What do you do with an almost 2 year old when Grandma and Grandpa need to keep him entertained for the entire day?
Well, rather that sit him in front of the boob tube, one thing you can do is take him to the nearby international airport and let the incoming planes nearly land on his head. That will most likely get you points big time. I suppose that if security had seen us pulled over in the NO PARKING ZONE, we might have had to call his mom to pick him up while we were led away in handcuffs. We got lucky.
Then, you take him over to the plane museum so he can get even closer, but with less risk.
Then, you watch him point and babble and go "ruuuum ruuuum" (his rendition of an airplane flying) for the next hour, take plenty of pictures, and text them to his mom to make her feel guilty. It was an easy day for us and quite cheap.
The Planes of Fame Air Museum is a well known, but small, museum occupying one of the hangars are dedicated to restoring mostly WWII aircraft and later. There is a modest entrance fee for big people. We did not pay it simply because we had already worn him down with earlier activities, were very much aware that, as gifted as his mother says he is, he still had a 2 year old's attention span. And we knew he could be just as easily entertained in the gift shop and peeking through the glass doors into the hangar. Besides, there was a huge airplane outside in front of the museum that had already taken his breath away and launched his imagination. We can always come back again when he is a bit older.
The gift shop was great...kites, model airplanes, tanks, clothing (like jackets, jump suits, shirts), plenty of kids toys, pictures, videos, and books. Once he discovered some soft stuffed airplanes appropriate for his age group, he began "ruuuum ruuuuming" again.
Keep an eye on their calendar on their website. There is an Air Show scheduled for early May.
And just so you know, he also had a great face-to-face encounter afterwards with a couple of young cows that still reside in the diminishing dairy lands surrounding the airport, and pulverized a fist full of sweet strawberries from one of the roadside stands nearby. What a cool day!
