A comparable experience to the Bridge to Nowhere, Pitt Street is overrated. Being near the heart of Mount "Plastic" and in view of Sullivan's Island, perhaps the snob appeal buoys what is quite literally a bridge to nowhere. While the comparable one near Rutledge and the King Street Extension is an actual bridge, a place to be alone and/or experience wide open spaces apart from the city while still close enough to the comforts of home, Pitt Street is like a platform or a stage, a place to be seen. Oh, there are stunning landscapes, to be sure, and compared to the other bridge to nowhere which offers no views of Charleston landmarks, this one offers several. The bridge itself has great out-rigged balconies where you can seem to float within the landscape, take pictures, fish and crab, or just watch people. However, Pitt Street is not easily a place to be alone or free yourself from the shopping mall of society. It struck me more like an aquarium in a way, a stroll through a social experience which happens to have a background of marsh and estuary landscapes. Add to this the relatively unwelcoming wealthy residential area adjacent, creating limited parking should you be able to find a spot, and you have what can seem like a plastic experience tailored for local residents, rather than an immersive escape separate from the social confines of the city. All that said, I do like Pitt Street and enjoy it on its own terms. Go with friends, family, or a date.
