I have staying at this hotel for over 30 years. It is a marvelous hotel. The staff has always been among the best in the world -- given how much I travel and love historical hotels , I think I have a right to make this claim. They are always accommodating and pleasant, this includes not only the staff at the desk, such as Massimo, but also the ladies who care for the rooms and the doorman, a tall regal fellow if ever there was one!||The lobby is simply magnificent, dressed as it is with classical moldings, murals, and giant oil paintings from centuries past. ||The garden is also incredibly beautiful, even in the winter months. I always take a room with a garden view -- no, I will not share with you the room number! -- and the rooms are themselves quite simple and very comfortable with all the amenities you would expect. ||However, I do have one, unfortunate comment. Apart from the ladies who serve us in the breakfast room, and Michele who has always led the way, the breakfast fare has become pitiful and typically corporate in nature, mostly canned food. Terrible, really, considering how a few years ago, when they first moved the breakfast area to the lovely basement area, they expanded the menu, and the offerings were quite diverse and splendid. But whoever or whatever has taken over the hotel, they have also closed the basement area from the garden, so that instead of having access to the garden and being able to dine there during the summer months they have walled it in. Horrible, really. This dimension of the hotel, I CANNOT RECOMMEND. ||As for the rest, most excellent. Just don't include breakfast, as a way to critique and discipline the providers of this horrific fare and claustrophobic experience. ||But as for the Hotel Canalgrande, I MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, with this single above-mentioned reservation. ||RICHARD MILAZZO|richardmilazzo.com
