DEFINITION OF CALGARY

Calgary (YYC) Eats for Epik High
View Postcard for Peters' Drive-In

Google
I heard it's a must-eat dish when traveling to Calgary. It didn't look special, but it had an unusual taste. Especially, the fries and milkshakes were so delicious. I ordered a medium shake and a family-sized fries, but I couldn't finish it because the portions were too much. If you're traveling to Calgary, if you're passing by, you should try it.

Peter’s Drive-In is one of those classic places that never goes out of style. The milkshakes are definitely the main event — rich, creamy, and full of flavor. Always a treat and absolutely worth the stop. The burgers were good — not the best I’ve ever had, but still solid and satisfying. What really stood out to me were the crispy onion rings. Super crunchy, flavorful, and honestly one of the better versions I’ve had. They made the meal feel complete. Even though the place gets insanely busy, the staff were friendly and kept the service moving smoothly. The place was also clean and well-maintained, which you don’t always expect from high-traffic fast food joints. Overall, a great casual spot that delivers on classic diner vibes. Go for the shakes, stay for the onion rings. Definitely coming back.

Google
Great burgers (make sure you get all the toppings) and the best onion rings in town. Shakes are the main attraction and always worth a visit. Loses a full star for the outrageous price for a sundae. $7 for a tiny ice cream amount, whip cream and a cherry on top. And then your topping choice. I had hot fudge which was fine but the value is not there. Always get a shake (up to three flavors from a huge selection). Highly recommend, but stay away from the sundae.

Google
First place I went to after coming back to Calgary after more than a decade. Smoothies tasted as good as I remember. Burgers and onion rings were tasty too. Fries were bad as others have mentioned. Such nostalgia.

Isaac Faulkner

Google
So cheap. $6.80 for my cheeseburger, which was very good. $6.80 for my milkshake, which I feel is pricey but it is very good as well. This place is a gem and I will be back to try the hot dogs, fries, rings and other shake Flavours. Big thumbs up to Peter’s.

E Sayed

Google
Worlds most amazing thick shake which feels more like a meal every sip you take from that straw. More you drink it, more sharper jawline you get cuz of the shakes thickness You can either go solo flavour or mix 2-3 flavours at once and I’m sure you’ll get the taste of all

Muhammed Zuhair

Google
The hype is real! Their real fruit shakes blended with vanilla ice cream are totally worth it. You can even customize with multiple flavors. I tried Pina Colada and Strawberry—both were amazing!

Victoria Hutton

Google
I got a single cheeseburger (not pictured), small fries, and a bubblegum vanilla milkshake. the milkshake and burger were good! the fries were very meh. there was hardly any seasoning on them and there was a layer of fries at the bottom that were soggy or not cooked all the way through.

Yelp
Stopped at Peters Drive in last week for lunch . Lineups were not bad on weekdays but I'm sure weekends would be crazy ! My fav are the single burgers which is 1.5 burger patty and when they are made fresh , and you can eat them in the nearby park or their lot , they are delicious! We also got a small fry which is good enuf for two of us to share . And a share to share - our fav is maple coconut which tastes like a praline shake . Our service was great with fresh hot food to enjoy on a nice fall sunny day together . Will come back again to enjoy !

Yelp
Good food, but it's not the same as it use to be 25 yrs ago. They need to put a freeze on pricing!

Yelp
This was a great way to start my trip in Calgary! Saw this place on all the must visit lists. I ordered a single burger. Interesting that relish is used as a topping but it works so well. The good beef quality in Calgary def helps make this burger better. They also come in large fry and onion ring containers. Which everything is made to order. You've also got to get a milkshake here. I went with a chocolate of course. It was 5 degrees outside but I would stand in the cold again for this experience.

Yelp
This place is terrible. I have been going here for many years and this place has gone down hill badly. Got Family fries- full of oil tiny little fries and very expensive. How can you not know how to do fries? Onion rings terrible. 2 milkshakes- maple walnut - did not even taste like nothing - vanilla strawberry same thing. My husband and I both got food poisoning. Do not go to this place- BAD NEWS. So sad to see what has happened to our Peter's drive in. I would give this place a minus if I could.
google avatar

Yelp
We came across this place by mistake and saw how busy they were, so decided to give it a try. Their drive-thru experience is very quick and easy despite the lines. We got a strawberry-chocolate milkshake, which tasted delicious! This option wasn't even on the menu but seems like the flavour combos are flexible. The size was massive.. we didn't know there were different sizes so I assume they gave the bigger one. I can't speak to their food yet so will have to revisit one day!
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
I try to get a milkshake at Peters' Drive-In in Calgary much as possible (although I am a bit lactose intolerant), but their other items are just alright...so 8.8/10
google avatar

Yelp
I mean I know this is from a while ago but I went with my husband and child to peters drive in for the first time today. Well it was my first time but my husband used to go there regularly because he worked in the area. He got a blueberry milkshake and I got the marshmallow one. He offered me some of his milkshake to try and when I offered him some of Mine to try he said no because he didn't want any because he said he didn't want to get sick ! I said, what do you mean? Turns out he told me to read an article and we researched it and in 2005 people got sick from drinking the marshmallow milkshakes! It was specifically the marshmallow milkshakes because people got E. coli from drinking them because a worker had E. coli . I know that it was a while ago so that's why I am not faulting the place for it but it still scared me!

Yelp
You can tell that this place is usually busy and pretty packed. We went at an odd hour straight from the airport and they were fairly busy. They have a lot of staff and it's pretty efficient. They have two drive-through on both sides of the building and two order and pick up windows in the front. There's not much covered space. Only three tables directly in front of the ordering window. The rest of the dining tables are outdoors surrounding the parking lot. Most are under shaded trees. It's more of a take away type of fast food. They have a special sauce they use here called Pete's sauce, which is a combination of mayonnaise, mustard, barbecue sauce, relish, and diced onions. You can add free, extras, like tomato, lettuce, banana, peppers, Pete sauce, but the only thing they will put on the side for you is mustard and ketchup. They have a lot of different milkshake flavors. Every day they have a daily milkshake flavor for 80 cents off. If you eat the hamburgers plain to me, it's nothing special but if you add all the additional toppings, it taste much better. Their poutine was simple but pretty good. most poutines I have had are usually very salty. It was just simple, french fries dressed in brown gravy and white melted cheese on top. The onion rings come with a pretty big serving and we're pretty good. The milkshakes were good, but nothing extra special. Make sure if you order the hotdog that you add condiments to it. My daughter doesn't like sauce so she got it plain. Therefore it was not good at all. And definitely not worth the price. Quiktrip gas station hotdogs are much better. Overall pretty decent hamburger joint.

Yelp
Second time coming here, and it's just as amazing! The burgers are to die for, the fries are homemade and so good. They have a nice range of milkshakes and drinks! The staff are always so nice and patient. This place is always busy and has queues and rightfully so!
google avatar

Cheyenne L.

Yelp
Everything went well the only thing I wish they had was more seating and that the garbages were taken care of before the bees and wasps started to fly around and cause people to pack up and leave
google avatar

Roman S.

Yelp
It's busy, a good sign? Even with it being busy food comes out quickly. The good: Milkshakes - large sized (wish there was a smaller option). They are so good. Quality milk and flavors. You can mix 3 flavors for a personalized shake combo. The meh: Burgers are mediocre. Maybe I'm not familiar with Calgary style burgers but, they were super bland (even after requesting lettuce and tomato on it). I would not ever choose to eat it again. The poutine. I'm not super familiar with it since I'm not Canadian and didn't grow up eating it. However, it was so soggy and so bad I threw it away after a few bites. For a national dish this version really sucked (Sorry Canada). If it wasn't for the milkshakes I would need to really think if it would even get 2 stars.

Yelp
Was advised to check out this place on a suggestion from a friend and my sister-in-law Went for some dessert as I was told to try the milkshake The milkshake options are cool as you can combine at least three different flavours I went with just a vanilla Oreo milkshake My wife went with a vanilla dipped cone A very thick milkshake but very tasty Love the tradition of the 50's/60's diner and how they have kept that Love the lil fun facts that I saw on the restaurant They offer hamburgers/fries etc Traditional diner drive-in food Very very busy place but I can honestly see why Drive thru is fairly busy so you have to wait so fair warning Definitely recommend this spot in Calgary
google avatar

Yelp
Peters is still one of the best place's to get a good milkshake. Their food is also great, the burger's are charred to perfection, the hot dog's have a lot of flavor and the fries are not just bad and soggy fast food fries and I like that a lot about this place. I've never had a bad experience with the service here but, I have seen some people argue with the staff there and it looked like impatient people just trying to get out of there in a rush. Now the environment at Peters is like stepping back 30 years and if you don't go through the drive thru, I would recommend you walk to the table's in the parking lot beside Peters. If I could give this place 10 stars I would and that's why i recommend this place anyone who has never tried Peters before.

Yelp
I was really excited to try Peter's Drive-In on our trip to Calgary. We came on Wednesday around 12 and they were very busy. You have the option of ordering by the drive-through or through a window at the front. We ordered at the front window. There's a separate order to pick up your order once its ready. Make sure to watch the window as they display your order number when it's ready for pickup! There's a few tables to eat and also ample parking if you prefer to eat in your car. I ordered the regular burger. We also got onion rings and an Oreo milkshake to share. The milkshake was thick and tasted very good. It was definitely a good idea that we decided to share it. The onion rings were also great and not too greasy. Burger was tasty and Peter's sauce was delicious. Definitely a great spot to check out and I'll for sure come back next time I'm in Calgary!

James H.

Yelp
Had not been at Peters' for sometime but yesterday we were close and decided to go there to get our dinner. Ordered 3 milk shakes, family fries and 3 double cheeseburgers. The milk shakes and fries were as good as we remembered them, however the sauce on the burgers was terrible. It tasted like bad commercially smoked BBQ sauce. My wife and daughter only ate half their burgers. What happened to the original Gus Peters' sauce? Get rid of the crap they used yesterday and bring back the original sauce.
google avatar

Luis G.

Yelp
This was shockingly bad. Imagine "beef" patties with the consistency and flavor of meat loaf doused in store bought bbq sauce - I don't exaggerate when I say a gas station frozen burrito would have been a better choice. I thought Calgary was in the middle of cattle country - why would they serve army rations to unsuspecting civilians? The kicker was (and the thing that had me questioning my sanity) the LINES WERE LONG; This place is POPULAR! I wanted to start interviewing people to dig deep into their culinary souls - to ask them what got them to this sad point their lives. I'll settle with never coming back.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Had an issue with our order, make sure you check the receipt to make sure your order is right. The burgers were rubbery and inedible. The fries were okay, the onion rings were good. Unpopular opinion - the shakes aren't worth the stomach ache. I got an Oreo shake and threw most of it away. It's not even top 10 Oreo shakes I've had. Wont be going back and won't suggest this to anyone in my life.
google avatar

Jacob Q.

Yelp
Pretty good! Can't go wrong with good ol fashion burgers and shakes!! Food portions were huge!! & the prices were affordable! Great quick stop!
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Great shakes with tons of variety. Highly recommend just coming for the shakes alone. The burgers, fries and onions were also really good. Overall definitely a good experience

George A.

Yelp
Every thing was good the milk shakes were amazing hamburgers are also amazing customer service is amazing so 5stars

Yelp
Peters' Drive-In is a landmark of Calgary. Who hasn't heard of the icon Peters' Drive-In here! This place has been on my to try list for years and I finally got a chance to try it. The name Drive-In is no joke. It is a real Drive-ln like the old days. Luckily there are two picnic tables outside for eating. The other option is to eat inside the car or take it to go. So I ordered: - Single Burger (came with ralish, Peters' sauce, mustard and onions) - Blueberry milkshake - Onion rings. There wasn't much flavor in the onion rings. It was fresh and the outer layer had a nice crunch. The blueberry milkshake was delicious. I do like the fact that they have over 4000 flavors. You can mix and match up to 3 flavors. The burger was ok. It was very mediocre. This is definitely a fast food place. I don't think I will come back for their burger or onion rings. Yes for their milkshake. Note: Do expect this place to have long line up all time.

Keith H.

Yelp
In 1976 I landed in Calgary and the first place we ate was Peter's. The place was next lot east and a ramshackle of a building. Most excellent burgers, fries and shakes. Very fast service with approximately six times more employees. Efficiency was the order of the day. Good meal for a good price. Now, not so much. Only three cars and it took 20 minutes. The burger and fries were both cold and the cashier was rude and unprofessional. It took 46+ years to lose me as a customer. That's not too bad. I'm going to miss them when they're gone. Al is rolling over in his grave!
google avatar

Anthony And F.

Yelp
Was in Calgary on vacation when friend who lived in the area suggested to visit this iconic institution. Milkshakes were pretty good nothing amazing. The amount of mosquitos in that area during mid July were ridiculous. Nothing the restaurant itself can do but be warned.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
Wow. Big portions! Very good value for the price! The milkshakes are awesome! Order any three flavours and get your tastebuds treated. As a quick note, there are 2 drive-through lines. Most people stick to the right side of the building and wait longer than they have to. There's also a walk-up at the front. Burgers were moist and perfectly done with all the toppings you want. The poutine is definitely something you want to share. Not official cheese curds, but the gravy is great, and the shoestring fries are nice and crispy.
google avatar

Darren J.

Yelp
Don't get to Peters' much anymore but my experience has changed with this Calgary's staple. The drive thru has two windows along with 4-5 window walk ups. Staff are very friendly and service is quick. Burgers are always marinated with their bbq sauce (not a fan myself) but love the burgers. The onion rings are tasty and the fries are decent (order the gravy as it goes nicely with fries). Finally you have the large milkshake flavours that can be mixed in literally hundreds of ways. Overall if you want old school burgers, fries and shake this is the place but be prepare to pay up to $40 to $55 for a family of four.
google avatar

Mandy M.

Yelp
Peter's Drive-In has been serving the best milkshakes in Calgary since 1962! Ever since my first trip to Calgary we have been coming to Peter's Drive-In when we are in town! Their burgers and fries are super generous and tasty! But the milkshakes are my personal favourite! They are super thick and have fresh fruit! Mom the Chocolate-Strawberry-Banana is super good! You can choose up to 3 flavours. This time we ordered a Coffee-Oreo and a Pineapple-Raspberry-Pina Colada. These chicks of pineapple were so yummy! No Calgary trip is complete without a stop at Peter's! Thanks for serving great food with great service for so many years!!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
**MY MILKSHAKE IS BETTER THAN YOURS ** Come for the milkshake and leave happy! All milkshake were thick and full of flavour ! Take this as you wish order ( mint orange or chocolate) these flavour have a Tenancy to over power any other flavour you might have in it. Burger were hot but very sloppy so get extra napkins! The fries sadly were over cooked and it was like we got served the ends of the basket. Server was friendly and fast!
google avatar

Melanie J.

Yelp
So we were told some of the best milkshakes are from here and this was THE place to go - we stopped just for the milkshakes. Well, I'm no milkshake connoisseur (my son is), but I thought it was good! My son said it was so yummy. If I could compare it to others, I'd have more feedback to give, but for the basic milkshake, I'd give it a thumbs up!
google avatar

Jasmine S.

Yelp
A MUST TRY. We were visiting Calgary and our friend took us here to try their amazing milkshakes. There is a huge crowd surrounding the restaurant and benches/picnic tables for eating. The diner has no indoor seating - it is simply a drive in. It does have a drive thru, everything seems quite original. Now onto the milkshakes: You can mix up to 2-3 ice cream flavours, they offer some unique flavours too. We ordered: Chocolate + Oreo, and my friend ordered Rootbeer. Price was very reasonable at around $5.25 ish I think. Considering some places back home charge 6-8 dollars for a milkshake that's half the size of this one, this is a deal! Definitely a must visit! We did not try their food so I cannot comment on that. We will be back when we visit again!
google avatar

Jimmy C.

Yelp
Loved coming here during our family road trip from Banff to Calgary (then over to Edmonton). The place was crowded when we were there so we had to park in a lot to left side of the restaurant. Be careful because there are a steady number of cars coming and going. Even though it was packed, the lines moved efficiently. We all ordered cheeseburgers, fries and a variety of different milkshakes. The seating areas in the front were mostly taken but luckily we found picnic tables off to the side that accommodated all 16 of us. Everyone was stuffed and thoroughly enjoyed their food. This is a throwback to old walk-up and drive-thru places from yesteryear where there's nothing fancy or gimmicky but the staff are all friendly, the service is fast and the food hits the spot! Can't wait to come back when we're in the area again.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Great food and shakes, exactly what you want from a drive in and lots of seats as well scattered outside. For the amount of customers, service was surprisingly fast.
google avatar

Ed I.

Yelp
Been coming here since the 70's. I believe it's changed ownership at least once that I know of. They serve burgers, hotdogs, onion rings, fries, shakes etc. They have a huge number of shake flavors and combinations. Just wait a while before drinking a shake and let it melt a while. The shakes are so thick, your head could cave in or pull your fillings out lol,
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Great milkshakes! They are super flavourful and not too runny or too thick. They have a bajillion flavours to choose from and there is definitely a flavour for everyone. I tried the mango (so good), vanilla, and cookies and cream. These milkshakes are great for those long hot drives and to bring for pre hiking adventures. I really love the location aesthetics - very old school kind of 60s drive-in diner without too much of the decorations. I'm a fan!
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
If you have never been here just order the milkshakes and the onion rings. If you have the milkshake made probably it will be nice and thick. You're wasting your time with everything else on the menu. The burgers haven't been great since the 1990's. Signed A Calgary Local

Don W.

Yelp
Food and quality degrading overtime, as they become more popular I feel everything is going down hill Especially milkshakes
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
This drive thru is a quick spot to grab a burger & milkshake if you want a McDonald's alternative. You can definitely tell that the food is without many preservatives, unlike other fast food chains. Every time we go I get a single burger with no onions. They give you one and a half patties with bbq sauce on them on a nice warm soft bun. It comes with ketchup & mustard and relish. The burger is good but it's disappointing that the patties aren't homemade. If they are, it sure doesn't taste like it. I would consider this burger worth $3, not $4.50. My husband always gets a banana milkshake which he says is delicious... I've never tried one though. The size is generous. We dont order the fries as they taste like deep fried frozen fries. The setting is reminiscent of growing up when the chain burger shops had drive ins. Drive through is available as well. The staff are friendly and the food is ready within 5 minutes. Overall, this is a good stop for a quick meal, but I wouldnt go out of my way to eat there unless I needed something quick. I heard that the original owners now own the one in Red Deer & that it is back to the old quality with fresh made, well structured burgers. I look forward to trying this one out.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Of course this is a must in Calgary. Best milkshakes in town. Usually a long wait but well worth it. Best item on their menu has to be the onion rings which are advertised to have no cholesterol or trans fats! The milk shakes are as thick as they can be and walk the fine line between a cup of ice cream and what can be classified as a milkshake. Burgers are filling! And the buns are so buttery. Definitely a classic place to go for a quick bite.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Finally visited Peter's again in such a long time! It's been ages since I've had their super thick milkshakes, burgers, and fries. Like how I remembered it, the line-up at Peter's was insane and we waited about 15-30 minutes in line, which isn't too bad. We opted to sit in the parking lot benches, which were poorly maintained. But that didn't bother me too much. I'm giving Peter's 4 stars mostly due to their fries and burger. The burger was a bit soggy(must be because the patty is drenched in sauce?) and the fries weren't even a little bit crispy. It's not too bad, but it wasn't all that great either. I guess for the size of the burger and portion size of the fries they give you, it's not too bad. We also ordered shakes as well, which was the best part of the whole meal. I ordered a coffee and maple walnut shake(you can combine up to 3 flavours) - and I'm definitely coming back for just that milkshake. Just wished the burger and fries were as satisfying.
google avatar

Wex P.

Yelp
Quality has gone down recently. It used to be a great place. I don't go again since the prices have gone up, sizes have gone down as well as the staff aren't as friendly. Not a fan anymore :S
google avatar

Lana C.

Yelp
I love Peters for their milkshakes! The only place where I can get a decent banana milkshake for sure! They have a good picnic bench area to eat at in the summer and fall and a few benches under the shelter where you order. I would definitely go and walk up as the drive through can take ages. Gets super packed in the summer. Great range of flavours and their burgers are tasty but don't always look great. The price of the milkshake is good for the size and the price for the food is a little more but still not crazy. Their fries are ok nothing special. Over all Peters is a great place to come and try some wacky milkshake flavours!

Mike A.

Yelp
Classic landmark in yyc. Best seasoned fries.

Yelp
Now this is a great burger!!! Tastes like in n out burger for sure!! Canadaians know how to copy great American fast food chains. Meat taste so good you can tell it's not GMO like American-made but a burger taste like in and out burger.
google avatar

Ann C.

Yelp
When I first came to Calgary. All my friends were hyping this place up. Saying it's the best burger joint. So of course I'm going to try it. I got a double with everything on it and onion rings. Onion rings were pretty good. No complaints there. But.... First bite I took on my burger, it was messy. I didn't bother to look what sauce they put on the burger; but I did not like it at all. It was like they but all the condiment you can name on that burger. I tasted ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, vinegar, and relish My bun was super soggy and drenched in the sauces. After 2 bite I was done after that. I couldn't finish the burger. It was falling apart sauce was dripping all over. I'm giving them a 3 star because I do really like their fresh banana milkshake. It's really good and freshness of the banana. I will come here again for the banana milkshake only.
google avatar

Pat K.

Yelp
What a pleasant find! Having to make a quick trip from the states to the Oil-sands, only had a limited time to fuel up. I wasn't disappointed, in fact I was so impressed I made sure sure to stop back in on the way to Calgary!! Some thing to take notice , the Hamburger Buns! I have had Hamburgers all over the world , Pete's Bun takes no backseat to any bun I have ever had. Combine the Bun with a great Double Patty , and a Handmade Shack. Can you say Heaven ! I'll be back.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
A Calgary icon, Pete's is justifiably famous for their milkshakes. I'd come a get a milkshake here any time. Personal favourites are strawberry/banana, chocolate/orange, and a sleeper hit, peach/raspberry. The food is another story. Ranging from bland and average (the burgers) to an abomination (the under-cooked, soggy fries), there's not a lot going on here to write home about. The onion rings are the only exception. Stick to the milkshakes and you won't go wrong!

Kaliope E.

Yelp
This drive-in is not that great. They're famous for their milkshakes, not their burgers, and for good reason. It is fast-food, so naturally everything is pre-made (burgers and fries). BUT their burgers are just horrible. Their burgers include, a patty, cheese and a bun..that's it. No ketchup, no mustard, no relish, no tomatoes or pickles or even lettuce. The patties are not flavourful either, they just taste like meat. Their milkshakes are very good, although if you're looking for more than just a milkshake for a meal, I'd recommend Five Guys. They have amazing milkshakes, outstanding burgers and award-winning fries. Overall, not that good of food.
google avatar

Luc L.

Yelp
This place is gross, coming from Montreal, I was told this place was Amazing! Well it's not. It's bland, poor quality and overpriced. At first I asked my wife if we went to the wrong place, sigh, we didn't. Anyhow this place needs to step up it's game as half a$$ing it on reputation will only go so far, for so long. Also shakes are suppose to be incredible...go to boogies those are real shakes...

Gael C.

Yelp
The last 2 times we ordered milkshakes from here (mango peach and coffee vanilla flavors) they were not mixed in at all. It almost seem like the milk shakes were rushed and it is disappointing since Peters' is our go to stop for milkshakes. I've had to try to salvage the coffee vanilla today as soon as I got home by mixing them manually in my kitchen with an actual spoon as all we were getting from the straw was the coffee which tasted incredibly bitter.
google avatar

Bonnie A.

Yelp
I'll just add Peter's to the list of "places you need try once, but only once". IMHO the patty was dry and the bun much too large for the patty. The portions are ridiculous, so share sides, and even share the milkshake. It's a unique place, and that's where the appeal is. Good to try once, but certainly not the best burger or shake I've had.
