On the Grid : Piolho

"A place for day and night with a very established reputation. Piolho is a must for party people. For a long time, Café Âncora D’Ouro was affectionately called: Café Piolho (Lice Café in English). No one knows the exact reason why, but there are many theories! One thing is for sure, this place is well known for being a daily stop for university students and teachers, doctors and patients. The beer is cheap!" - Ana Bárbara & Armindo Araújo

In you happen to visit the beautiful city of Porto, then you have to go to Piolho Café D’ouro for some of the most authentic Portuguese cuisine. One of the best Francesinhas in Portugal, along with many other incredible dishes. Great staff and atmosphere, don’t miss out on this experience!

Great place to learn a bit about Porto history and the waiters are happy to talk about it. Food was good, coffee was also good. You can go with a group since they have a big room and can accommodate groups. The most funny part was the paper placemat. You need to go and check it out to understand. 😅 I highly recommend if you are visiting Porto to have a coffee and/or try “francesinha”.

You think the customer is always right. Forget about that if you plan to visit Portugal. Recently I was at cafe Piolho with some friends and I had a very unpleasant experience there. To be fair, before that, I visited this cafe many times and I never had bad experiences. I have to say that I see more and more foreign visitors in this cafe, and I believe that it has an impact on the way we are treated (like in many other cafes and restaurants). So that night we were 5 people, 4 foreigners and one Portuguese, but we were speaking Portuguese with the waiter. When he brought the bill at the end, something that we did not order had been added (we reported it) and we had been charged the price of normal wine (in bottle) when we were served vinho da casa, which is much cheaper (3,50 euros for normal wine vs 1,50 for vinho da casa). As we ordered 4 glasses of wine, we were cheated out of 8 euros. As I didn't want to spoil the mood, I didn't say it to the waiter. Moreover, it was quite difficult to prove, as our glasses were already empty. But I'm able to distinguish the taste of a normal wine and the taste of "vinegar". Next day, I decided to go back there to report it (I know that I won’t be reimbursed the difference, but for me it was a matter of principle). Our waiter was there and when I explained to him the situation, he directly told me that I should talk with the owner, what I did. I will never forget the horrible way I was treated. In a normal place, they would try to be accommodating, for example by offering you a glass of normal wine, so you don’t leave the place angry and they don’t lose a customer. But in Piolho cafe, you can forget about that. The customer is not always right and apparently it’s more important for them to have earned some money dishonestly than retaining a customer... Therefore, I will never recommend to anyone to go there. I even make a bad publicity of them every time I can. Don’t lose your time going to this cafe, there are plenty of restaurants in Porto which are much better and honest.

Stopped here for brekast after our visit to Livraria Lello book shop. Lovely cafe for Pastel de nata and a coffee we sat outside and had great views of the cathedral, although the hoardings from the metro work were a little in the way

Excellent and warm welcoming staff. A bit too relax and lay back philosophy but, it's notbreally a a touristic place. Great food and good wine too, although not a wide variety

Busy place, we went in a group, it was around 11pm at night. We were served very well. We ordered some salads and drank drinks and beer. It was crowded in front of the establishment, but inside there were no customers. Busy place, we went in a group, it was around 11pm at night. We were served very well. Excellent portuguese food and drink at very reasonable prices, just in front of Oporto University. Local friends recommended this to us and they were right: a place popular with locals. Try the francesinha (unless you are VERY hungry, one of them feeds two) and other popular dishes on the menu. Excellent house wine.

A cafe having a great history in the city which served the college students during the old times is a symbol of democracy in the city. Although I did not eat here, the history of this place should be known to the people who visit the city.

Yelp
An authentic Portuguese setting. It's in the heart of historic (but never too old) Porto. The local is historical and with cultural interest. Over the years it has always been a meeting place for students of any faculty that today, years later, we get together to remember the old days bringing gifts to the house that welcomed them at a young age. The waiters are tireless, but always friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is typical. The place looks chaotic but you can always find your own peace of mind. The cheerfulness and joviality are not lacking. The kitchen, which is open until late at night, serves typical dishes of good quality at very low prices. Nothing else to add: a historical place that you absolutely must visit. Because Porto's places of interest are hiding even in places like this.

Yelp
It's a lunch house located in old Porto. You are here for the experience and not for Michelin star food...Personally liked the setting very very Portuguese old style buildings to savor when you sit outside. Felt like this is the hangout for students and very lively ambience. Service as you would expect not phenomenal but just right for the setup. You are there to hangout with friends and not service. We started with soup and Samosa, delicious. Soup (2 euro)was potato and cabbage base with salt and pepper. Samosa (1 euro)was small and just about right with crunchy wrapper and lightly spiced meat and vegetable stuffing. We got the special of the day pork rib, rice and fries, (6 euro) oh my the portion size no wonder students frequent this place. We also got the fried cod. Not much to rave about food, but simple, tasty and satisfying. We also had two glasses of red wine, total cost euro 23.40. Just look at the pictures I would say totally worth for a stop during your touring hike for refueling. Would definitely visit again.
