After finishing my 50 States Pho Challenge earlier in my 2018 Alaska trip in Anchorage, a friend of mine had suggested that this place was better than the other one in Alaska. I was like, okay, let's check this place out. And so, I did for lunch on a balmy June Friday.
Pho had always been a favorite of mine, with the basil leaves and the bean sprouts that highlight this traditional noodle soup from Vietnam. Not only was I having lunch here, but preparing for a fledgling 24 hour ultra distance event on the trail system around the campus of the University of Alaska - Fairbanks, that started at 8pm later that evening and I wanted to get some major carbs into my body before hand. I was nervous heading into that event, so I came here to Pho House to have lunch and calm my nerves a bit. And so, I was here around 12:30pm on nonchalantly noncommittal Friday here in the heart of Fairbanks, Alaska. It was June 2, 2018 and I was having my 2nd bowl of Pho in Alaska. Dare I say that I can do a 2nd round 50 States Pho Challenge? Maybe maybe not. Just wanted to have lunch before the big dance. The restaurant itself was small, but large enough to accommodate maybe up to 25 people at a time. The restaurant itself was clean and very spacious enough to just be intimate and casual at the same time. Vietnamese restaurants normally don't do large spaces, but maybe if it was popular in a certain area, they opt for a larger space. Not so much here in Fairbanks, but more space is always good for the customer. For better or worse, Pho is always a good thing and glad to have it here in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The difference between the Pho I had in Anchorage and here in Fairbanks is the fact that the Fairbanks one seemed to have more of a basic quality. The broth seemed basic and tasted sweeter, especially with the extra basil and bean spouts mixed into the bombastic concept. In choosing which is better between the two Alaskan bowls of Pho, I would have to say that the Fairbanks one is edges out and is more legit than the other. Sorry Anchorage. You were good, just not good enough! The overall experience here at Pho House Fairbanks was good and casual. The ambiance was very nice and quiet. Makes me glad I was on vacation at the time, but never hurts to live here for a summer. The service here was friendly and quick. From ordering to receiving, I would think it was around 10 minutes. I ordered extra bean sprouts and basil to make things interesting for sure, while adding in the extra noodles to complete the ensemble. Pho House Vietnamese restaurant is located at 400 College Road on the northeast corner of the city of Fairbanks, Alaska. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. They don't have much in the way of parking, but they are nestled in a small cul de sac and there was a couple of parking spots in back of the restaurant. I feel like that was a good thing.
Not sure about whether or not public transportation does come to the northeast corner of Fairbanks, but best bet would be to get a rental car or take an Uber / Lyft for your comfort and styling pleasure. For the most part though, trying out new variations of Pho is a good thing. Even though Pho is Pho, every bowl is different and your mouth and tastebuds will adapt over time and get used to the intricacies of the broth and how the basil and bean sprouts interact with the beef / chicken / meat you have in there with the rice noodles. I did enjoy the service here, even though it can be average, but it was friendly and they are soft spoken here. I know they take pride in the cuisine that they serve here and it shows in the quality and taste of the product. I also ordered an order of fresh summer rolls with shrimp on them. Thankful they were freshly prepared when ordered, rather than being kept frozen for hours before a customer orders it and it is defrosted. Those things suck, but im glad that Pho House doesn't do that and I'm happy about eating it. The ambiance was stereotypical of any Vietnamese restaurant you'd find anywhere in the country. Up here in the interior of Alaska, it's no different either. I had gotten the Pho with the most meat combinations with extra noodle and extra bean sprouts. I walked out of the restaurant pretty bloated but well worth the effort. The quality is superb here and I would like to invite you all to come to Fairbanks Alaska to try the Pho here. Thankful that my friends in Fairbanks had recommend this place to me while I was there in June 2018. Now the al recommending it to y'all on yelp. Try it! It's pretty intense!
4.5 stars for the overall experience. 4.5 stars for the pho and the shrimp summer rolls. 4.0 stars for the prices. Standard for Vietnamese fare. 4.0 stars for the service and ambiance.
