Place des Terreaux

This is one of the starting points for those who want to explore the city of Lyon. Although it is not as well known as the nearby VIP square (I am referring, of course, to Place Bellecour), this one is far more beautiful, especially for lovers of Baroque architecture. Many tourist attractions are located directly on the square (l'Hôtel de Ville, Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the Bartholdi Fountain) or in the immediate vicinity: the beautiful Place de la Comédie, the imposing Palais de la Bourse, several historic stairways (notably the Escalier Mermet and the Escalier de la rue Pouteau), the Saint-Bernard Cathedral, the odd building known as the Traboule et Cour des Voraces, and the famous Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls (although you can skip this one, as there is really nothing to see).

Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s most vibrant and historically rich squares, nestled between the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts. The place des Terreaux with the majestic city hall of Lyon is a great photo subject. And it is just nice to sit at the fountain in front of it and to see people walking by. The square with its view onto the city hall is one of the most well-known landmarks of Lyon.

The architecture of the buildings is truly worth seeing. The entire square is surrounded by very old and elaborately decorated buildings. On the square are cafes and restaurants, ideal for taking in the whole artwork.

Worth to visit by sightseeing, only 10 minutes and you can go to the museum. Beware your pocket as well.

Nice architecture surrounding the square. The highlight is the Fountain depicting Amphitrite, Greek Goddess of the sea. It is an impressive sculpture.

Tourist trap! You'll be spending 20EUR on 4 sodas or 10EUR for an ice cream. There are better places to go with less trash blowing in the wind like tumbleweeds.
