I'm an American Living in Paris and This Is My No. 1 Travel Tip for Anyone Visiting

"I rented a tiny studio apartment just off Place Masséna, Nice’s central square, for the first half of my decade living in France; the seaside town was easy to navigate on foot or by bike, and I even once made the 20-minute ride home." - Lane Nieset Lane Nieset Lane Nieset is a travel writer from Miami who has lived in France for the past decade. Place Masséna is an iconic square in Nice that is located near shops and restaurants on one side and the entrance to the old town that is steps away from the seaside on another. The black and white tiles complement the brightly painted buildings on either side. What,’s more, the famous Catalan artist Jaume Plensa has a remarkable installation there in the square - just be sure to look up. There are several cafes here on the square / plaza itself. It’s a must when in Nice!

You can’t go to Nice and not visit the Place Massena! Located in the city centre and very easy to find! It’s located next to lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Old town and the promenade anglais super close too! It’s a very pleasant square and I really like the colours. Looks even beautiful at nighttime with the lights!

I wandered through Place Masséna and loved its vibrant yet calm vibe. The checkerboard paving and lush palm trees make for a bright, welcoming space. Despite being a major crossroads, the square feels surprisingly open—with plenty of benches to sit and soak in the atmosphere. In the evening, the illuminated fountains and soft lighting create a peaceful, magical moment to pause amid the city’s rhythm.

Accidentally ended up while looking for restaurants for dinner. There are 6 Buddha located on top of pillar, each lighted with different color. Surrounded by red buildings and fountain with Apollo statue, this place is a must see during day and night

Really nice area to walk around with a great selection of shops, restaurants and bars. Another classic setting to watch the world go by...

Really good and entertaining place to sit and have a cold draft beer while the wife is shopping. Never boring with all the many different people passing by. Several places to sit in the shade.

“Place Masséna is the vibrant heart of Nice. Surrounded by red façades, elegant arcades, and fountains, it’s perfect for walking, relaxing, or enjoying events. Both day and night, the square glows with energy and charm.”

Open area — great atmosphere. Sometimes overcrowded. Near the sea and has some restaurants around

Yelp
Awesome place (pun intended). Spent a lot of time here when I was in Nice. It separates Avenue Jean Médecin and Vieux-Nice, plus it offers the Fountain du Soleil and Arc de 115.5 Degrés. I recommend going at least twice: once early morning, and once early evening. I came at 7am on a weekday and it was a ghost town. I was able to really take in the aesthetic the square had to offer (and take some tripod selfies without anyone else in the picture!). Later, I came back around 9pm--it was a total shitshow (in the best way possible). The liveliness of Vieux-Nice poured onto Place Masséna with people all over the square eating, drinking, and taking in the street performers. I feel going at both times of the day really gives you an appreciation for everything the square has to offer. Check it out! Excitedly, Clayton Cohn

Yelp
Beautiful square in the middle of Nice. Nice architecture surrounds the square and tons of really nice art and sculptures dot the square. There are lovely gardens on both sides of this square with fountains and mists and it's really refreshing on a hot day. I love this part of Nice and a must visit if you happen to be in town.

Yelp
This plaza was very close to our hotel, it happens to be one of the main plazas in Nice. The train passes right through it, there are water fountains, statues, and poles with lighted figurines on top. It is full of people and very busy even at night!

Yelp
This is a beautiful area, central to the trams and smaller streets with restaurants, holiday decorations, #ILoveNice sign and water display, and plenty more. Over the course of our 9 days here, we had to pass by and use the tram to get our destination for the day and once we return, find a place to grab dinner. Very central location, lots of people, security, just a great place to stroll and take in the sights!!

Yelp
Cute open area between the heart of Nice and the beaches of Nice!! There's a really fun area for, mostly kids, to cool off. They have water spraying out of the ground in this, what's almost like an outdoor water park. The kids loved it! Not that I have any, but they all seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

Yelp
A beautiful square in the middle of Nice. A fun place to stroll around day or night. Despite the heavy tourist crowds in August it stilled managed to take center stage and let you forget the throngs of tourists around you. Beautiful buildings, statues and even some modern glowing art installations at night.
