . The facilities are comfortable, with air conditioning and games to enjoy. There's always space to cook and shower, which makes the stay even more pleasant. It's definitely a great place to meet people and have a relaxed and comfortable stay.

Been to Perth when all the hostel where fully booked and they all put there price higher than usual. Stay in this hostel for around a month. I payed 35$ per night wich was too much for the service and cleanliness (mention above that nearly all backpackers/hostel where fully booked even hotel where nearly all fully booked), the owner come clean the shower once a week or even less some times. With that many people staying and with this price, they should hire someone to come every day/every 2 days to clean bathroom. The room is ok, and you got ac, but no locker and you can't even lock the room. The kitchen is good and quite clean. The pros of this hostel is that the location is perfect, and the people staying long term and short term are really kind and friendly. (If someone makes way too much noise he get kicked out by the owner). To book you have to call.

A very dirty hostel and with an unpleasant, lying manager who doesn't care about his customers. Toilet paper is not provided, restriction on sheets, blanket never washed, the owner does a very quick vacuuming on sunday morning without knocking and doesn't care if you're asleep or not. Cockroaches in the hostel, padlocked air. The worst hostel in Australia ! Run away !

The store downstairs lie about their pricing. They list $3.20 on the shelf but try charge nearly $5 for the product. Be careful.

I never usually write reviews but I had to after staying in this hostel. First impressions were okay. The Chinese lady on reception, which is also a shop, was very nice and welcoming but then it went very down hill.||||The room we were allocated stunk, probably because of the bedding. We were given pillows completely stained yellow with bodily fluids, dirty sheets and stained blankets.||||The metal bunk beds all creak with the slightest movement, there's a nightclub next door blasting music and a skylight in the room that wakes you up at sunrise. Don't expect a good nights sleep!||||The hostel has a no alcohol policy which was terrible for us, we are travelling so can't afford to just go and drink in the bars all night without having some drinks first. this is not allowed here, we went in the shop and saw the one for the first time. All he said was I smell alcohol on you (we hadn't had a drink) and then came to the room two minutes later to check.||||The owner is very rude, never says hello, frowns as if he doesn't want you there. We were relaxed one night, watching the television and having a cigarette outside. We had had no drinks and ere being very quiet. He turned all the lights out and the television off in the middle of a programme we were interested in. He is power crazy and loves to control people. How he has any paying guests at all that want to stay I will never know.||||When we were there there were mainly long stayers and chinse people. Everyone was friendly enough but often older and Asleep very early ready for work the next day. Often after 11pm most people are asleep. Certainly not a party hostel or for young people.||||The hostel set up itself is quite good with a few rooms and a decent sized kitchen and living room with TV (when the manager allows you to watch it). With decent management and a decent cleaner it has potential to be a very good hostel.||||There are plenty of hostels out there, do not waste your time or money coming here:

This hostel was very basic, good for a couple nights. Fairly clean shower/toilet facilities. In general, the hostel seemed a little bit run down, but fine. Not much of an atmosphere but only a short walk to Perth city centre. Fairly cheap prices, but again, you’d only want to stay for a couple nights.

Having booked a private room for two nights before reading the previous reviews, we became a bit worried that we were heading to a hell hole... However the staff at the little shop in front and the other people staying here were friendly and pleasant. The kitchen, bathrooms, showers and toilets were quite tidy. The kitchen has plenty of kitchen utensils and cooking facilities. The manager who we met once, was friendly and turned the air con on for us.|Another good thing is the location, there are plenty of restaurants and food courts on James Street and the free city Blue Cat bus has a stop right outside the backpackers.||Only one thing that may frustrate working people, during the weekend the night club/strip club that is next door operates into the early morning with loud bass music.
