On the Grid : Perth City Farm

"Men of the Trees are glitter-dipped miracle-makers. They took an old scrapmetal yard and battery-recycling plant by a busy railway line and turned it into a haven to nourish body and soul. Smack dab in the heart of the city. Through the farm and nursery, people from diverse backgrounds learn permaculture and organic gardening practices. Fresh produce moves seamlessly from farm to table via weekly farmers markets and the City Farm Café. There is live music and events and forums and fairs and workshops and all kinds of community-enhancing wonderfulness. Old Macdonald would be envious." - Studio Bomba

What a find, yesterday arvo my lady and I met our friends at City Farm to discover an array of small businesses whose Owner's are dedicated to their respective products which are delivered fresh and in some cases organic to delight and entice the public to buy. It was an impressive and delightful scene and the many products ranging from fresh veges, fruit, drinks, mushrooms, cheeses, meats, soaps, olive oils, brewed drinks, seafood, etc also two yummy food-filled cafe's waiting to greet, meet, and entice you. And don't forget the Choir singing to delight! We loved it and came away with a bag full of goodies thank you Perth City Farm, see you soon 👍👍

We hired the Barn, Kitchen and Courtyard for our wedding and we could not have been happier. It had the relaxed urban garden vibe we were going for, and each of the spaces was perfect for our needs. The ceremony in the garden, and then we pulled back the huge barn door to reveal the party space. The kitchen area is perfectly set up to support catering vendors and the barn was an excellent canvas for us to make our own. It looks so good with lighting and a dance floor. The staff were excellent, even when Covid got in the way and moved our original dates. Would hire again. Thanks for all your help Perth City Farm!

This place is a great spot to visit. The fresh produce was delicious and the prices were great. The cafe was amazing and delicious too. I highly recommend checking it out, just be sure to bring your own grocery bags.

Visited this little greenery oasis for a winter wedding & it was a calm & gorgeous venue right in the heart of Perth CBD. The entry is literally next to the Yellow CAT Bus stop for Claisebrook Station, very convenient to get to. There were two venues for wedding, & the one we were at was the barn shed, a spacious indoor area right next to the admin office. The lovely staff was helpful with on-site parking for the wedding, and also provided two big speakers for music playing, excluding the microphone. We like the idea of the on-site cafe offering drinks & snacks too. Overall a pleasant visit without the crowd, but we can imagine this being very busy during market days.

What a gem buried in Perth metropolitan. There's probably more produce sold here than the Margaret River Farmers Market. The prices are more than reasonable. I got a couple of jars of really good honey for $4 a pop. Location is great as well, next to the yellow CAT stand, parking all around and train station a walk away. The cafe is bustling as well, as there is a chess club every Saturday. I'd hope to come by one of these weekends to be walloped by kids whose ages haven't reached double digits yet. And I'd sure to buy more produce next time. Edit: Actually checked out the farm in the back, which was easy to miss the first you visit. This is truly an oasis in the middle of the pandemonium. I also appreciated that there are other cultures promoted, as there was an Indonesian art fair and fashion show when I came there the second time around.

Hard to believe this lush urban farm was just another polluted, inner-city industrial site only 30 years ago. Fabulous staff & volunteers have created a beautiful oasis of peace and green. No wonder it gets used as a wedding venue now. There's so much to see & do from the weekly farmer's market, cafe, a cool venue for hire, classes (all sorts), recycling, productive food garden & so much more. Definitely worth checking out what's coming up in the events calendar (link via QR code in photos).

Yelp
Every Saturday morning you will find me at my happy place - a local farmers' market! Perth City Farm Market is small but mighty with three organic vegetable growers, two fruit stands, a local bakery, unrefined honey provider, small pantry goods shop and a free-range egg stall. Plus a rolling schedule of other local treats - today it was a crystals lady, a spray free mango grower and an organic gardening supplies stall. Sometimes there is even live music which makes for a toe-tapping stroll around the markets. I like it here because the produce is focused on local, biodynamic and organic growers and for the utmost quality food it is cheap in comparison to the supermarkets by a mile. I love having a chat to the farmers about what's in season, their cooking suggestions and what's growing for the future. There's no food trucks or stalls but you can have breakfast at the beautiful Perth City Farm Cafe overlooking the gardens, where the focus here is ethical, local and delicious! Smashed avocado on toast, fresh juices and the coconut and almond gluten free cake are particular favourites! Also good for a weekend caffeine hit, bonus points for offering coconut and almond dairy free milk. All the proceeds from the City Farm stand go back into the volunteer run gardens out the back, and there's a really nourishing community vibe here so give it a try and get your vegetables here one week!
