On the Grid : Gallery of Photography

"Established in 1978 and going strong ever since, the Gallery of Photography is the centre for contemporary photography in Ireland. Admission is free, and with a programme of some of the leading names in Irish and international photography in their exhibition space it is always worth a visit. Besides their excellently curated exhibitions they also have extensive production facilities for both digital and the darkroom while also running a range of training courses. To top it all off, the ground floor houses an incredible bookstore that stocks a myriad of photography and art books from Ireland and abroad." - It's Okay

I popped in here unexpectedly, and I was so impressed with the collection and community space the Photo Museum seems to provide and cultivate! From the beginning, there were lots of flyers for community events. The shop has lots of film and interesting books on photography. The two floors of free exhibits were really beautiful, and I deeply appreciated the intention in curation and storytelling. Seems they support new and diverse voices in photography, which is great. Also saw ads for workshops and the like of which I’m sure would be lots of fun to try out. Cool place. Free and accessible!

I was really looking forward to visiting the Photo Museum Ireland. I had read about it in advance and expected an engaging, well-curated experience that reflected its title as the national centre for contemporary photography. Unfortunately, I left feeling quite disappointed. The space is very minimal — a few photos on the wall, and that’s about it. There were no clear explanations, no interactive elements, no atmosphere that would make this feel like a museum. We even wandered around hoping to find other exhibition rooms or hidden galleries… but this was it. Honestly, it felt more like a quiet corridor in a gallery building than a proper museum. If I hadn’t known where I was, I wouldn’t have guessed it was a cultural institution at all. This place might work for people deeply into contemporary minimalist photography, but for the average visitor expecting a museum experience, it’s extremely underwhelming. In my opinion, calling it a museum is misleading.

From the moment I first walked into the Photo Museum Ireland I felt welcome. Doing the Introduction to 35mm Film Photography & Darkroom workshop sparked a fire within that hasn't dampened since. I've now done multiple courses and have consistently found the staff, tutors and other students to be friendly, patient and passionate people. I have also that the staff have been generous at providing support and guidance whenever I have reached out. The exhibitions are always worth a visit and the workshops offered are delivered to the highest standard. The equipment, facilities and location are top notch and in particular I have found the darkroom to be a wonderful place. It has everything I need and I always find it to be great working order and notice that it is respected by all that use it before and after. The one-to-ones have been particularly helpful to me as well as the introductory sessions to the facilities. I wholeheartedly recommend Photo Museum Ireland and am truly delighted that Dublin has a facility like this.

Woah, it was a really cool museum. It’s quite small but their current exhibition was powerful. It’s right in city centre and free so no reason to skip it.

I recently became a member of Photo Museum Ireland after beginning to shoot analogue. I’m blown away by the facilities available to members and the one to one introductory lessons . So far Darragh has thought me how to scan my negatives and today how to develop film. He’s a joy to work with and obviously passionate about what he does. I’d highly recommend becoming a member here, best thing I’ve done in a long time.

Great selection of photography books. Interesting photography exhibitions. Definitely recommend membership - it’s reasonably priced and has nice benefits including invitations to exhibitions, workshops & discounted access to scanning & darkroom equipment with training & support provided by helpful staff. Friendly inclusive atmosphere here.

I’ve been scanning my 35mm slides with the Photo Museum’s Epson Perfection V850 Pro Photo scanner—and it’s brilliant. Of course, the quality of the scans depends on the quality of your slides (or other photos), but it’s a great service. It works out much cheaper than having them scanned professionally and the quality is as good, and often better, than anything I have ever had professionally scanned. It’s also a really nice atmosphere in which to work as the staff are all exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Its a hidden gem in Dublin city centre. The museum is small and has am exhibition area, book display / sales area. It would be nice to have a library area too! The IFI is next to this, Great place to visit if you are in College Green / Temple Bar area - it free too

Yelp
This is a pretty deadly spot isn't it really. It's places like this that should be talked about more with regards to Temple Bar, rather than the diddle-dee-eye side of it. Tucked away inside Meeting House Square, the Gallery of Deadliness always has so much cool exhibits on. It's a nice airy exhibition space as well that lends itself well to medium sized showings. I most recently went to see Man On The Bridge, which is just a beautiful show - if you ever get the chance to go along, I'd highly recommend it. They also have a really nice shop downstairs that stocks some gorgeous photography based books. I could spend a fortune in here if I had it!

Yelp
I love doing things for free in this city especially during these times. The Gallery of Photography is a compact place, that you can easily explore in under an hour. They always have some fresh exhibit on show and the layout of the gallery is open and modern. Downstairs is the bookstore, which is stocked with a wide assortment of titles on the photography theme.

Yelp
At present there is a Steve McCurry display there and it is fantastic. This review should be more about the venue, I feel, but I also feel I should mention how great these photos are. Beautiful venue to display the pictures with a lot of space. I will definitely be going back for another event. The only problem is the flow, there was not enough room to comfortably walk by the other people there. Also, free!

Yelp
The Gallery of Photography is the perfect place to learn about the art of photography. Its location in Meeting House Square conceals it from the hoards of Temple Bar shoppers so it's not overcrowded either. It sells books on the trade and postcards of famous icons. The shop leads to a free gallery upstairs. This afternoon, the gallery was hosting an exhibition of photographer Josef Koudelka's work. He captured images of Russians invading Prague in 1968. Koudelka's voice narrated while his powerful shots were projected on the wall. The Gallery of Photography is a great place to visit for all people interested in this art form.

Yelp
One of the amazing free things to do in Dublin City Centre, The Gallery of Photography is a perfect Cultural pop-in. It's a smaller Gallery, that can provide for a quick trip in or a day of reflection. They always have something new/fresh to see and nothing about this gallery feels stagnant or stuffy. This is a Two level gallery with the lower level housing a bookstore with books, etc for purchase.

Yelp
Nice place. Free admission. Quality selection of photos. Not very big, but that what is presented, is showed in a caring and good quality facility. Also: Check out the shop. Great selection of books - but no Gregory Crewdson. Shame on you!

Yelp
At least when we stopped in there was no actual "gallery" to speak of. All of the walls were bare and the only pictures to be seen where on a slideshow being projected on one wall. Maybe we just happened to stop in here when they were in transition between exhibits, but if a new exhibit was coming there weren't any signs to saying when it was expected be ready to view. At least it was free, so all I wasted was a couple minute walking through a few empty rooms.
