Peru Taypa

I recently visited the Peruvian restaurant **Perú Taypa**, and while the food was flavorful and fresh, the overall experience was marred by poor service, which made my visit less enjoyable. We ordered **arroz chaufa de pollo**, **tallarines verdes with steak**, and a **jalea de pescado and seafood**. As far as the food goes, I have no complaints – everything was well-prepared and tasted authentic. However, the **jalea de pescado and seafood** was disappointing. There was no fish in the dish, just **calamari**, which made it feel like it lacked the variety of seafood one would expect in such a dish. The biggest negative was the **customer service**. The waiter only approached us to take our order, bring the food, and hand us the check. In other words, we saw him three times throughout the entire meal. The lack of effort to provide good service was clear. In places like this, one expects a more attentive and engaging experience, especially with such delicious traditional food. But the service was lacking. We started to think that the **poor service** might be due to the fact that they automatically add a **15% tip**, which seems to reduce their motivation to go the extra mile in providing a pleasant experience. They don’t realize that this hurts the restaurant’s image, and it becomes an important factor when deciding whether or not to return. To make matters worse, **if you pay with a card, there's a 4% surcharge**, which is an inconvenient detail not mentioned upfront. This, without a doubt, added to the feeling that the restaurant isn't focused on providing a complete and enjoyable experience for its customers. In summary, the food was good, but the terrible service and additional charges for paying with a card make me hesitant to return. There's a lot of potential in this place, but the service experience needs significant improvement.

The good: The environment was nice and comfortable. The cocktails were very good. My wife ordered green pasta and it was good. The appetizer was delicious. The bad: My wife's pasta was too small for the price. My beef arroz chaufa wasn't so tasty and the meet was tough. The appetizer came last when it's supposed to come first and in addition I mentioned to the waiter that I wanted it first. My wife's dish came with beef instead of chicken when we said the word pechuga to the waiter and he repeated it. In general a waiter should be always making eye contact with his customers in case they need to call him. We needed him to come for more hot sauce and to request the check but he kept passing and not giving the chance to call him. He did approached a couple times to ask if everything was OK though but sometimes those times is when customers are just fine.

We were looking for a Perubian restaurant, and I found this restaurant on Google that looked very cozy. We decided to visit it, We ordered chicha morada, which was very good. We didn't order an appetizer, but we decided to order jalea and chaufa rice. The rice was very good, I like to be honest, but the jalea unfortunately was too salty. The waitress never came around to ask if everything was alright; quite a bit of time passed, and we had already finished the chaufa rice. When the waitress finally came over, I told her to let the appropriate person know that the jalea was too salty. She came back and asked if we wanted another dish. It had been a long time, and I hoped they wouldn't charge us for that dish, but they didn't. They only gave us a small consolation dessert. We don't like to make a fuss, but I always tell the truth in my reviews.

We heard about this restaurant and we are so glad we went. The food was absolutely delicious. We arrived at the height of the Saturday brunch crowd but were able to be seated in less than 10 minutes. Considering that it was so busy it was understandable that it took longer than usual for a server to come over to take our order. But the food more than made up for it. It was extremely fresh, tasty and very well seasoned. We already made reservations to celebrate my dad’a birthday here. I know he's going to love it too.

I attended this restaurant with my family on Wednesday to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday. First, parking is terrible; I had to drive around to locate a spot (which is common in Newark). The establishment is small and charming, with live music. We ordered drinks and waited at least 20 minutes for 5 cocktail drinks; beer arrived faster. Then we ordered 8 dishes: 2 chaufas, 2 arroz con mariscos, 2 tallarines verdes, 2 lomos carne, 1 jalea, and 1 tallarin saltado (which was changed 30 minutes later for a pescado frito because they ran out of spaguetti). The majority of the dishes took a long time to arrive, but the pescado frito took more than 50 minutes (for which they did not charge). The beverages were good, and our server was pleasant and constantly apologized for the late service. The food was acceptable, with generous servings that don't justify the food quality or serving time.

This restaurant was a huge disappointment. The service was terrible. We were made to wait an hour and a half with no explanation, and on top of that, the waitresses were extremely rude. What bothered me the most was the complete lack of honesty. I called the day before to make a reservation and was told they do NOT take reservations. But when we arrived, they let other people go in before us, claiming they did have a reservation. How is that even possible? When I asked for an explanation, the waitress responded with a bad attitude and absolutely no professionalism. The environment was uncomfortable from the start, and the customer service was awful. I do not recommend this place at all. It was a frustrating and very unpleasant experience.

The food at this Peruvian restaurant was good and above average compared to other Peruvian spots in New Jersey. I ordered the ceviche carretillero. The flavor was good, but I was expecting a slightly larger portion. Unfortunately, the leche de tigre was overly salty, which affected the overall experience. My wife ordered the tallarines a la huancaína con bistec. The portion was very generous, and she enjoyed the dish since we had tried it during our trip to Peru. However, she mentioned that the huancaína sauce was a bit watery, and the steak was overcooked. Regarding the service, there is definitely room for improvement. My wife entered the restaurant first while I was looking for street parking. When I entered shortly after, I was not greeted, and none of the staff seemed to notice me, although they did greet customers who arrived after me—so this may have been an isolated incident. We also had to call the waitress to place our order because it took quite a while for her to come over. While interaction with customers could improve, she did correctly repeat our order, which we appreciated. The food arrived one dish at a time instead of together, which seems to be common in Peruvian restaurants but is still not ideal. The gratuity was already included in the bill, but this was not mentioned beforehand, which would have helped us plan accordingly. I did not order alcohol, but I noticed that it is available. After our food was served, we noticed staff picking food from a plate at the bar, which made us wonder if it was a customer’s plate. Additionally, our waitress was eating in the dining area next to us, which felt unprofessional. On a positive note, the ambiance was great. The décor was well done, the music was on point, and the restaurant had good vibes overall. The front dining area was cold, while the back was warm and cozy. However, the restroom was poorly maintained, with a broken paper towel holder and a soda dispenser pulled from the wall. Overall, while the food and atmosphere had some highlights, the service and professionalism issues stood out. We probably would not return to this restaurant.

It's all good in the restaurant. The only reason why I didn't it 5 Stars is because of the parking. It's all street parking no lot. It's very hard to find a parking being that it's in a residential area. There's no wheelchair entrance that I can remember. The restaurant is very nice and clean. The employee's are very helpful, and the rest rooms are clean as well. The food has a great taste and the green hot sauce is fantastic. I hope this helps you decide.

I have been meaning to come eat here. We only ordered appetizers. The ceviche was good. The Causa de Pollo was soft and fresh. The best in the area. Our food came out fairly quickly. I need to return to taste other items. Many plates passed by and they looked inviting. The space is small so call to check if they have a long wait. Parking is very difficult in this area of Newark. There is a sign outside that says Valet Parking but I never saw anyone there to take my car.

Came to this place with my sister for dinner on a Friday night. The place is nice, seemed like it had a lot of regulars and we were greeted and taken to a table almost immediately after arriving. They have a live DJ starting at 8pm (at least on Friday's) I've had my share of Peruvian food but I am always excited to try out a new spot. I order the lomo salteado. It was $19 for a huge plate of food! So you get a bargain for a delicious meal! It's definitely shareable! My plate of food was beyond AMAZING. The meat was super tender and flavorful. I think it was the best lomo I've had. My sister had the shrimp ceviche and she finished her whole plate and said it was delicious as well. This is a cute spot with great food at a great price. It is family friendly and also date night friendly! **Things to know -Parking sucks! Lol I had to circle around a few times before I found one. -They have a bar so feel free to grab a drink to go with your delicious meal!

Service was "okay" , legit had to whistle our waiter down to get his attention when we needed something. Food was decent but I've def had better Peruvian food. I had the arroz con mariscos and it came with a little side of ceviche. It was well cooked, not too salty but nothing spectacular about it. My drink was tasty I asked the waiter for something sweet and he delivered. Ambiance this looks like a chill spot you can also prob go on dates here. The music was great.

This restaurant was great when it came to its food. Every dish was delicious and full of flavor. I also had plenty of leftovers for the next day. The desert moves was all right, but I'm not gonna knock him for that since it wasn't really a Peruvian dessert. I wish they did have Peruvian dessert, but they didn't when I went service was good, but I wish the seating arrangements were better as the benches didn't align with the chairs on the other side of the table, and then I ended up sitting on a crack in between two of the wall benches.

decided to stop by for a birthday dinner around 8:30ish, we were seated , the place wasn't really full for a Saturday. Unfortunately it took forever for the waitress to take our order. After several minutes went by she took our order and we asked about an appetizer she said " I have to see if we still have it" just a simple order of chicken wings and fries .....she came back and said she'll put the order in. We also ordered the causa de pollo, chorros a la chalaca and pisco sour drinks which were all good. As per the ambiance, it was okay. The dj mostly played Peruvian cumbia and a few Spanish hits just about it. Would we come back here ? Probably but if you're not willing to wait an eternity to get taken care of then you're better off going elsewhere. Parking , they have a small lot but if you can't get any, good luck finding street parking.

I'm VERY picky when it comes to my burger and I must say this place DELIVERED! The texture, the presentation of the plate and the fries was such a great combination of flavors. Let's not forget the great customer service. I don't remember the drinks we had but I'd comeback just for this entree. Thanks again for a great experience!

Was surprised overall. We were a party of 9. It looked like a great place from the IG posts but we were very disappointed. Place is small, music was so loud you can't have a conversation with your party. Service was slow and disorganized. First waiter was so rude. He got our drinks order wrong even after repeating it numerous times. He did not want to be bothered. The girl who took care of our table later was much better. Food was okay. Been to better Peruvian restaurants. Will not return.

Over the weekend my friends and I were in the mood for burgers. We searched on Yelp and were going to go to the restaurant formerly known as "Bound Burger" only to find out the restaurant is now a Peruvian restaurant named "Peru Taypa" Although we were disappointed we couldn't get burgers, this place fulfilled our appetite. The restaurant was nice but not too Boujie haha. We were all in sweatpants so thankfully we didn't feel out of place. Our server was great and accommodating. The drinks were smooth and the food was amazing! Not to mention the portion sizes were generous. I personally do not have any complaints and if I'm ever in the area I will probably come here again.

Very cute place in the heart of Newark. Food was really good, the jalea was fresh not greasy. The service was good.

Horrible service, no greeting, no professionalism, drink took longer than the food.. staff need to learn how to handle things without the customers being affected.. the food was great, would have order more, but again, staff need some training about steps of service.. place has a huge potential, nice spot for the neighborhood but needs improvement. Saying that more as an advice for the manager/owner.

Came to Peru Taypa on a Saturday night with my husband and some friends from out of town. We were originally looking for this burger spot that was previously there but boy am I glad that we found this gem instead. The staff was super nice and service was quick! The restaurant had a really cute vibe and even had an outdoor area with heating that was decorated super nicely. As a whole we ordered a passion fruit margarita, regular margarita, and passion fruit mojitos. They were all DELICIOUS. With just the right amount of alcohol and mixer. For dinner we ordered the carne arroz chaufa, two lomo saltados with the egg on top and a regular lomo saltado with no egg. Everything was seasoned spectacularly. The only complaint I would have is that the meat was pretty chewy but other than that it was phenomenal. If you plan to visit definitely be prepared for New York prices. I definitely will be back whether it's for a date night where I can get all dressed up or as another chill vibes double date. Either way, I can't wait to try out more of the menu and take cute pictures in their outdoor section.

Really good Peruvian Restaurant. Great atmosphere and ambiance .. Yes parking is not easy to find but the food and cocktails were really good. My family and I enjoyed a nice Father's Day lunch. Definitely suggest ordering the Ruleta Marina (amazing Peruvian sampler). They had live music and the service was good as well.

The food was absolutely amazing! We were fans of the restaurant which previously occupied the space and were surprised to find this place, but keen to try! The indoor decor is lovely and understated, and the patio out back is adorable. The only drawbacks are that the food took a little while to come out from the kitchen, and the music was a bit too loud. (I will definitely return.)

Food was good. Service was poor such a beautiful place and that the staff doesn't care for service. We had one person attend and she disappeared the total.of tables coming in was 2 . They had 2 servers and one busser. At 6. I had to leave my seat 4 times to try to get service check on food and see what happened of why the lack.of attn in customer service. Did we a guest do something to be ignored. I have been in industry for a very long time I was recommended to come here. The drinks are too sweet and we could not even get them rectified. Again this was a sad experience but the food was again amazing. ​

Today my wife and I went to try this new Peruvian restaurant in Newark. When we arrived, a girl put us on the waiting list and told us it would take a while. After a few minutes, Luis Malasquez (the restaurant's promoter) showed up. He told us that it had been open for 5 or 6 months and that we could make a reservation by phone before coming and that the service would be faster. The wait was 1 hour. We sat down and were immediately served by a nice girl named Almendra, very friendly and she came to the table 3 times to check if everything was okay. The Choritos a la Chalaca were heavenly in flavor, as were the Anticuchos. They took a while to bring the Jalea. It lacked a little salt, but adding it fixed it. The jar of fresh and delicious Chicha Morada went very well... the price paid was fair and the amount of food was enough. You have to understand that this restaurant is quite popular, so there will always be a wait before being served. We will definitely return to try other dishes (but we will make a reservation by phone first), highly recommended, I give it 5 stars.

i am not the one to complain but the service wasn't good. The food was good but they didn't greet us properly. We had to ask to be seated. Once the food arrived the waitress forgot all about us , they didn't come by to ask if the food was good or if everything was alright. We waited for about 20 mins until we decided to ask another waitress for our bill and containers to bring home. This reservation last longer than it should've to be honest. No soy yo quien se queja, pero el servicio no fue bueno. La comida era buena pero no nos saludaron adecuadamente. Tuvimos que pedir que nos sentaran. Una vez que llegó la comida, la camarera se olvidó de nosotros, no vinieron a preguntar si la comida estaba buena o si todo estaba bien. Esperamos unos 20 minutos hasta que decidimos pedirle a otra camarera nuestra factura y los contenedores para llevar a casa. Para ser honesto, esta reserva dura más de lo que debería.

They ran out of steak at 6pm! Service was terrible . Waitress didn't understand our drink order . Pork chops were tough

I am so happy I came to Peru Taypa with my fiancé . The place provided a beautiful atmosphere and music. I was seated in what is the outside area which holds a beautiful large tree n the center with flowers , chandeliers and lanterns . A perfect place for a romantic dinner and also a great place to come with family and friends . Let's talk about the AMAzing food . I started w a shrimp ceviche which has been the BEST I HAVE EVER Had. Followed by a skirt steak with some noodles covered In a delicious green sauce . My Fiancée had their arroz chaufa w steak that was superb. Along w a steak . Honestly I give them a five star . The manager Joseph was extremely helpful and attentive . Highly recommend this spot .

El ceviche estaba muy desabrido, se supone que el pescado era "BASA" y era tilapia. Pedí un a yuca a la huancaina y después de media hora de esperar cuando ya habíamos terminado el ceviche, nos dijeron que iba a demorar más. Pedimos la papa a la huancaina y nunca llegó. Solo comimos un ceviche, una cubeta de cerveza y mi cuenta salió más de $80 dólares, nos cargaron la propina $15 dólares por un servicio pésimo. Es la segunda vez que visitamos este lugar y la misma historia. Definitivamente no volveremos nunca!! Mi familia y yo estamos dentro del rubro de restaurantes y sabemos de comida y atención. Muy decepcionados. Más seriedad chicos, lo pueden hacer mejor!!! No se dejen guiar y engañar por INSTAGRAM! Chequeen los review primero. Gracias

So I'm giving them one start because I'm not allowed to give them less What a disappointment .... I wanted to check out this new local place and when I checked their reviews they looked excellent. We went there tonight to celebrate my sister's birthday. I made the reservation the day before for 14 people. When we got there the bar attender asked us if we had a reservation. They were a little confused and asked us if we wanted to sit inside or the extended area of the restaurant. We picked the extended area because even though it was hot they had ventilation. The table was not set up for 14 people but they told us as the rest of the party arrived they'll add a table. So we ordered some drinks and it took them about an hour to bring our drinks out. It went downhill from there, the food is good but they will bring one drink at a time and when it was time for the food it came at the same rate. One plate every 40-45 minutes. Our waiter had an attitude, I asked if the drinks can be served in pitchers and he said no. Even when I saw other tables ordering pitchers of sangria. The beers were hot, my food was never delivered, when we asked for a manager, we were told they didn't have the right ingredients for the plate that never came out, we told him the plate we ordered it's one of their specialties and the other was fried plantains which don't even have any "special ingredients". The so called manager didn't even pay any attention to us and just wanted to adjust the bill. I don't have an issue paying for anything I consume but the excuses and the disregard for what we had to said did bother me Like I said the food was good, but the service sucks from drinks to the food they never told us we couldn't have. We were there for 3 hours and walked out without my food being served, again very disappointed because we wanted to support our local restaurants

Nice vibe, good spacing. Great juices and cold beers. The mussels entrada was great, better than the ceviche de camarones (not bad, a nice amount of spice). Chicken and salchipapas were also on point.

Visiting NJ/NY and this place is within walking distance of our air bnb. It looks unassuming from the outside but once you walk in it's so nicely decorated! We sat inside, but the patio had gorgeous vines and chandeliers hanging from the big tree in the center, with little twinkle lights for ambiance. The service was fast and friendly. Piña colada was instantly one of my top 3 favorites, and their lomo saltado was packed with flavor! The portions were generous, I didn't have any room for dessert. I'm going to try and come back before my vacations over - it was THAT good!
