I'm a diehard foodie and I'll eat just about anything, anywhere, but I had to draw the line at the little local eateries in the Mercado Pino Suarez. This market is a must-see for all visitors to Mazatlan if only to take in the various sights and smells!
There are a mix of booths here, half for tourists and half for locals. Ignore the cheesy t-shirt, caps, and trinket shops and look for the "real" local food stalls. You'll be able to find fantastic spices, local fresh fish, butcher shops (with whole goats and the like), homemade breads and candies for sale. If you speak Spanish and spend pesos, that's a big plus. Once they see that you're a visitor, the prices will increase so be prepared.
Bring your camera because this market is a photographer's dream! The colors and the sights, the diaper-clad kids, the random cat or dog running about, the handwoven sandals, the bottles of cheap tequila lining the walls -- there's not a lack of subject matter for your vacation pictures.
Climb the very rickety staircase to the second floor where you'll find small restaurants that literally look like someone's house with a small kitchen and dining room. Grandma in the kitchen, mismatched napkins on the table. The proprietors will come out and try to lure you inside, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm sure it would be fine to eat there if you have an iron stomach (I mean, there were freaking pigeons pooping in the doorways below) and they didn't look too clean or hygenic, even for standards in Mexico. The food offerings did smell good though, and if you want a true taste of authentic Mexican cooking, this is the place.
