A World Tour of Abandoned Amusement Parks

"Nowadays, what remains of the Peter Strauss Ranch is mainly a hiker’s haven. Do a bit of exploring, and you’ll come across curious finds like a ranch house, vacant aviary, empty swimming pool, radio house, dam, and lookout tower. The strange mishmash of abandoned structures are a glimpse into the park’s many past lives. Walking in from the pedestrian entrance, you’ll first lay eyes on the lookout tower. This landmark is a testament to the ranch’s former owner, Harry Miller, who bought the land in 1923 and used it as a weekend retreat from his automobile factory in Los Angeles. Local legend has it that Miller used the tower to watch for police during the days of Prohibition, while throwing parties in his ranch house, which stands farther into the park (though there’s no proof behind these rumors). He also built a grand aviary, which he used to house his exotic birds. Now, the enormous cage houses art exhibits instead of feathery residents. Unfortunately, Miller experienced financial ruin during the Great Depression and had to sell the place. It was eventually purchased and developed into an amusement park. It featured what was at the time the largest pool on the West Coast (now empty), which could fit 3,000 people. The Terrazzo dance floor, also left over from the property’s first stint as a theme park, still stands today next to the ranch house. Musicians such Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and the Mandrell Sisters once played on its stage. As the years went on, the place changed hands and names quite a few times. Amusement parks of various themes sprouted up one after the other, each leaving its own footprint on the land. If you look closely enough, you’ll see ruins left over from the “Fairytale Land” sign at the front of the park. The faint outline of a baseball diamond lies in front of the ranch house, which people can still use today. There’s also a ruined structure that once formed the dam creating “Lake Enchanto,” which people used for swimming, fishing, and rowing. Lake Enchanto eventually closed around 1960. The park is known as Peter Strauss Ranch today because the actor bought the place in 1976. He kept it for a few years, restoring the park to a more “natural” look, and then sold the ranch to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in 1987.  Update: The ranch house was destroyed by the Woolsey Fire in November 2018. Much of the property was burnt as well, and it remains closed for repairs." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

There are no signs in the parking lot and finding trails is difficult. It seems like a cool place but there’s no cell service so you’re kind of left on your own if you don’t bring a map and thoroughly research it beforehand. The place seems like it would be great for events but when on a late November afternoon it felt straight out of a horror movie. People walking angry dogs, the few people you interact with have something strange about them, and the buildings/structures look super creepy. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back except it’s just not that remarkable. Not a bad place, but I think there are better hikes in the area

Great old park in the mountains. Was an old ranch house. There is a rustic stone theatre in the center. Tiny Porch Concerts did their shows there

A lot of great history in this place. Saw a great concert here.

Though a nice hike that day wasn't. My poor pup got not only sunburnt on top but his feet as well. After him going into the algae water I had to carry him back. Love him so much but on a 100+degree weather, oye. Lol.

Nice little park with a shady path lined with Sycamores, Eucalyptus and Oaks. Plenty of free parking. Nice features like large grass lawn in front of the ranch house, very clean restrooms, picnic tables under the trees, hiking trails where dogs are allowed make this park particularly attractive for families with kids and pets. Popular with plein air artists, photographers and nature enthusiasts this park is a great setting for your photo shoot or an outdoor event.

Yelp
First time visiting this place. Was able to find parking and go on a decent hike that is perfect for beginners. In certain areas it was muddy. It was a bit windy. Would definitely recommend this place if you want to go on a hike that isn't intense.

Yelp
First time visiting Peter Strauss Ranch. The trails had lots of weeds, under brush. We didn't complete the trail, lots of holes on the ground, harder to walk on. Will visit again in the cooler days and when the weeds are cleared... and then update this review. Heard from a local there are free summer concerts every other Sunday. We saw some critters.. lots of lizards, a cotton tail bunny and a ribbon snake. There's lots of place to picnic. But our fave is eating at the Old Place.

Yelp
Gorgeous and Historic Long ago this was an amusement park. Kids rode horses and there were live bands performing in a stage in the middle of a pool. The pool is still there although drained and overgrown. Now it's just a gorgeous place to hike and catch pollywogs in the spring. You can feel and (no lie) sometimes see the ghosts of cowboys and flappers. Watch out for peacocks and when you look up, there's nothing but Mother Nature's grace all around.

Yelp
A perfect spot to compliment your visit to The Old Place & The Cornell Wine Company. When tables outdoors, small spot is our secret place to picnic. So have some blankets, wear sensible shoes & you have another trick up your sleeve. Finish with a stroll rock hopping along the creek's river bed or to explore the trails. NOTE: I'm looking forward to next season's Tiny Porch Concert Series at the Ranch's unique amphitheater.

Yelp
I used to come here with my dad when I was younger in the early 90s. I always loved coming here as a kid. I'm glad to know its still open! It is so peaceful and nice here. So much beauty here!

Yelp
I go to the ranch to paint outdoors in oils and pastel. I love it when there is water in the creek although it doesn't last much past May. The heat dries it up and then you can explore the dry creek bed. When I was in my 20's, I lived in a modest little rental house across the street from this park and rode my black Arabian horse on the trails here. Wow - I was so happy then! But that was a long time ago. Nope, not telling my age. Ha Ha. I feel blessed to have had this place as a part of my life (then and now) and it is always deeply uplifting to come and walk among the trees again and see the place is still being cared for. Try to visit in the spring when the creek has water and there are ducklings hatching. Last weekend I saw a momma Mallard with 6 tiny babies who looked only days old. She was hiding in the reeds but popped out and surprised me with a visit!

Yelp
This place is great, is close to LA (right off 101, exit Kanan Rd), but seems so far away, remote, like you're away on a trip. It reminds me of Cambria. Follow the signs off the freeway and you'll get there. You'll pass the ranch to get to the parking lot. Free (plenty) parking and you can visit the ranch for free, grab a map, explore the grounds. You can take a hike on the trail. Or bring a picnic as others suggested, I did and it was great, we had a nice meal out, in the nature. There are various spots with picnic tables. There were other people around, but not too many, they kept it to themselves, it was nice and quiet. Very relaxing, you can bring a book. Sure, there are bikers passing by, but it didn't bother us. Across there is a bar/gastro pub with an interesting menu and a wine store/art gallery that offers wine tasting. Cool places, it's worth checking out. If you live in LA and like exploring it, this place is a find, a little gem, away from it all. Just a cool area that makes you feel like you're in a weekend gateway.

Yelp
This was once the site of a private weekend getaway turned "working class" amusement park. The first owner built a stone ranch house with an aviary and a look-out tower to watch-out for police during prohibition. During the Great Depression it was converted to an amusement park where upwards of 5,000 people would drive up from the valley to visit. You could fish, row boats, and swim in the lake. There were amusement park rides, a dance floor, a 250-seat amphitheater, and a swimming pool that was the largest in the west coast. It could fit up to 3,000 people. It was fun to explore the park ruins. There are remnants of Fairytail Land that was once the site of a princess castle. At the Terrazzo Dance Floor/Patio singers such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson once performed. There's also an old stone Radio House and an aviary. The main house was under construction the day I visited. Peter Strauss Ranch Loop Trail is 0.6 mile, round-trip, fairly easy, uphill zig-zagging path that is well marked and reinforced with wooden stairs. You'll pass through tree tunnels, view wild flowers, and pass over a small bridge. The day I visited the nearby Triunfo Creek was filled with water and flowing from the recent heavy rains. There is plenty of free parking. It's dog friendly. On the weekends I recommend walking across the street and visiting Old Place restaurant and Cornell Winery & Tasting Room when you're done.

Yelp
Beautiful easy walk. The only downfall was that with all the rain it had ruined the trails so it was kind of a free for all as to where to walk. The thing that stood out to me the most was all the different colored rocks...purple, blue, orange, pink. They were beautiful. Skipped some rocks in the stream and enjoyed the views.

Yelp
Totally cool place up in the woods. Nice trail to walk behind it that's just over a mile long, perfect way to spend a saturday. Very shady and perfect for a hot day, and a cool ranch with a unique history that's been kept in tact. Check out the huge swimming pool, once the largest in California when it had water. Performers used to perform from the center section of it, very interesting place with a lot of history. Fishing places and good food near by too, come spend a day!

Yelp
Beautiful park with thickly wooded trails and a beautiful creek when it has water. Lots of wildlife and nice native flora, sycamores and wildflowers. Not crowded.

Yelp
Hardly ever crowded, beautiful trails, there's a large, well kept lawn right in front to have a lazy picnic on under the towering Santa Monica mountains, it's breathtaking. Only bummer might be all the Harley Davidson motorcycles buzzing on near by Mulholland each Sunday, but there's still plenty of places on the ranch to enjoy nature's silence.

Yelp
My best friend got married here last weekend and the spot could not be more gorgeous. This location really made me feel like I was no longer in California and at a destination wedding. I was expecting there to be more incest and am sure I got a few mosquito bites, but compared to the mosquitos in Michigan, it was bad at all. During the wedding rehearsal, it got pretty warm, but by the time the wedding started, it had cooled down. I absolutely love nature wedding locals and this is a great place that away from the city and absolutely quiet and intimate.

Yelp
Great place, very peaceful, but jellow jackets everywhere. Warnings about them everywhere too. I can tell you that the sting from the yellow jacket was REALLY painful. Wont be back unless they can fix the problem.
