My review of this hotel is based first and foremost on my personal priorities. The location is very good and feels safe. The French-style interior is absolutely beautiful. Some people mention the creaking floors or sound carrying between rooms, but I see it as part of the charm and authenticity of an old-style hotel, so it didn’t bother me at all. I also don’t mind that the reception and breakfast area serve two sister hotels—I think that’s perfectly fine. What I really want to highlight is the staff: their work and attitude are truly outstanding. I am especially grateful to the reception team, whose main goal is to make the guest’s stay as comfortable as possible. That is such a rare quality, and I appreciate it deeply. The deposit was quite reasonable, and they were incredibly accommodating with every request. This made me feel so warmly welcomed—thank you so much! 🙏🏻 Another lovely detail that added so much charm were the wonderful bath and body products. I will never forget the moment I arrived in San Francisco after a long and chilly journey—being greeted by the incredible scents of the LATHER toiletries was just unforgettable. It felt like such a special, luxurious touch that made me feel instantly revived and cared for. I also want to mention the breakfast: yes, there were eggs, along with delicious French pastries, yogurt, granola, porridge, and drinks—everything you might need to start the day. And the fireplaces in the lounge area add such a cozy, special atmosphere, which feels unique for San Francisco. Overall, I truly enjoyed my stay here and sincerely wish your hotel continued prosperity!

We absolutely loved Petite Auberge! Definitely gives European vibes which we adored. We stayed in a large king room with a fireplace. The bed was so comfortable and the room very lovely. Walking distance to the Powell St Station where you can get anywhere in the city. Many little bars and restaurants nearby as well as a delightful grocer across the street. The hotel offered complimentary water, seltzer coffee and tea at all times and a nice simple breakfast in the morning to get you going for the day. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We simply cannot wait to come back!

A charming hotel in a convenient and central location for visiting San Francisco. The room was small but had a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. The room and building were clean. The staff were extremely kind; upon arrival, they gave us plenty of tips for exploring the city and where to eat. From 5 to 6 pm, there was an aperitif with wine and cheese in the hotel lounge on large sofas in front of the fireplace—a much-appreciated treat. If I were to return to San Francisco, I would definitely choose this hotel.

We stayed here one night in July... Yes, I'm just getting around to reviewing in September! I don't recall the room number, but it was downstairs from the street. You'd think it was a basement, but because of the hill it really wasn't. The neighborhood is a bit rough around the edges... probably not unlike most big cities but not someplace I was real comfortable walking around at night. The room was comfortable enough. There was one problem with the door... The deadbolt wouldn't latch! Turned out the strike plate had a screw loose. Not a huge deal, but a sign of poor maintenance. Be aware, the staff are at the hotel next door, which is also where breakfast is served. The staff is friendly and helpful, but not necessarily immediately available. I remember breakfast as being okay, but not spectacular. One thing I found quite disturbing was an extension cord running out of the side of an electrical outlet behind the bed. It's a very clear violation of the electrical code, a fire hazard, and simply a bad idea. If they'll do that, what else have they done?

Wonderful, quirky boutique hotel. Enjoyed the room (size just right for a solo traveler) and the updated bathroom (shower, sink, room fan and toilet) were a surprise. The neighborhood was a little sketchy (hobos, junkies and crazies on the street), but I felt safe during daylight and dusk hours. Breakfast next door really added to the European vibe.

Google
Sharing honest feedback here. Beautiful, clean and classy room and hotel overall. Authentic French style decor which was really beautiful. Wonderful ambience in dining room. Friendly and co-operative staff who allow you to store your luggage even without checking in the room. Great location. For the price, the room could have been a little bigger and breakfast could have been slightly better with more hot dishes. They have Nibble and Wine in the evenings but it was practically impossible to attend since you are busy outside exploring different places.

Google
Wonderful staff who helped to make our visit to San Francisco more special by providing us with recommendations, from apps for purchasing tickets for public transport, to the best routes to walk to get to where we needed to be, restaurants, and things to do. Always very friendly and approachable, which made our stay feel more personal than we've experienced in large hotel chains. The rooms were also clean and the bed very comfortable.

Google
Such a lovely little boutique hotel close to The SF Masonic. Our room was large with a window seat, lots of natural light, and a lovely, romantic fireplace. There was also a pull-out couch, so if we have the kids along next time, there is a place for them to stay. The bed was cushy and super lux with excellent pillows. Lots of old-world charm for sure, which is right up our alley. The staff was super nice at every point in our stay -- we lacked for nothing! The complimentary breakfast was more than sufficient, including my husband's steel-cut oatmeal, a staple for him in the morning. Coffee and tea are available all day, plus sodas and water for taking on all our adventures. This hotel is making me wish we were attending another concert at the Masonic, just so we can stay there again!

Yelp
Terrible Stay! The actual condition of the room was nothing like the photos; it was very dark and stifling. There were two bugs in the bathroom, and the towels were torn and old. When we tried to address the problem, the manager were unresponsive. I do not recommend this hotel.

Yelp
This B&B was an affordable and cozy stay, with much more charm than your standard corporate hotel. We loved the vintage elevator, the fireplace in our queen room, and the comfy seating areas and courtyard. While covid isn't quite over, we were able to enjoy the afternoon wine and snacks, and a filling breakfast with hard-boiled eggs, pastries, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sodas, sparking water, and bottled water are available all day. Minor note -- Wine and food is served only at their sister property, White Swan, two doors down. It only takes a few seconds to get there, but it's not right there in your own building. Sometimes there is no one at the front desk of Petite Auberge, but you can call/text them or walk over to White Swan for service. Don't forget to factor in $58 for parking. Not my favorite, but with all the car break-ins happening in SF now, we didn't want to risk overnight street parking. Our entire stay including parking was still right around $200 including breakfast for two, so it seemed like a decent deal overall. We were able to walk to Chinatown, North Beach, Union Square, and the Westfield shopping center on Market. Cable car line is within a few blocks and you can ride it down to Fisherman's Wharf. There's a yummy Korean taco/burrito place on the same block (Tacorea) -- great for a quick bite!

Yelp
Have stolen nearly $500 from me and are refusing to respond to my messages. I stayed for 2 nights for $366. They asked for my credit card for security, and ended up charging my $495 extra. Instead of responding to me messages, they send me surveys. Worst customer service ever.

Yelp
We stayed for a total of 3 nights and it was very wonderful, the staff was very friendly from the beginning till the end. Breakfast was simple, but enough to get you through the day. They let you know to pick your seat and constantly do their best to restock what's gone. We tried wine on our last night, and the waiter was also very nice. The room itself was nice, we stayed in a queen room with fireplace and we had a lot of space to walk through. It was very nice and cozy. Valet was a little pricey but I honestly have rather paid that than wonder and stress over parking and parking signs lol thank you so much for everything. We loved everything! Ps - breakfast is different everyday

Yelp
Overall the customer service was good. Charm, decor, and amenities were all as expected and described. Very friendly and kind front desk staff at both the White Swan (where I had to check in as no was at the front desk of Petite Auberge) and Petite Auberge where I checked out. This review is more of a warning to others and to improve the staff. I was in need of a last minute unexpected quick overnight place so I can't speak to a longer stay. The few things that cause some misgivings about staying again are: 1. The front desk had accidentally booked me into an occupied room. However, it was an understandable mistake as it was the same room number I was to be booked into, just at the other hotel. The staff member was very apologetic and knew the mistake before I returned to the front desk and provided excellent service. 2. I had a room in one of the upper floors and it was very warm even with the windows open. Outside temp. was in the 70s. The thermostat didn't seem to work for cool air and a portable fan/heater would only produced hot air. I did overhear another guest mention something about a fan at the White Swan, so its possible fans may be available, which would be a must for a longer stay during a warmer climate. 3. I found a stray, what appeared to be clean, sock in my bag that did not belonging to me. Now this isn't bothersome in itself, but like I had the private sign on my door overnight. So this means that someone accessed my room despite the privacy sign and went through my belongings. I am a very detail oriented individual, so I know this stray sock was not something that I packed. Although this seemed to be a simple prank, it is unnerving to know that someone at the hotel accessed my room when asked not to and went through my belongings. So as much as I want to recommend this small and charming hotel, be cautious.

Yelp
My husband and I celebrated our early Valentine's Day. The place was beautifully decorated . It gave us an out of the ordinary and cozy feeling. Every where you look there is art that triggers your emotions. The complimentary breakfast and wine gave my husband and I a chance to relax, to talk about old memories and to make new ones. Cody, the Supervisor and two wonderful ladies gave us excellent service. We had so much fun!

Yelp
The manager Louis helped to rectify the issue the following day. He did take accountability for his team, and helped accommodate and compd the night of the incident off the bill. Still unbelievable how the incident happened but I did appreciate Louis' sincere understanding and help to make things right. Our stay outside of this incident was great, updating to 3/5 stars, the comforter situation really put a bad taste in my mouth but yeah the stay overall was great up until then.

Yelp
Nice idea of a hotel in lower Nob Hill. However, so much can be improved upon. Rooms need better soundproofing. Decor needs to have a unifying theme. I thought it was suppose to be French provincial. It was more like a hodgepodge of garage sale finds. Wallpaper, carpet and fabric patterns were a bit too un-complementary. The food also needs work. We were awoken at 4am by a very loud conversation our next door neighbor had. People also ran along the hallway at that time. In addition, the occupant above us could kept moving around and dropping items on the floor, for almost an hour! The free breakfast was awful. Stay away. The only good thing about it was it came free with the room price. Bottled water was free as well. The staff was very friendly. The front desk was never staffed during our stay here. We had to walk two doors down to The White Swan to check-in and out. If you stay on the top floor and cross your fingers that you don't have a loud neighbor, maybe you will have a more pleasant stay than we did.

Yelp
Enjoyed a 3-night stay at this quaint boutique hotel. Was greeted with kind service upon arrival. The hotel is older but has tons of character. Bed was very comfortable. Complimentary water/soda plus continental breakfast each morning is a nice touch. The location is fairly safe though I wouldn't walk alone at night in the area. Many great restaurants within walking distance.

Yelp
Ok it's been a hot minute since I yelp sorry folks..life gets in my way. So this little hidden gem in San Francisco popped into my radar when needing a overnight stop after dinner in the city. Well what can I say. First the service 10+ STARS. The hotel is like a Victorian style, lots of cozy seating areas, free tea and coffee ,soda, water. Little quite garden seats as well. Each room is slightly different. Our room was a queen bed,and fireplace. Very simple but so so clean. Side note no refrigerator. Bed soft and cozy. Bathroom simple but clean and accommodating. We were on 1st floor check in is 2nd and street level. There is breakfast included next door at the white swain their sister hotel which was just as amazing. The elevators are super cool and very old-fashioned. Parking you can self park down the block 40.per night or valet for 65.00 which was yet again fantastic. Keep in mind anyone who has been to San Francisco it's busy and unique ,colorful and exciting. The rooms rate was very good on bookings.com or call Christine at front desk she was the best ever. As you know it's rare for a 5 star from me but they earned it plus.we will be back

Yelp
Super cozy and welcoming romantic French boutique with a B&B vibe. Great location and accommodations, early evening reception and prepared breakfast included. Each of the 26 rooms are decorated in Frenchish style and have a gas burning fireplace. The Halls are small and the walls aren't soundproof but that's to be expected. There's a family room off of the kitchen with a fireplace, boardgames, 24/7 hot coffee and tea, and a small fridge stocked with bottled water and soda aplenty. A couple of issues: we arrived about 11pm on a Saturday night, literally the last room available. Upon check-in, we were given the wrong room number... Twice. Not sure what was going on there but grateful the key didn't work while we attempted to enter another guest room! Parking is a pain. We bought a spot around the corner through a parking app for about $15/night and hoofed it up the hill after taking our luggage to the room. The positive far outshines the negative, all in all a wonderful stay. Will DEFINITELY come again!

Yelp
I had very mixed feelings on my experience here! I think we would've had a different experience if it wasn't covid, because we could tell so many things weren't happening that normally would be. I also want to start by saying that if we needed or wanted anything, we had to leave our hotel and go to the hotel next door (White Swan). There was no staff or service at Petite Auberge. I think the best way to lay out this review is in a list of pros and cons. Pros: - really lovely happy hour from 5-7pm everyday where they serve (free) wine and snacks in their beautiful common area, which has couches, fire places, and all kinds of fun art - the room we got was HUGE! - some rooms have fire places - bathroom was huge! - free breakfast and coffee served all day - right above Del Popolo which is a great restaurant! - room comes with 2 really comfy robes - super cute and cozy - room had great view of the street and city Cons: - it's clear they were severely understaffed and stretched very thin. - inconsistent service (one day they brought us ice when we called, the next day they told us they weren't allowed to deliver ice? another example: happy hour the first day they offered cheese and crackers, the next day they said they were out of everything. the first morning for breakfast, they offered cream cheese with our bagels and the second day they said they were out. - the front desk phone is rarely answered. there were times when we had to call 4 times to get someone on the phone from our rooms - the coffee was empty every time we went down for breakfast - they advertised coffee and tea served all day but there was no tea or hot water to serve yourself - you can hear EVERYTHING from the rooms. we couldn't sleep very much because we could hear people walking up and down the stair case and talking almost all night - we got the Romance Package which basically charged us an additional $50 for an average bottle of champaign and some store bought chocolates. DO NOT get this package, it offers no value. - breakfast was NOT as advertised. if you look at the other pictures from this business and on their website, you can see beautiful breakfast spreads. that was not the case. we got a plain bagel barely toasted at all, yogurt, and bananas. also, it took over 25 minutes for them to bring us water. I also just want to end by saying that it was mine and my partner's 4 year anniversary and we called multiple times ahead to let them know that this would be a special one. We asked if they could do anything special for our stay there... and they said they would "see what they could do." They did nothing. It was disappointing.

Yelp
We stayed here from Friday morning until Sunday noon, it was such a great price!! Although the hotel & the decor were definitely outdated, the room is ideal for those who are not planning to stay in their room for most of the time. The restroom was also really small, but again for the price & especially the LOCATION it was a great stay. The hotel is literally in the middle of everything so there's a lot of cool local spots a few minutes away. Parking was a bit frustrating, the hotel charges $50 & the nearby garages range..we paid $42 for the first night & luckily we found free parking a few blocks down for the following night. But again it's dt SF so not surprised. The staff were extremely nice & helpful! The hotel offered breakfast & wine during specific time frames, although we did not make it to either it was still really cool they offer that while taking proper covid precautions! As someone who was out exploring 90% of the time, I would definitely stay here again while visiting SF!!

Yelp
I would love to give this little hotel more stars but just can't. The good features are that the staff is nice and cleanliness is probably at a 4. Unfortunately it rates much lower due to following issues; bathroom door latch doesn't work, shower hot water is on a timer for 1 minute. The shower light is also on 1 minute timer. The bed was very soft and lumpy. If your room is next to the antique elevator you hear Pretty constant rumbling. You can hear the folks in the room above showering, tv noice and then snoring. If you use the valet parking it can take up to 1/2 hour to get your car. If you don't mind the negatives. Union Square is just a short walk away.

Yelp
I've stayed here a couple times when I had business in the city. I really liked the spot and the staff. The hotel is quaint. It is not a great set-up for business travel if you will be working in the room much but otherwise solid. The breakfast is nice and I enjoyed lingering in the early evening and chatting with other travelers. Both times I was here I spent an hour or so chatting with folks from all over the world. Very nice.

Yelp
Adorable, charming French countryside boutique hotel located in Nob Hill. Staff was helpful and friendly when I arrived. I checked in at the White Swan next door and was escorted to my room. The elevator was so so cool-1900's. Room was adorable, updated bathroom and very comfortable bed. I loved the cocktail reception with wine and appetizers in the cozy fireplace room. Breakfast was very well done and tasted great. I loved the quiche and pastries. This place was a hidden gem and I was pleasantly surprised! I will be back

Yelp
My wife and I have been coming here since 1997. We have enjoyed many occasions including our kids birthdays. As someone who has enjoyed multiple decades this special place has something for everyone. We come a few times a year to this charming kept-secret of San Francisco to enjoy all it has to offer and the amazing staff of Petite Auberge

Yelp
Very cute and cozy. Free very good coffee, tea, and cookies all day. Complimentary breakfast and wine hour with hors d'œuvres. Reasonable price. Couches, fireplaces, old school wall paper, outdoor spaces to hang out. Love it!

Yelp
I LOVE this little hotel, tucked away and almost hidden on a fairly busy SF street. Like a lot of people have said about this place on Yelp, the Petite Auberge definitely has a quaint, romantic vibe to it. It's like staying in a French country inn. I'm sad to say that I only stayed here for only one night, but the next time I visit SF, I will definitely stay here again. Here's why I love the place: 1) Complimentary fresh-baked cookies and water (usually infused with fruit). There are also complimentary sodas and bottles of water available to guests. 2) A beautiful, warm lounge area under the lobby that looks straight like a living room. It's cozy and quiet--ideal for someone who wants to get some work done or play one of the many board games available on a nearby fireplace. 3) The staff is so friendly! There was an older Chinese gentleman who was particularly accommodating and welcoming. 4) The rooms are nice and airy, and I love the bathroom. Quality sinks and showers are important to me wherever I travel, and I wasn't disappointed with what the Petite Auberge had. The water pressure in the shower is an improvement from most places I've visited, and I liked their exfoliating soap. 5) I know it sounds odd, but I love the old-fashioned elevator that this place has. It contributes to the ambiance of being in a French country inn from the 1920s, and I've never seen anything like it! 6) C o m p l i m e n t a r y b r e a k f a s t.

Yelp
This place is adorable. I stumbled upon it when booking work travel to SF, as the usual hotel I book was unavailable. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I ended up pretty happy with my choice. It's definitely a quaint hotel; as my colleage put it, "This is definitely not the Hilton!" The rooms are decorated such that you feel you've time-traveled into 1910s France, and I personally loved everything about that. My room also had a fireplace which, while not a necessity, was pretty nice to have. The hotel provides breakfast in the mornings and I believe they also have a wine reception in the early evening, although I missed that both nights. The breakfast was pretty decent, and it's nice that they have self-serve coffee as well as a fridge of soda and water for their guests. And cookies in the lobby! The drawbacks were that the TV was kind of hard to figure out (but not a huge deal) and the elevator is... old. It's really cute but I'm not sure it's truly accessible if someone needed to use it with a wheelchair or anything like that. I also had to check in next door for some reason, which wasn't a major problem, but unexpected when I arrived. Oh, and it's NOT cheap, but lodging in San Francisco rarely is!

Yelp
Love love love love love this place. Definitely staying here on every future SF visit. It was super clean and cozy. Our room had a fire place! and they provide a really great free breakfast every morning. Only complaint is that we really needed a rollaway bed and there was definitely space for it in our room. I called the front desk to ask if they offered them and I was told yes. And then I called again later to request one and I was told that our room was too small. Definitely not the case! But it's okay, we managed.

Yelp
One of the cutest little boutique hotels in San Fran area. Prime location, clean, friendly and fast service Each room has a character that is accented with a fireplace. A good mix of international people who enjoy old French settings. The happy hour is offered in a cozy living room with fire and wine! If you are looking to enjoy your stay unconditionally, give this place a chance

Yelp
This boutique hotel is wonderful! My husband and I spent our third Anniversary there Dec. 2018. The room we had was beautiful (with a fireplace) and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Lovely people. Clean rooms. Blocks away from Nob Hill, Union Square, market Street. Quiet and truly accommodating. The breakfast is an actual breakfast!! With eggs and sausage, oatmeal, homemade bread, huge bowl of fresh fruit, and really good coffee. Tea and coffee available all day plus a nice little cocktail hour at 5 o'clock. Rooms are compact but the bed is very nice, comfortable shower products are good quality, and the furniture is quaint Above all the people are super nice that run the hotel, along with the White Swan Inn. There are some repairs going on now (winter 2018) but they do very very well at working around it and keeping everything very clean. I would highly recommend it for a stay in San Francisco

Yelp
Really enjoyed my stay at Petite Auberge! I was here for 5 days, Sunday through Thursday for work. Most guests in the hotel seem to be tourists but honestly, it's a great spot if you're in town for a while for business too! Every morning I'd grab a good breakfast and a coffee cup to go. They had water bottles available around the clock which is really convenient. Then after work, there would be a solid hors d'oeuvres hour which was really relaxing after the day. The parlour room is so cute and relaxing with the fire going. All of the staff were helpful and available. The room itself was very clean! When I first got there I got this nervous feeling because you see an old hotel, and even though that's what I signed up for, you start to be scared of what dirty things you'll find. But it was totally very clean! The bathroom even seemed maybe newishly redone and was cleaner than many big resort hotels I've stayed in. Bed was pretty comfy. Nothing special but I'm picky and mine was soft and I slept just fine. My only complaints: the TV was a bit hard to get working at first and the cable box in the back wasn't attached and fell on me. And when I first got there, it was 10pm and all the windows had been left open so the room was freezing. The heater didn't work but the bell boy brought me a space heater that warmed the room up really well. Neither of those things affected or tarnished my stay so I didn't knock it down much but if that stuff matters to you, it's good to note or check on when you get into your room. The phone also had issues as well. Overall, this hotel was just much more comfortable and homey than a big one would have been for a long work stay and I wouldn't hesitate to come back again, though I think I got a good price for off season and not sure if it will continue to fit the budget.

Yelp
This cute boutique hotel is truly a special place in every way! I can't express in words the wonderful customer service and hospitality we were shown the moment we walked into the hotel. We were greeted immediately by "Leon", he took our bags to our room, he made sure we had bottled water, he prepared our room for us so that our room was nice and cozy, and the fireplace was glowing. He was our valet driver too and he was soo happy and positive...it was so nice to see that he truly loved his job and it reflected in how he treated guests! The front desk was very welcoming, even down to the maids, who were smiling as well. We felt like royalty! The room was cozy, eclectic and charming. The bed was too soft for our taste, that's the only downfall, but other than that everything was perfect!! Seriously!!! A full breakfast buffet is offered starting at 8 a.m. includes: scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits, toast, fresh cut fruit, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, and coffee bar. There is nightly appetizers at 5pm. Check in is at 3pm, check out is at 12:00. It is only a few blocks from any type of eatery you can imagine and high end shopping, Chinatown and more! We will always remember the this cute affordable hotel, recommend it to friends and remember it for future San Francisco getaways. Thank you Petite Auberge.

Yelp
I spent 2 nights here with my sister. We had a room with a gas fireplace and queen bed. Each morning a full a tasty breakfast was provided buffet style. All was fresh. I didn't eat pasties but noticed others enjoyed them. I ate the fresh fruit and was surprised that the fruit was sweet and ripe. A quick was offered as well as other breakfast meats. Yogurt and oatmeal was available as well. In the evening wine was offered with nice light offerings. Cheese tray one night and a Greek platter the next with a little sweet. Because of this we only had to eat one meal out. The staff was super accommodating and helpful and friendly. There is an old fashion elevator. An elderly person might have a bit of trouble. However I'm sure a staff member would assist. The stairs are steep and I did slip down once. So watch for that. Wonderful experience in a boutique hotel. Small cozy room was pleasant.

Yelp
I stayed here one night when I had no where to go (it's a sad story...) When I made my entrance late that night and they saw the sorry look upon my face, they were very kind and sweet. They also gave me a good rate, since there was availability and it was a weeknight (S-Th.) My room was tiny. I mean minuscule. Don't come here expecting a nice, roomy place. You nearly have to climb over the bed to get to the bathroom. The armoire took up half the room. But other rooms are much bigger, I'm sure. There isn't a lot in the room, although they give you some of the basic amenities. But for a Bed and Breakfast in "big" city like SF, they do a pretty nice job of making it as quaint and charming as it can be. The decor is feminine and pretty, and the hotel itself is elegant and unpretentious. All in all, a lovely stay. (Prices tend to run a bit high, in my opinion. But it's not unusual for decent rooms in SF to cost-on average-a couple hundred dollars a night, from my experience.)

Yelp
Hands down the best hotel I've ever stayed at (and I've stayed at quite a few)! Hubby and I were here for a glorious eight days in January. I will plan another trip to San Francisco in the near future for the express purpose of staying here again. How do I love Petit Auberge? Let me count the ways: 1. Out of this world free breakfast including artisan breads, scratch-made oatmeal, and quiche 2. Right in the heart of town on Nob Hill near Chinatown and 10 minutes walk from downtown 3. Free wine and hors d'oeuvres reception every evening from 5pm to 6:30pm, complete with interesting people from around the world 4. Unique, French country interior decorating 5. Extra comfortable bed and a cosy seating area. Oh - and bookshelves with actual books to read! 6. Friendly staff who go out of their way to be helpful. Yelp
Going on my third night at this quaint inn near Union Square. The rooms are perfect, great antiques, fireplace, cozy, clean. The staff has accommodated our every request: off street room, extra towels, wine opener. They even had a bottle of wine waiting for us on my wife's birthday night. There are many excellent restaurants within blocks. I don't want to leave.

Yelp
HITS: (1) LOCATION: You can't beat this location. This charming Bed and Breakfast is located on the quiet, tranquil, dignified Nob Hill, blocks away from the hustle and bustle of the Union Square and Chinatown. It is, however, still within walking distance to these must-go destinations for travellers from all over the world. Which is hugely important if you're a first-time visitor to this lovely city of San Francisco. It is very convenient and centrally located, within walking distance to cable car, bus stops (MUNI), and BART. A perfect spot to begin your adventure around the city. Within your walkable radius: Hayes Valley, City Hall, Tenderloin, Nob Hill, Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Embarcadero, South of Market, Telegraph Hill, and more... (2) DÉCOR: This is also an ideal, dream-come-true kind of place for B&B fans. The decoration is absolutely charming and divine. French country style. Incredibly cozy, comfy, noble and gracious. See my pictures - they speak better than I do. In my opinion: it's full of unique character and it's breathtakingly beautiful. Its next-door neighbor, the White Swan Inn (also operated by Joie de Vivre), is equally beautiful, if not more. Petite Auberge is French style while the White Swan is old fashioned English style. Both are quaint and visually stunning. A feast for the eyes! MISSES: (1) WARMTH: Despite its impeccable cleanliness and beauty, it lacks a certain sense of warmth, intimacy and humanness... Compare to traditional B&Bs, the atmosphere here is not very welcoming and inviting. Front desk is often empty. Often, no one is there to say "hello" to you, chat with you or get you acquainted with the local areas. As it's commercially operated by Joie de Vivre, don't expect to be greeted by your typical smiley, hospitable, housewifey or grandpa-like innkeeper in traditional B&Bs. (2) FOOD: I'm also not a big fan of its breakfast. Don't expect delicious, home-cooked, family-style hot breakfast. The breakfast venue, though beautiful, somehow feels impersonal and commercialized. It could be because that, again, you would not be engaging in heart-warming conversations with the hosts or innkeepers. Servers are kinda indifferent too. Seem to see it more as a job, a chore, to be done and over with, rather than a joy and a sense of pride. The food is pretty basic and plain. Nothing memorable. $$$: Yup, definitely expensive. But if you're a first-time visitor, and have the money to spend, AND you're a B&B fan (or at least you wanna try out something different, something other than Hilton or Marriott or whatever standardized hotels there are), I'd recommend Petite Auberge more than any other B&B in this city. Location alone is worth it. It'd be a good start. A lovely and charming start for you... I'd definitely recommend it to my out-of-town visitors.

Yelp
Excellent service, size, and quality for a great price. We take advantage of the Joie de Vivre deals and so I picked this hotel for a Christmas stay in SF. We got the king room with fireplace. The room was large, charming, and very comfortable. The fireplace worked perfectly and kept the room warm. The bathroom is a bit small but is well appointed and clean. The service was top notch. The cleaner left fresh towels at the door, even though we opted out of room service. The breakfast buffet was tasty. There were a few selections, and not the standard fare either, so be prepared to try something new. Yes, it's noisy. That's to be expected for being on a city street very close to one of the busiest areas in San Francisco. If you want peace and quiet, stay in the country or bring really good ear plugs. It seems like the local emergency services like to blast their sirens at 4am, so best be prepared for that. One can hardly fault the hotel for it.

Yelp
We decided to use Hotwire for our sf pride trip and when we got confirmation of the hotel we didn't know what to expect. The photos of the hotel looked a bit outdated and the wall paper really was kinda gross. We had already paid for it, so we had no choice but to stay. When we got there to the front desk, we were still unsure of what to think. It wasn't until the second day of our stay when we realized what a good hotel it was. When we got to our room, it reminded me of a European hotel. We even had our own fireplace. The location was great to the BART and to all the shopping and dining. The hotel had complimentary soda and water stocked In a fridge in the hallway. The breakfast was also included with the hotel rate and the quiche was really good. Another thing they had was a complimentary happy wine hour that was in the early evening! All you can drink and free? Can't beat that! Not only was the hotel really nice so were the staff. They were very friendly and helpful with giving us directions and recommendations for places I eat. If you are looking for a fancy hotel with updated furnishings this probably isn't the place for you. However, if you're looking for a cozy hotel with great service this is the place for you. We will recommend this place to anyone who wants amazing value for their money.

Yelp
My friend and I were there for a quick, short weekend getaway before the New Year. We booked the hotel via Expedia as part of the package (booked SFO flights at the same time as booking hotel). Stayed for 2 nights in a Queen room with Fireplace. The net-tax cost came out to around $143/night (vs. website advertised price of $199/night, excluding tax). The inside of this hotel is pretty cute. It's decorated in a French country style. The room is a bit small, but every thing looks cute. The location of this hotel is also very convenient and is a very good base for tourist/visitors. It's just a couple of blocks from the cable, 4-5 blocks from Union Sq and is also still walkable from BART's Powell's station (10-15 min walk). Everyday, there's also complimentary gourmet breakfast and wine & hors d' oeuvres (in the afternoon). They also offer free WIFI, free bottles of water, can sodas, some free cookies/snacks in a jar and tea/coffee all day for all their guests. Most importantly, their staff was VERY friendly and EXTREMELY helpful. For the price that we paid and the service/amenities that we got, I was really happy with my decision to stay here. In the future, if I visit SF again, I would definitely look to stay with them (if you want to stay in a slightly higher end and slightly higher priced hotel, you can also check out their sister hotel which is 1-2 stores next to Petite Auberge. The White Swan Inn has a very cute feel to it as well, except it's decorated in a slightly higher-end looking with a British influence, rather than Petite Auberge which has more of a French Country feel to it).

Yelp
The loveliest B&B in San Fran! I stayed here for about 3 days 2 nights after graduating college, and loved how accessible it was. It was right in the middle of a bunch of interesting things in the area, or a little over $5 of an uber ride from all the San Fran attractions. Aesthetically, this hotel was really cozy, and the sort of feel you'd love to have when you're exploring a new city. I'd definitely come back here if I ever visit again. This hotel definitely had more character than other regular chain hotels. Petite Auberge also shares services with White Swan Inn, which kind of makes you feel like you're getting double your money's worth. I had breakfast there just about every morning, and was pleased with what they offered. There were comfortable seating areas on the bottom floor, with snacks -- tea, cookies, cakes -- for all during tea time. I especially appreciated the complimentary water bottles they offer! Sometimes when traveling, it's annoying to have to lug such a critical necessity, so it's great to have it provided. All in all, excellent experience, and would highly recommend this to anyone traveling on a budget.

Yelp
Spent my second anniversary here and had a lovely, albeit short, stay. The whole place is done in garden floral theme with French art adoring the walls. Bed and breakfasts should be quaint and this one definitely was. The elevator was awesome and the breakfast nook downstairs was awesome. Be sure to request the type of room you want. Not all rooms come with fireplaces or private bathrooms but luckily ours did. They also have teddy bears, which has become a tradition of ours (to purchase the one in our room on our anniversary night). The location was convenient and close to everything. I felt safe at night both in and out of the building and the staff was hospitable and talkative. Parking costs an arm and a leg - luckily we took public transit into the city so it was the least of our concern. In the evening they have wine and tasty snacks. The breakfast was good - better than some I've seen but not as good as others. The morning delivery of the Chronicle at your door was a nice touch too.

Yelp
Loved our stay here. We got the room with the fireplace. Took awhile to heat up but it was cozy and perfect. There are city noises and this is an old hotel, may not be for you high maintenance peeps. The wine and cheese reception was a nice touch and we ended up meeting a nice French couple to play some board games with. Breakfast is complimentary. There was a very nice selection. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
This is the cutest little place ever! They have a wine happy hour, little snacks, soda, etc. It's very calm and quiet. Peter is an absolute sweetheart! They were prompt and polite. They also have valet for cars. There's a fireplace in every room (I believe), and it doesn't seem to be top far from anywhere you'd like to go.

Yelp
We just stayed at this sweet little quirky Hotel in San Francisco! Super breakfast each day and small tapas plates with wine in the afternoon. The decor is Victorian, and very homey. The neighborhood is safe and close to Union Square with tons of shopping and Restaurants. The staff was super attentive! We would totally recommend and will be back!!

Yelp
It felt like I was really living inside an old Victorian home in San Francisco. Very old vintage style, elegant and beautifully decorated. It's an original classic style and definitely one of the cutest places to check out inside a boutique hotel. Bathroom was fully equipped, room was very spacious, fireplace was grand, and the window view allowed me to see the streets of San Francisco. It was old, dark, and cold in certain spots, but that's the beauty of these old homes. It felt like I had the entire house, all 5 floors to myself during the pandemic. I will certainly return for new experiences. It's two doors down from the White Swan Inn where complimentary breakfast and evening wine with snacks are served daily inside the parlor. I walked up and down the stairs everyday to get to each floor and it felt great. The old elevator works perfectly fine as well. Petite Auberge is much more private and quieter since there's not many guests or staff there, compared to White Swan Inn which felt more like a hotel. GM Louis Kimball is very detail oriented and offers excellent customer service. He's pretty much in charge of both properties. The living room, den, and dining space in the basement level was very cozy, warm, and inviting. Great place for private party eventsdefinitely enjoyed my stay and will be back soon. Thank you for staying open during these times.

Yelp
My bf surprised me with this charming French hotel, fireplace in each room. You feel like you have been transformed to France. Decorated with French detail including music playing downstairs where you have this area where breakfast is provided and tea/coffee at all times. Complimentary red and white wine offered everyday from 5pm to 7pm including apple strudel. The room itself is fairly small but super cute, the TV is hidden and in a strange angle and walls are thin, if you leave the window open, the noise from outside can be heard but it is not too bad. The breakfast include homemade eye knish, pastries, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit.

Yelp
We actually had reservations at the White Swan next door (sister hotel) but arrived a day early due to trans pacific miscalculation. They kindly found a room here for us for the night. Gorgeously retro decorated. Working gas fireplace. A bit musty smelling but the most comfortable bed and pillows I have ever encountered in a hotel- I didn't want to get out of bed! Service and breakfast were phenomenal.

Yelp
Had a lovely 2 night stay here with some friends. The staff was so friendly and helpful, the rooms were cozy and quiet and they had a fireplace! The bathrooms were clean and spacious. The complimentary breakfast was tasty, the freshly baked cookies in the afternoon were delightful, and the 24/7 tea/coffee bar was very much appreciated! This small hotel has several nice parlor areas to sit. Highly recommend it!

Yelp
I really fell in love with this little hotel. It was cozy and quaint -- super soft bed linens and bathrobes. Romantic fireplace. From free snacks and beverages, a wine reception each evening, and breakfast and coffee (great coffee, not the awful stuff you normally get on a breakfast buffet) each morning, our stay couldn't have been more perfect. Like most hotels in San Francisco, Petite Auberge is neither new nor quiet nor roomy. But I can only smile at squeaky floors and a bed that's a bit too soft when they are part of such a charming hotel. I looked forward to returning to our room each night, and I think the fireplace has spoiled me for other hotels.

Yelp
The hospitality was over the top. Leon, one of the owners, bent over backwards to make sure we had everything we needed. The breakfast and wine hour were also very nice. Overall a very charming place to stay in a great location, walking distance from almost all of the things you'd want to visit.

Yelp
Charming hotel on Nob Hill with great hospitality! The building has an Old World vibe with antiques, a cozy parlor, wine/cheese event, and cozy Euro-style rooms. We loved the proximity to everything--Nob Hill, music venues, restaurants/bars. Made for a perfect weekend getaway!

Jennifer K.

Yelp
The staff were all so sweet and helpful. Our room was the suite and perfectly clean, cozy and newly renovated. Delicious breakfast. Very comfortable mattress. And very centrally located in the city. Only complaint was that our final night the neighbors above us woke up at 3:30am and walked around for those remaining early morning hours so kept us awake as wood floor is very creaky. Not sure how to fix this and if the neighbors above us had been asleep the whole time during normal quiet hours it would have been not a problem as we slept very well the other two nights we were there. We will be back regardless, as so many other high points at this Inn.

Yelp
Great little retro boutique hotel that is kept very clean! I stayed here with my wife for only one night but all the staff we spoke with were very friendly and helpful. Our room had a nice little fireplace which made me feel right at home! Complimentary breakfast and around-the-clock free beverages (water, soda, coffee, tea) was an added plus! I didn't use the valet parking service but was able to find free street parking on Sat night when we checked in as the Nob Hill area is quiet and was not super busy. Definitely a place I recommend (this is the sister hotel to the White Swan next door) and nice to get away from your modern "tech" hotels once in a while.

Yelp
Completely delightful! It's more like a B&B than a hotel. It's in a great location- I could walk to a zillion restaurants and heard great jazz just around the corner. The breakfast and coffee were an added bonus and I congratulated myself on finding such a gem in the big city. Unfortunately, the management missed an opportunity for maintaining a happy customer. My plans changed and I needed to extend my stay one more night. When I went to the desk to inquire- they said I'd be charged the standard room rate of $189 instead of the rate I had gotten on hotel tonight- $139. For a Wednesday night. And right then...my happy feeling vanished, I went back upstairs, and found another hotel...for the same rate. So 5 stars for the happy night, and 0 for the attitude.
