High praise for the men and women’s clothing buyer and designer. So much elegant yet practical clothing. Jackie was most helpful in finding pants that fit my body type, so I walked out with two pairs of pants,, one matching jacket, and a timeless cardigan sweater that ties charmingly at the neck.

Beautiful store with high quality goods. Bought beautiful pajamas that I’m sure I’ll have forever. Employee that helped us was so nice. We’ll be back! ❤️

What an amazing store. It is so beautifully curated to the point I could spend hours looking at all of the merchandise and there are surprises around every corner. I have bought most of my closet staples at Plain Goods - all timeless and so well made. And last but certainly not least the staff is amazing - always pulling new items that they know I will love, such a personalized experience. I highly recommend spending some time here when you are in the area.

Aside from the beautiful store design, clothing, home accessories & decor, the staff at Plain Goods are by far one of the kindest people I have met at a store. I was a little nervous bringing my 5 year old inside because they have beautiful things that I didn’t want him to break. The owner, Michael and his beautiful mother, were so sweet and kind to my son, engaging him in conversation and when my son asked us to buy a beautiful hand made blue fan for him, the owner gifted it to him. On top of that, my husband’s knee was injured and they cleared a chair for him to sit while I shopped. I wish I could give this store a million star rating. I loved this store the first time I visited and I love it even more now. Thank you for your kindness and for making my son feel so special!!

Very overpriced goods and store is hard to maneuver in. Pompous employees who made us feel like we were intruding. My friend bought a very small box of chocolates for $30 anyway. I personally would not give them my business after that treatment.

What a gorgeous shop - Plain Goods is a true destination! I gladly take that 75 minute drive for a feast of the senses. My purchases are items that I will cherish - a beautiful scarf, a colorful barrette, or a vintage tablecloth. The staff is gracious and very attentive, and I enjoy seeing the welcoming owners - I look forward to my next visit!

I never write reviews but I really like this shop. Treat yourself to a visit to Plain Goods! Honestly, don't drive through New Preston without going in. Or, drive a few miles out of your way for the fun of it. At minimum it will be a feast for your eyes! Immediately beyond that, it's a treasure trove of beautiful clothes and objects...gifts for oneself or others! All this, and really kind and helpful people in the store. A place with commerce is personal. Rare and delightful. Enjoy

My book club was in town having our monthly meeting and we explored the lovely town of New Preston. All was well until we toured this store. Shop was cute but staff was unfriendly, did not even greet us or assist with anything. Not a great impression! Don't think we'll be back. Glad to take our business to any of the other lovely shops in around town that have excellent customer service.

Beautifully renovated store with interesting eclectic wares. But be careful buying "vintage " pieces from website . I have had problems with their peculiar sizing of men's clothes (that don't actually conform to US equivalents ) and more recently with the quality of an item I purchased which , while listed as vintage with imperfections, was actually quite soiled and not well represented on website . Not very satisfactory response from store when I raised this issue . They seemed to think the dirty condition somehow enhanced the item. Caveat emptor !

Looking at the reviews, I am not the only person with a bad experience with this store, in particular the store owner, Andrew. Very bad customer service! Received a $200 gift for my newborn baby in the wrong size which I sent back in the mail (at my cost) and received a gift card with a 1 year expiration in fine print. I realized less than 1 month after the card expired that it had expired and apologetically and nicely asked for an extension on the gift card, explaining the situation. After a few terse emails in response, I called the store and the owner Andrew told me the card had been spent because they had sent the original purchaser a reminder of the card expiration date (rather than me), giving the gift card information to the original purchaser. No apology for sending the reminder to the wrong person, just an explanation that "that's how our system works" and no attempt to rectify the situation. I was excited to come to the store and shop using my card, and I certainly won't be shopping there anymore after the rudeness and dismissiveness of the owner. Avoid this business!

Best store in the region, hands down! There are literally zero duds in this beautiful, well edited collection of objects and clothing! Friendly knowledgeable staff, low pressure vibe. This is a MUST when in Litchfield County! We are so happy to have Plain Goods open again!

This is a condemnation of Plain Goods in New Preston CT. after a very unpleasant encounter with one of its owners and an equally unpleasant experience attempting to make a return. I bought an expensive dress on Plain Goods' website, relying on their size description which was UK12 (US 8) and dress description which was "loose fit". There was no sizing guide. There was no image of the dress on a person, but I found one on the internet. I am usually a UK 14 (or US 10) but the mention of a loose fit and the dress style (no waist) made me decide to order the UK 12. At the time other, smaller sizes were available. The dress is much too big - everywhere, which was strange, as I was worried it might be too small. Puzzled, I looked at the designer's website, which has a size guide specifically for this dress (see below). Plain Goods did not put this size guide on their website. It shows the bust of this dress, for example, in the UK 12 (US 8) size as 45 inches! I had looked up UK 12 on the internet before buying; the standard bust size for that is 36-37 inches. Plain Goods accepts returns but no refunds - only a credit note. So I looked on their website for an exchange or other dress to buy, but there was next to no inventory in medium size dresses, or any smaller sizes of the dress I had bought. In view of the size misdescription - given it would have been so easy for them to show this dress's specific size guide, and a fair warning needed when a dress departs so radically from the normal and expected size measurements - I wrote asking for a return. I recognized their store policy of exchanges or credit notes (only good for one year), but asked for a refund as an exception to this policy, in view of the misdescription of the sizing. This is when the trouble began.  An owner of the store called me.  He said I should have called the store before ordering online to check the exact measurements of the dress!  Implying it was stupid of me to rely on their website description - UK 12 with a loose fit - he berated me for not knowing this designer's proclivity for loose styles, suggested I should have it altered and that that would be easy (no, actually, not with the presence of side seam pockets and with shoulder adjustments needed).  He suggested I didn't like the way it looked because I was short (he asked my height - 5'4") although I stated I liked the length; intimated I should have known it looks better and different on "girls" when I said I had looked at an image of the dress on a person on the designer's website.   After a stream of saying anything he could think of to dismiss my point of view and gaslighting me in ways that actually were quite laughable - in fact very funny - he made ridiculous points whose only purpose could be to make the listener feel like a rude outsider  - "our customers are nice, they are happy, we try to create a calm and lovely environment"... So.. I cannot believe this person is in a customer-facing industry.  I'm not inclined to return the dress - I would rather give it to charity than deal with this store, Plain Goods.  This owner is a mean spirited, insulting person who went out of his way to call me to try to make me feel stupid and wrong.  Given I'd said I understood the return policy but was politely asking for an exception to it, I can only assume, since he'd made up his mind not to grant one, that he wanted to put me in my place for being so stupid as to trust his own store's description of the size of the dress.  See below the designer's description -- which I would have seen if I had bought it on another website.

What a beautiful store - this is a true destination! The owners always greet me warmly, and their staff are very attentive and gracious. If I am looking for something special - I gladly take that drive to New Preston.

One of my most favorite shops. Michael and Andrew the owners, pay great attention to the details and quality of their well edited and uniquely sourced selections of leather goods, men & woman's clothing from Italy , Japan, Great Britain, France and the U.S. They always have wonderful vintage pieces, in addition to beautiful home goods, fabrics and rugs. It's always a treat to be in Plain Goods.

I've had several dealings with this store, all of which have ended on an unpleasant note. Their inventory is lovely. Their approach to customer service is anything but. If you go here expect rigid policies and condescension. Best to avoid.

What an amazing store with exceptional merchandise. I didn't have a lot of time to browse so I only tried on a few things. I know when I can't get something out of my mind it means that I should have bought it so when I returned home I went online and ordered these beautiful shoes that I know I will love for a really long time. Where I wanted to spend more time was looking at their textiles, books, food items and home goods. The owners have such an eye for detail and beauty. Can't wait to go back. I usually don't post reviews but it's been a while since I visited (pre-pandemic) and I wanted people to know that their online business is still up and running. Enjoy!

Plain Goods is elegant, thoughtful, and celebrates impeccable craftsmanship and moreover, the staff is warm and knowledgable, and want you to feel good in the clothes you buy or be in love with the home goods you live amid. You can tell the owners make considered choices in both their buying and their employees. I also love the timelessness of their private label designs; they are exquisite! We are so lucky to have a store like this in our midst in Litchfield County where I live, whether for beautiful Italian shirting or antique textiles or furniture, it's a constant feast of beauty.

I've been in a few times. Merchandise is fine -- even quite nice -- but the vibe is definitely snobby. I am a fortunate person of privilege, but I don't dress or carry myself that way. They've always treated me like I can't afford anything in the shop (which, you know, appearances can deceive). Glad they've fixed up the old building though.

A word of warning for the young: this place is unbelievably snobby and rude to people who look like they're not going to spend more than $400 in their store. I came here for the Miguel Flores book signing, and once I got my book signed and paid for, the cashier didn't wrap my book like he did for the countless other older patrons before me. My friend pointed it out that they didn't do this for me, (they literally just stuck the $50 book in a bag and handed it to me). I thought that maybe it was an oversight and to give them the benefit of the doubt, so I waited patiently for the couple in front of me to finish checking out, when the other cashier walked up to me and snapped "what's the problem?" I told him that he forgot to wrap my book like the other patrons, and he didn't even apologize! He wrapped it up silently and then handed it to me without another word. They literally just wanted to rush us out of that store, and trust me, I will not spend another dime there again.

I discovered this shop online through my usual blog and news reading. I was intrigued, so I investigated and immediately fell in love with their beautifully curated merchandise. The womenswear is consistently clean, simple, elegant and contemporarily classic. I have now ordered numerous times, and despite some sizing issues, I have never been disappointed. To the contrary, I keep coming back for more! The quality and design elements are impeccable (especially the Japanese lines). The personal service when I've needed it is always warm, welcoming and incredibly helpful, so necessary for an online shop. One small constructive criticism: I do wish they offered photos of actual models wearing the clothing. I have learned how to size myself according to this approach, and it has proven invaluable. I am sincerely thrilled to have found this sartorial resource!

i would like to preface my review by stating i never write negative reviews, but because my experience at Plain Goods was so extraordinary I feel compelled to share. Recently I had the pleasure of visiting New Preston for a girls weekend. Once we spotted Plain Goods, we were excited to pop in for some Christmas shopping. As soon as we entered, two of my friends were immediately asked to leave to finish their coffee outdoors. They didn't argue and obliged even though it was 30 degrees out there. I was taken aback by the policy, also with how quickly the clerk pounced upon entry. Coffee crisis addressed, I started to peruse the showroom. I immediately noticed an antique yellow ware bowl. I have several at home and am always interested in adding to my collection, that said this particular bowl was a standard, run of the mill style, so I wasn't really interested but I took a look at the price tag and was FLOORED. The bowls are worth around $35, more if they are large or have a unique pattern. Plain Goods was charging $395.00. Strike 2. First my almost 40 year old friends can't be trusted to hold a lidded coffee cup, and now I see that their prices are grotesque and frankly, insulting. Turned off, but still curious I continued towards the rear of the store. The clerk hovered closely behind one of my friends. Another girlfriend had her cellphone out to do something (answer a text? I'm not sure exactly) and with the same timing and intensity as the coffee incident 3 minutes ago, the clerk struck again like an snake from a bush. "No cell phones in the store." Strike 3. The gluttonous mark-ups, audacious rules, and failures of basic customer service sent me out the door. I sat on the bench on the front porch to wait patiently for my friends. While I rocked in the cold, my nose caught the undeniable smell of feces coming from the porch. How apropos this was to the Plain Goods experience. A beautiful little town, charming building, and nice products, suffocated by the underlying stench of entitlement and affectations of privilege. I can't remember the last time I was so turned off by a shopping experience.

In addition to the amazing detail with regard to the selection of brands they carry in the store, the atmosphere makes you want to stay all day. It's a complete lifestyle experience from clothing to furniture and kitchen goods. It was the best part of my Sunday, I recommend that anyone headed out to the Litchfield area stop by and ask for Michael.

There is nothing like this shop. It is absolutely gorgeous. The clothes are chic and timeless... I have purchased several beautiful, classic dresses that I wear day in and day out, and that I have never found elsewhere. The owners are knowledgeable about fashion and exceptionally talented at picking out what looks good on me. A priceless service!

I'm so glad that I strolled over to Plain Goods the other day. It seems to be a complimentary addition to the other wonderful shops nearby. Gorgeous textiles and knits, classic coats, crisp shirts, sensible accessories and.... honey. Yes, honey. There is something so personal about what they have chosen to fill the space with. I walked out empty-handed (this time) but surprisingly inspired by the simplicity of it all.
