On the Grid : Pieces Of Eight

"Established by artist Melanie Katsalidis, Pieces of Eight offers a truly unique collection of artist made jewellery and small objects. Not only are the collections highly creative, but so too is the gallery/retail space itself – custom designed to showcase artists works, hold exhibitions & events and inspire visitors with ever evolving window installations. Can’t choose from one of the many pieces in store? Not to worry, they also have a collaborative approach to bespoke commissions, working closely with clients and artists to help you develop something individual and personal." - Grosz Co Lab

Always a wonderful experience working with the fabulous team at pieces of eight! First time working with them on a custom piece, artist Belinda Esperson. A family member loved the style a brooch though found it a little large so she created a smaller version that was just perfect! Look forward to many more purchases and hopefully custom creations.

The whole experience has been an unalloyed pleasure: a range of pieces that I enjoy choosing from, staff who are helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and helped make the whole process enjoyable. They handled the online enquiry as efficiently as they do in person. Sometimes pieces are simply beautiful pieces of art, other times they are keepsakes or reminders of people, places or moments of meaning or enjoyment. The pieces I bought are beautiful. They also were chosen because they work well together. One, a special order, will ultimately be a reminder of important moments, my late father and my aging cat. But collectively, these pieces make me smile as I look at them, singly or collectively because what could have been purely commercial transactions, purchases, instead reminds me of the women who listened to what I was looking for, cared about that, and helped me realise it. Or simply, this is a place with objects of beauty and people who can and will make considering them or buying them, a joy.

The whole team at Po8 Gallery go above and beyond at every instance. My partner and I have commissioned multiple pieces through Po8 and each time, no matter who we’ve spoken or worked with, the customer service and care taken has been impeccable. No matter the idea or request, the team at Po8 have done their utmost to ensure the best possible outcome. For instance, when we had prices commissioned that featured the fingerprint of our daughter, knowing the resin mould would be destroyed during the process, they first created a solid silver mould to use, something that they did happily as a complimentary service that is a stand alone piece in its own right. I simply cannot recommend Po8 Gallery enough.

Pieces of Eight is my go-to for timeless, wearable luxury. The curation is always on point and all the artists in this gallery are incredibly talented. However, Melanie Katsalidis' pieces are my absolute favourite—sculptural, stunning, and unique. I always get compliments when I wear her creations. I own several and wear them constantly. They're effortlessly special, every day. I am obsessed with this place!

I’ve been fortunate to have followed Mel’s work for almost 20 years— and have appreciated the immense effort she has put into her own work, not to mention curating a wonderful group of artists through Po8. Over the years I’ve been able to purchase her work— and it was a no brainer to get my engagement and wedding bands made by her. Her staff are incredibly helpful and kind- and I always make an effort to swing by and see what is in store. I’d highly recommend a visit and talking to the staff about any custom pieces!

In an overwhelming jewellery landscape, I love shopping at - and always feel very looked after - at Pieces of Eight. Everything is beautifully curated and I love that they offer everything from entry level to super special occasion pieces. Visiting Pieces of Eight always feels like a cool experience - I look forward to slowly adding to my collection of their pieces over the years.

THANK YOU! 🙏 A few years ago, I inherited a beautiful ring that I always planned to redesign for my 21st birthday. I had the privilege of working with Hannah and Shimara to design a custom piece - something timeless that I could wear every day. From the very first consultation in May through to picking up my ring today, the entire process was seamless. To be honest, I was nervous - this ring holds so much sentimental value to me. At one point I began second-guessing myself, wondering if I was making a mistake by changing it. But this afternoon, when I saw the finished piece for the first time, I was almost in tears. It is absolutely stunning - more beautiful than I ever imagined. Thank you to Hannah, Shimara, and all the wonderful women at Pieces of Eight. You've helped me create something truly meaningful - a piece of history I'll treasure, and one that will be passed down my family for generations to come. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Yelp
Tucked down a lane off Bourke St, Pieces of Eight is the pearl in the oyster that is Melbourne contemporary jewelry, having moved from their original space earlier in 2011, the new space still feels new and clean, but not sterile. It's like hanging a work of art, when it's done right, all the supports become invisible, letting the art stand on its own. With more than fifty jewelers and artists on display, the staff are knowledgeable in depth on each and every one of them. The pieces themselves are very diverse, ranging from traditional materials to geometric shapes to found scraps of toys to feathers and fur. The eclectic mix car appear a little daunting at first, but after the first few seconds you notice the glow of it all. In the centre cabinet and front windows can often be found an exhibition - be it one artist in resident or a collection on a theme. Having never bought anything from here, I can't tell if it's expensive or affordable, what I can tell you is that having a peruse is well worth the time.
