Pete's Fish & Chips

I wasn't going to write a review, mainly because the staff was so nice, polite, and professional. I would only recommend coming here because of the service. It pains me to write that Pete's did not live up to the hype. I kept hearing about the best fish and chips in Arizona. It really makes me wonder if people here have actually had great much less decent fish and chips. I ordered the #1 which is one piece of fish, and four shrimps with fries. When the order came out as you can see in one of the pictures attached the fish was well over cooked as was the shrimp. No malted vinegar, just their specialty sauce. I wasn't even offered tartar sauce. I gave it a bite and both the shrimp and fish were dry and tasted like cardboard. I could have bought some grocery store frozen fish sticks and it would have been better. I took the food back and they happily offered to remake the food. The second picture shows that the food on the remake was not overcooked, could possibly taste better. I was offered tartar sauce this time because their specialty sauce honestly was not at all something I would put on any food. It was disappointing. I tried the second plate of food and again the frozen fish they use tasted like the grocery store frozen food fish sticks. The same for the shrimp. I returned the food, and was again offered something else from the menu like a burger. My appetite was gone, and I didn't even ask for my money back. I'm hoping this was just a bad off day for them, but you can't have frozen processed fish and call it good fish and chips. In case some of you want to know what I'm calling good fish and chips I have also included an example of a fresh beer battered fish for you to compare.

I hate to admit that we were CATFISHED by Pete's Fish & cold 'chips' which was a huge disappointment after a long-awaited hype was built up only to be Let DOWN by unseasoned SpongeBob SquareFISH❕ It's really a shame cause location & atmosphere really looked promising until you make an honest attempt at eating the food by gaslighting yourself like maybe it's not that bad with sauces & put in some effort to try eating at least some of it so as not to waste it into the garbage. (Taught that wasting food in the trash is a sin.)

First and foremost, the fry sauce is absolute fire! However, the fish, shrimp and crab were okay. The scallops were incredibly fishy and gross. The breading is very thick and takes away from the taste of everything else. Service was great but I don’t think I would go back again.

ROAD TRIP REVIEW! My sister and I went to Mesa for a specific event and the munchies afterwards. Pete’s was not only open but had a line at the drive-through about a block long. We opted to order at the window and got one order of fish and chips to share, they were so good we easily could’ve each eaten a whole order! My sister hasn’t stopped talking about this fish since, not kidding. Fresh, fast & friendly, 10/10 would recommend!

Super affordable and delicious fish and chips. I loved the school fish and have always went on Friday’s as if that’s the only day to get fish just to find the best. I’ve found really great ones. This one is simple, crunchy, delicious and affordable. Not complicated. Order 1-5 pieces of crunchy fried fish that comes with a side of fries. This is a family owed restaurant since 1947 so they have more than enough street cred. They don’t have ketchup but have their own special red sauce. They only accept cash. I order some burgers and I order one thing of fries and one side of hot sauce for my family and they did not even put a lid on my family hot sauce so I almost had an allergic reaction.

Went to Pete’s last night. I asked for no onions, and received A LOT of onions, but even without the onions that burger was the sorriest burger I’ve ever had at this location! The burger went straight into the TRASH after the picture was taken. On top of the terrible food, the was someone blasting music on their speaker at one of the benches, which is why we took the food home. This location has entirely new staff since the last time I’ve came, and it doesn’t seem to be doing them any favors. The food is bad, the service is bad, and the atmosphere is bad. This place has become a joke. I won’t be wasting money here anymore.

To say Pete's is a nostalgic fav of mine would be an understatement. My grandparents loved it, my parents love it, I love it, and my kids now love it! My friends and I used to frequent Pete's for lunch in high school as it was just down the road a bit from Mesa High. It was also our favorite spot after a weekend of shenanigans and sand volleyball. Lots of memories here!! Ok, now that I've walked down memory lane, a few important things to note: They ONLY accept cash. There's an ATM right outside which is nice. There isn't any inside seating, it's all outside under the covered patio and is well equipped with heater lamps during the winter and I'm pretty sure a misting system in the summer. Food wise, I have ALWAYS ordered the same thing: Monster Burger with Cheese, fries and extra Pete's Sauce. Anytime I go with friends or my family, they order various other items and I have never heard a complaint about what they ordered. On a scale of 1 - 10, I can't wait to take my grandkids here one day when I have them :)

I've loved Pete's my whole life! My whole family has been coming here for years and years. In my opinion, the one in South Phoenix is the best tasting. Don't ask me why, because I just can't explain it! I've been to almost every location in Arizona. I love that this Mesa location has a drive thru. I typically get the #1 combo, which is a 4 piece shrimp, 1 piece fish, with fries and a 32 ounce drink. The Dr Pepper here hits different, in the best way possible ! The food is just crunchy deliciousness! There is alot of patio room if you want to eat outside. The employees are typically friendly whenever I come. All the food is very reasonably priced. Other great menu items: super burger, burrito, onion rings. I tried the rice crispy treat for the 1st time today, and it was fantastic as well! Pete's forever!

I little disappointed. Been driving by this Mesa location for a couple years seeing all the people. Always packed. I figured, this place has to be good. Not quite sure why it's as crowded as it is. Square fish patties, really? Something you would find in the frozen food section of the grocery store. And Over cooked to almost extra crispy. Butterflied shrimp with more breading than shrimp and again darn near extra crispy. The patio seating is heated and clean so that was pleasant. But this just could be me. I still "suggest" going for yourself and make up your own mind. For me I won't be coming back.

We usually love Pete's and this location is typically pretty good. The last two times the food was not up to par. The first time the food was burnt, and this last time our food was heavily salted. To the point it was not edible. They refused to give us a refund. Which is unacceptable we could not eat the food. It's a shame because this was our favorite place.

First time at Pete's, and from what other people have said, it used to be much better a decade ago. What wasn't better a decade ago?! I thought the food was pretty good. Not bad, not great. It's basically a step up from fast food. The red sauce they give you taste like a thick tomato juice, and is rather bland. They have some other sauce that is kind of a tartar sauce and cost extra. It would be better if they just had regular ketchup and tartar sauce. The people working there were very nice. The neighborhood it's in is a little sketchy. Overall decent little place.

Really favorable place to get good eats. They had the same menu for a long time,cash only, I've been coming here since the 90s. Can't go wrong with Pete's man, you dig?

Service was great! Food was just a frozen and gross oil was dirty and the cocktail sauce was watered down but the fry sauce was good. I won't be going again. I don't understand why they won't accept credit cards or debit cards. It's called convenience for the customer again I won't be going there again.

So crispy and delicious! I've loved Pete's since I was a kid and they made my night tonight. Always such friendly staff even if there can be a bit of a wait, obviously people love them!

Arizona staple for sure, if you haven't eaten here, you've certainly heard of it! I've been frequenting Pete's ever since I was a kid. My grandfather loved this place, so we would always find ourselves eating here with him. Great fast food sea food and like others have mentioned, yes it certainly was better in the past, and fries portions are significantly slimmer, but still a great spot to eat. Outside seating only with picnic style tables and cash only. Service is always quick and friendly. I always go for the #1 seafood combo which is 1 piece fish and 4 piece shrimp, with fries and a drink. Be sure to try "Casey's Awesome Fry Sauce" it's a house tartare sauce that goes great with any meal.

Did not enjoy. The seafood is really dry. Great price tho. But the fries were good. Workers were friendly and the outside restaurant was very tasty. There's no inside so u only have outside and there's no table service. It's a walk up but you'll enjoy the service if u can't find something in the menu.

Had to switch their fries for a bit due to a shortage or something but honestly still tasted just as good, if not better. All the negative comments are just expecting too much. You want a simple piece of fish with some sauce and fries? Come here. Don't come here expecting fine dining. It's classic, delicious, and cheap. Claude's also a sweet man, if you happen to catch him wandering around.

The food is delicious. The prices are very reasonable. That means a lot these days. The workers there try very hard to please the customers. We'll be back there soon.

Those who get it get it! And those who don't don't! I will never accept Pete's slander! I grew up eating Pete's on special occasions, whenever it was my dad or my nana's birthday we would go to Pete's. My dad always has at least one Pete's shirt in his closet. I have converted many a close friend and loved one to Pete's. Pete's is engrained into my being, my essence, my soul. Those who hate on Pete's for it not being high quality seafood need to manage their expectations. We are in Arizona and this is a place that only takes cash, you order at a window, and there's no indoor seating. Be for real. The square fish patty will always be crispy, the fries will always be the perfect amount of not so crispy, and the breading will always taste good. One thing I will say though is that the sauce varies by location, in my opinion though the one on 44th and Indian School has the best sauce. I love you Pete's, you are Arizona's most misunderstood establishment, but the real one's know. I hope I get to enjoy a seafood combo with a large sprite for many years to come.

Not very good at all. The fish is mediocre, I feel like long John silvers taste better. They only accept cash so that's inconvenient. Ugly building and not a good place to hang out.

I really wanted to like this place, but I didn't. The fish is in squares like fish sticks! The service was ok, and I enjoyed sitting outside in Mesa watching the Tweakers. The other issue is that they only take cash. I didn't hate it, but I won't be back.

Pete's is one of the best fish and chips You can have! I took a friend here for the first time and she loved it too, it's a place my husband showed me and I think it's a nice local spot! Everyone who has tried it truly likes this local gem. The owner is absolutely the sweetest and so helpful! I get the #1 Shrimp and fish plate that comes with 4 shrimp, 1 fish and fries! With their fancy Pete's sauce!! We are there outside, misters were nice and the owner even came out to offer us their new fresh made daily twist on tarter sauce that was great!! It's truly a must try if you like fish and chips! Only thing is they only accept CASH! So go ready with cash !!

So I've been going by this place for close to 50 years now and finally stopped today. Is it great fish and chips...no. Is it good fish and chips...yes. For the price it's even better fish and chips. Two big things to note, it's cash only and they serve pepsi products (meh).

This is not the fish and chips place of ten years ago to me. Prices are very low still though. The fish is a square filet without much taste to it. Some salt yes and the breading is consistent. It just isn't that good. The shrimp is decent. The nuggets have a little seasoning and are the most moist out of all of these. Pros. The value. Sort of for what you get and how many kids or family you could feed. But if you could afford a meal you could enjoy a lot, why not do that? Cons. It not good likely due to the cooking oil. I had a lot of indigestion after this meal. Too much oil, or not the right kind. To me it was a waste of time to go and I doubt I will be back. I hate to sound mean, but I remember when the food was good. I was so looking forward to having it again. Step up your game Pete's and please start accepting credit cards and Apple Pay. Having an ATM at your store and charging 2.50 to withdraw just feels like a racket. Like I'm being taken advantage of. I am happy to pay more for better food and modern day convenience of a using credit card, heaven forbid Apple Pay. And get a customer bathroom.

After a wonderful tour of the temple down the street, my husband, our friends and I stopped in at Pete's for lunch. This is a CASH ONLY establishment, so know that going in. There is an ATM on site, however, you will be charged a service fee by BOTH the ATM and your bank. There is outdoor only seating, and a drive through. The ordering process is quick, prices are surprisingly low, you are given a number, your number is called once all the food is ready. There are plenty of tables surrounding the building, so seating was not an issue. It was comfortable enough to sit and chat for a while before and after our meals. There is a grassy area next door and it was relaxing to watch birds fly around. (Don't feed the birds!) My husband had fish and chips and an order of onion rings. I had a cheeseburger, fries, and pink lemonade. I was so hungry and the food was so good, I neglected to take any pictures of it. I did however notice the posted signs that can be found on every column. I seriously need the sign at the top, lol. Every bite was delicious, our friends loved their meals as well. We picked up after ourselves after eating, and discarded the trash in the receptacles provided. (Refer back to the top sign that I love so much!) It was a wonderful afternoon lunch date for all of us, full of conversation, good food, and laughter, thank you! We will definitely come back again.

Awesome, no-frill experience. Not sure where the bad reviews are coming from? This is clearly marked to be a '$' place with basic food that delivers on its promises! It's 2023. First. You can get a 1PC fish and chips combo for 3.2$! Take that into account, first. For less than 7$, you will get a 2PC combo with a drink included. Second. The flavor. While the fish comes in a square shaped patties, these are definitely NOT highly processed. Minimally, at best. It's obvious the fish is flaky and tasty. It's definitely not ground fish. It's not beer battered - it's not advertised anywhere. Everything comes served with their own , really good cocktail sauce. I am personally super grateful this place exists. The fact that I can get a good one PC fish&chips portion that just about satisfies that craving for 3.2$ is above and beyond.

The price was the best thing about it. The staff was friendly and the texture of the breading for the fish was nice but after that the fish was bland. Their sauce tasted like thin ketchup. Had to pay extra for a small cup of tartar sauce, and the fries were limp.

After 22 years of living here in Arizona, I FINALLY got here and got some fish and chips and crab erred, thanks to my friend taking me since I told her I had never tried this place. VERY good, very filling, & their sauce kicks ass! This place only accepts cash so make sure to bring some when you come. Their prices are very reasonable and doable, which impressed me.

This is pretty filling and inexpensive for what you get. I ordered the #2 combo (2 fish, 7 shrimp, and fries, drink). I did get a little confused on where to order since they have a window where the food is called out and one to order, but that's a minor complaint. One other "flaw" is the need to pay cash only. I knew this beforehand, so I pulled money out from my bank, but if I didn't know this, I probably would've drove to eat somewhere else. So, it would be great if that was "updated". Other than that, good fast food restaurant.

Welp...I can say two good things about this place. The drinks were cold and the "awesome" sauce, although tasting nothing like tarter sauce, had a good flavor profile. But then they charge me $1.07 extra for the sauce even though I told them I wouldn't it and not the Pete's Sauce with my meal!!! As for Pete...I'm sure he rolled over in his grave and can't date to look at what his family has done to his legacy. From seven locations down to one...and that one sells awful frozen products and horrible fries. They apparently have taken the business model of buying the cheapest frozen product they can find on Gods green earth, and trying to pass it off as desirable. Yuck yuck and more yuck. Service was from a grumpy old guy who apparently hates being there too. Ambiance...greasy, crusty rusted tables out in the Arizona heat. Maybe an occasional power wash could get some of the bird poop and yuck of em!?! Maybe they could at least try to care about the business. Sorry Pete...my first and last visit. Ugh NOTE: This is a cash only business.

Every time I come here, they are out of something towards dinner time or there is something wrong. Today they are out of chicken. I sat in a line for 30 minutes to finally get to the speaker to order and the employee tells me after I put my order that I was unable to get the chicken because they were out. Your out of chicken 5 hours before close time? Then don't even put up a sign to alert the people ordering that you're out? Seems minuscule until it happens on 5 or 6 different occasions.

First time here.I ask at window when ordering to you have white tarter sauce,she says yes We get our order all red sauce I WALK all the way back to the front and ask for white sauce.She says 65 cents.I have money back at the car.I said forget it..Never eat here again.

Worst fish I've ever had. The fish is same patty you get at McDonald's. The shrimp are like you'd get at a cheap drive thru. They charge for tarter for the fish. The man who waited on us was rude and surly. Never going back. You can get better fish anywhere

I understand when a business is busy but when repeated then I receive not what I ordered it's super disappointing. Pete's is a place of familiarity, comfort from childhood...but not this location. I've had so many issues that I can't continuously try at this location. Every single time I've had something missing from my order. I called and told them my order was wrong, they dismissed my order and it was just awkward silence.

CASH ONLY old school drive-thru type of spot. I thoroughly enjoyed their Messy Fish Sandwich and fried shrimp. Their cod and French fries are all right, however nothing beats the pricing here in my opinion.

Okay this is not your authentic haddock or cod pub but it's damn good for fish stick style fish and chips spot. Nice long fries too, not the truncated British fare. Yes the fish is the kind in a fish sandwich composed of Pollack and maybe a dash of cod, on the rare chance that cod wound up in the catch. But for a very inexpensive quick fish and chips this is the spot. I sat outside under the misters and yes it was 103 but it felt really good. I chose to nibble my catch under the fog of the coolness . The sauce for the fish is not tartar but a mild tomato based vinegar ish sauce. Next time I'll ask for their tartar sub. Send in the substitutes! The order came out very fast and the fish and fries were piping hot! As in burn your mouth hot... and the fries were perfectly seasoned not too much salt. Hey I know how to shake a salt shaker by now, food critiques. I will be back !

Excellent choice! Stumbled across them by accident but do glad we did! We liked it so much, we ended up going the next day! We had the fish sandwich, the fish and chips and the burger as well as the onion rings.

We are obsessed with Pete's right now! We get our food in less than 5 minutes, order has never been wrong, super cheap! We always get the best customer service! Food is always amazing and we always get extra sauce, we could practically drink it. We just wish there was one closer to us in the gilbert/ queen creek area. Anything you order from here will be amazing!

Not sure what the hype is about this place. This place tends to get a long drive thru line that wraps around the parking lot. The whole meal was mediocre - fries were soft, fried fish filet tasted like I could just heat up at home. There are tables outside - no indoor dining. I wouldn't return back here again.

Please tell me who voted this best seafood? Was excited to try it but proved to not be... Ketchup for fry's would be a starter followed by tartar sauces included with your food. Lastly, the outdoor area was nice and pleasant - but smokers abound!

Local staple, nothing fancy only cash. Definitely get a frozen snickers to round out your meal. My favorite is the Pete's Messy Fish sandwich with cheese, or the crab fingers. Always get a couple extra sides of their red sauce.

I went to Pete's Fish and Chips recently and had an exceptional experience not only was the food divine in every way possible but the staff was so welcoming and friendly, a guy named ryder helped me at the front window and he was so nice I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he ends up as governor of Arizona one day !

I was hungry for some lunch on my way to an appointment so I stopped in to get a quick bite to eat. Sadly we ordered a cheese burger and burrito combo from a fish and chips restaurant and I was stupid to do so. The cheeseburger was actually good a tender meat party that had way too much mustard on it. The fries tasted like fish and the burrito was a Costco frozen food .35 cent bean burrito dropped into the fish deep fryer it was absolutely disgusting I wouldn't even feed it to my two dogs. They tried passing ketsup off as salsa that was watered down yuck! The owner isn't doing anyone justice by keeping the frozen burritos on the menu I won't be eating there again and I suggest nobody should.

Oh my gosh! This is such a good stop. They are so organized getting the orders out, the food is super hot and fresh, and the prices phenomenal for the value. The fish patties aren't artistic, just flat squares, but there is no fishy taste, and the Panko style breading is super crunchy. The fries are hot and not greasy The shrimp and scallops are good, but my money is on the fish. No fancy sauces- you get Pete's sauce, that's it. Generous sized soft drink options, great kid's menu, all carry out to your car or their picnic tables. Busy at dinner time but not a terrible wait, so it is worth it. On Fridays during Lent, the crowd is crazy busy. Lots of parking, has a drive thru, and cash only, but there's an ATM on site. Love this place!

Pete's Fish & Chips does it for me again!! When I've got a hankering for deep fried square fish, shrimp, burger, and now chicken fingers- I come here! This is the original Pete's!! My wife took me here for my birthday because let's face it, I've already been everywhere else! When arriving in the valley twenty years ago, Pete's Fish and Chips was the first place someone recommended I try. It's for everyone! If you're well to do or just afraid of the dark-just stay in your car and use the drive thru! This trip was special. I tried some of everything! I ordered the shrimp, messy fish sandwich, double monster burger with cheese. Pete's sauce is the go to condiment of choice and the shrimp were crispy and tender. The fish was moist and flaky with a tasty breaded seasoning. My wife had me try the chicken fingers. Flaky, moist and tender surrounded by a breading I've never noticed before. WHAT THE HECK??? These were better than anywhere else! I ordered more to take home and share!! One bite of the messy fish sandwich with the combination of Pete's sauce with fresh coleslaw on top was tremendously satisfying. A chomp into the double monster cheeseburger with onions, pickles, and mustard on top had me scratching my head: All this meat and flavor in a $4 burger?? How do they do it? It's now my new - old- new favorite again! ***Don't forget to bring cash!!***

Pizza, fish and chips used to be the best place on earth to get fish and chips. They change their fish and it is not good at all. The service is fine if they were serving better fish. Ambience of the places outside covered seating. In the past, only giving us five last time we went, we were completely. Disappointment

Yes I definitely recommend Pete's amazing food it's always fresh and hot. Price's are good too.

I know this is a Mesa relic and a beloved lunch spot but I was NOT impressed. The chicken nuggets are mealy and disgusting. Weird flavor AND texture. The fries were way over cooked and mostly brown. My soda cup was all sticky. The fish was surprisingly decent, flakey and light. I didn't try the shrimp, but my daughter who normally LOVES shrimp only ate one or two so I'm assuming it wasn't spectacular. We were all hungry an hour later because we all didn't eat much of our food. I bought extra sauce because normally I'm a big sauce fan. However most of our sauce went to waste. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I was disappointed they don't serve onion rings on Fridays. If I'm going to eat something deep fried, all I really want is some onion rings. So that was a big bummer. But it's safe to say I will not be back for them. The service was good, no complaints there. But the food was NOT good.

I have been eating F&C for over 60 years. This is the worst ever. No Cod, No Malt Vinegar, no salt, no forks - eat with your fingers = bad enough, but no hand sanitizer either. Dry breading, no batter fried option. I am totally amazed at the good ratings. Their loyal customers obviously don't know what real English Fish and chips are. Glad they have a successful family business and personally glad for the experience, but I will never return.

I normally love Beer Batter fish and chips. Finally my daughter took me to Pete's. My first and last trip. I don't understand what all the hype is about. No tarter sauce, no malt vinegar, cold French fries, no ketchup and for takeout the food is thrown on a styrofoam plate and put in a bag. Even the cheapest fast food puts an ordered in a covered container. The only plus was the mini cup of coleslaw was great as was the fried onions. I wish we had read the reviews first. We all live and learn. I know , many people love pete's and I and I think that is true loyalty. Everyone has their own taste.
