As a health-conscious, or waistline-conscious foodie (quite the oxymoron I know), I've tried to stay away from doughy indulgence, for instance - pizza. But once in a while I do crave a bit of Sicilian indulge that bring back the fond memories of my month in Italy.
A friend of mine decided to fix Pizza Barberella for my blind date. The rationale was that if the date sucked, at least the food rocked. Makes sense.
We started with the generous plate of antipasto - an assortment of cheese, cured meat, olives, pickled jalapeño peppers and fresh-baked bread with a side bowl of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. What a great way to wake up all the taste buds and warm up our conversation.
Our pizza choices were:
1) Margherita - tomato, fior di latte, aged mozzarella, basil, parmigiano reggiano and extra virgin olive oil.
2) Funghi - besciamella, fontina, oven roasted cremini mushrooms, parmigiano reggiano and white truffle
3) Amatriciana - tomato, fior di latte, aged mozzarella, house cured and smoked pancetta, red onions, fresh garlic, chili flakes, parmigiano reggiano and extra virgin olive oil
4) Diavola - tomato, fior di latte, aged mozzarella, spicy salami, nicoise olives and extra virgin olive oil
Every bite into the cheesy, flavorful thin crusted pizza is like re-living the moment in Napoli. Every mouthful is a beautiful balance of toppings, sauces, and thin-crust.
My favourite ones are the Margherita and the Funghi pizza as they taste as close as the ones I had in Italy. To summarize the highlights: Toppings are fresh, portions are generous, and the service is warm and welcoming.
I guess I've found the cure to my pizza craving.
