You know what they say about real estate: location, location, location. The hotel is located right across the street from the Disneyland theme parks, so right away, that's pretty prime real estate! You could almost stop the review there. But...
It's really nice, honestly. The theming is a bit restrained compared to the amazing resorts down in Disney World (sorry...), but it's no less fun. It's a Little Mermaid theme, mostly, with a light nautical flair without too much frilliness. I think the kids will still get a kick out of a lot of it, though.
The rooms are nice, fairly spacious for a hotel, though not overly so. Room to run around slightly, but not much beyond that. It's more than adequate on space, though. The decor is again beach-sea-themed, with big posters of famous Walt classics. We had "Going to the Beach" in our suite. I think our friends had Goofy's "Learning to Swim." It was a nice touch to bring back the olden days.
I wasn't really thrilled with the color scheme and carpeting, though. The off-yellow had an aged unkempt feel, though I think they were trying to go for sandy? It might have been brighter a long time ago, but it just looked faded. The carpet was dark and nicely patterned, but it didn't have a lot of color going for it. Look for the "hidden Mickeys" though; that's always a thrill!
The pool was fine, pretty shallow for the most part, but ideal for families with smaller kids especially. The waterslide was really fun, but it's not too fast until right at the end. The kids couldn't get enough of it, though, so it's more than great for them. (As a rather large adult, I went down without issue, so weight limit didn't seem to be a problem either).
The restaurants inside the hotel were closed when we visited, so I can't really speak to the amenities too much. Firework observations were also closed, so not a whole lot going on activity-wise. There is a self-service sundries shop, though... novel concept, I guess... if you're very trusting!
I will say that the staff was really excellent. As always, they tend to be the shining stars of any Disney experience, and these cast members were no exception. I always forget to jot down names, but let me just call out the entire concierge and check-in/out staff specifically for their helpfulness, cheerfulness, and awesomeness.
Overall, it's a great place to stay that's walking distance from the parks and has enough other features to keep kids and parents alike occupied. Oh, and be sure to check out the lobby for whatever decorations are in season! We were greeted with a three-story tall Ursula around Halloween!
