With the utmost respect for Americans, it’s fair to say that coffee and pastries are not generally their strong suit—at least not by European standards. That said, this place is a rare and wonderful exception. In fact, it rivals many coffee shops you’ll find in Europe, both in quality and atmosphere. The coffee is rich and expertly crafted, the pastries are genuinely delicious, and every detail feels thoughtful. What truly sets it apart, though, is the people. Warm, welcoming, and passionate about what they do, they elevate the entire experience. This spot is a real gem—an authentic taste of European café culture, right here at home.

Google
The coffee and food is absolutely to die for. I got a basic caramel latte (hot) and it was delicious, they even give you a small pastry to go with it which was unexpected. I’m not much of a pastry girl but it was delicious. I also got the avocado toast and i would get it 1000 times over. Best avocado toast i’ve had. I would definitely recommended this place.

Google
Very spacious and open space with seating for those that wish to dine in. I got the Lorraine quiche which was heated up and was amazingly fluffy - I’m used to the more dense heavy texture so this was amazing. The chocolate croissant didn’t have much chocolate inside but surprisingly I didn’t miss it too much since the pastry itself was sweetened. The pastry is soft and you can see the air pockets and layers inside. The iced soy vanilla latte was refreshing and well balanced. Everything came out pretty quickly. Employees were very nice and patient when I couldn’t decide on what I wanted.

Google
Great customer service. Just good quality food and ingredients you can feel. Fifeville is a solid turkey sandwich the dressing they put on it is phenomenal with the Tahini herb. The hash and potatoes with the sausage was a perfect match. Not too greasy and over powering just well balanced and not doused in cheese. Perfecto! Will be back!

Google
This place was amazing. Good food and nice staff. The cafe looked really cute and was very welcoming. The only suggestion I have for them is to replace their bathroom door knob as I done find it very sanitary for a restaurant environment.

Google
Love this coffee shop! The espresso is so good. There’s a sea salt and honey latte right now which is the winter specialty drink and it it’s literally the best latte I’ve ever had. I’ve tried basically every pastry and every one is fabulous. It can get very full so go early on the weekends to avoid crowds.

Google
Very good coffee and breakfast options. Highly recommend a morning visit when in the area.

Google
Hand down superlative French bakery. Spectacular sandwiches chock full of fresh flavors. Turkey avocado arugula cheddar; ham apple-chutney frisee cheddar, both as sourdough panini. Wide variety of freshly baked goods including pretzel croissant must-try and other sweet or savory varieties. Lauren and colleague running the place are super nice and makes everyone feel welcome. Simply wonderful place.

Yelp
We absolutely adored this sweet little bakery & café one block from Charlottesville's bustling Downtown Mall. I had heard about their main location, but this one was right by our hotel, and it was the perfect place to enjoy the morning. There was a consistent line from the time we arrived (around 8:45am) until we left at 10. We were lucky to snag a table in the cozy nook area in the back with cute, colorful pillows - perfect place to read and eat! Every single pastry looked delicious - it was difficult to just pick a few (had to get some extras to bring home, of course) - we decided to split a bacon, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich on their house-made baguette (breakfast perfection - even better with a little Cholula), then we shared the Brioche Feuilletée (filled with bananas foster cream and topped with sugar & caramel drizzle - WOW), a few petit canelés (tiny and tasty), a classic pan au chocolat and raspberry petit kouign amann (saved both for later). The drip coffee was good, but the espresso was even better - I'm glad we grabbed a few cortados on our way out. I will recommend all of MariaBette's locations to anyone going to Charlottesville - it was very memorable!!

Yelp
a cute cafe in charlottesville. their service was super smiley, friendly and was pleasant. the food and drinks is what puts it over the top. i ordered an iced latte, seasonal honey & sea salt latte, the twin peaks sandwich, and a lorraine quiche. the twin peaks is actually the best tuna salad sandwich ive ever had. the seasonal latte was also perfectly balanced. this place is a must visit in charlottesville

Yelp
Very quick shop with a ton of variety! Prices are reasonable, and the pastries are excellent. I recommend the banana sourdough

Yelp
Goodness. What a delicious experience. I ordered mine for pickup ahead of time, and when I arrived (the pickup counter is at the far end, btw) it was ready- with the exception of my drinks, which I SO appreciate them waiting on. I had expected to have lukewarm coffees, but because they were made last minute it totally exceeded my expectations. The pastries were phenomenal. I get picky about these things too- too much time in the case can mean a fridge-like taste, etc., but not here. These were great. We tried all the versions of the croissants, as well as the palmiers. Really were baked to perfection with just the right sweetness. I was so happy. We also tried the veggie quiche, but because I'm not a fan of Gruyère I couldn't get into it. But that doesn't discount anything they have going on, it's a great place and I'll definitely be stopping again if I come back to Charlottesville.

Yelp
This is my go-to weekend breakfast spot. It's quick and conveniently located, and the pastries are going to do it for me every single time. I particularly love the apple galette.
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
Every time i go in there, i find something new! I love the flourless chocolate cake, and they make the BEST iced dirty chais! Everyone there is so helpful and upbeat, and the shop itself is cozy, modern & welcoming. Love coming here for a cup of coffee :)
google avatar

Ewa K.

Yelp
The cutest little coffee shop around. The food is super tasty and the staff is always nice. I make sure to visit them every time I'm in town.

Yelp
I mean, the pastry kings of Charlottesville are here in mini form, still killing it. What more can you ask for.
google avatar

Colleen B.

Yelp
Exceptional spot to get a pastry + coffee. Worth the wait. The menu has lots to offer and the breakfast sandwiches are divine!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Petite MarieBette has some great pastries! Their breakfasts are also delightful and I love their hot chocolate month. They do have a much smaller menu than the other location so just keep that in mind when you head here. The spot is cozy and seats are usually open :)

Yelp
Solid 4 Would come again. Everything is overall fine. Nothing spectacular but a nice little coffee and pastry shop. Pretty busy but lines move quick.
google avatar

Orest S.

Yelp
French bakery with a really good pastry and coffee. The place is crowded on weekends.

Yelp
After an early hospital visit, we decided to have breakfast at Marie Bette, where we hadn't eaten in ages. It was disappointing. The poached eggs came with a cracker-sized corner of bread. We we asked for more to put under the eggs. It took 20 minutes to arrive and the eggs were cold by then. The system of ordering at the cash register was new to us, and the server who brought the food was rude to us. Did I mention that we were charged $4.50 extra for bread? I am handicapped and walk with a cane with great difficulty. Had I been alone, I couldn't have managed the steep steps or ordering AND finding a table. The food is good, but the ambiance is not. My husband and I decided that this is not a restaurant for adults.

Yelp
Found this cute cafe/bakery shop while looking for a spot for lunch on a super busy Sunday in the main area. So we headed a few blocks away and easily walked in, walked right up to order, and had our food within 15 minutes! They're a little stuffy and snobbish upon entry and weren't friendly really at all... but the food was great and the menu options were excellent. They are requiring masks for everyone inside unless you are eating which is fine by me, but it's so terribly small inside that it seems futile if you wear the mask to walk up and order and then step 4 feet away to sit and take it off to eat... but kudos for trying and I'm on board. We went with a few things - I chose a piece of the quiche for the day which was a mushroom, leak and thyme. It was great and fresh and a pretty large piece for sharing. I also got an iced soy latte (no syrup) which was very good. My friend got a chicken salad sandwich which was actually a fairly large portion and the chicken salad was delicious! The real winner for me was the yogurt parfait with plain yogurt, a strawberry compote and some delicious house-made granola. YUM! The inside is charming and well-laid out and there was a clean and well-kept bathroom. A solid visit and a place I'd come again for some French pastries and parfait.

Yelp
Such a cute little shop, right in the downtown area of Charlottesville. The food is good, fantastic service, and the coffee is well made. They have beautiful pastry's! Definitely a place to check out in Cville!
google avatar

Yelp
Always five stars! They have their indoor seating open now and it was hoppin in there but the vibe was wonderful. I ordered a large candle for my daughter and a pumpkin spice latte with oat milk that comes with a mini canale. Amazing and efficient service, clean and inviting indoors with different types of seating choices to such as window stools, cushioned benches and table tops. Everything they make has been wonderfully prepared and I can't wait to try their quiche!

Adrian R.

Yelp
Nice spot for a good cup of espresso drink and fresh pastries. Nice ambiance. They have inside seating as well as a few tables outside.

Yelp
Perfect lattes. Great temperature and mix. Excellent pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Cute shop and across from the city market. Great service. The person helping us was super kind and helped us make some excellent pastry choices. A dash of France in Charlottesville.

Yelp
I found the mapping on various sites to be confusing. This is actually on Water Street next to Vu Noodles, which is not where google maps or Yelp make it look like. Anyway, it's a nice-looking cafe with a breakfast menu as well as baked goods. My chocolate almond croissant was flaky; I would have taken more almonds and less flakes but it was good. My chai was a subtle, vanilla-infused flavor, and it came out hot enough that it was still warm after I left it behind during my half-hour museum visit. I wasn't blown away by either item, but I would definitely come back for a more substantive breakfast if I were in the market.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
The food was alright. I got the breakfast egg burrito. The potatoes were yummy though! The people were nice

C M.

Yelp
I stopped in while passing through the area. I was delighted to find they make their own syrup in house for their pumpkin latte so I gave it a try. Their house made PSL was delicious, perfectly flavored, and not too sweet!

Yelp
[3:45 PM EST] I've been to the MarieBette location many times before, but this was my first time visiting the petite MarieBette. The selection available at this location was almost identical to the pastry selection available at the larger location. I was also impressed with the space that this place had! Although they did not have much seating inside (to be expected), the cafe was very spacious. I picked up a palmier to go and was very happy with my purchase. The pastry was crisp, covered in crisp sugar and very light and flaky. MarieBette has been an all-time favorite of mine in Charlottesville and I'm glad that they have a more convenient location to get their tasty pastries, light fare, and coffee/espresso drinks.

Yelp
Love the decor, lots of unique touches. Coffee was great, pastries were delicious, & the baristas were very friendly/welcoming.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
The perfect location, near the far end of the mall, and right across the street from the winter farmer's market. It's the perfect place to grab a pastry and a cuppa, and enjoy at their hightops. Not pretentious, warm and inviting, and worth checking out.

Yelp
I stopped by Petite MarieBette several times in the summer of 2019 while working in Charlottesville. I always had my order to stay and only came in on weekday mornings around 7 AM, so I never had trouble getting my order quickly, finding somewhere to sit, and getting some work done. I imagine it's harder to do this during prime time/weekends, but on weekday mornings it was pretty calm, although a few more customers tended to trickle in around 8 AM. Hot coffee drinks tended to come with a complimentary mini madeleine on the side, which was a sweet touch. Note that this doesn't seem to be the case for cold/iced coffee based on my 1 experience getting an iced coffee to stay. In addition to plain coffee, I ordered a matcha latte and a chai tea latte on 1 occasion each. Both lattes tasted less sweet and more "real" than what I'd get at Starbucks, and the chai was definitely spicier. For pastries, I had a pain au chocolat, a financier, a salted pretzel croissant ("pressant"), and an apple galette across several different visits. All of these were really good, although my favorites were the financier and the pressant. I could definitely see myself getting addicted to pressants if I lived nearby, and would recommend anyone visiting to try it! I didn't get to try many menu items (e.g. sandwiches, made-to-order breakfasts, etc.), but I did get a pre-packaged tuna salad 1 Sunday evening for dinner, when everything else nearby seemed to be closed. The salad was filling and did the job that night, but I would recommend sticking to pastries or maybe breakfast food here, since there's so many good restaurants in the vicinity for savory things. The café has a very pleasant atmosphere; all the décor is vaguely "French" and very cute. Some of the tables near the back were really wobbly, which occasionally made for a precarious situation since they fill their coffee cups up all the way. The ladies' room was always clean whenever I used it in the morning. This location is a short walk from the Downtown Mall.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite bakery in charlottesville for about three years now! Their coffee is really bold and flavorful, I recommend the iced caramel latte. The pain au chocolate and croissants are obviously amazing, but they have several other options including pecan sticky buns and financiers, as well as an actual menu. The staff is always friendly and the vibe in here is just great all around!

Shelby W.

Yelp
Super cute cafe with a great playlist! They have a good cold brew, and the Fifeville sandwich was delicious!

Karen R.

Yelp
Fewer options compared to the larger location but still great pastries. Go early for best selection.
google avatar

Ana B.

Yelp
Although the menu is very limited, the food and pastries are amazing! Coffee is strong and fresh not bitter nor acidy, just perfect
google avatar

Ariel B.

Yelp
Really an amazing branch of MarieBette! Came in last week and was not disappointed. I ordered a soy latte with their homemade marshmallows and everything was perfect. I highly recommend getting the marshmallows!! They are amazing in flavor and texture. The latte was also just right in flavor and milk to coffee ratio. I didn't order any pastries but if they're as good as the larger location then they should be perfect. The space itself is super nice and has a decent amount of seating. The atmosphere is lovely and the decorations were aesthetic. Will be coming back!
google avatar

Riley C.

Yelp
Everything is good here! No seriously, go buy something, anything and you will not regret it. They are practicing good measure to prevent passing Covid 19, including the unfortunate part of not having any options for dining.
google avatar

Zhana E.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! I love the location! The pastries are the same as the other MarieBette! The staff was super nice! It's not a great place to have a meeting or a long coffee break. The seating is not very comfortable and it's kinda of small.

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Great food. Cute little place. Kind servers. Best croissants. Love the pretzel one. One of my favorite parts of living in Cville is this place. So thankful for the delicious baked goods and the joy they provide!

Yelp
UPDATE April 2020: Due to COVID, Petite MarieBette is now offering takeout/curbside pickup from 8-2! The curbside service is well run (call when you drive up and someone wearing gloves will bring out your order). The food is wrapped in individual packages as well. The pain au chocolat is just as delicious and buttery as I remembered, and my husband enjoyed the croque madame (open faced). The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich was filling as well and the baguette was a wonderful balance of fluffy and outside crunch. I am so happy to still be able to enjoy freshly baked French pastries and breakfast offerings in what feels like a safely run way while the community is going through these tough times.

Carrie H.

Yelp
The best cup of coffee I have ever had! My daughter enjoyed her latte as well. We also shared a croissant & a croissant muffin thing with a raspberry in it. It was so delicious!! We loved the carmelized outside & slightly chewy texture was amazing. We wanted to come back every day of our visit & are sad we live 7 hours away or this would be a weekly visit.
google avatar

Kathy T.

Yelp
Came here and got an almond croissant and some other specialties. Yum! Was too full to eat my financier, kouign amann or canale until the next day but wow--were they delicious a day later! If I come back to Charlottesville, I will be back to this bakery!

Allysa C.

Yelp
it's a cute little place that was perfect for a quick pick me up! the hot chocolate and croissant i ordered we're a good size for their price and tasted fantastic!
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
I love this place. There is a great selection of pastries, especially considering the fact that this is a satellite of the larger main bakery. The coffees and drinks are delicious, I am especially a fan of the hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows. The hours can be difficult to determine, I have on occasion arrived when the sign on the door indicates the restaurant is opened, but still found it locked. Other than that, the place is really fantastic and I hope to see more small MarieBette locations in the future.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
go time lunch or afternoon pick me up. sandwiches are yummy and coffee is delicious. gets crowded on weekends but not too crazy during the week. can't recommend the fifeville enough. also, if you order a coffee "for here" you get peitite canoles with it!
google avatar

MP G.

Yelp
I love this new location for Marie Bette on the edge of the Downtown Mall. I love the location off of Preston but this place is larger and more of a grab and go Cafè rather than the cafe and restaurant. I got the sausage egg and cheddar sandwich on a baguette which they have limited hours during breakfast. Otherwise their croissants and brioches are a staple favorite!

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Great morning stop. I love the London Fog and a pastries. Great service. There is limited seating space to sit and noises at times
google avatar

Cameron W.

Yelp
Oh hey it's your girl, waddling over again to get an iced Red Eye and an almond croissant. The online ordering and pick up is so convenient, but even if you do have to run in and order in person there's never a wait and their pastries have singlehandedly talked me off a work-from-home ledge. PS: They, and non-Petite MarieBette, also do awesome promotions/celebrations for pride and Black history month so it's that's just the beautiful rainbow cherry on top!
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
The other location serves coffee in paper cups and forces you to take everything outside, but location has a beautiful indoor dining area with coffee served in ceramic cups alongside a miniature canele, food served on plates, and just a generally more pleasant atmosphere and vibe. The baguettes are very good -- similar to what you can find in France -- and the pastries are also very good. Prices are, of course, higher than France, but fair for the United States. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very clean. I wouldn't return to the other location, but would definitely return to Petite MarieBette.

Patricia G.

Yelp
Conveniently located just across the street from a public parking lot. The coffee is very good. The selection of pastries is plentiful. The order placing process and cashing out is a bit confusing but the service was friendly. Prices were reasonable. Would definitely stop in for a cup of coffee on our next visit to Charlottesville.
google avatar

Kasoondie F.

Yelp
Yummy! Everything here at the Petite Marie Bette is equally delicious as Marie Bette! If you want to read more, you can certainly read my review of Marie Bette! High marks across the board!
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Reasons to like Petite Marie Bette: it's incredibly easy to get the Marie Bette sandwiches you crave on the weekend when regular Marie Bette is a madhouse and only doing brunch. Reasons to be not so thrilled: the laptop campers. You may want to sit to eat that sandwich you ordered, but you'll find the table room limited because people with laptops have sprawled all their junk out and settled in for a few hours.
google avatar

A H.

Yelp
Satisfying and in all ways a TREAT to come here! I can't get enough of the atmosphere and the incredible selection they offer for both pastries, and cafe drinks alike! Best cafe in Charlottesville Hands Down!
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
Petite MarieBette is a great addition to the downtown mall. I've found there are few options for a quick bite or snack while walking around there. This fills that space for sure. It's a smaller spot with about a dozen tables and a more limited menu than the parent restaurant, but it delivers on both the coffee beverages and bread & pastries. I've been impressed with their almond croissants, iced coffee, macchiato, and loaves of bread. The inside is well decorated and service was friendly. They have a real small shop area with some wares to peruse and clean bathrooms - another hard to find amenity on the mall. And lastly, they're on Water Street which is my go-to for street parking when visiting the mall - so you're in luck there too.

Angelica D.

Yelp
Had the most delicious lunch and pastries. Place is clean and welcoming, and responsible about masks. Charming environs, highly recommend.
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
Food is good but expensive. Customer service left something to be desired. No indoor dining because of pandemic. No bathrooms for paying customers. Is that even legal in Virginia? Apparently many restaurants are closed on Mondays in Charlottesville, and you have to take what you can get. Would pass next time.
