Yelp
I'm very sad to say that Pig and a Jelly jar has gone downhill for me. To be fair, Covid affected a lot of businesses especially restaurants for the worst. However I just can't justify a 5 star review after the last few experiences we had there.
To start, I'm not sure if this is due to Covid and how businesses have changed their setup i.e. less contact for ordering, payments etc. But this is a little strange. You walk in and no longer is there a nice open seating area. There are very few tables inside and now there's a counter to walk up to order. This used to be a full service restaurant now it's like fast casual almost.
The person at the counter seats you, and with a completely empty patio, she sat us right next to the only table out there. Our table was also extremely wobbly but you don't have a server, seems like just busboys (or "buspeople" to be more PC haha) and food runners, so we couldn't let anyone know about it. We ordered chicken and waffles which was always my favorite there and my husband got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich with fries. We also ordered beignets for dessert.
Our food was delivered and took a really long time considering there were only us and another table whom had already received their food. On top of that everything was lukewarm at best. A cold, runny egg on top of a waffle isn't exactly appetizing. Both of our chicken was completely dry and just really disappointing. Not at all what I had remembered and loved about Pig and a Jelly jar.
The Nashville hot chicken sandwich was not just underwhelming but strange. It tasted like it just had some chili sauce on it for heat which was pretty much non existent. Not what you'd expect for a "hot " chicken sandwich, and chili sauce is really not my thing, maybe if you like spicy ketchup on your sandwich, this is for you. They used to have great homemade fries, now they are frozen crinkle cut fries.
To top it off, our beignets that we wanted for dessert, came out at the same time as our entrees, getting cold, while ironically our entrees were already cold. I would never call these "beignets". They were not light, fluffy pillowy sugary goodness like I had hoped, instead they were leaden dough that was more like an overworked, dense biscuit. Not fried, nothing redeeming whatsoever. It pains me to write such a harsh review, but I honestly could not in good conscience recommend this restaurant to anyone. There were no check backs and no refills on drinks, even our waters. We left disappointed and likely never to return again. I hope things change for the better for them because in their heyday I felt like they were a Salt Lake go to. Wishing the best for the future Pig and a Jelly Jar. Make Chicken and waffles great again!!
