Pizza Pi – St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands - Gastro Obscura

"One of the highest-rated, most beloved restaurants in the U.S. Virgin Islands has no official address and is best accessed by chartered boat, dinghy, or swimming. The floating pizzeria, called Pizza Pi, is the Caribbean’s only “food truck boat,” specially fitted with a commercial kitchen that cranks out New York–style pizzas. The restaurant takes orders by boat radio, phone, or email, but collecting your pie is a little harder, as the restaurant anchors in Christmas Cove, located off the east end of St. Thomas. Pizza Pi is the whimsical invention of Sasha Bouis, an MIT-educated mechanical engineer turned boat captain, and Tara Bouis, a teacher turned award-winning yacht chef. The American couple spent two years restoring an abandoned boat, adding a double-brick-lined pizza oven, hood ventilation, and solar panels. Throughout the day, boats pull up to the floating pizzeria, tie up, and enjoy the freshly made pizza passed from the kitchen window. The restaurant also offers delivery with their dinghy, which doubles as a small dining area when the occasional swimmer arrives. In 2018, Sasha and Tara sold their pizza boat to new owners Heather and Brian Samelson. Both visitors and locals say the pizza is still top-notch. Know Before You Go The boat is typically anchored in Christmas Cove off the east side of St. Thomas. It's open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you're looking for a boat tour that stops at Pizza Pi, check out the list on their website." - cecilyannwong

Google
Had an awesome time last week at Pizza Pi. This isn't just your average pizza - it was awesome!!! We didn't expect so many choices. Great pizza, yummy drinks, combined with a fun and unique experience = win/win. Highly recommend!

Google
Fun boat stop for pizza. Call ahead to order can be backed up. Great drinks. Cute Wisconsin theme

Google
Stopped here for lunch while out on a boat for the day. This was such a highlight. The pizza is delicious and so were the drinks. They make the dough and sauce every morning on the boat. Incredible! The floating tables were so fun! You do not want to miss this!!

Google
While on a charter trip we came across Pizza Pi at Christmas Cove. Wow! Who would have thought of making fresh pizzas on the water. So fresh the dough is made daily on the boat!! If you havent ran across this sweet little gem...it is a must do on your bucket list!! We had the Sunburnt Tourist and the Castaway. Both hot, flavorful, and delicious!! One of our friends had a stromboli. Im not a big fan of strombolis because I have always felt it was too much thick dough. I was able to try it and it was delicious. Not too much dough nor was it thick. It was perfect! So just remember if you are on a boat and in the area of Christmas Cove do not worry about packing your lunch. Google Pizza Pi, pull up their menu, and order your pizza. They can deliver it to your boat, pull your boat up to them, or enjoy your pizza/stromboli on their floats that are tied to the Pizza Pi boat. You will definitely not be disappointed!! Oh before I forget...they have non alcoholic beverages, a bar, and frozen drinks!! All to be enjoyed while swimming and basking in the cool clear waters and soaking of the sun rays while making memories.

Google
Such a unique and unforgettable experience! Enjoying delicious pizza in the middle of the water, surrounded by stunning islands and crystal clear views, was absolutely surreal. The pizza was tasty, the frozen drinks were refreshing, and the whole vibe was just perfect. 10/10 recommend adding this spot to your bucket list, it’s a must do!

Google
Excellent pizza, great margaritas! We snorkeled right up into our "booth" the minute they opened, and were greeted by friendly staff. They warned us right away they were working on a 20-pizza order and might have a bit of a wait. We waited an hour but it was worth it. They apparently have large excursion boats that pull up and order ~20 pizzas Monday, Wednesday, Friday morning and afternoon. That's worth consideration, but didn't ultimately seem to be a problem for us

Justin C.

Google
Pizza was WAY better than the Ritz-Carlton pizza!!! Amazing food and great service. The snorkeling right off the boat was incredible. We saw close to 100 turtles in the course of an hour or two.

Google
First time at Pizza PI. Pizza was great and we enjoyed it. No issues there. 2 lg. Pizzas and a small salad (approx $120) Just a little put off by them adding 20% gratuity automatically even though we were just picking up from the windows. Then I gave them cash to cover the cost +gratuity, then the girl asked if I wanted my change which was $7.xx. Geez!

Yelp
Update 05-01-2024 We managed to convince our sailing crew to spent the last night of our sail back in Christmas Cove, for the sole purpose of introducing them to Pizza Pi VI. Each boat ordered its on pizza, and we dinghied over to the back of the Pizza Pi boat to "carry out" the pizza. (They can also do deliveries). The pizzas weren't ready the first time we stopped by, so we went back about 15 minutes later. Everyone on both boats loved the pizza! And, Pizza Pi even helped us out with a roll of paper towels, which were sorely needed on our boat. Highly recommend Pizza Pi, it's a unique experience, fun, and very good pizza.

Yelp
I was amazed on how they can make a great pizza from a sail boat. The crust and flavor were on point! The pizza delivery guy was super nice and had plates ready for us. They had a place to eat in front of the sail boat on the floaties but it was too sunny and hot.

Yelp
What a fun and unique restaurant! We stopped here for lunch during our snorkeling tour around St. John. We swam over from our boat and hopped on their floating rafts to have lunch. Servers stayed on deck while they took our order and they used a fun boat hook set up to pass drinks and pizza down to the floating decks. Pizza was a little expensive but that's all relative on an island. We got a cheese and a buffalo soldier pizza. Very tasty pizza and even more impressive since it was made on a sailboat. They did have gluten free options available! A great part about this boat restaurant system, you can go snorkeling while you wait for your pizza! If you head toward shore from the boat, there is a lovely reef in about 5-10ft of water. Overall, a very fun lunch! Definitely keep an eye out for boat traffic as you swim to and from. Also, they only have large pizza boxes or paper plates for to go food so plan accordingly if you plan to try to swim it back to your boat like I did .

Yelp
An experience you'll always remember. We were able to go the Pizza Pi VI in Christmas Cove after a long day of snorkeling. The pizzas were excellent and our hungry crew gobbled them down within minutes! We also enjoyed a few cocktails - I highly recommend a Bushwacker to cool down! The service was fast and courteous... and fun! Be sure and check them out the next time you're in USVI!

Yelp
I am so glad I finally got to try this!! Our drinks were incredible, our pizza sticks were the perfect snack before a long boat day, and honestly, is there much cooler than a boat up pizza boat??? We had our captain text our order in before we arrived and it was hot and ready right when we pulled up. Definitely check this place out!
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
How could I forget this one?! Where else in the world can you get fresh, piping hot, delicious pizza, right in the middle of the ocean, lol... Our captain ordered ahead while we were busy swimming around and watching turtles. And by the time we got to their floating restaurant, our pizzas were ready. Our captain took the dinghy over, retrieved our pie... and it was so good! In that moment, out on the water, I felt like that was the best thing I'd ever eaten. It's an excellent experience. Not to be missed!

Yelp
Pizza Pi VI is a one of a kind floating Pizza Parlor on a Sailboat nestled in a protected bay, Christmas Cove, on Great Saint James Island, just east of St Thomas Island, accessible only by boat, in the US Virgin Islands. Pizza Pi serves up fresh large 16" NY style pizza pies while you snorkel with reef fish, turtles & the occasional dolphin. To order, 11am to 6pm daily, you can call Pizza Pi VI at 340-643-4674 or hit them up on channel 16 on your boat radio as you come into Christmas Cove. The Pork You Pizza came with sausage, ham, bacon, & mozzarella and was quite tasty. 8/10 The made-to-order pizza came with Pepperoni Mushroom, Bell Pepper pizza and was also quite tasty. 9/10 The Virgin Islands Summer Ale by St John's Brewers is a blonde ale with citrus zesty hops. 8/10 The beergarita came with a frozen margarita and an upside down Corona. It was super refreshing and potent. 9/10 In addition to 7 specialty pizza options, you can make made-to-order pizzas with a long list of toppings with meats including pepperoni, sausage, bacon, smoking rooster chicken, and smoking rooster ham. Other menu items include pizza sticks, Jalapeño poppers, chocolate bananas, Irie pops, ice cream cups, locally brewed beer, long island ice teas, beergarita pitchers, poptails, milagro shots, and fireball shots. If you do a shot with 4 friends, you can all take the shot at the same time on a one of a kind pizza slice shot ski! The owners of Pizza Pi found a G.L. Watson designed, 37 foot long aluminum motor sailboat that had been abandoned in Antigua for almost a decade. The yacht's interior had been devoured by termites, leaving a huge mess, but also a blank canvas. The owners spent two years building & restoring the interior of the sailboat. The sailboat has been completely transformed into a custom pizza kitchen where boaters can tie up, dinghy up, or even swim up to grab a pizza, some drinks or even some Pizza Pi VI branded swag. Pizza Pi splashed down into the waters of the Virgin Islands in November of 2014. There are many options for getting to Christmas Cove on Great Saint James Island. You can charter a boat for the day, half day, or join a scheduled snorkel, bar hop, or sunset cruise. Christmas Cove is a great place to snorkel & anchor for the night if you are doing a week long charter through the Virgin Islands, and for day charters, it's easy to pull up, grab your pizza, and head off to your next island stop. Pizza Pi VI has served thousands of pizzas to hungry boaters for over 6 years now. Pizza Pi VI is ranked among the top restaurants in the US Virgin Islands according to TripAdvisor. Pizza Pi should be a must visit on your next trip to the Caribbean! Pizza Pi VI loses 2 stars for the most expensive $33 pizzas I've ever had but gains a star for coolest pizza spot on a Sailboat and for fun pizza shot ski so it's a bit of a toss up. Our day at Pizza Pi VI was expensive but was really fun. Pizza Pi VI may be the only floating Pizza Parlor Sailboat but it is more than just a tourist stop and is some of the best but most expensive pizza in the Caribbean!

Yelp
It doesn't matter where you are, this pizza is incredible. Being on a boat in THAT water is a bonus! The Georgia Peacharia is one of the best pizzas I've ever had! I'd pay double what we paid for two pizzas!

Dave T.

Yelp
How can you not love pizza delivery on a boat? Super friendly people, best atmosphere, quiet neighborhood.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Best pizza in St Thomas? By far. Unfortunately there are no roads to Pizza Pi. Located in Christmas Cove, Pizza Pi is a floating restaurant. So start that boat up! They serve some excellent pizza. My favorite was the Bloomin Onion. We had 4 different pies, some Pepperoni Bites, a couple Chocolate Bananas for dessert (awesome), and Upp Island ice cream. What a feast! It's a beautiful location. You can even do some great snorkeling in the area. If your Charter Boat isn't stopping by, you're missing out.

Yelp
After a day of sailing (highly recommend sailing Asante!) we stopped in Christmas Cove for Pizza Pi- it was delicious! I lucked out and they still had gluten free pizza. We had the Georgia Peacharia, the Asian Chicken, and a plain Jane with pepperoni, mushrooms and sausage- everyone loved their choices.
google avatar

Talor G.

Yelp
How awesome is it to pull up to a pizza boat while enjoying a boat day around St. John!? Such delicious Pi's. The staff was super friendly when we pulled up. We called in our pizza and it was ready within 20 minutes so when we got there it was nice and hot! Nothing like a delicious pepperoni pizza after a day on the water!
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
Try the Asian Chicken pizza and the chocolate banana sticks. Yum!! Sad I can only get this from a boat. Thanks, #stormypirates for taking us out!
google avatar

Roberto Y.

Yelp
We rented a boat and finished our day at Pizza Pi. The fact that you can have fresh pizza on the middle of the ocean is just awesome. The pizzas are good. By the time we got there they had already run out of chicken and pork, which limited our options. We ordered a Cubano but instead of pork we had to settle for sausage. We could not try their pizzas with chicken either. We still have a good time eating pizza and having a couple of cold beers while enjoying of the ocean. Going to Pizza Pi is just a great experience. You can only get by boat. If you don't have a boat or cannot rent a boat there are tours to go to Pizza Pi from Red Hook. Go to Ocean Surfari (retail store across from Moes Supermarket), they offer the tour to Pizza Pi.

Nicolette T.

Yelp
Incredible place! Jackson was especially helpful and insightful regarding the menu, gave great service, & made the best drinks!

Yelp
Moored in Christmas Cove in St Thomas about 4 boats from us is the Pizza Pi boat. Ordered the margarita pizza with jalapeño poppers and their VI gin with pink basil infused cocktail served by the pitcher. Everything was delicious! Highly recommended for anyone one a boat or passing through. Oh, we used our eco-friendly @surfsidesips glass straws! Pizza Pi Vi is the boat off the distance with the yellow flag.

Shannon B.

Yelp
This was great! Pizza was fresh, hot and delish. What else could be better after a day of sailing and sniveling than pizza. Great options, but would love a few more veggie topping options. Otherwise was yummy.
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
Great pizza and a really cool concept. The restaurant is only accessible by boat and conveniently located by a few snorkeling spots. Definitely worth a stop if you plan on doing a chartered tour in the area. We got the carbonara pizza and mushroom "sticks", which were more like mini calzones stuffed with cheese and mushrooms. Both were delicious, but the mushroom sticks were especially good.
google avatar

Kate E.

Yelp
Such a great idea and spot! We called in an order at 1 on a busy day and it was at our boat by 2:15. Pizza was delicious and crispy regardless of the heat! Can HIGHLY recommend the Fresh Margarita Pizza and Kickin Chickin!

Yelp
My wife and I were visiting from Florida when we heard from locals about a must-visit pizza spot on the island. Well, sort of on the island- it's actually in Christmas Cove, a very quick boat ride from St John's and St Thomas. We decided to visit for dinner after doing an all day boat tour around the island. First of all, the experience can't be beat. As we were approaching on our boat, we were greeted by two super nice employees that took our orders. They were masked up, and made sure we were as well. They take COVID protocol very seriously. It felt very safe, and the boat looked super clean. We ordered three different pi's - the Mad Mushroom, Pork You and a plain cheese. We also got the Jalapeño Poppers (you've never had anything like these.. they had bacon in them.. SUPER good!) and chocolate banana sticks (definitely get these!). To top it off, the whole party I was with ordered the shot of the week, which we all took on the slice-ski, a must-do and picture worthy experience. Note: the swag you can buy on this boat is great quality. I got a t shirt and my wife got a tank top that she loves. We both got hats, and pizza-pi branded buffs that we've been rocking ever since. If you're visiting the island, you haven't truly visited until you make a stop at Pizza Pi.

Yelp
So much fun pulling into Christmas Cove and ordering pizza. The service is terrific and the pizza is delicious. Highly recommend

Cara B.

Yelp
Amazing pizza(and we are from NYC). Great service, fun drinks!! Christmas shot ski a bonus while out in this beautiful waters

Yelp
So headed out today to sail from Water Island with a crew of friends and family to Pizza Pi. When the craving strikes, ya gotta make it happen. We ordered Pork U, Peaches, and a mushroom pie . Three delicious pizzas!!!!! So worth the commute. Got there early for lunch and then spent a few hours swimming, and watching the continuous stream of boats passing by. You must find a way to get here... quality ingredients=delicious pizza , and very friendly service ! Cheers!
google avatar

Yelp
Best pizza in the water About $30 a large pizza with lots of toppings and such. Def hit the spot. The girls working were super nice. They let me pet the dog. Look for the blue boat with the banner that says pizza.
google avatar

Hayley N.

Yelp
A little slow the day we went, but there was a concert going on that day for a charity event. Most of us were buzzed enough so waiting a while just made the pizza taste that much better. I'd go back.
google avatar

Nicole J.

Yelp
Really cool experience. I assumed the pizza would just be "ok" given it's a floating pizza boat. I was wrong! The pizza was amazing, we tried the Bloomin Onion, plain, a jalepeno popper roll, and the Gin punch. It was all so good. Plus you can't beat the view!
google avatar

Costa A.

Yelp
Very surprised! A boat in a cove making great pizza. We were sailing and moored in Christmas Cove and saw a yellow banner and decided to order a couple pies (~30.00 each). They delivered it right to our boat is dinghy. Good eats and would recommend it to others.

Courtney R.

Yelp
This was a must stop for us while on a boat trip and it did not disappoint! Would totally go here again. We had a large group and the pizza was amazing! The Cuban was the best! They even had a dice ski for the group to take shots off of!
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Quite possibly, the best scenery you can have for pizza outside of Italy. Quality is off the charts, as was the service. Great beer choices.
google avatar

Isaiah E.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best pizza I have ever had. The people are really nice and help you get docked up. The pizza is incredible and made from their own fresh ingredients and even serve drinks if you want some. Great place if you want quality pizza.

Ann T.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza we have ever had served off of a boat in Christmas Cove! A surprise does await when you get to the Pizza Pi boat - you will not be disappointed! Thank you to the crew of Pizza Pi, and thank you to Ryan and Stephanie, crew of the beautiful boat Pisces (Seas the Day Charters), for getting us there and making this a truly fun and memorable day. It's only been a little over a week and we miss you already!

Bob L.

Yelp
Went there for pizza at 5:15, was told that due to a recent accident (boater hit due to no lights on dinghy) they couldn't serve us even though their stated hours are until 6:00. We understood and wished the best of luck to whomever was injured. Ordered 4 pizzas for pickup the next day at 12:00. We got there to pick up our pizza and the dude from the night before (who was obviously high) didn't even recognize us and asked for our order. We said we had ordered the night before, from him, and the pizzas were to be ready. He apologized and said they weren't made. We then reordered and had to wait an hour for them to finish. Pizza was good, but service as mentioned above was very sketchy. Pizza is overpriced, but they have a captive audience. $30.00 for pizza. Also, don't try for an 11:00 pickup as they apparently make a bunch of pizzas for someone in Cruz Bay and won't make other pizzas. Great idea, bad pricing and bad execution. Whomever owns this place might want to consider being present to get the "ship righted".

Michael G.

Yelp
Worse pizza Ive ever tasted. Probably as its made on a boat. Was soggy and flavorless. (They should rename it the "Soggy Pizza!" Like the famous Soggy Dollar !) And the staff was rude. I guess as its a monopoly. I wont be recommending this to any of my charter guests.
