The Petar Kružić Stairway, also known as Trsat Steps, is one of Rijeka's iconic symbols and a very special experience to those visitors who like history, views, and some physical challenge. Built in the early 16th century by the captain Petar Kružić, this stairway was originally meant to be the path that led up to the Trsat Sanctuary for pilgrims. Today, it is a fascinating combination of cultural heritage and scenic beauty.
It has over 500 steps, leading from almost the very center of Rijeka to Trsat Castle and the Church of Our Lady of Trsat. The climb is quite steep in places, but generally manageable for most people who take their time. Small chapels and stone markers along the way add a historical charm and remind visitors of the stairway's spiritual importance.
The view from the top is its own reward: panoramic views over Rijeka, the Rječina River, and the hills around make all the effort worthwhile. On top, there are cafes, peaceful inner courtyards, and an impressive Trsat Castle, ideal for sightseeing or relaxing after your climb.
Although the steps can be strenuous during hot weather, the view is highly rewarding. The Petar Kružić Stairway is a must-see for all tourists visiting Rijeka for culture, sport, and beautiful views for all people in the city.
