17 Best Things to Do in Athens, From Hitting the Beach to Gazing at Ruins | Condé Nast Traveler

"For the best, least-crowded Parthenon views, I follow Dimitris Pikionis’s 1950s footpaths—laid with salvaged stones—past a Byzantine chapel, ancient quarry, and a 19th-century observatory whose silver dome hides an antique telescope occasionally used for stargazing; the hidden Pnyx awaits among the pines, a glorious twilight picnic spot." - Rachel Howard

Walking through Philopappos Hill felt like stepping into ancient nobility. The peaceful paths, olive trees, and marble ruins made me feel as if I were one of the Athenian aristocrats from centuries ago. From the top, the view of the Acropolis and the city is breathtaking — quiet, timeless, and full of grace.

Athens is a walking city and taking a walk/hike up this hill is worth it! It was lovely to experience being on the hill top towards sunset! Great views and a nice place to just relax for a little. Several different trails to take and easy to walk, but rocky on top, so watch your step!

Some of the best views in Athens are from this hill and even better, it's very easy to walk up. I highly recommend going around sunset time, a sunset from this hill is splendid. Take your time here, walk around the grounds, visit the prison of Socrates.

One of the best spots to see the Acropolis view. You’ll need to walk a bit, but the path is filled with street performers and beautiful scenery. You might even spot some turtles having a family argument on the mountain trail. Also, Socrates’ prison is along the way and definitely worth a stop. The uphill walk can be tiring, so good shoes are a must

It’s a beautiful area to walk through, with a forest-like setting and stunning views over Athens. However, I wouldn’t recommend visiting in the morning during summer months like August—it was extremely hot, almost empty, and the walk involves many hills. There’s only one small kiosk at the entrance for snacks, so come prepared.

This Hill is annexed to Acropolis and major interchange stop for Hop on-Off Buses. There is a Prison of Socrates there. It takes 10 minutes walk up the top of the hill where you can have magnificent 360 degree views of Athens and beyond. Worth the hiking (60 - 70 degree steep)

One of the best hills in Athens to see all the city around. Especially early morning, fantastic view and quiet place to meditate. I think Plato and Socrates were here many times. You should see it.

It was a delightful hike and we got to see all of Athens the same way that I would if we had gone to the Parthenon, so it was very rewarding since we couldn’t go to the former. It’s free to access and beautiful to admire. I just wish they had toilets other than the chemical ones back down at the entrance or something.
