The 10 Best Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal to Book Right Now - AFAR

"Pestana Palace Lisboa is itself a designated national landmark. The 194-room hotel occupies a carefully restored 19th-century manor that once belonged to the cocoa baron Marquis of Valle-Flôr, and now caters to queens of pop like Madonna. The manor is set within an immaculately manicured private park filled with palms, subtropical plants, sculptures, a former pond-turned-swimming pool, and a spa with an indoor pool and Turkish baths. Palace interiors give the air of a gilded cocoon—all ornate ceiling frescoes, soaring stained-glass windows, and magnificent oil canvases—while the main restaurant, Valle Flôr, has Regency airs and Portuguese fare. Guests may linger on Saturdays for a ‘chic-nic’ lunch on the lawn by the pool." - Laura Dannen Redman

"About a 20-minute cab ride from the historic city center, Pestana Palace Lisboa in Santo Amaro bears a unique honor: it’s a designated national landmark. The 194-room property occupies a carefully restored 19th-century manor that once belonged to the cocoa baron Marquis of Valle-Flôr and is set in an immaculately manicured private park filled with lush palm trees, subtropical plants, sculptures, and a former pond-turned-swimming pool. Lavish architectural details such as ornate ceiling frescoes, soaring stained-glass windows, gleaming marble columns, and intricately carved woodwork combine with magnificent oil canvases, glittering chandeliers, and garlanded mirrors to give the air of a gilded cocoon. Four sprawling Royal Suites—one of which reportedly hosted Madonna as recently as 2017—are within the palace itself, while smaller, elegantly furnished rooms are located in two modern annexes."

Amazing and beautiful palace. We had a wonderful time staying here while we explored Lisbon. It was so nice that we almost wanted to stay at the hotel all day. It was the perfect place to start and end our days. A wonderful breakfast buffet with attentive staff who would prepare you an omelette or make you waffles if you wanted something else. Then cocktails in the beautiful and elegant lounges. Or relaxing by the pool with a glass of wine. We loved it.

If you want to be treated like Royalty without actually having blue blood, then come to the Pestana Palace Lisboa, a hotel that lives up to its name, reputation, and more. You are greeted at the entrance by Halio in a regal and fun manor right out of a movie. Isabella at the front desk treated us like family. I was escorted to my room by Paula who gave me a tour and revealed a secret along the way. The room was elegant and comfortable with towels and a robe as soft as a baby’s bottom. Breakfast was delicious with a great selection to choose from. The bartender, Nunu, is a wonderful mixologist as well as source of information. The hotel’s at least 15 meter indoor pool is magnificent and perfect to swim laps in with water that is just the right temperature that has no chlorine scent. There is also a very nice outside pool with a fountain in the middle. Probably best of all is the service. So if you want a vacation while pampered in just the right way, then Pestana Palace Lisboa is the place for you. The only challenge is leaving this wonderful hotel🙏😊

Very nice waiter - Bruno was a treasure. He was extremely attentive and caring. The food was good as well. We had an engagement at their location and they took extra care to offer us free Portweine and a cake with “Congratulations” written on it in our native language. It was worth the money spent.

We only spent a night because friends warned the property was tired, but in hindsight we would have stayed longer. The original palace / mansion is beautiful, with stunning details throughout and a good bar. Breakfast was excellent. The service was impeccable. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms are in modern annexes looking out either over the garden, or the city. A garden view is great and makes for a very quiet room. There were several loud groups which took away from the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of the hotel.

The hotel is super dreamy and fascinating. The restaurant is beyond beautiful in the decor and it feels like you are a king and queen dinning in there back in time! The food was super exquisite and the service was superb! Such a beautiful unforgettable experience! Bruno and Luiz were superb and so friendly, kind and helpful! They showed us around and were so welcoming!

We were so disappointed with our stay. My husband had been there for a conference and thought it was beautiful, so we booked a room for our last night in Portugal. The buildings are beautiful, as are the grounds. There is some wear and tear showing, however. Our garden view room was pretty, but not amazing. The bathroom was so dark it was hard to put makeup on. The toilet didn't flush completely and the shower door was dangerous and an accident was waiting to happen. We were unable to eat in the main restaurant because an outside group had booked it. We were met there by a very unfriendly man, who didn't offer any solutions for us or offer to help. When we brought our concerns to the desk, the person there was more helpful and got a reservation for us at the Lake House restaurant. The food there was very good, but we were disappointed that we couldn't eat in the main restaurant. Our air conditioning wasn't cooling our room so we were awake all night, sweltering in the heat. We called the desk at 3:30 am and they sent someone to look at it. He was unable to get it working and offered a fan. After a night of little sleep, we at least had a very good breakfast. For the price of our room and being told by staff that we were the king and queen for our stay, we were really let down.

Excellent & freindly welcome on arrival. Nothing too much trouble. History and a tour on route to our room, plenty of useful information. Excellent continual service to the rooms and cleaning was faultless. The wide ranging breakfast was delightful. And the walk through the gardens to the pool was a great pleasure. To name a few Andre to greet you at the door, Rita and Rita Breakfast and restuarant and reception staff very helpfull. Would definately go again. Diana & Peter

The best experience in Lisbon! We had a special event to celebrate and they were the best, kind, and extremely professional. Great meals, atmosphere and service overall. Special thanks to Bruno. 10/10 and a must try.

Yelp
We've been to Portugal four times we always start our trip at this hotel. It's amazing. The food's great service is good.

Yelp
I'm one of those folks that really, really hesitate to leave a negative review. But, alas... We arrived after New Year's Eve so perhaps everyone was exhausted. We got the vibe our person at the front desk was just not happy. We were put in a room in the addition, I don't recall the room number, but it's the last room down a flight of stairs into a subterranean level, down the hall - last room on the left. I assume it's up against the laundry because of the staff conversations and noise coming through the wall. I'll attach a photo of the porch with a "garden view." We walked down to Pasteis de Belem for the world's best Pastel de Nata and I thought about it. On return a more cordial staff complied with my request to relocate. The second room was much better, but not stellar. Probably a bad day, but we were treated poorly.

Yelp
This place was an absolute beautiful place to stay! Customer service was great checking in and they were so nice. It's kind of a maze at first to figure out how to get to the bar and the breakfast place but you do. Breakfast is great, all the different juice choices are amazing and order the eggs benedict, and bartenders are great as well. Piano player at night in the bar is outstanding. Used to be a castle they turned into a hotel. Just hanging out in one of the lobbies makes you feel like a queen! And the view from the middle one is really beautiful. When you arrive in the room you receive some Port as well as the little custard deserts that are so popular there. Pasteis de Balem still has the best though... Rooms are spacious and I had one with a huge balcony all to myself which was really nice. Had dinner one night in the bar. It was pasta with white sauce and veggies and was so delicious! They have a chapel in the hotel as well which is really pretty! Really amazing pool and spa as well. They also have an indoor pool, sauna, and steam room free to use for any hotel guest. When first arriving at the gate you feel like you are arriving at a castle. You will for sure enjoy your stay!

Yelp
The chef and staff were absolutely amazing! The swordfish grilled and smoked with a passion fruit coulis was superb, a perfect balance of flavors!

Yelp
Very nice hotel. Be sure to read the fine print of your rooms when you register. There seems to be quite a difference in room size and amenities. Some have coffee makers. Some don't. Some have balconies or porches and others do not. Our room ended up being quite dark and gloomy. Has very nice indoor and outdoor pools. Not quite big enough for lap swims but can do in a pinch. Has gym and on site spa for massages. Pool area also includes hot tub, sauna and steam bath. Breakfast bar is very nice. Lots of breads, fruits, cheeses and meats to choose from. Different styles of eggs, pastries, yogurts in cereals. Coffee, tea, juices, and mimosas available too. Really wish we could have such nice breakfast spreads in the states but hey, that's one of the things that makes Europe special. Location is close to Belem and the Conference Center. Quite far from the down town tourist sites though.

Yelp
Wow! This was a wonderful place to stay. The staff were fantastic. They provided me with an adapter to help since I had forgotten mine at home. The doorman gave me a tour of the property and helped me to understand a bit more about the history of Lisbon, which I quite enjoyed! The room was nice with a pretty view of the garden and pool. I did not use most of the amenities like the pool, or the spa, or the bar or breakfast, but I did use the sitting room to sit and read. One thing that is inescapable at this hotel is that they have wonderful period furniture that makes you feel like royalty. Honestly staying in this place made me feel like I was returning to my castle each night or living like a movie star. Overall everything was great, and I really am enamored with the architecture, the decor, and the service!

Yelp
I usually don't like staying in hotels, but of the grand hotels I have stayed in and spent considerable time, my favorite two have been the Oriental in Bangkok and Raffels in Singapore, so I'm now more than thrilled to add a third, Pestana Palace, to my favorites list. When I first arrived and saw it, I almost flipped. It really was a palace, gorgeous, really sumptuous and classic in every way, ultra immaculate in every detail, totally breath taking in beauty along with the surrounding garden grounds, pools, gym areas and their newer room additions in which I stayed. Better yet, a staff that was more than helpful, charmingly friendly without any pretentiousness who really made me feel totally at home yet at the same time as if I were king of the place. I really can't say enough about how well I was treated, or how nice are the grounds and general environment. In addition, the meals, drinks, everything in every way and in every detail, truly superlative. It's really such a nice place, that my pictures unfortunately hardly do it the justice it deserves. Would I look forward to returning to Pestana Palace? You bet I would, and within heartbeat!!!

Yelp
I stayed here for two nights. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the service was pretty quick from the bell boy to the room service. The room service food was great, I liked it better than the food in the restaurant downstairs. The room was beautiful, we had one of the suites with a balcony. You have tk search for the bed pillows in the top of the cabinets and make sure to really check fot all your things before leaving because the maid had put my pillow that I brought with me and was black and obviously not one of theres locked up in one of the cabinets. I would have forgotten it if I hadnt looked. The bathroom was nice and spacious as well. My biggest complaint would be the wifi, it barely worked at all. It was a pretty long and confusing walk to get to the gym/spa but it was a nice and had two pools as well.

Yelp
WOW. Probably one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. The grounds are spectacular and we actually used our last day of vacation just to laze around the hotel. Spent a great deal of time in the hot tub and indoor pool (weather was rainy/ cloudy) which was just perfect. If you want further proof of how beautiful this place is, they were filming episodes of Top Model while we were staying there. The room itself was pretty spacious. I think we got the "cheapest" room but it was very nice by leaps and bounds. There are fluffy robes and slippers to use, and at night for turn down they put a little mat next to the bed to wipe your feet off on. Wifi in the rooms was very fast. Included in the room is breakfast. a buffet from 6:30-10:30. They have just about everything you could imagine, and if they do not you can always request something. Service here is spot on. We felt very attended to and everyone was very friendly. Several time were were able to ask the front desk for information we could not find readily available on the internet. I will give them five stars, but there are some things I think they could change. They should perhaps look into getting those bed joiner things. The beds were very comfy, but still spaced apart a few times when I was trying to cuddle in bed. They also keep a fire going (I'm not sure where) during they day that is very strong and gave me a screaming headache. Maybe it's the type of wood they use? You're not going to find a meal under $25 there. I guess if you're at a 5 star hotel you can theoretically afford it, but it was the end of our vacation and we definitely shared a few meals to keep cost down. Another downfall out of their control is their location. It's about a 7EU cab ride to just about anywhere. They do offer shuttles at 9:30 and 11 I think, but we never had a chance to catch them. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Lisbon, and will look back fondly on our time there.

Yelp
Who doesn't dream of staying In a palace? while this place is a bit outside of the more touristy parts of Lisbon, it's a small city and a short cab ride to anywhere you want to go. The rooms are an addition of the main palace, but still very nice. The staff are amazingly nice, much like the people of Portugal. The spa and pool are amazing. There's a poolside bar with service and great prices. I moved to the Brown's in the city center after my work trip and wished that I'd stayed at the Pestana the whole time!
google avatar

Joanne F.

Yelp
Lol there is no way this is a five or even four stars hotel. If you're staying during a warm month STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL. They do not have air conditioning and are severely understaffed. I'm staying here right now and all the rooms are 85 degrees. I'm giving this place two stars because the grounds are beautiful and the common rooms (breakfast area, bar) are beautiful. But what's the point of having beautiful rooms if literally no one goes in them because they're boiling hot?
google avatar

Laurin G.

Yelp
This is wonderful hotel! It's beauty is only surpassed by the impeccable service provided by the entire staff. We stayed here for a wedding which was organized by their planner, Filipa, who was marvelous! Foot was outstanding in their restaurant also. Staff was very helpful in providing sightseeing recommendations. Our first trip to Portugal was made very special by the Pestana Palace

Yelp
Really? Our flight was cancelled and Air Canada put us here because nothing by the airport was available. Expensive cocktails, mediocre food, overwhelmed staff, stained carpets, crooked artwork. Why wouldn't you pay more?

Eileen S.

Yelp
Stayed three nights as part of a tour of Portugal. The grounds are beautiful. We stayed in the addition and rooms are ok. Public areas and hallways could use refreshing - lots of stained carpeting. The biggest drawback is you cannot walk anywhere from here. It is a cab ride into the city of Lisbon. Breakfast buffet is nice. Meals in lounge are ok but very pricey - only ate there because we didn't want to take another cab back to the city in the evening. If I return to Lisbon, I would stay in the city center.

Yelp
Great palace with great service & wonderful food. I would stay at this hotel again, my only complaint is that it's very far from most of the downtown area, where we were mainly wanting to be. They offer shuttle service but it's only at specific times & isn't very frequent. I would recommend that they have more frequent shuttle offerings so that it's more convenient for their guests. Great stay, they made us feel very welcome. Overall, would love to stay here again!

Yelp
Words can not tell you how fantastic this palace hotel is. Everything is five stars to the staff, service , gardens, rooms and breakfast buffet. Its in a nice area. Special thanks to Marie at check in and to Rui the shuttle driver to different sites and the best porter. Thank you both again Rui & Maria. First you are given a tour of the grounds, gardens and services, then you are escort ted back to your room where your bags are waiting for you. If you want a great price then hit trip ad visor, or hotel's we got a rate of $233 for a double with an upgrade plus free buffet, not even in New York City can you get a five star hotel for that price including taxes. The art work is fantastic too and the dinning rooms are a picture out of an art book. The food served at breakfast is just great. Thank you once again Pestana Palace staff for a great time in a beautiful city, Lisbon. Now if I can only find out where I put my crown that Marqus R he always wants to wear it when he is sitting on the royal thrown.
