We originally visited Modena with the intention of staying one night in an Airbnb style apartment. Because of traffic, we arrived very late, and decided to extend our stay by one night to take advantage of this beautiful and lively town. ||Because our apartment was booked the following night, we walked over to this hotel in-person to book a room for the following night. The lobby is beautiful and the staff were warm, inviting, and extraordinarily helpful. We got a little tour of the grounds and suggestions for dinner. The lobby was cool in temperature—a necessity given the hot temperatures outside. Needless to say, we were excited for our stay. The hotel accommodated us with an early check-in and little snacks and drinks at check-in. ||When we arrived in our room is when the problems began. We were assigned a set of adjoining “family rooms,” which were suitable in size, but hot in temperature. We were told that the reason the rooms were warm is because the air conditioner units had recently been turned on, and the windows were opened for the cleaning staff, and that it takes a few hours to cool down. Unfortunately, several hours later, the temperature only got hotter. ||We let the hotel know and we were quickly moved to two other rooms which felt like they were cooler in temperature. However, that feeling was very deceptive, mainly because the hallways are stuffy saunas, so any room felt cool upon entry. ||Two hours later, however, we came back to two more hot rooms. While we hoped we could just deal with the heat, at midnight, we decided there was no way that we could sleep given the temperature of the rooms. We called the desk, and Martin, who assisted us earlier, was extremely apologetic. He was able to move my niece and two children into a room with a slightly better air conditioner (maybe by 2 or 3°), and brought a fan into the room occupied by my wife and I to at least create some airflow. Needless to say, it was a very very unpleasant sleep for everyone, both because of the heat and having to shuffle rooms at such a late hour. ||To be clear, I place the blame here is squarely on the brand PHI. This hotel has a wonderful location and a friendly and dedicated staff. It is beautiful from the outside and in the lobby and has a ton of potential. It is a shame that the brand has let the hotel degrade to the condition it is. If they invested some money, they could make this a premiere hotel in a destination city. But, instead, they are squandering a fantastic staff by having them deal with a hotel in awful need of upgrades and repairs. The staff is limited by the tools they are working with, so when you have a hotel full of broken down air conditioners, there’s only so much even a fantastic staff can do.||Moreover, the hotel must disclose this type of issue at the time of check-in to allow guests to make an informed choice about whether to change their reservation to another hotel. It felt like a bait and switch. In fact, I was told by someone that 25 rooms had to be changed for the same reason. While the hotel waived my $20 parking fee as an apology, we would have left and gone elsewhere if we knew about the problem when we first arrived. I think more is required to rectify this huge inconvenience.
