What Ho, Apothecary! 18 Intriguing Pharmacy Museums

"The ceiling of Під Чорним Орлом, or Under the Black Eagle pharmacy, is painted with symbols of air, water, fire, and earth, representing the humors of the body, the preeminent theory of early medicine. Since 1735, Under the Black Eagle has tended to the apothecary needs of Lviv’s citizens, making it the oldest operating pharmacy in Ukraine. But since 1966 it has offered more than just medicine. The front room of the Under the Black Eagle is still a functioning dispensary, and it’s here that the pharmacy museum tour begins. Museum visitors can walk through 16 rooms to different historic eras of medicinal care, going back in time as they retreat further into the building. After paying a small entrance fee to the pharmacist, the pharmacy opens up to a wood-shelved room chock full of antique pharmacy equipment. There are mortars and pestles, various beakers, ornate scales, jars containing tinctures, elixirs, and other medicines, all from the 19th and 20th centuries.  The material room contains the equipment for manufacturing medicine in earlier times (pill machines, drying cupboards, extraction presses, recipe manuals, etc.). In a replica brewery the pharmacy still offers its “iron wine,” an ancient iron-boosted beverage said to raise hemoglobin in the blood. An outdoor courtyard with an attached 17th century apartment shows what the yards of Lviv’s upper middle class looked in that time period. The pharmacy also boasts one of the most comprehensive medical libraries in Eastern Europe, with over a thousand ancient medical texts and even more books from the 18th to 20th centuries.  In the basement, visitors can see one of the earliest forms of pharmaceutical studies: an alchemist’s laboratory. Oak stairs from the courtyard lead to this secret dungeon, where rare plants that would have been used in this seemingly magical room hang around the walls. This exhibit details the beginnings of medicine throughout Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I really liked this place. I was there alone, and it was a bit scary going down to the dungeon, haha. But overall, the experience was great.

(Entry fee 60 UAH in Oct 2024) Worth a visit into this atmospheric old building, not just to see the old pharmacy stuff but the balcony, interior courtyard and small cellar. Knocked a star off as there is little interpretation, and almost none in English. Be aware there are lots of stairs.

We visited the Pharmacymuseum without expecting much and were really surprised how interesting and big it was. We were expecting just like 3 rooms filled with old medicine, but this museum shows you way more than just this. You are being guided through the whole building including cellar and courtyard, filled with old relicts of medicine. Definitely the most exciting museum we visited in Lviv.

Very attractive place must visit but should always have a guid otherwise won’t be able to understand any thing. Must visit and explore the historic pharmacy museum know an important & interesting history of medicine which we use to take nowadays. For me it is very interesting to know all about those and I hope you will be too. They have all those antique items which were use in past.

One of the most interesting museums in Lviv. But only of you visit it with guide. Museum's dungeon (especially secret room of alchemist) is very impressive. Children liked this place too))

Good variation from walking around the old town of Lviv. Tip for you - you buy the tickets in the ‘real’ pharmacy, it was a bit misleading for us, as there are modern medicine on the counter and we though this may just be a pharmacy :) the museum is bigger than expected, there are a few floors. Overall it is worth to visit the museum.

Amazing collection and a very nice building. Details the long history of pharmacology in Lviv and in the region throughout almost the entire last millennia. The exhibition is authentic and even dabs into the practice of alchemy.

I personallt found it interesting to learn about the history of pharmacy in Lviv. Also the exhibition is quite intriguing as well. The place also actively serves as a pharmacy which makes it cooler :) Entrance is 20 Grivnas which is less than a dollar.
