Nature and Parks in Asheville

"Pisgah National Forest is located just outside of Asheville and serves as a point of access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The lush green forests, streams, and waterfalls, which can be reached through any number of hikes, are breathtaking. For an educational visit, the park’s Outdoor Learning Center offers many free exhibits, classes like photography, and the chance to explore historic cabins. A picnic is always a good idea, but the forest is not far from Asheville and other small towns." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Pisgah is waterfall heaven—easy roadside views, peaceful forest waterfalls, fun water thrills, plus rich history and epic lookout points. Perfect for a full-day outdoor adventure that mixes nature, history, and excitement. Looking Glass Falls A stunning roadside waterfall—just a short .3‑mile walk from the parking area. The 60‑ft plunge is dramatic and lush, perfect for pics and a quick refresh. Moore Cove Falls A gentle 0.7‑mile round‑trip hike leads you behind a dreamy 50‑ft waterfall tucked into a forest cove. Quiet, scenic, and a refreshing change from the crowds. Sliding Rock This natural waterslide is a total blast in summer—you sit and slide down into an 8‑ft deep, chilly pool. Lifeguards, parking, and a fun, active vibe make it memorable. Cradle of Forestry in America Explore the birthplace of America’s forestry education—rich history, woodland trails, and interpretive exhibits. A meaningful stop for nature buffs. Frying Pan Lookout Hike up to the fire tower for sweeping panoramic views of the forest and Blue Ridge Parkway. Ideal for sunset or a peaceful mountain escape.

This National Forest is full of beautiful views, amazing waterfalls and peace loving nature. From Cherokee NC, it took only 15 minutes to get into this National Forest, The drive is amazing and every view point is marked and adequately parking is available for stop view and go. The waterfalls were amazing, especially Sliding Rock, Looking glass. The tranquility is immense and because it's not summer, There was not much rush which made us enjoy nature and its peace. We will be returning for Summer time so that we can take a dip in those beautiful waterfalls. There are no shops, so prepare your food and beverage to enjoy the whole day.

Really cool place for outdoor activities. The entrance is $5 per person and there is so much to do. Our favorite was sliding rock and the waterfalls. Perfect for hiking. The water is more in the cold than normal, but is perfect for the summer heat. Bring water shoes and towels.

Really excited to visit Pisgah National Forest near Asheville in Western North Carolina and considered one of the nation's best for outdoor recreation areas! It was a very scenic drive and “Blue Ridge Parkway” travels through large parts of Pisgah. Although, It rained on and off — and the sun played peek-a-boo. Awesome trip! Couldn’t hike any trails🥾 they were a bit too muddy, but did hike a few trails to see some of the waterfalls. Pisgah is a spectacular 500K acre forest, beautiful high peak mountains, white water rivers, water streams galore and over (400) miles of hiking trails. Nice visitors center with a lot of information about Pisgah’s history! Entrance to the forest is free — however some activities within Pisgah will charge a small fee. Will definitely circle back this fall when the leaves 🍁 begin to peak and take better pics. 😉 North Carolina is an incredibly beautiful state and Asheville Rocks! ✨🌟 Fun Fact: Pisgah received its name from a Presbyterian Minister, Reverend James Hall. Impressed by the spectacular vistas from the top of a 5700+ feet mountain. Hall named the peak after the biblical Mt. Pisgah from which Moses viewed the promise land. #NCNationalForest🪾 #NeverStopExploring🥾 #GetOutAndPlay #ProtectPreserveEnjoy🌳 #HappyPlaces❤️

I grew up in these woods. I don't have a lot of possessions and I don't need them. This land has always provided me with everything I've ever needed. I get to share the east coasts' biggest and most beautiful flat screen every day without ever having to pay a power bill! God bless us all.

Nice restaurant with a beautiful setting! We ate lunch which was quite good, especially the dark Porter beer. There is outoor seating and a nice walk to get a better view of the mountains. It's also a hotel if you would like to stay over. Will definitely visit again. Well worth a ride up the hill!

Six months after Hurricane Helene, Pisgah National Forest has major scars. Keep this in mind when hiking trails. Roads are washed out, and trees are across many trails. Research the area before you go. Be prepared for longer hikes. Even after all the destruction, the views are breathtaking. Will be back!
