Philly’s Absolute Best Pizza

"Dan Gutter, a.k.a. Pizza Gutt, gained a loyal following on Instagram before opening Circles + Squares in Kensington and then Pizza Plus South in South Philly; now you can find his pan pizza and hand-tossed pies at this West Philly location too. A handful of signature options include one with Buffalo chicken and ranch as well as a pesto pie, and you can get them in snack boxes that come with smash burgers and chicken tenders or a vegan seitan cheesesteak. Call or order online for takeout and delivery." - Ernest Owens, Eater Staff

Pizza Plus Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Pizza Plus has the same crispy Detroit-style pies as their sister restaurant , now you just don’t have to venture past North Broad to get them. Here, the deep dish pizzas are round and they load doughy and spongy slices with buffalo chicken, homemade pesto, or plenty of melty cheese for $25 and under. It’s a great spot to call for takeout and get your order in under 20 minutes, whether you’re grabbing some chicken parm with tangy tomato sauce or a meatball sub. " - Candis R. McLean

Google
Came in for a slice and was pleasantly surprised. Crust has a desirable crunch and the cheese pulls well with pretty good flavor. This small hole in the wall is 10x better than the other pizza spot up the block. Will return to try the other fare. Update: Got the cheese steak on the "Wednesday steak special". Cheesteak was solid , good amount of filling and not too much ketchup/mayo. The seeded roll was quality too !

Google
New, Simple, unassuming find on the Spruce strip... wasn't crazy about the other options so I say why not? Walked in and was definitely surprised about the options, I was gonna get a slice but I decided to go left field and get a Single Patty with Fries. Very excited about the Cooper Sharp, iykyk 🙏🏾 Such a great choice my BF came in after eating my semi warm fries (ate most and left in bag 1/2 hr)...👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽will be back and I might try everything on the menu at some point

Google
Walked in for pickup to discover there had been an issue that prevented it from going through. Even though it was after close, the folks here turned right around and made one of the best pizzas I've ever had while being personable, friendly, and all-around great people. This place is an awesome addition to the neighborhood and where I'll be stopping by to get my slices from now on!

Google
Tried and shared their two different pizza box offers. They regular was the better of the two, but they did make some decent wings and chicken cheese steak. Would recommend of any of the college area pizzas a few blocks down.

Google
Went in this past Saturday after church. Placed a seafood order at the place next door for some mussels, and while waiting, decided maybe a slice would be good too. Went in and saw the wings on the menu and instantly decided I'd try those as well.......waited at the counter for 3 minutes, making eye contact with the register worker a few times and said hello. He continues to ignore me so I left. Horrible experience and it felt racially motivated the way he was obviously trying to ignore me. Fine I will spend my money at businesses that want it.

Google
Best pizza in west philly. 16 inch traditional and the detroit round are both excellent. Best detroit style i have found in the city. Chicken strips are also amazing. Dont sleep on this place

Google
I personally like their pizza - they are one of two pizza places on the block, and if I just want pizza, I'll go there. They don't have a lot of seating, but the free NBA Jam Arcade is nice. That being stated, I think that the other place (Accu) is better for sandwiches, even if it costs a little more. Sometimes, I'll go to Accu for sandwiches and P+ for pizza if I want both...

Google
Best pizza I’ve had in a long time honestly. A lot of pizza places use cheap sauce and cheap cheese but I honestly feel like they use high-quality ingredients. I picked up a order from here doing Grubhub and the smell alone got me. I had to try it the only bad thing I can say is that the wings were just a little too salty for me but other than that from the ranch to the all white pizza even including the wings everything was just delicious

Yelp
Seitan wings delicious. I ate them on the walk home. Just give me free sauces pls. I'm paying $302 for the meat alternatives Their deep dish/Detroit style is not good. I got the chicken parm and added ricotta. Too much sauce not enough anything else? Will only be seeing me for those wings. #everydoghasitsday

Yelp
I loved this place! On the corner of 47th and Spruce sits a very unassuming pizza storefront. There are two tables inside but it's mostly a takeout area. I've spoken to one of the people at the front counter a couple times and he's super helpful. He always tells me about the specials when I'm ordering and he's definitely save me some dough--because of that, I've gone back again and again. What I love the most is that there are lots of vegan options. Almost every item that you can get there's a Vegan version as well.

Yelp
I had some pizza from this restaurant and I thought it was really good. It was hot and tasty. I would get pizza from this restaurant again.

Yelp
Only reviewing the slice of pepperoni i bought. Had to wait a good 20 minutes for a new pie to be baked, but no biggie. The slice cost around $3.50 and had a solid good taste, but was way smaller than I expected. The price point for a slice isn't bad, and strangely its getting harder and harder to find places that serve slices as some spots aren't serving them anymore. I would go back and try a full pizza, but I'll pass on the slices.

Yelp
Some of my favorite pizza in Philly! I've had slices and whole pies and they're consistently so good. I literally find myself dreaming of this pizza weeks after eating it. The employees are also amazing and so personable. And just general great vibes at the West Philly location. Highly recommend checking out Pizza Plus!

Yelp
My go to neighborhood pizza spot! Cannot go wrong here. Every single person I've interacted with from here have been so nice and the pizza, chicken tenders, and salads are phenomenal. Don't hesitate to add this place to your regular routine.

Yelp
First time ordered and won't be our last! everything we ordered was 10/10. The pizza was perfect very thin and done so nicely, the buff boneless wings were to die for & the smash burger! can't wait to order again especially for football Sundays! Thank you!

Yelp
Ordered on Uber Eats and it was good. The Chicken Pesto Longroll was pretty good. The Chicken Parm Pan Pizza was decent. I had some the next morning and it was tasty

Dan B.

Yelp
Phenomenal little pizza shop! Crisp crust and flavorful pizza. Plus the staff is amazing! Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food was just NOT good at all! Period! I came to Pizza Plus because it had good reviews on yelp plus they offered an array of vegan options. I thought I was in for a treat however... It was gross and a waste of money! I almost wanted to cry!! I ordered vegan wings, fries and a fish sandwich. Firstly the presentation was horrible. The fries literally came in a brown bag with no paper tray, container.. nothing...just fries dropped in a bag! Then the fish sandwich... I took one bite and shook my head. I was scared to finish it!. It looked like two soggy fish sticks with pickles on a seeded bun! Like WTF! Let's not talk about the vegan wings. I took one bite and almost gagged. It was chewy and flavorless. I wouldn't even feed that to my dog! I'm grateful I didn't get sick from that food! Overall they had some nerve to sell that to a paying customer. The cook can't cook!! I paid 30.00 for something I ended up throwing down the trash chute!!! I would've showed pics but didn't want that trauma on my Yelp page!

Yelp
I couldn't wait to write this review because, are you kidding me? This is now a place I can order from regularly (they are just a few blocks away) and get this delicious chewy, perfectly thin, but not so thin, hand tossed crust with the most delicious cheese, sauce, pepperoni and black olives pizza? (Don't skip the option of garlic. So good!) This was good but not just it's-ok-for-Philly-good. In my humble opinion this pizza would be a stand out in New York, Chicago, St.Louis (I love St. Louis style pizza) ANYWHERE... but guess what??? It's right here in west Philly! Ok Pizza Plus. I'm now a new loyal customer. It's going to be sad to say goodbye to my standard place only because I ordered from them for over twenty years. But sometimes you gotta move on, ya know?

Yelp
Half cheese Half sausage. Looks better than it tastes and not worth the price. Kind of bland

Yelp
tl;dr personal, Detroit style pies -- quite possibly, the best in Philly -- highlight the casual American menu at this hole-in-the-wall pizza joint Sister restaurant to locally acclaimed Circles + Squares, Pizza Plus delivers a menu of all-American fare including Detroit and NY style 'zzas, burgers, and sandos. The most recent outpost off 48th and Spruce definitely ups the pizza game in West Philly. The small, walk-in room is unadorned, apart from a psychedelic, pizza-themed mural on the sidewall. Order ahead of time, then check in with the staff when you arrive. Two friends and I opted to split 3 pan pies (2 classic Cheese, 1 Cheeseburger pie) and an order of Pizza Curly Fries. We ordered online, then took our meal to a nearby park. At just 9" diameter, the "Personal Pan" pies may initially seem unassuming -- but the thick and heavy crust characteristic of Detroit 'zza is plenty to fill all but the emptiest of stomachs. The chewy crust with cheese dripping off the side reminded me more of garlic bread than traditional pizza crust. The red sauce was pleasantly tangy and multi-dimensional. The Cheeseburger pie, highlighted by ground beef, Cooper sharp, and chopped pickles, was a surprise hit. Of note, this option does not particularly taste like pizza -- if you're really in the mood for traditional 'zza, then forgo (or opt to share) the Cheeseburger pie. The fries were stellar right out of the box, but progressively descended into a sloppy mess by the end of the meal -- if you order them, be sure to finish them while they are still crisp. The price clocked in at $60 total (after tax/tip) but felt like a steal for 'zza this good. Our group agreed that Pizza Plus clocks in among the best pies in Philly. Beyond that, ordering and pickup here felt substantially easier than some of Philly's trendier pizzerias. I can't wait to go back and sample more of the delicious menu.

Yelp
I really love shiitake mushroom pizza. I used to order the Holy Shiitake pie from Mellow Mushroom before I moved to Philly and saw that the new Pizza Plus in University City has shiitake- as well as vegan pies! So I ordered a white pie with shiitake and omg. The garlic and Gran Moravia. Warning: strong garlic alert. I'm a fan of garlic so I was happy about this but I thought I'd add this in case you aren't! Anyway the thin crust is pretty solid but the toppings are what really brought it home. I only wish there were more mushrooms on it. They ran out of pesto so I'll have to try that next time. So glad to have another great pizza spot in WP. Kinda glad that not everyone knows about it yet, it's nice when your pizza is ready in less than 30 minutes on a Saturday night... PS: Does anyone else think of Pizza Planet when you see their logo?

Yelp
This place is great. The pizza is outstanding, especially the Detroit-style. The prices are fair for the quality and the range of the menu is great. The pick of the options on offer is the chicken pesto hoagie which is superb.

Yelp
Howdy My Fellow West Willians Guess What, Guess What, Guess What???? Lengthy Read..... Tonight I decided to get Pizza because Max L-w was offering to pick up pizza for people from a place in New Jersey. So I decided to give PIZZA PLUS a try. A friend of mine who looked a bit disheveled went in with me and asked for change for a $20 bill. The window staff offensively looked him up and down and told him she didn't have change. He did not hear her response the first time and so she repeated it. After that she continued to say this at least (2-3 more times) as if she thought he couldn't understand English or something. I ended up having to say to her that it was not necessary for her to keep saying that as he understood. She then told him to go somewhere else and buy something so he could get change. Now I found this offensive because they had sodas that he could have purchased. However, she clearly didn't want him to buy anything. She wanted him to go elsewhere. He eventually left the store. Thereafter, I asked what the prices were for the various pizza's as there was nothing to reference for pricing and she said I needed to go to the website. She made no attempt to offer pricing for any of the items on the board. So I asked, what do you do in the case of a customer who does not have a phone. She then says that anyone who can't afford a phone obviously cannot afford a $14 pizza. The cost of my pizza was $14. I told her she was incorrect as some people have free phones and whether or not they have one is not an indication of whether or not they can purchase a $14 pizza. I then asked about the difference between a vegan vs regular pizza. Her eyes rolled all around her head and she gave that look as if to suggest I had asked a "dumb" question. I thought about these exchanges and got angry while waiting for it to get done. Now I normally keep thoughts about racial issues to myself. However, I'm noticing more and more in this gentrified neighborhood, I am treated as if "I" don't belong here even though I have been for over 50 years. I'm feeling like some of the establishments owned and operated by whites take for granted that their businesses will survive no matter how they treat people of color because the masses of white folk business will be enough. Well sadly that may very well be true. However, they will not get wealth from me as I commit to never spending another penny in Pizza Plus because of this. For my people of color, I hope you have a better experience than I did. For all others, do better. And the pizza wasn't even good...

Yelp
Not bad but doesn't totally live up to the graphic design on their website. The thin crust is just alright while a pepperoni pan pizza goes past "decadent" into "is this raising my risk of heart attack?" territory without being worth it. If I wanted pizza I'd go here but wouldn't go out of my way. Pizza in West Philly is nothing to write home about and sadly Pizza Plus doesn't change that.

Yelp
Probably one of the better slices in Philly, but no Pizzeria Badia in Fishtown.. appearance of both locations doesn't look like much but both offer quality (non) "hand tossed". The Manager is a little flakey, don't expect a call back, seems unorganized.

Yelp
Very nice staff service was slow but well worth the wait. Beef pepperoni Pizza and wings was delicious. Nice coupon deals.

Yelp
i really like their food but man, i wish they could just have their hours posted across apps and websites with some consistency. one app says they're closed, one is accepting orders. website and google says open (hours updated 2 weeks ago), but the phone is off the hook. pretty disappointing. i could have ordered a sandwich for lunch online and shown up to an empty restaurant!

RaSean B.

Yelp
I love their Detroit style pizza and their sides are bomb too. The chicken cheesesteak I wish could be chopped up more but other than that, PERFECTION
google avatar

Yelp
Get this pizza now. No one else compares. Everything is made in house. The hand tossed and pan pies are just as good. Don't sleep on the smoked chicken wings.

Sean M.

Yelp
Very, very good food, especially the pizza. My only complaint is that often they do not have slices readily available. I have gone in between 11:30 and

Yelp
Ordered the snack box after getting home from a long day of travel. It was excellent and would order again!

Yelp
I found Pizza Plus through Philly Eater 2021 for essential places for pizza. Thought I'd give it a try and ordered their plain 9" pizza, wings, and a caesar salad. Great cheesy crust on the pizza and really good seasoning on the wings that also had a lot of meat on them. The only complaint I have is the Caesar salad. It was literally just chopped lettuce with barely even a handful of croutons. Very disappointed I had to pay almost 10$ for that.
