Who would've thought the local tow pound lot would become the next public park space? Well, that's precisely what happened here. Hudson River Park has progressively continued to reclaim space along the Manhattan side of the Hudson River, and Pier 76 is the newest addition.
This public space is open daily, with shady spots all over created by the former building skeleton of the tow pound, along with concrete furniture and planters throughout, movable for large events when the space is rented out.
Great for running, or just simply hanging out and chilling, it has great views on every side: downtown, uptown, and even Jersey. If you're interested in learning more about the history of the pier or the neighborhood, there are placards placed throughout the middle section providing more information than you probably ever wanted to know.
The creation of Pier 76 as a public park space was a pet project of former Gov Andrew Cuomo. We have him to thank that this has become a reality and another great public space on the West side of Manhattan. In the future, this is expected to be connected to the High Line, too!
