The total distance for the Phugtal Monastery trek is approximately 7-8 km each way. In the past, there were unstable bridges over the Lingti Tsarap, but now a sturdy bridge has been built. The final climb to the monastery is about 2 km, leading up to its location on the cliff. It's a must-visit place to experience its tranquility.

This is a true wonder. The monestry is situated on the edge of the hill. The path to the monestry is full of beautiful scenery. Please be careful while doing the treck. The monks provided black tea and prasad as well.

It is more than 2500 years old. It’s built around natural cave that too in deep mountains makes more beautiful. That’s why people visit so much from around the world. 1 hr trek is required to reach here depending upon your physical endurance. You can park your vehicles/cars in parking lot just after purne village. In gompa, there is a restaurant and room options for food and overnight stay. Must visit. Definitely recommended.

AMAZING. A relatively hard walk to get to the monastery but really enjoyed the challenge and thrill of walking along the thin mountain paths.

A must visit, dramatic location. You will have to walk 1-2 hours on one side. The path is a bit dangerous so be careful.

Around 2,500 years ago, Phugtal (also written as Phuktal Monastery) was just a cave in the mountains. Monks, scholars and anyone seeking enlightenment lived and meditated in this cave in complete isolation, for years at a stretch. That&rsquos how Phugtal Gompa (monastery), built around the cave, got its name Phug = cave, tal = liberation. One of the world&rsquos oldest and most remote monasteries, it is situated in the rugged Zanskar Valley of Ladakh. It is said that the most dedicated followers of Buddha, like the Arhats and Guru Padmasambhava, lived in the cave of liberation at different times, over a thousand years ago.
