Vegetarian pies can be bloody brilliant when done right — packed with flavour, seasoned properly, and actually celebrating the veggies. But the “Waltzing Matilda” was more like a slow shuffle at the RSL on a Tuesday night. The broccoli and cauliflower were cooked but the mushrooms went walkabout, and the cream cheese sauce was about as exciting as plain porridge. Not a hint of seasoning to lift it — just beige on beige. The pastry was decent, but even a ripper crust can’t rescue a filling this dull. If this is “cheesy garden goodness,” then I reckon the garden’s dead. That said, I’d genuinely love to see this one given a revamp — with some proper seasoning, fresher veggies, and a sauce that sings instead of sulks. I’ll be back, and I’d be stoked to find a new and improved Matilda worth dancing for next time.
