"Dinner with locals Via AFAR.com, I met some American pilots now living as expats in Vietnam. They were nice enough to take us out to some delicious local dinner spots and on motor bike rides through the outskirts of the city! This place, Pho Cuon Huong Mai, was far from the tourist district and incredibly tasty. For some wonderful recommendations message Ryan Goheen on AFAR.com: http://www.afar.com/users/ryan-goheen"

The fish was still surprisingly a little fishy tasting, not sure if it's a catfish characteristic. But this dish was really so unique and really filling. The shop literally only has 1 item on the menu, the catfish, the do have 1 side of catfish spring roll too. I'd say that this place is a must try for a dish unique to vietnam. Definitely not disappointing at all. Service was also great as the staff cooked for us. Just lovely. I do find the taste gets a little sickening real fast, maybe it could've been just me, it's very jelak in my opinion. But I'd still highly recommend trying it out for a very unique taste.

Best meal I had in Hanoi and one of the most beautiful experiences in my mouth of all time. I'm a lover of dill and that in combination with the fish sauce, herbs, peanuts, the bun and of course the perfectly cooked fish is a truly delectable balance of flavours and textures. Combining all these elements reminds me of when you put together those lettuce wraps at Korean BBQ the customizability is simply too powerful. I also really enjoyed the passion fruit juice it was very tart and added an additional dimension of flavour and comfort. Pull up immediately, I know you can buy 10 banh mhis for the same price but this is definitely worth it

They only serve set menu, mudfish and spring rolls. It look simple but taste extremely delicious and unique. Everything compliments each other. Will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone visiting Hanoi. Their passion fruit is surprisingly refreshing and good. Their price is set per head, that’s why you can see solo traveller or couples or big group of tourist eating in this restaurant.

Not being a local, and with Cha Ca being a less well known Vietnamese dish outside of the country, I did not know what to expect of this Hanoi classic. The flavour of the fried fish itself actually rather subtle even with the tamarind marinade. However, when paired with the dill, spring onions as well as the usual condiments of chilli, fish sauce, peanuts and rice noodles - it’s actually a rather moreish dish. The fried spring rolls here are also decent. All in all it’s a nice meal but the Michelin Bib Gourmand certainly creates some inflated expectations.

Definitely worth visiting when you're in Old Quarter. The catfish gets cooked in front of you so it's kinda fun to watch. Mix it with noodles, chillis, sauce and more to get the perfect meal. We tried the spring rolls as well, not bad at all. Get the food with some beers and you got yourself an affordable delicious meal.

This restaurant really live up to the Michelin star standard. It is a must try at Hanoi. The fried fish is delicious and so is the fish head soup, so appetizing. We ordered 5 sets for 7 people and they split the rice noodle and sauces serving nicely for 7 pax. 👍Highly recommended.

I am so glad my friend recommended this restaurant to try this turmeric marinated fish dish which I understood is local to Hanoi only. The restaurant is clearly very popular among all the Vietnamese and was simply bustling. Turn around of tables was very very quick. Given they were very busy service was a little bit slow at the start but after we got served everything moved quickly. They help cook the fish and also assemble your first bowl of food for you. All the ingredients were very fresh. I would highly recommend giving this fish dish a try. It’s a set menu so makes ordering very easy. Some of the best spring rolls I have had as well ☺️.

This is a very interesting place to go. It’s lovely indeed but it has a certain set structure to it. It’s very fast paced and it has one to two things on the menu, which are amazing fish dishes. I’d recommend to cha ca. there might be a little wait but it’s a very fast turn around, they will seat you and you will most likely have a set table in front of you with noodles, herbs, sauces and such. You can then order any drinks and the particular fish dish you want, the English is basic but it’s all extremely straight forward so it’s not a problem. They will bring you your main dish and cook it on the table. You might feel confused but just wait and they will come around and show you how to serve it for yourself and then you can just top up as you eat along. It came very highly recommended and it was lovely to be honest. Give it a try if you’re up for some adventure.
