7 Former Gas Stations That Are Now Restaurants Worth Visiting - AFAR

"Transformed from an abandoned gas station into a fish market in 1995 and later expanded into a full-service casual seafood restaurant, this all-wood interior spot receives fresh daily deliveries from Long Island Sound fishermen. Locals flock here for large lobsters, snow crab legs, and other freshly sourced seafood dishes, reflecting the owner's long personal history with the market and its evolution into a restaurant." - Adrienne Jordan

What an incredible lunch at the PJ Lobster House today! After driving from Northeastern Pennsylvania to Bridgeport, parking, and taking the roundtrip ferry to Port Jefferson for the day, my decision on where to enjoy lunch was part of the experience. I'm so glad I chose here. The place was spotlessly clean, the decor was truly upscale but fun, and the server (Mackrnzie) was prompt, personable, and helpful in suggesting what to have for lunch. The lobster bisque was tasty, and choc full of Lobster. The coconut shrimp entree was enormous (9 huge shrimp), and I chose sweet potato fries and cold slaw as my sides. The dipping sauces for both the shrimp and fries were perfect. All in all a solid 5 of 5. In fact, the only thing that was mildly off-putting was the loud country music playing overhead... country just didn't seem to match the upscale nautical vibe, but that's just my opinion. I would go back in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

Absolutely scrumptious. The trout sandwich was piping hot and flavorful. Mom had the Fishermans platter which offered a great variety. Wonderful location right on mainstreet. Parking is tricky but the food is worth it

We had the sandwich and soup combos and selected the bisque soup with crab cakes and lobster roll. Also ordered the bucket of clams with white wine garlic sauce. Reeeeallly good flavors from all dishes. Our waitress was excellent, attentive, and friendly. Atmosphere is comfy and clean. The tables that are elevated also offer a great view of the place. Highly recommended for lobster and seafood.

The service was excellent. Within a minute of sitting down, warm bread and butter was brought as well as being asked for a drink order. I ordered a 2 lb lobster, which was perfectly done. The steamed potatoes and corn on the cob was great. My wife ordered fillet mignon medium rare, also perfectly done. The entire experience was a treat.

Our appetizers were baked clams and oysters Rockefeller. They both had to be the worst I have ever had. The baked clams were like paste and I’m not sure if there were any clams in them. I didn’t see any or chew any. And you better like a lot of garlic because that’s what you taste. The oysters Rockefeller was a lump of spinach on a small oyster with bread crumbs and I believe bacon bits. No sauce of any kind. So basically it was a mouthful of spinach. The service was great and it is a very nice atmosphere and I almost forgot my entree. Seafood Paella. I took 4 bites and no more. Tasted like they dumped a salt shaker into this dish. Watch what you order. Maybe I should have kept with lobsters

Tonight my fiance, toddler and I went out for dinner and our waitress was outstanding. I wish I had gotten her name on the way out but she had brown hair, mentioned she was a mom herself, young and very pretty. Not only was her service amazing but she was great with our 2.5 year old daughter. She truly went out of her way to not only be our server but engaged with my daughter which made her very excited and even gave my fiance and I a moment to swallow our food. She will be the reason we drive 40 minutes to come back here. Going to dinner with toddlers can be rough and she made it an enjoyable experience. Thank you!

I came here last year with my family for my birthday dinner and had an amazing experience—especially thanks to a kind Latin waiter who accommodated are request to have our lobster fried instead of steamed although fried lobster was not a menu option. We waited a whole year to come back for that same dish. This time, the waiter was gone, and the staff refused to fry the lobster. When I asked for a manager, a rude, petite, bald man proudly claiming to be the owner told me I was mistaken and it never happened. I know exactly where I was. I know exactly where we were seated, and the same bathroom location. On top of that, $114 for just two skinny king crab legs with not one side of salad with it. Close to $50 for some fried slimy sea scallops with a side of sweet potato wedges that were nice and crispy on the outside and raw in the inside. Never again.

Yelp
We've been here about three times. And each time the food was awesome. The sushi is fresh. The seafood is cook very well. Hubby loves the lobster rolls, the hot one. The waitresses are very nice and accommodating. service was good. And the ambiance, Good. We love the outdoor seating. Go check it out. I recommend them. and after, you could go and walk around in the town and go get you some dessert from the ice cream parlor.

Yelp
Service: Nice. The wait staff was nice! It was a Friday afternoon for lunch and there weren't too many people in the restaurant, so we got all the attention that we needed. I do have to say there was a mistake when the server brought food to our table that we didnt order. Food: Clam Strips - Well seasoned. There was plenty of this to share between two people! It was light and crispy! Fish & Chips - Good Portion. I liked that you were able to choose the portion size of the fish. I thought it was odd that that it was served with waffle fries instead of a traditional fry. Bay Scallops in Scampi - Buttery. The small bay scallops were nice and buttery. On to my next adventure....

Yelp
We got the combo sandwich and soup with lobster roll crabcakes and bisque soup. Also had clams with white garlic sauce. Love the bread that they served with our meal and our waitress was amazing. The atmosphere is cozy and upbeat, our booth was elevated and roomy. Definitely recommend. Gastro Maestro approved!!

Yelp
I came here for the sushi, which was good with generous portions. The sushi chef, Kenny, is a nice guy and works fast. If you remember Benten in Mt Sinai you will recognize some of the roll creations on the menu. I see some room for improvement for the servers though. They were very friendly, but my party, as well as another couple sitting at the sushi bar, had to walk over to the end of the sushi bar to grab chopsticks, soy sauce, napkins etc. ourselves because the server only took drink orders, brought them, and then wasn't seen again until I was trying to get the check, which also took quite a while for a place that's not packed. The hot sake I ordered came in a chilled jar, so only the first sip was (luke) warm and the rest was cold. I'd come back for the sushi.

Yelp
Food was ok. More mass produced type of feeling. Pasta was a bit over cooked - linguine and clam and linguine with shrimp and scallops. The scallops were bay size so small. A little odd in the cheese sauce. The mussels in wine and garlic really was bland. Could have used some parsley and maybe some shallots. Oddly, the sauce was very sweet. The shrimp cocktail was - shrimp was a little overcooked. Snow crab appetizer was good. Was expecting it to be salty but it was tasty. The butter sauce on all of them was just clarified butter. Could have used some lemon but you could do yourself. Service was efficient.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch here! Had a cup of the lobster bisque to start and it had decent sized pieces of lobster in it, and very flavorful! Ordered the cold lobster roll which came with fries and slaw as well. It was stuffed with so much lobster salad, and the bread was toasted yet so soft... it was extremely enjoyable, so much so that I cannot stop thinking about it! The fries and slaw were good too. It was a lot of food and we left stuffed. Service was great too. We came on a Friday around 1:30 and it was quiet, so everything came out really quick.

Yelp
Always love eating at the Lobster House in Port Jefferson, NY (Long Island); especially when I'm enjoying lunch with my mom and granny. Pretty much everything on the menu is a home run. Todays menu choice include: - Shrimp & Clam Scampi - Lobster Bisque - Seafood Sampler Platter The staff seemed nice (but could be hit or miss on occasion) and the interior is dimly lit but cozy. Check them out. Yum!

Yelp
This relatively new restaurant is a great spot for happy hour and dinner. The decor is contemporary and very inviting. The artist responsible, for the mural did an outstanding job. All of the staff is friendly and professional. It is actually three great businesses in one location. The restaurant offers, fresh lobster, daily specials, and there is also a complete sushi counter. The fish market has a phenomenal display of fresh seafood merchandised in a fun, spectacular way. We look forward to returning to Port Jefferson soon to try out their lunch menu.

Yelp
Had the best lobster roll I've ever had, including multiple I've had in New England. Lots of lobster and it was delicious. Also had fried oysters as I hadn't seen those on a menu in years. They were also good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, great food, nice outdoor seating. They seated us for lunch right away!

Yelp
I went with my friend and she ordered 2 lobster tails and I ordered a cold lobster roll- it was delicious. The service was great! I'll definitely be back :)
google avatar

Yelp
Ambiance was great, food quality and portions were excellent. Staff is very friendly and attentive. One of the best lobster rolls I've found on Long Island thus far. There are daily specials and a great selection of menu and drink items. Highly recommend the lobster bisque or New England clam chowder as an appetizer.

Yelp
As we are from the West Coast and don't have much access to fresh seafood we were looking for some place that did ans PJ'S fit that need. I had the all you can eat crab on Tuesday and left so full!! My husband had the lobster fragoli and couldn't see the pasta at the bottom because it was filled with seafood. Our boys had things off the kids menu which was a hearty portion. We left with full bellies for sure!

Yelp
We've been coming here forever. With the new location (a few years now) it's our go to because it's the same parking lot as rocketship park. My kids are growing to behave better in a restaurant, but consistently at least once a month for the past 2 years we've been going here. The food is always outstanding. But that's not what makes people come back, especially when they have little monsters. Gabby was our waitress tonight. She's been our waitress probably 10 times before. She anticipates what we need, she gets when we get to the end of the meal "kids gotta goooo" time. She's fantastic. My husband even asked her to sing happy birthday to me (Sorry again!) the girl hosting and bartending, I wish I knew her name, she's been there forever. She's the best! I can't recommend this place enough!

Michele C.

Yelp
I had the best Birthday Lobster dinner! From my 2 lb lobster to the raspberry chocolate bomb- OUTSTANDING! Bella was an awesome server- polite, accurate, knowledgeable, didn't rush us and was a pleasure!

Yelp
Delicious lobster roll on a beautiful summers eve. We got the combo share for 2 that included 2 sides, 2 entrees, 1app and 1 dessert. The choc chip cookie on cast iron w ice cream, caramel drizzle w whip cream and choc fudge was the bomb! Lobster roll was delish but the side of veggies were a bit mushy. The chix francese was overcooked and noodles needed to be more aldente. Service was good tho. Got drinks at the bar.I'd come back for the extensive menu.

Yelp
Went for a late lunch to celebrate my Aunt's 91st birthday. Mojito cocktail was too limey and had only one small piece of mint. There's no lunch menu but you can get soup and sandwich if you want something light. Portions are large for all of their dishes. The spicy calamari appetizer was much better if you used the cream sauce. Other than that everyone was pleased with their food. Waitress was attentive. Definitely will go back again. If you use a GPS and are on Main St you will need to walk through a storefront with several shops inside. It works out better if you park in the lot behind all the buildings but the GPS won't send you there.

Yelp
This place is nice inside. Lots of seafood choices on the menu. I had the crab cake sandwich. The crab cake entry was at market price, but not the sandwich ($24). Please don't order this. The patties looked like they were taken out of the freezer and heated up on the griddle. They tasted pretty bad, as well. My wife liked her seafood sandwich. Clams casino were good. Thinking the crab cake sandwich was not at market price (high priced as it was, anyway), because it was a basic patty from the freezer, not fresh. The place was crowded, so maybe I was dealt a bad hand. Oh well. See for yourself below. Service was good.
google avatar

Charissa D.

Yelp
A laid back but tidy atmosphere. A fully loaded menu with lots of delicious fresh seafood. Everything was perfectly prepared at reasonable pricing for the amount of food served. Service was speedy and super kind. I really can't wait to make the drive again to try more menu items! PLUS the perfectly clean seafood market in the back! I've never seen a place so immaculately clean! Bravo!

Yelp
I'm 46 years old and I enjoy dining so I've been to many different restaurants. This was easily one of the worst meals I've ever had. The martini was disgusting, the dining experience feels like an express checkout lane, the flounder tasted foul and the soup was disgusting. Nothing about this place is worth one star. Avoid!!!

e g.

Yelp
We were a party of four, the food was very disappointing. Two of us ordered lobster. Both of ours were over cooked and tough. Another person ordered lobster tails, this person actually got real butter. The fourth person ordered fish and chips, said that was good. We ordered sushi as an appetizer it was ok we also ordered calamari. Some of the pieces were really good, other pieces were rubbery. The waitress wasn't good at all. She looked like she didn't want to be the. The man that seated us was really nice. The place itself was decorated really nice. However the four of us agreed that we would never go back there. It's a shame because their old location was small and the food was always good. I do t know what happened to it.
google avatar

Adel H.

Yelp
Excellent service and food was fantastic! We ordered the rockafella oysters and clams as apps. I had the lobster bisque and Caesar salad. Definitely will go back.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant especially if you love seafood. Very close to the ferry and great for walking around the port Jefferson village. Only downsides are the place can be noisy (do not come for an intimate dinner on a summer weekend) and the parking) as the place is packed which is a good thing. I personally love the salmon but have never had a bad meal.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Great for dine in and take out, too. I have been to this restaurant a number of times. The new dining room is nice and eating in their new deck is a fun experience in the summer. The salmon pinwheels and stuffed flounder are delicious. Their sushi is pretty good too. The fish is always fresh since they are connected to the fish market. I have used their catering menu for the past few years on Christmas Eve as well. Their shrimp cocktail and octopus salad was a hit. My family loved the baked clams and calamari. If you're in the mood for fish, you really can't go wrong!

Yelp
Came here for a birthday dinner with my family. They moved to a new location, this time being in the center of Port Jeff Village. I don't remember the old menu, but It feels that the menu has new things on there. Here's what we ordered this night: - fried calamari: deep fried calamari served with cocktail sauce and lemons - salmon pinwheel: salmon fillet wrapped around homemade seafood stuffing consisting of shrimp, lump crabmeat, scallops, mozzarella cheese, peppers, onions and breadcrumbs - seafood paella: shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, and sausage atop a bed of seasoned rice - penne a la vodka: penne pasta tossed in a tomato cream sauce with shallots and bacon - seafood supreme: shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams sautéed in a garlic, cream, and cheese sauce - surf & turf: 1 1/4 pound steamed lobster and a grilled 8oz steak, served with a house garden salad 2 side dishes - sides: creamed spinach, steamed fresh mixed veggies, sweet potato fries Drink orders: - 2 sangrias - Guinness Beer - Mango margarita - Amaretto Sour All of us really enjoyed our dinner. The location is great as well. We all ordered something different this time around and we. Were delighted.

Yelp
It's been a while since we've gone to Port Jefferson, and it's nice to see the new places that have opened and how things are getting back to some kind of normal. This place is in a new location and I actually like it better than the last one. The restaurant is beautiful inside, and the food is awesome. The fish is so fresh and delicious and the drinks are awesome. We went during lunch during the week so the place wasn't that crowded, but you can see that they get very busy on the weekends. They have lot's of room and nice big tables to fit big parties. The service is also excellent. If you are in Port Jeff, definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Went for all u can eat crab legs . The place is nice and clean service was awesome. 75 dollars for the crab legs they were over cooked and soggy . They were mis colored and when you cracked them open you can tell they were not fresh . My group was very disappointed. Won't go back and don't recommend it at all .

Yelp
Bon G and I went to PJ's on Thursday circa 4:30 to take advantage of their Lobster Special Dinner with another couple. After a bad experience at another venue for their Lobster Dinner we were skeptical, but this outing was terrific! Our dinners were outstanding! Bon and I upgraded our dinner to 2 lb lobsters and the other couple had the 1 1/4 's. We started with Lobster Bisque for an appy and it arrived piping hot with nubbins of lobster and potato...was delish! First we got a very fresh salad with a loaf of fresh hot bread...very good. Then the main event, the beautiful denizens of the deep arrived...piping hot steamed lobsters. They were well prepared and large! The plate was large and contained a mass of mussels in white sauce, corn and a potato. We dug in and left nothing but a pile of orange shell!! The food and service was exemplary and we really had a good time ...we will certainly return for another bout of us vs. Lobster! (we will win!)
google avatar

Cecilia S.

Yelp
If I could have given 0 stars I would. I almost wanted to speak to the chef myself to give him/ her a piece of my mind. I had the stuffed flounder it was so dry and the stuffing was dry and tasteless. My broccoli and potatoes had no seasoning or butter.... Nothing! Everyone at the table had issues with their food. I was so disappointed and it's not cheap very expensive. We will never go back

Cristine F.

Yelp
In from out of town & staying at Danfords. We did not realize that it was more of a "diner" rather than a higher end restaurant like its surrounding competitors. No dress code but wait staff was extremely attentive and polite. Food was disappointing

Ines P.

Yelp
We had dinner around 7:30 pm on Thursday night, three of us. It was quite loud. The waitress' disappointment because we didn't order alcohol was almost palpable. My husband was very happy with his chicken parmesan, even if it consisted of strips of chicken, which is unheard of. Our guest winced when she tasted her shrimp scampi dish. It was the same face I made when I tasted my scallops which were rubbery on the inside and not cheap. We waited a long time for our food. They must have been defrosting the seafood. It was a special occasion, so I was polite, as was our guest. Her deceased husband made "excellent" shrimp scampi for years, the real thing! I asked the waitress when we were paying the bill whether the scallops had been frozen. She denied it. I explained that the centers of the scallops were rubbery. She did not appear to be interested, not even remotely. Could it be that one gets different treatment if one doesn't order alcohol?
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Really good food and portion sizes. Swordfish tacos never disappoint. Ask for Tori, she's so nice!
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
So this my second time and I can't say this is the best place for seafood even though the fish in the market looks amazing. 1-lobster tails and shrimp were dry 2-sirloin was gray 3-creamed spinach tasted canned 4-paella had little flavor 5-mahi mahi was the best entree 6-soups were the best overall 7-mashed potatoes were gummy 8-clams casino, fried clams, and steamers were all solid The portions were a good size especially for the money and our server Tori was terrific. Opt for the berry pie instead of the apple crumb or skip both and get the cookie skillet.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Great. Love the new location. Seafood dishes great and friendly staff. Also worth mentioning, the cole slow is excellent!

Sue T.

Yelp
Lobster done to perfection. Service was very pleasant. It's a very typical seaside fish house. This is the third year we have celebrated our birthdays with the Lobster House and once again we were very pleased
google avatar

Lyse G.

Yelp
I took my daughter here once a week all summer long! I LOVE the allagash ale on tap and all of the great seafood offerings. Wish they had whole fried clams! But they do have legitimate STEAMERS on the menu and those are fresh tasting and tender, with proper dipping sauces! Take me right back to my coastal Massachusetts days. We enjoyed every piece of fish and app we've tried here. Fries sometimes could be a little crispier. Salads are fine, there's a seafood salad app that is fresh and tender! I must try the all-you-can-eat crab leg night! Excellent cocktails on the menu! Ambiance is relaxed and sports bar like with some outdoor seating at the rear of chandler square. It's a tad on the noisy side, which I don't mind, but if you want a romantic evening... this is more family-oriented vibe. Service is friendly and attentive but never pushy.
google avatar

Alicia C.

Yelp
For my drinkers who want a refreshing and delicious cocktail, I have 2 words for you, Coconut Mojito. You're welcome.

Rachel C.

Yelp
My fiance and i went here for all you can eat crab legs. They upped the price but sadly serve you frozen crab legs. Not sure why you would up the price for frozen seafood. Waitress was very nice and was always by our table. We will never go back for the frozen seafood. Very sad since we come here every year and never had this problem.
google avatar

Demishia O.

Yelp
We were seated immediately. Food came out promptly. Waitress was efficient. Nice ambiance it was quiet but they played music. Good restaurant to go get seafood. They have a market right next to it. Food was good. Price was about $85 for both meals.

Maryann R.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and ambiance. Everytime I come back to NY Pjs Lobster house is on the list of things to do. Especially Thurdays lobster specials. I always get my 3lb lobster. Delish everytime
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
Food was great, they were out of bread when we went, overall pretty great option in port Jefferson. Service was also pretty good but at the end of the night it was slowing down. The inside of the restaurant was very nicely designed and the seating was comfortable.
google avatar

Lance T.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the name. This is one of those places you go to if you want a good meal. They never let my family down. Also just because if the name, who would think that they make a great chicken francaise? It's great! Whether fish, French onion soup, boneless wings or anything else; it's going to be great. I've been dining with them since they were on the corner, uptown near Mather Hospital, but the newer location is a lot better. It's right by rocket ship park with easy access and parking back there. A little more of an upscale feel from the previous location but the value is still fantastic. Definitely one of the hidden gems on Long Island. Most people have heard the name, but you're crazy if you're not a patron. See you again in a few weeks.

Beebe J.

Yelp
Food was awesome and the service was on point I recommend the crab cakes and scallops

Sandy W.

Yelp
I had never been to PJs. To start off with (I was there with my 80-year-old mother and 82-year-old father) we were unceremoniously seated in a booth and I asked to move because the AC vent was right above my mother's head. The manager, I think his name was Jace, seemed annoyed, but moved us to the back and slapped down the menus and left. We ordered the mozzarella triangles and edamame for appetizers and both my parents got the new England clam chowder. My parents raved about the New England clam chowder, and the mozzarella triangles were fresh, crispy, and hot. But unfortunately, that is where the good food ended. In the past, when I have gotten edamame it has always been piping hot, fresh, and sprinkled with flaky sea salt. The edamame that I got was lukewarm, grainy, with no salt to be found. I apologetically asked our server to take it away, apologizing because I never do this. She replied., "I don't care, I didn't cook it" Then, our entrées arrived. I had ordered the crabcakes. Now I don't know about you, but whenever I get crab cakes they are usually hot, with lumps of crab llightly fried or sautéed. I got two hockey pucks. I really wish I had taken a picture. They seem to have been previously frozen and microwaved, with no Crab taste at all! And so again, I apologetically asked the server to take them away as there was no way I was paying market price for crabcakes that didn't even taste like crabcakes. My parents had ordered the hot lobster roll. right away my mom complained that the lobster meat was very tough. and hard to chew also saying that there was hardly any flavor, but they both ate it, saying they would make do. When our server presented our check, my mom asked to speak to the manager, assuring the server it would not affect her tip. Our server seemed annoyed. Why didn't you say something? she asked. I could've brought you something that you would like. I really didn't love the way she was talking to my parents, but she said she would get the manager. When she walked in the back, I heard her yell, "Jace!". But when she returned to take the money, Jace was nowhere to be found, so we just left. All in all, very disappointed, and we won't be back

Ray S.

Yelp
1st time server great, 2nd time server was horrible!!.. between the two visits these are some to the dishes we tried ... spinach dip terrible, mussels delicous....fried flounder sandwich good, scallops ok, king crab legs small portion and OVERPRICED, shrimp scampi good . Lots of other restaurants with much better food...will not return

Yelp
Delicious seafood. Love to sit out on the patio on nice summer days. The service was good too

Yelp
Service was fantastic: 5/5 Pretty scenery for dates: 3.5/5 Price: $$$ See pictures for description and scoring for foods.
