On the Grid : Hickory Lane

"Fancy beef at this neighborhood bistro. A little pricey for the neighborhood, but they do have some “foodie” options. Any place with decent outdoor drinks (right next to the historic penitentiary) and a quality burger are a good call." - Radlands

Have been seeing this place for a few years now and, instead of us going to our normal choice of Urban, we decided to finally give this place a try. We went on a Tuesday night and it was overcrowded but wasn't empty either - there were a good number of people there for dinner. We initially sat outside since it was a nice night, but moved in since it started drizzling and we didn't want to get caught in any more rain if it came down. We expected inside to be bigger than it was, but it did have a good number of tables and bar seating. The lighting and decor were nice - have like modern, chic nautical feels. For you meal we shared the Mozzarella Sticks as an app, he got the Fish and Chips while I went with the Chicken Sandwich with the Pier sauce. The waitress said the sauce was like Chick-fil-A sauce and I thought she was making a loose comparison but, honestly, it really did taste like Chick-fil-A sauce but slightly more rich in flavor. And as someone who doesn't prefer fries, these were delicious! My boyfriend said he really enjoyed his meal as well. Truly enjoyed the drinks and appreciate the nice pours of tequila shots. Glad we finally have this place a try. Recommend checking em out and, because it's close to us, sure we will come here again.

I walk in Fairmount often and recently decided to stop by Pier Bar with a friend. We just missed happy hour—which was a bit of a letdown because the menu looked fantastic! I highly recommend sitting outside if there is seating available. We still ordered drinks; my friend’s was excellent, while mine—a purple cocktail made with pea powder—was a little too adventurous for my taste. That said, the food more than made up for it. My friend had a burger, and I ordered the shrimp Caesar salad—both were absolutely delicious. I’m really looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu!

Nice atmosphere but average cocktails, below average service, and bad food. I got the caesar salad with fried chicken - overdressed old lettuce and microwaved frozen fried chicken. My boyfriend got the white mussels which he couldn’t eat half of because they were overcooked. Server couldn’t care less about our existence. Probably won’t revisit.

I met some girlfriends for happy hour and then got dinner with my partner after. It was a great atmosphere with well priced happy hour deals. The ricotta toast was the same portion for the happy hour price that it was at the regular dinner price, which was nice to see. I hate when places run happy hour deals that are just smaller portions and not actual deals. They will also make any of their cocktails as mocktails for a reduced price, which I appreciate. I got the fish tacos and my partner got the fried chicken sandwich. Both were good, and notably the fries were much better than the fries at IOS even though it is the same owners that run both restaurants.

Our server was nice. Good Morning Burger was meh. Fries were fantastic but the serving size was so small!! I went with a group of 7 and the restaurant was EMPTY and they didn’t want to sit us together and made us split up. Like I get it it’s a small restaurant but all they had to do was push two tables together and move some chairs because the restaurant was empty. I don’t see myself going back but if I do it’s gonna be for takeout on the fries. Overall all though don’t recommend.

Went here for the happy hour and was really excited about the happy hour food and drink selection! However, I found the experience to be very average. The food was okay, the service was okay, the atmosphere was okay. The drinks were great! The fish tacos were good but as someone that has eaten a lot of fish tacos these were lackluster. Same with the fries and burger, nothing super special. I think I definitely have to go back in the summer for happy hour and sit outside to really get the full experience.

This was a great date night spot. Friendly service, good drinks and ambience, and better than expected food! We got a Caesar salad to start (unfortunately this was a bit soggy and not as crisp as we would've liked). Fries were the exact opposite, crispy to a T, and were well-seasoned... helped us get over the Caesar salad quick. Main entrees were Lobster Mac and mussels (the liquid was so good I could've drank the entire bowl) - both delicious!!! We would definitely go back!

I came for happy hour and got the Dark Stormy, friends, a burger, and cheesesteak egg rolls. The Dark Stormy was really tasting and refreshing. The fries were cooked perfectly and were crispy. The burger was juicy but bland even with salt and pepper. The egg rolls had too much spice in it, maybe too much black pepper. The egg rolls didn’t have enough filling for me, too much excess wrapper. The cheese sauce had too much spice in it too. This place is dim and intimate. The service was excellent.

Yelp
Situated on the finest corner Fairmount has to offer, Pier Bar clearly makes the neighborhood more lively and elegant with its outdoor strung lights, abundant seating, and classy facade. Inside, the space is intimate, with dim lighting, and a modern touch. The service and the food are both pretty good. It isn't exactly a "value" restaurant where you get a ton of delicious food for a low price (always the ideal), but it is a nice space for a date night or just a random outing with friends. I would certainly take family here, particularly given the nice outside experience. Brussel Sprouts - Tender brussel sprouts with a sauce similar to balsamic vinaigrette and fried onions -- very tasty. Would recommend these, but we were really going for the shishito peppers which were unfortunately out of stock -- not a bad substitution. Cheese Burger - A pretty good burger with amazing fries. The burger was well put together, though I wish it had more cheese. It was tasty, but a little dry for a "medium" cook. I would give it another try. The fries were so crunchy and well-seasoned; they were delicious. Value: 3/5 Quality: 4/5 Quantity: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5

Yelp
I've been a few times, and the food is so fresh and delicious! A super fun vibe with outdoor seating, and when the weather is nice they open the windows so it feels like you're outside even if you're in the restaurant. I had some incredible brussel sprouts with a soy vinaigrette in the winter, but then couldn't get it again in the summer because the brussel sprouts weren't in season, so it's really nice to know the menu rotates and is kept fresh. In summer, I really recommend the watermelon feta salad. I also love the mussels in white wine sauce. I would definitely recommend for a fun casual vibe, with good fresh food!

Yelp
Great cocktails for happy hour! Went here on a nice summer day for their happy hour! Cocktails are $8.25 and I got the bite back which is a spicy mango margarita. It was the perfect blend of spicy and sweet with a good amount of tequila in it! My fiance got a beer and we were super excited they had one of our favorite German beers on tap (Konig Ludwig Hefe) for $6.50. The service was excellent and the waiter (Kevin) even checked in with us right before happy hour ended. They have a nice patio with lots of tables which is great for sitting out for happy hour on a nice day!

Yelp
This is a great place to go for happy hour especially when it's warm out. It's right on Fairmount Ave (which I always love since everyone's out and about and the vibes are here great!) I enjoyed both my drinks and the food, and our waiter even gave us a free ricotta and bread since apparently they made extra! Overall i would definitely come back here to try more items on the menu.

Yelp
Only heard bad reviews on this place from people who live in the area but still decided to give it a try. Had the whole happy hour menu and it was just okay. I didn't really enjoy their oysters

Yelp
Already came back for dinner and I can confirm that the food, service and vibes are consistent. Prices are very reasonable as well! This time we ordered the white mussels, shrimp tacos and soft shell crab sandwich. We preferred the red over white mussels, but this was still super flavorful and fresh. Shrimp tacos were outstanding and the soft shell crab sandwich was filling and had a nice kick to it. Fries that were paired with it was so addicting. This restaurant is lively at night with a great selection of music. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Had a chance to visit after the recently reopened. We came during happy hour, and I was happy to see that they had a good variety of happy hour drink and food options. We ordered a combination of items off the happy hour and regular food menu including the clam strips, clam chowder, tuna poke, and mussels. Everything was affordable and tasty. We had gotten the happy hour portion of the clam strips (good portion of food) but could easily have eaten more. Not because they don't give you enough, but because they are so good! I liked everything we ordered and service was great and attentive.

Yelp
One of our favorite neighborhood spots. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The clam strips are one of my favorite dishes. We always get them, tuna poke, the halloumi, and mahi mahi tacos are also on our regular rotation. The entire vibe of the place is great.

Yelp
Found multiple pieces of hair in 1 dish right when it came out. Server sent it back, took it off the bill, and gave me a new dish. Very appreciative. I was almost finished with a separate dish when I found hair in it. I didn't bother to say anything. Just asked for the bill. Hope they invest in hairnets in the kitchen. Unlikely return which is a shame - they have great food and drinks but sanitation is an issue.

Yelp
Good location of a restaurant. Soft-shell grab sandwich is great. Very reasonable happy hour prices as well. The cocktail and beer selection is good. Servers are friendly and attentive.

Yelp
AMAZING!! I love the happy hour here- the Bite Back cocktail is to die for. Pineapple margarita with a kick of jalapeño. Been here twice in the last week. Can't go wrong with the happy hour menu- the mahi tacos are our favorites. Also love the White Mussels. Great neighborhood spot!

Yelp
It's refreshing to have a seafood place in the neighborhood. I've been here twice so far. First time I had the fish taco. It was under seasoned. Second time, around happy hour time. My order of shrimp felt slightly overcooked. The rest of the food was okay. The restaurant has potential of being better. I hope it lasts more than a few years.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour and stayed for dinner. We were a group of 5 + a dog. The waitress checked in on us a few times before happy hour closed to make sure we were happy with our current orders. They had downeast on draft which is a huge plus!! The staff was very nice and the food came out hot. Will definitely be back; just hope it stays warm enough for us to continue to sit outside.

Yelp
An extension of Fare, Pier Bar is a great summery location for outdoor bites!! They have a great selection of seafood, including crab and mussels. Their beer selection also includes bottles and local drafts. We tried the King Crab legs, which are absolutely delicious. So fresh and full of meat, you definitely get your money's worth! Their mussels come in white or red sauce, and both are delicious. We loved the white mussels on a hot summery day. The calamari was also cooked to perfection - I recommend asking for their chipotle mayo sauce. It really helps the flavor kick! All in all, the location is great (as it is outdoors completely in the shade) and the food is delicious!'l Our server was very friendly and I would definitely come back!

Yelp
Good start to this new business- really nice outdoor setup with plenty of nice plants/trees. Nice view of Eastern State Penitentiary. Livens up the corner. What they could improve on: music was pretty bad- painful top 40 and r&b which is irritating to listen to. House wines are very sweet- could use some dry house wines.

Yelp
the FOOD was SO GOOD. we had the white wine mussels, whipped ricotta toast and shrimp tacos and everything was soooooo good.

T. K.

Yelp
Was in tonight for dinner. Service and drinks were good. Ordered the mussels- they were lousy. 1/3 were empty and the rest were not good. Shrimp tacos were decent. Super disappointed in the mussels- feel like I got ripped off for those.

Yelp
Good happy hour spot (M-F 5-7p) with a cute theme and lots of nice outdoor shaded seating. If you like the food at Fare, you'll like it across the street here too. Plenty of dogs and kids in addition to young couples. The happy hour prices are great and the people watching on this corner of Fairmount Ave is even better.

Yelp
I have found my new happy hour spot. Amazing fresh seafood and drinks. This place should be packed. Everything was delicious and the amount of food they give you for HH is amazing. Great drink proves too.

Brigitte K.

Yelp
oysters are okay - but serving them on a bed of lettuce instead of ice is terrible!!!! I head of.

Ryan A.

Yelp
Only saving grace was the selection of cocktails. Jamaican sunset was great, as was the passionfruit hurricane. Food left a lot to be desired and was frankly overpriced. Avoid the lobster roll. Wasn't expecting a roll like the ones you'd get in Massachusetts or Maine, but for $24 at least throw in some fries with the cole slaw sandwich (featuring bits of rubbery canned-tasting lobster). The clam strips were good! The fish in the fish taco was not dissimilar in size to a clam strip. Nice flavor, however.

Yelp
Waste of money. This restaurant is new to the neighborhood so I thought I would check it out. Definitely not going back, had to literally hustle home because my stomach went sour. The seafood is not fresh and is priced as if it were. This guy must be making a killing with canned/freezer seafood. Lobster mac and cheese tasted/looked like Anne's white cheddar shells with a few pieces of canned lobster. Dungeonous crabs were rubbery and had an off color/taste. The u peel shrimp was awful, some pieces were over cooked while others were raw. Our drinks were the only thing that was good. If your not going to serve fresh seafood then don't market your business as a seafood restaurant. Skip this spot, there's too many other restaurants in Philly worth trying.
