Cafayate in Argentina Is the Wine Town You Need to Visit Now - AFAR

"A hillside winery with a scenic open-air terrace overlooking the vineyards where guests can pair tastings—torrontés, chardonnay, malbec, and a malbec rosé—with traditional Argentine lunches such as empanadas, grilled meats with chimichurri, and humitas." - Ari Bendersky

Sept.25 As we came from Cachi on RN40 we came along several bodegas. @home I had pinned 3 Bodega's: Trassoles, Piattelli & El Esteco which I wanted to visit, but lay outside of Cafayate (so car was needed). We decided to visit Bodega Piattelli as we were early in time & wouldn't need to come back. I remembered they had English tour @3PM. We booked tour & wine tasting for ARS20.000 =€11.55 pp. We had still 35 min before tour would start. We wanted to sit outside, but a fierce warm wind was blowing; so we went inside. @3PM the tour started & the lady explained in English about the bodega & it's history. Originally the Piattelli's came from Tuscany, Italy. They sold in 2004 their property & brand name to Americans, who are now the owner. She showed us also process & afterwards there was the tasting in small groups. For the wine tasting, you could choose different options of wines : entry level, grand reserve or special selection. It's good to be able to taste & compare them all.

We did a winery tour, tasting and lunch at Piattelli. The winery grounds are spectacular. The tour was reasonably good, in both Spanish and English. We chose the Blend tasting (ARS $26.000 each at Dec 2025). There were 8 wines in the tasting, including 2 of the Icon wines. Unfortunately 3 of them were oxidised (the Loscano Family Collection Cab Sav and Malbec, and the Trinita), presumably from the bottles being open for a while. Our tasting guide did open a fresh bottle of the Cab Sav, which made a big difference, but the Trinita in particular was very disappointing. After the tasting, we had lunch at the winery restaurant, with nice views over the vineyards. We had the 3 course set menu which was ARS $55.000 (Dec 2025). The entree was empanadas, which were probably a bit too doughy. I'm no empanada expert, but the ones I had in town the previous two nights were both lighter and juicier. The main was pork churrasquito, which was good. Dessert was a flan with dulce de leche, which was reasonably good, though the flan was a little overdone (curdled). The meal came with a glass of wine for each course, which were all good - the Grand Reserve Malbec in particular was probably my pick of the wines we tasted. Overall probably 3.5/5 for the meal, but good value with the wines included. Service was excellent - 5/5. Overall experience was mixed - probably about a 3.3/5. But it really shouldn't be too hard to improve the food, and to manage the quality of already opened bottles of wine at the tastings!

One of the most incredible places I have ever been to, on my travels. I can't name any staff individually because they were all so amazing...Life is too short to keep going back to the same place, but this stunning place is worth every last second. The attention to detail is apparent from the moment you find this hidden gem. I almost don't want to post how good this place is, so that it stays my hidden gem ❤️

We had the tour, wine tasting and lunch afterwards. The location is beautifull and the setting is amazing. However, you notice that the quality of the services provided is not of the high standard you expect for such a place. The group tour was too large and the information provided was quite minimal. The tasting was done very well as the group was made smaller. The quality of the lunch was high. However the 5 course lunch menu was not available, which we would like to have known beforehand as we had not chosen the top notch wines in our tasting. And these wines were also not available per glass at the other lunch menus. Staff was very accomodating and friendly.

We did a wine tasting here and it was amazing! It's a great vineyard to visit and discover all the process of making the wine with a guided tour. For the wine tasting, you could choose different options of wines : entry level, grand reserve or special selection. It's so good to be able to taste and compare them all. It's truly an unique experience you should try.

The grounds of the vineyard are very elegant and we enjoyed our lunch in the covered terrace which was excellent - as was the wine. Afterwards we bought some wine to take home and the lady at the desk was very helpful by giving us a taste of two wines to help with our choice.

Google
Great winery. However, dining here will provide you with a true Somalian experience. Aka, you will be dining with a swarm of friendly flies. A tiny fan on each table will resolve this issue if anyone in management cares

Google
It’s a very basic tour but really, what more do you need. Unfortunately we paid for the icon tasting tour and some of the higher end samples were so tiny that it was hard to taste. We had lunch after and it was delicious. It is pricy but a nice treat. We did have a good laugh when the server took away our bread, plates, and utensils while we were using them (literally while trying to put it in our mouths). I recommend the skirt steak.

Yelp
This is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Argentina. The atmosphere is spectacular with indoor and outdoor seating, covered patio and al fresco dining. The music is soft and romantic. The staff is very attentive and the food is outstanding.

Yelp
We went here because it is the fanciest winery and restaurant in Cafayate. The restaurant didn't disappoint. The menu was varied, including well known Argentine favorites like sweet breads and regional classics like humitas, both with gourmet flare. We ordered the sweet breads, a homemade pasta flavored with the regional Cachi chili pepper (exceedingly mild and wouldn't rate much higher than paprika or black pepper) with a homemade sun dried tomato pesto, and an order of humitas, a local corn porridge dish cooked with milk and cheese. We also ordered two glasses of wine, one each, because wet were tasting that day and had already been to two places further down the road. If I was rating the restaurant alone, Piatelli would rate 5 stars. I would order every dish again. The sweet breads were some of the best I've ever had. The pasta was al dente and full of flavor. The humita was creamy, well spiced (Not to be confused with spicy), and comforting. Alas this winery is receiving a three star review for issues that should be addressed. First, this is a very fancy winery but the road to it, even the road in the winery is unpaved. I thought I only had to deal with unpaved roads if I was going to Cachi or Molina. Nope! The roads are so bumpy to get to and within the winery that some day tasters may get sick. Why on earth wouldn't yoh invest some money on a paved road. The rest of the winery screams "money, money, money!" The second and more serious problem to me lies in the tasting room. For those of us who taste wine to drink at home, we may seek to go to a few wineries. This means that consumption amount is limited. It also means the driver must stay sober enough to drive safely, and it often means that driver doesn't have his or her own tasting. Oh, and don't forget tiny people like me who are always toeing the line with getting sick off wine by consuming more than 2 glasses of over three hours or less. That was my situation. My bf was driving, wet wanted to share tastings when possible and both wineries up the road let us do so. We were eager to try Piatellis wine. They export, which means I might actually see the wines I the US. They told us no. Seriously?!? We'd just split three dishes at your restaurant. We were looking to do either tasting, the cheap or high end. We just couldn't handle our own tasting after a glass of wine with a late lunch and two prior split tastings. Come on. Change that, and you may get better rating.
